Is the Steam Box the PS3?

Valve has been the source of talk for a few days now with its rumored Steam based console. After thinking everything through and considering how Valve's console could change consoles forever, there is a chance Valve could already be working with Sony to bring Steam to the Playstation Brand.

Moncole4467d ago (Edited 4467d ago )

It can be for the Wii U because Valve wants to do online for it
http://gonintendo.com/?mode...

fluffydelusions4467d ago

Nah...most likely just some custom PC

chaos-lockheart4466d ago

I thought they already showed the steam console specs?

NewMonday4466d ago

can they get Steam to work as an OS and install games directly without windows?

Kurylo3d4466d ago

@newmonday

Anything is possible when you got money. And valve kinda has cornered the pc market... they own it.

Getowned4466d ago (Edited 4466d ago )

@Kurylo3d

You don't need money to make a OS, you just need the skill to and I'm sure they could probably do it they are after all programers and game makers. The real question would be is do they want to.

HappyGaming4466d ago

@Getowned
In the business world if you need skill you need to pay up.

I was also reminded of that rumor when I read the headline of this story.

Moncole4467d ago

And the Steam box is also a rumor but people are making like its real

morkendo234466d ago

I think it's crazy if you actually believe Sony will let Valve basically take over their platform.

And why did everyone think the PS3 slim was fake? They did the same thing with the PS2.

AM SURE A SLIM PS4 will come later on as well.

HappyGaming4466d ago

@morkendo23
You should write an article about it :P

Ocelot5254466d ago (Edited 4466d ago )

a console without harddrive = steambox? right...

trancefreak4466d ago

Maybe with a Ps4 Sony feels that it will need to team up with a partner to succeed but I think this is not envisioned on the PS3 platform. The life cycle of the ps3 is in its Prime and I can see it happening on new hardware just not on the ps3.

Maybe if the Rumor has any substance It could appear on a PlayStation deigned with valve in mind. We'll see.

FrankDrebin4466d ago

I hope it's an actual console!

*sigh* This rumor is getting out of hand.

Jason1434466d ago

but what if!! and then....!!!! omg

WitWolfy4466d ago (Edited 4466d ago )

Remember the PS3 slim rumors??? Everybody was like "ITS FAKE".."BS"...& amp; quot;WTF".. THEN BAM!!! It was real, sometimes the most less likely rumors can be true.

So im leaning on the plausible side for now, but not dismissing the fact that it could be INDEED fake.

caboose324466d ago (Edited 4466d ago )

But why would Sony let the whole steam platform on the PS3? It would make the PSN store irrelevant.

I think it's crazy if you actually believe Sony will let Valve basically take over their platform.

WitWolfy4466d ago (Edited 4466d ago )

WOWOWOWOWOW... I never said steam would come to PS3, Im talking the about the "STEAM Box" itself existing along side the current gen or next gen consoles.

I agree 100% with you STEAM WILL NEVER COME TO PS3.... EVER!

EDIT:Now that I read my previous comment it sure does seem like im suggesting that STEAM would be on PS3. Sorry for the confusion :)

sorceror1714466d ago

@caboose32 - I agree that letting the full Steam store onto the PS3 would be... er... counterproductive from Sony's point of view.

However, the "Steam Box" concept - *if* it's real at all - would almost certainly be a hardware *specification* rather than an actual lump of hardware, like Intel's "ultrabook" standard.

And then, *if* the PS4 actually is mostly-PC-hardware, then it could, in theory, be "Steam Box Certified". And then, Sony could make a *deal* with Valve to split sales onto the PS4. In that case, Valve gets some extra sales, and helps spread the "Steam Box" concept. Sony gets extra games for their console, and a share of revenue from the sales.

Long chain of hypotheticals there, of course. But it *does* reach a point where it's at least a sensible move for both companies. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how this all pans out.

ShiftyLookingCow4466d ago (Edited 4466d ago )

I would rather hand over my games to a real monkey than the author of this article.

"If Sony could convince Valve to bring the entire Steam platform to the PS3 it would be a huge blow to the competition. Steam is home to tons of games ranging from Doom all the way to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Being able to play your entire Steam collection to the big screen, without having to purchase any additional hardware would be one of the most amazing features is recent memory."

Wow! According to this guy, Cell = x86! This is beyond ignorance.

caboose324466d ago

Haha exactly, people just love to let their minds run wild.

is the sun the moon?

is cornflour gold?

are people really dogs?

Voxelman4466d ago

The sun does create the light that we see as the moon

Cornflour does have a gold color

Some people can be real dogs sometimes

lol

Nitrowolf24466d ago (Edited 4466d ago )

braydon6194466d ago

I dunno man... your theories make sense.

have you ever seen the moon and the sun in the same together? NO! it's because they're the same person :O

I have no idea what cornflour is honestly :(

and Iike to do it doggy style, so perhaps we are!

