I would love to see a re-design or slimming of the 360 personally. I have held off buying a new one waiting on word of a slimmed down version. In the end though Sony had more to gain by redesigning it earlier and MS has everything to lose if they botch the redesign as bad as the launch systems were botched.

Redesign plus reliability would be the best thing MS can do.

Redesign plus problems will be suicide for MS.

I do believe we will hear more and more rumblings of a slim as Natal grows closer to launch.

I think I have to agree with sunny there syko... Firstly, the 360 is having major reliability issues as of now. M$ has to take care of it now and then think about releasing a Slim.

The first thing they have to do is get that fu*ing power supply in the 360's @ss. Then, think about shrinking the size. At the most, I expect them to integrate Natal in a 360 but even that seems unlikely as Natal seems like the size of the 360 itself.... But reliability is a key factor here. People will still be skeptical about buying a 360 Slim at launch...

Well not that I need to prove my "credibility" or anything but you are talking to a 360 launch owner (Nov. 22nd 2005) Since then I have been through 5 dead 360's all with a different problem...They have all been fixed for free and while it is a PoS the new systems are a lot more reliable and all my friends that bit the bullet and just bought a new arcade haven't had any problems. Where as I have been stuck in the MS refurbished PoS loop and they keep falling apart piece by piece.

Basically what I was saying was Sony had the luxury of not having to triple check their redesign because the original design was spot on...Not to mention Sony is first and foremost a hardware manufacturer. Unlike MS who is a software manufacturer first. This combined with the billion dollar RRoD fiasco is probably making MS comb over any potential redesign with a fine tooth comb and you can bet your ass they wont bring it to market until it is proven bulletproof.

It just blows my mind that people with PS3's only can sit there and justify not playing a ton of bad ass games and experiencing LIVE which is light years beyond PSN, because of a system that might break. It has a 3 year warranty get over it.

microsoft HAD and HAS the money to spend.they could have paid someone else to make it for them.wait,they did.but went with shoddy parts.to gain consumer respect,you make sure you have a product that's worth buying.to most of us,it's not worth the effort you are going through to play those games.microsoft has billions,but was not willing to spend that for the consumer.

My PS3 broke already while my 360 Elite is still running strong. However, if a person can't afford both consoles, I will recommend a PS3 over a 360 due to hardware reliability. I feel that you have to play the percentages here. I am not a Sony loyalist by any means but I feel a lot safer with Sony's hardware.

I think its safe to say the Ps3 has more actual exclusives, that are recent. "A TON OF GAMES!!" What is this ton of games you speak of? If you throw out cross game chat and invites (which I don't use or want to use) how is Live light years better than PSN? I'm claiming ignorance here as I really don't know.

We all know that the 360 is a POS hardware wise, but what I like most about my 360 is Live Arcade. Now that is light years ahead of PSN and is the main reason I bought a 360. I prefer my PS3 overall, but I could not imagine not having a 360 because of Arcade and Mass Effect.

I do feel a little dirty though playing Shadow Complex and hearing Nathan Drake's voice. Cool game though :)

Alright, Light years might be (Is) an overstatement. Overall though these people claiming that PSN is right behind LIVE and is only missing Cross Game Chat are joking themselves. I have had both systems for years and never purchase the same game on both systems, obviously...The 360 runs smoother, although not noticeable enough if you don't play the other version to compare. The friend, Invite and messaging structure are much better. And everyone communicating with a mic is a big plus, although there are sometimes when it is annoying as hell.

It's not light years...but it is much, much better. Of course if you go by N4G standards it is garbage and a rip-off at $40 a year. =)

All I am saying is play it for yourself and form an honest opinion instead of being like a lot of these people and bombing into a 360 story and spouting off at the mouth about RRoD and PS3 rules type crap.

The funny thing about those stats is that, I have yet to have a 360 die on me. All of my friends who own one...same thing. 1 out of 67 of my Xbox LIVE friends had a failure. But, yes I do think it does need a redesign. Why? If these stats are in fact, true, then it does. Period.

The ps3 was HUGE it was like twice the size of the 360. Plus it looked like a grill. Everyone on this site seen the photoshop ps3/grill pics.

