Forget Xbox 360 RROD: Here is Sony PS3 YLOD

Everyone knows about the Xbox 360 RROD (red ring of death) thanks to some 33% of games consoles getting this problem, now we have proof of the Sony PS3 death with a so called YLOD.

The video below shows a Playstation 3 with yellow lights, it sounds like a hard drive gone bad to me from the clicking noise as that's what I have had with many PC hard drives.

Every product gets faults, but it's just what percentage of that product that counts. We have heard around 1% of PS3's have problems and why shouldn't they, but this is nothing compared to the well known and joked about world-wide RROD.

In the case of the gamer that made this video below, his console has already been taken away by Sony.

If you say PS3 has a 1% failure rate still right now then the xbox 360 has a 70% failure rate because everyone knows that the 33% is a lie from Microsoft. Why would they reveal the real failure rate to everyone? Most who had a faulty 360 have had it fail more than once. Those replacements tend to fail faster than new 360s.

This retard in the video probably dropped the PS3 or hit the PS3 in someway to cause the HDD malfunction.

This is one PS3 that is broken, but it isn't the only PS3 that has broken. The Playstation forums have plenty of evidence of that. But there still aren't as many broken PS3's as there are broken 360's out there.

It is good to be able to see one of the indications of a PS3 failure. This is the first video I've seen.

And 33% isn't a made up number, around about a third of the people I know with a 360 have had either the HD-DVD add on, hard drive, or the whole console break on them. Let's just face that the 360 has crappy hardware (the first step on the road to happiness is acceptance, you know), but if you like the 360 that much, that shouldn't stop you from enjoying your purchase, just get it repaired. Problem solved.

If hardware reliability matters to you that much, then get a PS3.

the 33% failure rate was not manufactured by a single gamespot...it was cross referenced from several retailers, which were all reporting the media an extremely high amount of returns being attempted (in which they would tell customers they needed to take it up with MS)...

when it really started to get out of hand, MS's PR campaign was still saying "we have a normal electronic failure rate of ~3%, which is within the market norm"...

then it errupted...what is foolish is that you think 33% is a made up figure...the number is easily 30%...almost every single person that is into gaming knows at least one person that has had a failed 360...I know 3 people that own one personally, and each of them have replaced theirs at least once...you constantly hear podcasts and web vids where a gaming site has an office 360 fail...and it is still happening...what you are misunderstanding is that the 30% is referring to the shortened life expectancy of the 360 (this is the number that analysts also tacted onto the 360, and MS has yet to deny that number since extending the warranty)...30% will have a much shorter life span than what is deemed acceptable by the industry, hence the extended warranty to take care of that if and when it happens...

this RRoD issue turned into one of the biggest and most expenisve product replacement programs in the electronic industry's history...

Here's my experience. I have had both the 360 and the PS3 since their respective launches. I have had issues with both, but I've had to replace my 360 due to the RRoD. My PS3 was having issues reading the information on the hard drive, but after a quick call to customer support (btw, it was quick, not like the M$ c.s.), I was able to restore the default settings and everything was fine.
Now as for the 360, I have 3 brothers-in-law, and each of them has had to get a replacement, one of them had to get 2. My father-in-law also had to replace his, as did his neighbor, and one of my wife's co-workers had to replace 3. About 50% of the people on my friends list have also had to replace theirs. That's pretty much everyone I know personally with a 360, and half of the people I know just online. I'd say that's an issue.
My PS3 buddies (admittedly fewer) have never complained about any issues. Even online I haven't found anyone with the same issues I've had, I've found other issues, but they all seem quite random in comparison, and most of those people have had an easy fix, like a hard restart or restoring the default settings.
Now I'm not a fanboy, in fact, I play my 360 more than my PS3 (more games=more play), but I have to say that as far as they both go as a reliable product, the PS3 is far ahead of the 360, and with the exclusives coming, I'm glad I have my PS3.

