Service Restoration Update

As you may know, we’ve begun the process of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system. We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online.

As you’ve heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won’t restore the services until we can test the system’s strength in these respects.

When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incred...

Thankfully, Brink has an awesome campaign. It's basically the same thing as online except you're playing with bots.

All character progression and customization carries over into the online portion of the game. That's the only fact keeping me from going insane.

3 Weeks is very lengthy and people's patience will be tested, but if they aren't going to take this time to secure the network then they are just setting themselves up for even more problems.

Sony NEEDS to learn their lesson here and needs to make sure that they don't make the same mistake twice.

I'd rather have a closer estimate, even if they might have to break it. I'd rather be disappointed today, than have been wondering for the past two weeks when within the month Sony was going to bring PSN back online.

OK i am pissed at balls, i am waiting for the network to get back up to activate and transfer data to new system so i havnt be able o play jack shyt since its been down since most my downloadables are mostly onlne only. on top of that i have been waiting months and months for Brink and i swear if i cant play it online when i pick that up on the 10th i am gonna be pissed, this is really beomming a joke. used to feel like Playstation was hands down above and beyond xbox, but after this fiasco i am having second thoughts, a great stable network is a PRIORITY!!!

I played a demo of Brink today on an GameStop location (360 version) and the game looks incredible awfull, it has lots of pop ups textures and the control doesnt felt rigth. Edit: Moneygun2... the demo was representative of the final product. Yes there are some exceptions like the Killzone 3 demo, the final build looked way better than the demo but the gameplay was representative. Brink in the other hand suffers from both graphics and gameplay. Im not telling anyone to believe me, just play it when you can. I was in awe when I saw the demo at my local Gamestop but not because how good it was. Some games fail to live to the hype and to me this is one of these games. PEACE GAMERS!!

They also said that the game is being made for PC and ported to consoles, and I've seen an interview with the lead designer where he said that he is just "Showing the press that the PS3 and 360 versions will look identical".

This is not as big an issue to me. I've got plenty of single player games to play. :) InFamous, Uncharted 2, Gran Turismo 5, Battlefield BC2, etc. etc.

Single player is WAYYYY less fun. Its much more fun to go into a room and have fun with people all chatting together than play against emotionless AI.

GT5 is a great example of that. racing the AI is boring a hell. They never defend, they hardly go for the difficult pass. Mistakes are very rare. Not anywhere near as fun as multiplayer. Especially multiplayer with buddies.

I called this happening a few days ago.....Having played on the Playstation consoles most of my life; I've become used to Sony's bullshit "expected dates"

Now I know the following examples aren't Sony's fault, but still. I'm used to shit getting delayed after it's been promised on a certain date.

Socom 3 Map Pack. Month after month after month. Months eventually turned into a year before the map pack came out.
Rainbox Six: Vegas. Got delayed six months in a row.

PISS OFF SONY, my roommate and his friend offered to pay my first 3 years of Xbox Live if I bought an Xbox, I'm this close to ditching your dumbasses. Now I know where crackheads/failures/homeless go to get a job, SONY's software/security divison.

somethings really wrong here. they've had supposedly the best network security people around working on this since that press confrence and one of those guys wasn't smart enough to say " hey mabye you shouldn't tell people it will be ready this week because we don't know how much testing is needed" this is f#cked!! i never should of invested in a second ps3.

The people in charge of updating Sony's blog are probably not the same people in charge of fixing their network. They have separate teams for that.

For the people going nuts right now, Sony said "within the week". The network could be back up by Sunday night. The system needs to be more secured before this crap happens again. Go play some single games or something. That's what I'm doing-been doing it since the network got shot down by stupid hackers. These things take time-given the nature of the situation.

Without Sony, there's no competition in the gaming industry, period. We need all three in competition.

Let me just say... people on here have NO CLUE how hard (or easy) it is to secure a network (and neither do I)... so let's just trust what they say. I seriously doubt they're all just sitting around just to watch us squirm. You know it's hurting them too... not just their customers.

True I doubt they are sitting around twiddling their thumbs... but I do have an idea of how long it takes to secure a Network and have run into similar situations of Network Securing myself. I knew from day one of them saying that it would be up hopefully in 7 days was more PR then a true answer. No way can you do a resecure of a system and expect it to actually be secure in that time frame. Especially if you are still researching how the breach occured in the first place, and what levels of security issues are promanent within your network.