So the 360 is smaller then the ps3 (have to wait and see how it compares to the slim) its smaller then the 1st xbox was, its probably smaller the N64 was might be smaller then the gamecude (hard to tell gc was so tall). Think the 360 it about the same size as the ps2 (not the slim one) or a sega saturn. Plus if they just made the 360 thinner it look god awful. As it is the best looking game system since the dreamcast.

The PS3 fat is still smaller than the 360. The thing that shocks me the most about the 360 size is that there is nothing inside. The thing that takes up the most room is the DVD drive and the heat sink about 60% is empty space. They could easily do a redesign but hardware is not Microsofts strong point.

even with the current design which has the external power brick, the damn thing still overheats and the DVD drive sounds like a jet engine! (I know it's a little overstatement) but you know what I'm up to here! in order to come up with a slimmed down version, M$ will have to overcome the design issues with their current models which they still have not even after a couple of versions! but honestly I don't think the slim version is needed because people seem happy with current 360s and it still cost less at $199 plus 3 years warranty! The 360's already generate a lot of heat. Scaling down the size will cut off airflow and make RROD's more common. The 360 CPU is already 45 nm, so they can't shrink it any further right now.

The PS3 has just as many bad ass games if not more then the 360.As
for live being light years ahead of the PS3 what the hell have you
been smoking this is not 2006 this 2009 and PSN has evolved greatly
in that amount of time.Considering live has been around since the
first Xbox if PSN was around that long im sure it would be light
years ahead of live.Live has one thing that PSN dose not YET which

I like to look at it his way. For everything on the 360, there is a superior counterpart on the ps3. You guys get halo. Nice. We get Killzone2, Resistance and Resistance 2. You get forza, we get GT5. You get Ninja gaiden 2, we get ninja gaiden sigma 2. You get gears of war, we get Uncharted, and soon to be Uncharted 2 and Quantum. Do you see where I am going with all of this?

I picked ps3 mainly for two reasons: First off, I really dont care about blu ray cuz I'm not that much into movies. But I got ps3 for superior hardware and for a continuation of franchises I love like God of War and killzone. Lucky for me I'm getting sooo much more than I bargained for. =)

You can't sit there and tell me KZ2's matchmaking is superior than bungies Halo 3? To say there are superior counterparts on the PS3 is completely subjective. I enjoyed the hell out of KZ2 but I still prefer Halo 3 over it. Never played Resistance or Resistance 2 so I won't comment on those. I have not played Uncharted but I have played the demo and do not see how that can be compared to Gears in any shape or form as they are not the same type of game. As for Ninja Gaiden 2 and Sigma 2, I'll give the edge to Sigma 2 for now simply because of the additional content but the game was released on the 360 over a year ago so we should expect it to be better on the PS3.

I'm buying a ps3 slim the day it comes out. I love my 360. I have a gaming capable pc.

If you think that for a minute I would want to go through the hassle of hooking up my pc to my tv so I can enjoy a game with surround sound on my 65" TV, while relaxing on the couch, you're nuts. I used to game on my PC, sitting there with a comfy office chair and keyboard or controller...but sorry, any PC game that comes to a console - I buy the console version.

No need to upgrade my video card for just 1 game anymore, every year. No need to hunch over in a chair, no need for any of it.

I've been happy to stop gaming on PC, prefer consoles 100% now.

Ps3 games take xbox 360 games and offer more / make them better.

If you are a diehard shooter fan, xbox gives you halo. Ps3 gives you killzone2, resistance 1 and resistance 2. If you love the 3rd person shooter cover system, xbox gives you gears, ps3 gives you uncharted, uncharted 2 and quantum ( which in my opinion will be better than the cliche gears). If you love realistic racing, xbox gives you forza 3, ps3 gives you GT5 (GT5 has twice as many tracks, twice as many cars, twice as many cars on the track during a race, etc). If you are into superhero sandbox games, xbox gives you prototype, ps3 gives you prototype + infamous. If you are into movies, xbox gives you dvd, ps3 gives you blu ray. Come on...