Not to be the rain on your "facts only" rant, but this link was posted up summer of last year and even if the number posted isn't exactly 33%, the article stating that ALL 360's had some sort of issue is kind of disconcerting if you ask me.

If YOUR 3% rate would be reality then the Microsoft manager would have put enough money into the pool to cover for a shipping amount of 108 MILLION xbox360s. I don't think you would expect MS to have sold 108million 360s already, or do you?

So either the ~30% RROD rate is spot on, OR the Microsoft financial managers are all incompetent retards who can't handle cash. No one sets aside that amount of money without a good reason.

I don't know I seem to forget all about the RROD, because I'm being drowned in all these games and console sales that continue to dominate the PS3. When I get this huge pile of games off me maybe I could remember the RROD. Untill then the only thing I can remember for some reason are the December NPD numbers.

Question, why does the RROD console continue to outsell the PS3 both in games and in units, by a "HUGE" margin? I just can seem to figure that one out, LOL I mean here is the RROD console that sells games buy the millions and here is the PS3 that can barley pass 100k. It's like bizzaro world huh?

go bad over time. They all start to go bad after 3 years, the life span depends on how lucky you are. Certainly if you leave the PS3 on 24/7, it will shorten the life span as well. This might be one of the first HDD that goes bad in a PS3 since launch. We will see more of it as the time comes.

But regardless, this is more of a compliment than an insult to the PS3. Because one of the coolest feature of the PS3 is you can replace the HDD easily. HDD are disposables, not meant to last forever.

I've had both my 360 and Ps3 crap out on me.My 360 lasted a year and 7 months before it got RROD...Ps3 crapped out on me 27 days after I bought it :( The HDMI port burnt itself and there is no way I would ever play using a composite cable so I took it back and got a new one :)

Yeah that sounds like a hard drive. I've had enough of them fail on my computers to know that sound. It could be something else though. I say back up your HDD every once in a while. That way if it's out of warranty and it fails you can just replace it yourself then restore it and not send it back to Sony. I don't consider this a manufacturing error like the 360 though. It's just what HDD's do sometimes, they fail.

If you want to talk faulty hardware I would say look at PS2. Those dam things and their faulty laser unit were a complete nightmare. Trouble with it was the PS2 would read some discs not others and if you turned it upside down it sometimes work again.
So in other words it wasnt like the 360s RROD, where the console doesnt work whatsoever. You would end up thinking its a dodgy game disc.
Cant remember Sony replacing all them consoles.
Please no come backs, I have huge experience of the dam thing, I have a few video DVD stores in the UK.

Had my Ps2 from day one but nothing wrong with it...it still works. But the Ps1 on the other hand had some laser issues. But that's nothing near the RROD and the fact that the 360 crushes the discs when the laser is reading it.

I went through 5 PS2 systems, No lie. but I smoked around it constantly. I don't smoke around my ps3 at all now and I have never had a problem with it. I owned a 360 and never got the RROD but the dvd drive screwed up in it in the first month. Take care of your systems and they will last a long time.

I know what you mean, EasilyTheBest. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a PS2 at launch and it got the DRE problem 4 months in. At that time the PS2 had a 90 day warranty and Sony didn't cover the problem. They wanted $150 to repair it with no warranty on the repair. So, to protect my game library, I bought a brand new one.

I think that a lot of the gamers on this and many other sites are too young to remember the problems that Sony had with their PlayStation and PS2 lasers. Personally, I'm glad that Sony did it right with the PS3 as far as the hardware goes. So far mine's running like a champ.

Now if you mean to say that the HDD provided by your "friend" has Linux installed and within Linux there are emulators accompanied by ROMs (which are most likely illegal in this case) then that is completely different.

I doubt ps3 failure rate is as high as 1% after one year of use. Sony is a veteran in the consumer electronics market, where the failure rate is much lower than that.

Yes, Microsoft's 1-3% failures goal was already enormous for a product such as the Xbox. The real failure rate was nothing but a disrespect for their customers.