Beeeaans4466d ago

You can and often do see the moon and the sun in the same sky lol

Getowned4466d ago

I have seen the moon and the sun in the sky often they are not the same "person".Flaming ball of fire is not the same as flooting ball of rock.

OC_MurphysLaw4467d ago

If the PS3 was the Steambox then what happened to cross game support for Counter Strike: Global Offense. If anything Valve took a step back from current consoles with that move.

caperjim4466d ago (Edited 4466d ago )

I was about to post the same comment until i seen yours. Maybe one of the big reasons valve pulled cross-play with PS3--PC is because they are going to do it with their own console.

A steam console would use the same version of the game as PC. Therfore updates/patches will be released the same time for both without all the red tape that a patch must go through on a regular console.

Soldierone4466d ago

Ugh no cross platform play just because they want to release updates all the time? Kinda lame.

KeiserSosay47884466d ago

Valve stopped the cross game support because of their issue with simultaneous patches for PS3 and PC mp. It would make PC gamers have to wait because of the increased difficulty of patching games on consoles. This way they are separate and consoles can get their patches that cost WAY too much money and PC can get their patches on a regular basis.

trenso14466d ago

So there is no cross game support on CS:GO?

SSultan4467d ago

I never, ever liked the name "Steam". Ever. When it first came out in my teens I couldn't help but think of a "Steaming pile of sh*t". Not at all implying that Steam is sh*t cause it's really not. But now this name "Steam Box" is getting thrown around and I can't help but think of something along the lines of a litter box or even a toilet. Don't ask why, I have just never been able to shake that thought off.

4logpc4467d ago

I literally lol'd

Now thats all im gonna think about when i read steam box

darx4467d ago

You never thought that.

SSultan4466d ago

Having to go from standalone CS 1.5 to something called "STEAM" to play 1.6? Yes I did indeed think that, and from my first post I clearly still do. But why? Probably because at the age I was a little too immature and used "STEAMING" to describe those trophy turds. You know, the kind where you get up off the toilet and nearly have a heart attack cause you didn't even remember eating that much.

NarooN4466d ago

@dark

Why kinda asinine thing is that to say? How can you tell someone ELSE what they did or didn't think?

Sony CEO says although AI "has been used for creation," it's "not a substitute for human creativity"

"AI is not a substitute for human creativity. We position it as a technology that supports creativity. Creativity resides in people. We will continue to contribute to people's creativity through technology," the CEO said.

...not yet but 100% within the next 10 years!

..Then Sony will use it like the drop of a hat. They're no different to the others.

isarai4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

They used to be 😞 sure it was always a business, and money's always the priority, but they used to have a very strong stance on supporting artists and creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" was a phrase they touted a few times back in the ps1-ps3 era, a philosophy carried over from their music branch PlayStation was created from. It's not COMPLETELY gone, but it's barely there compared to what it was back then, i just want them to return to that.

Eonjay4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I am highly encouraged by their statement about human creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" is exactly what they are saying. But at the same time, I don't think people understand that Sony is a corporation. If they don't realize growth, they don't get to exist. When you say 'Sony', you are talking about a bunch of investors. To speak about them any other way is a illogical and incorrect. They haven't changed. They have been a group of investors since they became a public business.

isarai4d ago

Ugh, i really wish people would stop gambling people's livelihoods by turning a project/game into their political soapbox. Im all for statements and having your own opinion, but there's more people working on this than just druckman, ham fisting your political beliefs onto just seems inconsiderate for everyone elses job security when it can result in a failure due to people avoiding it for that reason.

I play games for escape, im so tired of nearly every AAA game blatantly dragging real world issues to shove in my face when I'm trying to take a break from it all. They don't even bother to be subtle about it, quite the opposite, it's blasted and force fed to you and it's just getting exhausting

Einhander19724d ago

People are taking a whole interview and cutting it down to clips that make him look bad and take what he actually was saying out of context. For example he also said things like this AI has "ethical issues we need to address"

-Foxtrot4d ago

@Einhander

Why defend him at this point?

It’s not taking things out of context, he said what he said.

Old ND would never talk about soulless AI taking over so many creative things they are well known for. The whole “ethical issues” is just a good PR spin people who push this crap fall back on to make their statements not seem as bad. So many AI lovers do this.

AI has no place is so many creative based things.

Einhander19724d ago

Well yeah, because everyone else is using it so they need to stay competitive. It's the same as paid online, they didn't want to go that route but their competition was making so much money they needed to add paid online just to keep up.

RaiderNation4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

AI will never replace humans in game development in terms of conceptualizing new games. Humans still need to come up with the ideas and what they want to implement. However much of the day to day menial coding could be AI driven to reduce production time and team size. I could also see AI being used for bug testing/optimization that could lead to better quality games at launch. I'm actually very optimistic about how AI can positively impact game development.

Good statement but hopefully this holds up

NotoriousWhiz4d ago

People that aren't software developers just don't understand the benefits of AI. People who's only exposure to A.I is the Terminator movie and other related sci fi films won't understand the benefits it provides.