The only department I would say the ps3 is behind is in online playing. And even at that, PSN is quickly catching up.

But, with the 360 Almost (if not) ALL exclusives have been released to the PC.

Fair enough, Perhaps an overstatement.

But the one game that I have played on both systems and logged 30+ hours online and off has been UFC: Undisputed, The game on the 360 runs great and never slows down. The single player on PS3 has it's moments of slowdown. UFC on LIVE is 10x better and less lag than on PSN.

In the end though the unified structure of LIVE goes deeper than just "Cross Game Voice Chat" that in itself is as much an understatement as perhaps my overstatement of LIVE being that much better.

PSN has better downloadable games that are a hell of a lot better than on XBLA. but in the end I love LIVE as compared to PSN.

Nothing to freak out over, just my opinion. lol

my 5th was the last one I got fixed through MS. Then I bought a arcade model from best buy with a 2 year warranty. Luckily I did cause that one fizzled and I got a new one under my new warranty. Im good until April 12th of next year. So Im prepped if anything happens.

Im a multiconsole owner this gen and am nothing but really happy about it. Even when I bought my 60 gig PS3, I got a warranty. Because technology runs its own course and you can't predict the wear you put on it. Everything I get electronically, I always get warrantys if available. It just makes sense to me. No matter what it is!

360 is built like a piece of crap. But I use it for enough stuff, that I dish it out to stick with it. I refuse to miss out on my 90% of friends personal and only on Live, because my friends list on PSN is pathetic... mainly cause for whatever reason my headset won't link. So I can't talk and make friends on there. Which then keeps me from having the most fun outta my PS3. Free PSN for me isn't a big deal when you can't get your headset to connect so you can interact with people.

Im well aware of 360's problems, Im not an idiot. I just consider myself more passionate about my #2 hobby that is gaming, than TONS of people on here. I'd go through this s#!t even it were with PS3 to keep up with their awesome gaming library, as I know deep down the fanboys would too!. It goes all ways my friends!

P.S. = I recently downloaded MvC2 offa PSN and I don't have my full roster of fighters? I thought I was supposed to?

From your post, you mentioned something about friends list. So it seems like one of the main reasons for the 360, which I have heard from quite a few people is that "they have a sizable number of friends on the 360 but not the ps3".

If all your friends moved from xbl to psn, would you still think the xbox is so great? It raises the question of if you are playing the xbox for yourself or for your friends.

I'd still play between both consoles, thus why Im inlove with the exclusives both consoles provide. I like having the best of both worlds!

Im not playing 360 more for my friends, I play 360 on Live more than PS3 on PSN... simply because playing with your friends provides more of a fun gaming environment and makes it more enjoyable to play!

and about MvC2 on PSN. I've heard something of unlock codes? and something of also needing to download the demo? I went straight to the full game... and still have no full roster. I don't get it!

The overheating problem and RRoD can be fixed very easy. All you need to do is open X360 and add 3 PC fans. When you buy a flashed X360 it would already have modded extra fans in it. Aftering adding extra fans the RRoD rate drastically reduces to nearly nil. There is E74 but thats another thing.

So, if a modder at home can fix RRoD by simply adding extra fans in x360, why cannot MS do this?

Quite simple answer, sales. After you built a huge libary of games you would by a new console to play them again. Its quite a known fact alot of people have 2 X360s, so they can still play when one is on repairs, when warranty is out just buy a new one.

Live is really laggy. Every game lag is part of the strategy.
I have great connection & it doesn't matter.
Peer 2 peer to play competetive? Sorry, I'm a serious online gamer & live doesn't cut it for the games. Xbox360 is a great big overpriced walkie talkie. The excuse to pay for live now is it's a social device. Like I said, I'm a serious online gamer not a little 11 year old girl.

Xbox360's controller feels really good though I give it that. It's ugly but surprising how well it fits the form of your hands. But you plug the mic in it & it needs batteries so I rather a mad Katz controller if I'm looking for comfy controls you know?