I know six or seven friends who have had their PS3 Blu Ray drive fail. It would no longer read disks for them. They had to bring them back to the shop and get a new one under warranty. This is in Europe so some of them were 60gb versions that failed and when they brought them back to the store they were given a 40gb + €100 to make up for the difference. That or you would have to wait for Sony to fix it. I know if my 60gb version fails I'll be sending it to Sony because I want to keep the BC for some PS2 games I purchased.

And also i prefer a 360 but i must say that ALL 360 manufactured in its first year are broken. Its just a matter of time. SOmebody play only 3 times a week.. another plays 5 hours every day! The clicking starts before he even hits the power switch on the back. And even then it should be in standby mode. So the HD should not be clicking already. Also you can't say that the sound doesn't match the video because once he hits the power button we hear the beep. Something is not right.

if it`s just the HDD you could fix that problem in a HOUR for less than $50.

While I don't doubt for a second that some PS3s fail (no electronic device is without a faulty unit here and there), I don't think this is real. The clicking noise that would suggest a HDD failure is present even before he turned the unit on. That leads me to believe this one is a fake.

(first batch of 33% RROD consoles was ~12 Million (new elite systems are rumored to have a less horrible failure rate) 33%=4 Million, 2 Years market time = 2 Million RROD Xbox360 a year = a RROD Xbox360 every 16 seconds .... another one ..... another one .... another one .......

It probably is a real failure. I had a failure in my BD drive. When it came back from getting fixed, I started it and forgot to put the HDD in. (It took 9 days - apparently you have to vacuum the thing to keep dust out? I didn't know.)

Everything started up fine, but when the PS3 registered that there was no HDD inside I got a message saying, "Put an HDD in, retard." There were no yellow lights.

Over the years I've had maybe 5 hard drive failures on PC's - it happens, which is whay all my drives are now in RAID 5 config. :)

This video is a complete joke. There is noise being made before the person even powers up the unit. There is no voice explaining the problem or what is occurring. The video is up close almost as if the person is trying to hide something.

Is there a game in this unit? Did he put a game in this unit. Is everything plugged into the unit properly (video cable, optical / toslink (if one is being used)? If you really want to cry foul on Sony then make a better video and explain in detail exactly what the problem is.

And sorry but if I was bias against Sony (elines) this is the very last thing I would want to call attention too. The PS3 possibly having a problem a year after it's launch when no one else has ever claimed to have this problem before. Especially considering how horrible the 360 was / is with hardware issues.

I have never experienced any problems with my PS3 but then again I don't use my PS3 half as much as I do my 360's (I own 3). Although I and everyone I know has been through the RROD problem on the 360. Everyone of my 360 units had the RROD problem at least once.

Anyone that follows Elines post knows where he stands in the grand scheme of things on this site. Anyone that looks at my history will see I rarely even post under articles that are nothing but flamebait but this rubs me the wrong way considering what I have personally been put through with the 360.

Oh and BTW, this is not BS, I have only known one person to have a problem with the PS3 so far and Sony sent him a brand new (retail) 80g unit to replace it. His system bricked after an update. I will take that over getting a crappy refurb any day.

Just because there's a 0.02% failure rate on the PS3, vs. 35%+ on 360, there's no need to make yourself feel better. Isn't it clear? Sony is a hardware company, they make great products. I got something similar when i first bought mine, but found out it was because i was using a step-down transformer with my console as i wasnt aware it had a switching power supply built in (so the console was not at fault at all - i'd imported it from the US). i had my PS3 since launch no problem at all , but my 360 got error code say E74 so i have to send it back Microsoft to get it fix while still under repair i bought the Arcade the one with HDMi. I got my 360 back from repair shop and i sold it for $200

I think 1% failure is a bit low, I would venture to guess it's more like 5%. But the tollerable failure rate on all electronics is 10%. All electronics have bad bunches, it's just the way it works. Having under 10% failure rate is very good and very rare, having under 5% is almost unheard of for electronics, cars, toys, pretty much all consumer goods.

