Telstra's safety cable may prevent a nasty fall

LAST month I wrote that "aggressive re-tooling of its existing (Foxtel) cable" would enable Telstra to cut a future FTTN off at the knees.

On Tuesday Telstra announced it would do exactly that.

Unless the federal government is prepared to pour some tens of billions of dollars into a very big hole, the FTTN is looking like Jose Ferrer in the 1952 version of Moulin Rouge.

For the FTTN -- fibre-to-the-node broadband network -- to now proceed would require the government to provide 100 per cent of the funding. Or so near enough, it wouldn't matter.

There is no way the $4.7 billion promised would be sufficient. There is no way even a Singapore-government backed Optus would be able to come to the party. The government would have to commit for $10 billion going on $20 billion.

That though is only the start. The government would also have to be prepared to risk Telstra suing and winning some tens of billions of dollars compensation for confiscation of its existing copper network.