PSN wouldn't be what it is. It's because of Live that Sony even knew and continue to find out what to do with PSN. Sure PS3 has HOME, I've used it lots before until lately I can't hold a decent connection to it for whatever reason. But HOME isn't even what I've been promised. I know everyone's gonna say, "fix the current system before trying to reduce the system," but a redesign might be just what the 360 engineers need to add whatever it is to solve the existing problems while simultaneously reducing overall costs from material and so forth.

Bet Micro has a new 360 sku in the works which includes the Natal Module (as I just now coined the term) by default, is reduced in size, may include a slot-loading drive in place of the current tray-loader and costs at least 50 dollars less.

As you are well aware by now, Sony has announced their new $299 Slim PS3 that will be available the first week of September. I am happy for Sony and their Playstation customers. The Slim PS3 is 33% smaller and 36% lighter than the previous models. And their console is now half the price of their launch console in less than 3 years. I realize that Sony is primarily an electronics company and this plays to their strengths.

So where is our redesigned Slim XBOX 360?

You have been on the market for a full year longer than Sony. And given all the 360 reliability problems alone, you would think that you would have been the FIRST to redesign your console. I was really hoping to see an XBOX 360 Slim by now. In fact, I would just be happy if you fixed your reliability issues and moved the power brick into the current console form factor. That alone would be an incredible design victory right there.

Online rumors seem to indicate that you will drop the price of the current 360 Elite to $299. But that is hardly on par with Sony's recent announcement. Why?
You don't have Blu-ray (subtract $100)
You don't have built-in wireless (subtract $50)
You are allegedly removing the HDMI cable (subtract $20)
You charge for online (subtract $50)
Given the above, I would NOT expect you to deliver the same old Elite 360, with the huge power brick and minus the HDMI cable, for $299. That is hardly a deal by comparison. Of course, this is all rumor and speculation, not fact.

If you are not up to the task, can you back up an 18-wheeler full of money and dump it in my front yard? Along with a 360 Elite console and a postcard on it asking him "Can you redesign this for us? Thanks!"

A redesign would save you money in terms of manufacturing the console, just as it does Sony. A smaller 360 would use more consolidated and cheaper components, and less packaging, as such, more units would fit in less retailer warehouses and shelf space, and cost less to ship per unit as well, etc. The cost savings are not just in building the 360 alone.

games are games, no matter what format they are on. I've got DVD9 in my 360 and Blu-ray in my PS3 and you know what the difference is that they do? Nadda!... It's a game console first and foremost. I have a larger Blu-ray movie collection than games collection though for my 60 gig cause of the fact I mainly use my PS3 only for the exclusives it gets.

When you factor in more people most definatley running their televisions offa converter boxes insted of actually affording to go the full tv route (given the times we're in), Blu-ray movies just don't make sense to most people right now. Thus name dropping Blu-ray being built into PS3, not really mattering or doing much for people!

Also, I swap my HDMI cable between my PS3 and 360 all the time. I always knew 360 having a HD converter cable in the pro-models at least. While I've NEVER heard of PS3 giving any cable of HD capabilities out with each console. I remember having to first play Resistance on my PS3 with the component cables it came with, it looked like a PS2 game... until I got my HDMI cable!

Also litterally almost ALL my personal friends own 360's, it already makes paying for Live worth it, not to metion all the functions and support it gets. You see Live getting more arcade releases and features before PSN because paying for it provides that ability. It helps fund the advancing of Live. If it weren't for people buying games on PSN or clothes and stuff in HOME, I'd really be affraid to see where PSN would even be right now to be honest!

I dont see how you would implement it in genres like fighting or rpg. I personally prefer so hold a controller (dualshock preferably) in my hands. Natal might be fine for the next dance revolution game or whatever. But that is of no interest to me.

I'm with you there man. Another problem with natal and sony's motion controllers is that they will only be catering to the people who own a 360 or ps3 and not a wii. I mean, why buy a motion controller when you already have one that works pretty much the same?

The Wii has got the market cornered at this point. I mean, the casual people aren't going to pick it up, and only the people interested or know about the software that own the ps3 or 360 will buy it.

I guess I wouldn't put much faith in it either, but anything can happen.

Internet lag is only caused by following
"Where your house locates"
"What company your internet connection is"
"Where the game host server is"
"Lagging problem in the game itself"

If you got faster connection in Live, it is because the conditions above fit into Live. Same for PSN.