Once again higher ups wanting to put out an answer that appeases the masses when sometimes it is not the best thing to do. "Let's tell them the best scenario and use the... we didn't fully understand the extent of the attack line when we can't make that day." That's no different then the Japanese always saying yes when they mean no when you talk to them... seriously they have a hard time telling you something that is negative, just a fact.

I think online gaming has spoiled a lot of us.

It wasn't that long ago where games were just single player with offline multiplayer. The world did not end after single-player. We'd play it again, or call some friends over and battle it out.

With more tech, comes more problems. This was bound to happen one time or another.

So for those who are impatient, maybe don't hang on to every word about the update/timeline that's being said or you're just going to set yourself up for more disappointment.

When it's back up, you'll know.

all im saying is the ps3 is not cheap. With all the money we CONSUMERS spend on ps3, the least they could do is hire the best at network security. If you spent money fixing your toilet, you expect it to not leak after u spend all that money to fix it right? Especially when PSN users put their credit card info. There is no excuse. What did you expect...? Really... what? Do you get angry because they didn't live up to their forcast for repair or do you just hope it comes back up and isn't as unsecure as it was before?

I am throwing 2 cents out and thinking that reports of a possible reattack (or testing as they claim) was going to happen as soon as PSN was back up and running. Obviously that would make you rethink about putting a system back online that was really ready to go back online. If they put it back up this week and it gets hacked again straight away then no amount of PR will get them out of the dog house.

Now they probably realized they can't half ass the system restore and better do their OWN testing prior to just slapping the old system back up under a different security umbrella. More then likely someone from the lower levels FINALLY were able to tell the higher ups that their expectations are too grand and that better to put a good system back up then just getting the system up as quickly as possible.

Sucks to be waiting on this... but as my mom and others have often said.... Better to do something right the first time instead of having to do it again later. And when you are living in the Tech world that has no better point then in your network security.

i am not trying to repeat a post i dun on another story but i fill this is relevent information about psn going back on line i found this out2day and it is cormfirmed Sony said on Saturday it had removed off the Internet the personal details of 2,500 people that had been stolen by hackers and posted on a website.

The data included names and some addresses, which were in a database created in 2001, a Sony spokeswoman said.

Sony also said it would delay the restart of its PlayStation Network despite having said last Sunday that it would begin restoring services within the week. A spokeswoman said on Saturday this would not be possible, and that no date had been fixed for the restart.

Sony has really dropped the ball this time. It's one thing to tell us they EXPECTED to have PSN online this week, but they told us it WOULD be online this week. Their handling of this situation has been ridiculous and I'm beginning to lose faith in them as a company.

I played Xbox for years before I got my PS3.. and they're starting to make me wish I had stayed loyal to my Xbox.

Times like these It's good to have options. There's nothing wrong with being loyal to one brand or another, but when you put all your eggs in one basket and said basket breaks. Your stuck defending a basket that's pretty much worthless.

A lot of you will disagree with me here and that's fine, but I said this sometime ago about psn and was destroyed by the sony faithful but I'm going to say it again. PSN is a great service to me but in my opinion it could have been better from the start. I personally feel that Sony did not take online gaming serious enough and only included it in the ps3 as a way to combat xbox live not necessarily beat it. In other words they simply threw a product together and years later a rag tag band of basement dwellers exposed the flaws of that product all around. Sony is great with hardware hands down one of the best, but you can easily see here they did not put as much effort as they could have into psn. Good news it will have to come back stronger than ever. No matter how many of us may defend the "games" the "quality" and "strength" of the playstation brand. This situation will be in the back of everyone's mind for quite a while whether you support playstation or not.

While this doesn't meet my time table of when i wanted to see PSN back up and running, I rather have them take their time and get it right.

I bought a PS3 right before this happened. It's a very slight disappointment that i can't use online. But at the end of the week or two (that they are talking) I rather see that they are confident with putting PSN back up.

I think some of us forget just how daunting of a task this is for them. They have to rework everything from the ground up under a time table aimed to please people that are used to instant gratification.

My buddy that I play SSF4 with for the past couple of years sent me an MMS yesterday with his new xbox360. This from a guy who couldn't stand the idea of paying to play on xbox live.

Bought a used xbox360, used copy of SSF4 and a fightstick. I couldn't stop laughing. The guy couldn't handle the two weeks of training mode. $310 bucks to cure the online jones.

On the East coast, it was 9am and my PS3 turned on all on its own for an automatic update. I thought it was a firmware update meaning PSN was up and running. I checked and it was still down. BUT, the start up only happens when a connection is established. I think that may have potentially been a dry run and should be up REAL soon.