My first 60gb PS3 died 7 days exactly after I bought it, took it back to EB and they gave me a new one, that was over 9 months ago and haven't had a single problem since. Of all of my friends who have PS3s, no other ones have had any problems at all. I went through 5 PS2s over the 8 years it's been out. Sony learned from their mistakes, lets all hope Microsoft does too.

Is this Ps3 system out of the box since day one? Everyone knows when a system is brand new to market it takes a while for the bugs to show up. When the Ps2 came out I had problems 9 ps2's since the slim. One Ps3 has a problem and everyone flips out, the guy probably modded the system and screwed up. Sony will replace the system in the mail, or maybe this guy thaught "hmm I mess up the system Sony will send me a new one." Even so every system is not perfect, they all have their bugs. But after a while the bugs are worked out when the system has been out for a while.

You get a sporadic "my PS3 is broken" yes, but try to find any "our 20 release PS3 are all dead" from respected sources like IGN, their launch 360 are all dead, as stated by IGN... Thats just how it is, Sony offered folding@home because they KNOW that their system will not suffer from running 24/7. I work at the return center of the Wal-Mart in my college town and I have seen this only once. It was actually earlier in this week with one of the 40 gigs, and it happened just after the guy purchased it. As in it was something that was already wrong with it before the first start up. The only bad thing about a PS3 defecting is there is pretty much no way to get your disc out of the drive at that point.

In the same time though we probably get 7-10 broken Xbox360's in a week. We get maybe one broken PS3 a month. And a broken Wii about every two months, and usually it is the Wiimote that is broken on those.

So no don't forget the RROD, the PS3 and Wii are still much more reliable.

1. if it is the hard drive at fault it is completely user fixable if you do not wish to deal with sony then you don't have to just go down to your local computer store and buy a sata laptop hard drive for like 40 bucks cause now adays you can get a 50/60 gb hard drive for that much

The main problem is that 100% of XBox 360 consoles are prone to dying from RRoD.

It's a hardware design issue that cooler chips and heat pipes isn't going to solve.

When the problem was noted, Microsoft should have stopped production and had a full redesign of the internal unit and casing, but they're a software company and haven't the first clue about hardware, both the Hugebox and the 360 have proved this. I know Microsoft aren't designing the hardware, but the company that is needs to be dropped and Microsoft need to stop approving crappy ideas.

It was on for 4 months straight, and I went to sleep(Folding @ Home was on) and I woke up and the PS3 was on standby, the red light flashing. No idea what happened(overheat?) but I just simply flipped the switch in the back off and then back on, rubbed my finger on the power place, worked fine.. Been on for 4 weeks now.

Yep, it overheated. The PS3 has an internal thermostat, so that when it reaches a certain temperature, it automatically shuts down and goes into a locked stand by to prevent damage until the temperature drops.

I dont see how it could've overheated considering it's been on for months and it's been around 50-60 degrees in my room(i live in the country, always strong winds, blowing at my room, 150 year old farm house.. yeah) and I don't have a heater. Oh well. After that happened though I got an HDTV(cleared up alot of space on the table it was on) so i put the PS3 under it, its been colder honestly. Not saying the position made an effect on the heat, I think it was more the elevation.

How ironic that this article came out 3 days after this happened to my system. This video is not bs for all those that think it is. Mine did the exact same thing.

The clicking noise in the background, is exactly that, in the background(not the PS3). You turn it on, and it sounds normal for a second or two and then shuts itself off and the red light keeps blinking until you hit the power button again to put it back into standby(off mode).

I guess it's either the fan or the hard drive but I'm having it sent back to Sony either way since their picking up the tab anyway. It happened 361 days after purchase, if it would've happened 5 days later you'd have one upset gamer.

Btw- I think we're going to see more and more of this with all of the firmware updates adding more and more demanding tasks to the system. I recall more than one of the updates making the fan work harder than it had previously. More functionality comes with a price IMO.