But I do agree Live chat is really good feature and it is good to be in PSN. Then again, it is free. What do you want for free? If Sony puts Chatting in PSN, fine. I don't claim for that.

Personally I agree with you mostly but as a fanboy I dissagree more because my point about redundant gaming implies that xbox360 games improve technically nothing where as ps3 games are making huge strides since thier previous installment. My perfect example is halo & gears vs resistance & metal gear solid 4.
Resistance 1 released online lagless with 40 players & next gen graphics. Resistance 2 added 300 hours of gameplay & gave us better servers & 20 more gamer slots to fill. Mgs4 added next gen graphics, superb quality & online on the disc with a built in online browser for the mgo reward shop straight from konami. The content is limitless. Almost all ps3 games all playing beyond what we thought is possible while 360 gamers settle for a higher number next to the title name indicating it's a sequel adding 1 more player slot and or ruining the game.

You may still enjoy it & I can't hate you for that but to defend it & it's pricetag & well were gonna have some problems. Btw, I like this argument between all of us, it's going great.

Microsoft also seized the gold medal for unhelpful customer service, taking nearly a month to repair or replace a console, while Nintendo and Sony stuck closer to a week. Only 37.7 percent of Microsoft customers found the company's customer service was "very helpful," compared to 51.1 percent fo Sony and 56.1 percent for Nintendo.

The most shocking number from the survey - and frightening from a consumer perspective - is only 3.8 percent of Xbox 360 owners said they'd never buy another Xbox because of hardware failure."

I dont see a 360 slim anytime soon in the future. The Valhalla chipsets are already slated for this year. A unified CPU and GPU with billed die sizes of 65nm or 45nm. The Xbox 360 is a damn good system, I am glad I bought one. But the problems I have had with it are just a pain. I just wished MS could have taken their time to fix those issues but.... I guess money had its ways through MS.

After my last breakdown, I have taken extra good care of my 360, leaving it near a window (There is a lot a wind out here in Wales), 360 in horizontal position, etc.... Now, my 360 has been going good for the past 5 months or so. *Sigh*...

With the Valhalla chipset on the way I think a slim 360 is likely. Microsoft just recently reduced there SKU's down to two $199 and $299 and I can see them doing it again in the Future, here is how i would like them to go.

i'm really going out on a limb here too so just bare with me but for a slim 360, I say take that Valhalla chipset (smaller, cooler etc) and redesign the HDD so that like the PS3 any 2.5" hdd can be inserted.

Take out the disc drive (DUn dun dun dun dunanananananana) and have every single xbox and xbox360 game past present and future available for download.

Sell this disc drive-less system SKU at $99 and then take the current elite xbox (with disc drive) and mark it down to $199.

I like the design of the existing 360. I'm not keen on the cheap feel plastic and the off-white colour, but the overall design aesthetic is really nice.

I don't think the size is too big at all. The noise the thing makes is horrible though. My 1st 360 was a Day 1 launch model - failed, the next two were before the big updates were made that improved reliability and noise... So basically even though I'm on my 3rd 360 I'm still stuck with a noisey machine, that is a RRoD timebomb :(

Another Sony love fest its embarrassing makes me ashamed to be part of the ps3 crew . only hate you have for the 360 is because the ps3 is lagging behind and you somehow think you will be superior if you own a console that is selling more ! loads of guys at my work own 360's and we have a great community a few own ps3's me included and no doubt a few more will get one now it's cheap. A writer from our web site recently submitted an article to n4g.com called "Dreaming of the PS3 Slim." Two days later this article (Dreaming of the 360 Slim) hit the web.

I called attention to this earlier but the mod who submittted this article deleted my comment. That's probably because he didn't want people to know that TheSixthAxis.com stole the title from our own article, which was posted two days earlier.

I don't agree, X360 looks good and cooler than PS3 in my opinion. But how can you talk about a slim version when MS can't handle the current hardware. The effing failure rate is above 60%. They need total redesign, true, but I doubt its in their power to make it slimmer when it's that hot.