It's not about replacing human labor. It's about making human labor easier.

Many years ago, I had laser eye surgery done. It was performed by a robot. The doctor took my measurements and calibrated the machine to make sure it would do what needed be done. And then the robot corrected my vision in 10 seconds.

15 years later and I still have 20/20 vision.

Eonjay4d ago

AI in and of itself is not a 'bad'. Money is bad. Money is evil, and corporations will do whatever they can to get more of it. They will find ways to implement AI to replace as may jobs as possible. This isn't even up for debate. It is the charge of the corporation to maximize returns for the investors. They have no choice. I'm a developer and I know that my job will absolutely be replaced. Therefore, I have decided to become an AI dev. AI has a lot of potential to help us solve problem on a scale most can't even imagine. The issue, as ever is that our monetary system only ever allows us to focus on greed and fiscal growth.

But I am a pragmatist. Perhaps an AI model can be built to help protect us from our most dangerous instincts and habits. And perhaps Congress can pass laws to protect us from people who would use AI to manipulate and control us (spoiler: they wont).

RaiderNation3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Progress is inevitable. Nobody driving cars today is complaining that the horse and buggy is no longer around. Yes, some jobs will be lost but guess what? With innovation comes new job opportunities. It's how the cycle of the job market works.

Unannounced Valve 6v6 Shooter MOBA Footage Leaked

ESTNN writes: "A leak for Valve's 6v6 3rd-person shooter MOBA has supposedly been released ahead of time. And if the reports are true, fans of the genre have much to be excited for."

JunonZanon4d ago

Valve really cannot count to 3.

Number1TailzFan4d ago

They should've had a new L4D like 10 years ago, it can be expanded upon a lot more but they just left it collecting dust.. it was a good game for its time but L4D2 doesn't have nearly enough content these days to keep players engaged, and it needs a serious graphics upgrade

mastershredder4d ago

Nice bend at the knee there Gabe. Seriously? A quirky character arena shooter? This late into the me-too-shooter market? I thought you guys were so much better than that crap. Gabe must need a bigger yacht.

kitano19474d ago

clown comment, valve are famous for letting their devs work on whatever they want as they have no share holders to please. hence why we rarely get games from valve but when we do they generally are great.

icefrog, the original modder who created dota on warcraft 3 is working on this with some other members at valve.

@prince
I'm confused. Does that number mean total players at one time playing like a snapshot
or total sales? If it's the former that's not very accurate because I know I'm not the only person that buys games and plays them later and that number is not included.

RNTody10d ago

Great, I loved this game. Definitely think it's Sucker Punch's best work to date!

rippermcrip10d ago

Is this going to be the new thing thing? Articles about Steam reviews? Which of course was in response to the false article about the review bombings in the first place.

Christopher9d ago

Hey, just a heads up that the new owners did open news to Steam updates, but we try our best to not allow them to go on daily updates unless relevant to some other news. I understand this isn't everyone's cup and tea and sympathize, but the door has been open. If you feel it's 'too much' please do PM me or submit a ticket to the mod team. Thank you.

shinoff21839d ago

I came here to post this link in that specific article. 84 perce t is pretty good. How many bad reviews were there like 5

GamerzElite10d ago

This is good game and Ghost eliminate all fake outrage.

CrimsonWing699d ago (Edited 9d ago )

I always get confused by this, but is 72k good sales numbers for a game? I keep seeing games fail at selling 2.5 million and that they need to be on multiple platforms but is an additional 72k adding much?

Fishy Fingers9d ago

Im not sure how its confusing :\

72k actively playing. Not 72k sold.

A good example is Helldivers 2, 6m sold, 450k (at its peak) active players.

But how many swords swung is what we're all really waiting for.

shinoff21839d ago

Lmao. How many swords swung. I was hoping for how many steps

wesnytsfs9d ago

And its how many years old from initial release.

Crows909d ago

72k is concurrent
...that is not the sold figure.

Michiel19899d ago

for one they already had a huge launch on the playstation, they don't need to sell 5m to make the porting to pc profitable and as pointed out below that number you see is just the people playing it at this moment.

Plague-Doctor279d ago (Edited 9d ago )

Also from the insomniac leak we know these PC ports are a quick turnaround and budgeted around $2-4 million. At 100k sales they break even including Steams cut. They may not sell millions but they are a great ROI

elazz9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

72k concurrent. That is a global number. People who bought the game are not playing at the same time because of timezones, working schedules, holidays, events... There is no good rule of thumb but you can extrapolate based on other games that also released sales data. Then it is clear that the PC release alone accounts for at least 500K copies sold on steam, maybe closer to 700-800K. Probably will sell over a million this extended weekend.

According to steamspy and other data gathering sites games like Days Gone, Spider Man, God Of War, Horizon Zero Dawn have sold 2 to 5 million copies on Steam. So I expect Ghost to reach similar numbers. Probably even surpass it.
