I won't lie, i really wish ps3/psp sold as much as wii/ds. The roles have really reversed. But like nintendo showed, the underdog can make a comeback. I like how xbox wasn't even featured in there, except for one tiny slither in 2002. The music is awesome too. Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions, yeah boi!!

exactly, tables have turned. In early ps era the consoles where great in sales but not really the most powerfull. i.e. N64(bit) vs Ps1(32 bit)

Now days Sony's PS3 is selling like N64 was compared to PS1. Yet PS3 is way more powerfull. The difference this gen though is were in the online era(firmware updates, bring home etc. unlike never seeing a 64HDD) and Sony supports its consoles for nearly a decade . So PS3 could see PS2 sales success eventually. they are 2 for 2 so far and could make it 3 for 3.

the thing i've always believed though is that when comparing the wii to ps3, it doesn't matter. They are 2 completely different consoles and they are going after completely different markets. So it doesn't matter to me. Its always more important to consider what the best actual console is, and out of the ps3 and wii, id have to say the ps3 outclasses the wii pretty easily. Even if it does sell less

you make a great point...since Sony will most likely support the PS3 for nearly a decade, it's hard to fully put the Wii in the PS1's shoes and the PS3 taking the role of the N64...plenty of time will have to pass in order to clearly tell this generation's story...they might BOTH end up being the PS1! wow, who knows...bubbles up...

As for me I own the 360 and do think that its better overall (so far) than the PS3 (sorry PS3 fanboys), but it just pisses me off how the 360 fanboys act (i know the PS3 fanboys are no better, but i just care more how the 360 fanboys act). a video like this makes it appear like Sony hardware has drastically declined in sales...which is not the case at all...its just that the Wii and DS have managed to pull in an entirely new segment of the market...The Wii and DS are selling like mad, but it has not really negatively impacted Sony overall yet...it so far appears to have only brought more people into gaming that otherwise would not have spent any money...

exactly why most intelligent people declare that the Wii and DS are not direct competition with anything Sony offers...and MS for that matter...the main battle is between the 360 and PS3 for the rest of the world...over 50% of the DS market has no idea that other gaming systems even exist most likely...

The 360 has sold about 0.55m and the ps3 1.75m in japan. Its not selling to good but I cant say the ps3 impresses to much either considering its dominance in this region the last decade. Nintendo really is back.

It marks the fact that Sony has dominated long enough to bring a console to the market that is sold at the highest price point because it is the most advanced console on the market. They are confident enough to do this now.

Its really the first time they have put this much (R&D) into a console well 2 machines cause psp is like an extension of the ps3. It shows they are putting all the money they made off psOne and ps2 right back into the playstation arm of the company in a condensed form which ends up as the psp/ps3. Which shows they plan to be in the Industry for a long time to come.

this doesn't mean sony are 'blowing it' because the market as a whole is being expanded by nintendo... they (ninty) are attracting a new audience so a percentage doesn't show sony necessarily loosing share but more 'nintendo are making the pie bigger'

the growth is nintendo's doing, sony are probably just holding onto their existing fanbase.

eventually tho' the 'casuals' who've got into gaming will eventually crave something a little more involved than cooking mama and that's where I think nintendo are weak.

If sony and ps3 can offer a nice middle ground, not too different to the wii type games but also offer the more involved stuff then they could be the overall winner of this gen (in Japan) again.

Truly unbelievable performances by Nintendo as of late.

I think Japanese tastes have changed, last gen is all forms of media PS2 advertising was prolific. This gen DS and Wii seem to be the must have devices with them (or close imitations of them) making many appearances in the recent animes I’ve seen with frequent ads.

It would seem handhelds and accessibility are the new money makers not technically better hardware and deeper hardcore games that have been in the past.

I’ve never been a big fan of Nintendo or their games so TBH I’d prefer Sony dominate than Nintendo.

Nintendo certainly deserve their success, they put a lot on the line with the DS and Wii and it has paid off big time, the DS and Wii really do print money.

And pie charts are only representative of the current standing and this generation's consoles lifespans aren't even near done (for some). Pie charts are useless unless you have final or near final data. We can look back and see the PS2's domination over its generation, but for the current generation you can't do that because it ISN'T DONE.

Its funny how PS3 sales for the 1st year are beating Xboxes for the 1st and are in line with PS2 for the 1st maybe even doing better since PS2 at this time was leveling off yet PS3 is climbing high, and kotaku (M$ shills) can still pretend Sony has blown it.

This gen was always going to be a challenge for Sony. They are the only company that really reached for the sky and there is a long way to fall. Not to knock the other twos approach but they really both just improved slightly what they already had without going out on a limb.

Sony risks might be larger but the payoff could be the biggest yet.

I can't rely on a Casual gaming console (I don't have a Wii), its just not happening. Work, College equals stress and then You have Car insurance to pay, but for me thats all I need to pay for!

I'm saving up money to book some laps at a track east of Scarborough.
Thats the real way to race, off the streets and on to a controlled safe environment.

Must remember that past PS consoles always have a slow start. Also people must understand that the Wii shouldn't be compared to the PS3. Although the wii is a home console. The quality of most of the games it has might as well be on the DS. I really don't see the difference between the DS and the wii with regards to games and unserbase(market)

I'm a big PS fan, but I'm glad that they don't have the huge market share they used to. Sony was getting lazy. Until recently I kept looking at my PSP and thought to myself that "you could do so much more!" Now that sony has competition, they have awoken and are now starting to put effort into supporting their products. Sony ALMOST always have the better tech.
