And so it begins. Game Pass days are over.

ThinkThink1d 5h ago

How come? Because there's a rumor of adding an additional tier?

Jin_Sakai1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

CoD is just a way of raising the prices and pushing people into paying more for Game Pass. It’s losing its value and the day 1 first party games aren’t really worth it anymore.

purple1011d 4h ago

yes, because people were sold on the promise of one price, activision games included, now they want another whole tier to include cod,

not what people initially brought into, (well gamepass had many subs even before Activision, but you get my point)

So, One more lie, to add to the stack of lies, perpetrated by these scumbags,

jin_sakai probably think this ones the nail in the coffin, id tend to agree

Cacabunga15h ago

Sony better take notes and rethink their future plans.

this really couldn’t get worse..

peppeaccardo2h ago

If you pay attention to the target audience of this so called gaming service it all starts making sense and MS is doing exactly what they r supposed to do to get their money back ... if you really understand the reasoning of the lower side of the spectrum of the cod players MS has found its gold vein ... we r in business territory as entertainment is long deceased on the MS vocabulary.

notachance16h ago(Edited 16h ago)

If they’re as stupid as to make it more than $5/month increase from the highest tier I’d laugh my ass off.

crazyCoconuts11h ago

That would be a way of getting to say they kept the promise of all games on GamePass without cannibalizing their sales

5h ago
Bathyj14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

Making gamepass worse value by making it more expensive, as well as CoD losing Xbox sales and PlayStation gamers will want it less if Xbox gamers are getting it for "free".

Takes real talent to damage 2 things with one move.

Chocoburger11h ago

Call of Duty needs to be taken down a notch, its too popular for its own damn good. So yeah, it seems like MS is going to help make that happen. So good job, I guess?

crazyCoconuts11h ago

If they price it so high that people won't want it, they won't sign up so MS won't lose out on sales. Not all of those bad things will happen, just some of them

PhillyDonJawn8h ago

Really? You think CoD on PS would sell less cause Xbox gamers get access thru gamepass? I doubt that. COD fanbase is huge they're gonna play where they want to play and not care how the next person got it

Notellin13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

I ended my subscription right around when they announced the purchase of Activision/Blizzard.

No offense but I'm not paying a subscription fee to get the worst 3rd party publishers games for free. It's like paying a monthly fee to only eat at Chili's or Applebee's while everyone else is having all the amazing food.

My hope was Gamepass would bring more games like Grounded or Hi-Fi Rush. We have all seen how that's going.

I'll never spend another dollar on an Xbox service ever again after the recent studio closures. I've defended them on here and elsewhere but they don't deserve any trust from any consumer at this point.

PhillyDonJawn8h ago

I understand your feelings but your analogy made no sense lol

S2Killinit12h ago

And soon you will have the option to opt for the Sports package, but if you want sports you also need to pay for the weather package.

As Ive said since this thing was introduced. Prepare to get nickel and dimed.

PhillyDonJawn8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

They do that that'll be the end of them. They're not that crazy. Only way that would work is if you could build a game pass package $5 sports, $5 shooter, $5 rpg, etc. But even then it's bad business for MS cause ppl that only play sports and shooters would get it cheaper compared to an all game bundle and they'd lose money.

InUrFoxHole11h ago

@Jin Sakai
But you're totally fine with paying for psn with no day 1, 1st party...

crazyCoconuts11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

The PSN essential value you get with base online access is unparalleled, puts Xbox core to shame. The PSN extra package however seems to be diminishing in value as it probably should. With any luck we'll have people buying their frickin games again as these sub services lose popularity

PhillyDonJawn8h ago

@Coconut not gonna lie I wanna start buying games again lol. (I do but not day 1 releases) I still feel bad for not buying Ori 2. Had it not release day 1 on GP I would've bought. So if they move day 1 titles to a new tier (which I'm not subbing to) I'd buy the games I really want day 1. While the ones I want to play but not badly I'd wait til it's available on the lower tier to play.

lodossrage7h ago

@InUrFoxHole

oh come on, There was a time Xbox fans were ok with just paying for the right to play online without getting anything for it.

@Jin by Microsoft standards another $10 should do the trick🤦🏿

PhillyDonJawn8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Nah I disagree, the value of GP has been crazy they were screwing themselves for quick subscriber gain. I always felt the day 1 releases would eventually stop and they only did it to get ppl to sub faster. That's why it quickly surpassed PS sub. Now that they hit a ceiling and picked up Activision they can only A. Take away the day 1 releases and hope the sub count remain or B. Increase the cost and hope they keep the sub count. Seem they went with
C. Add a new tier which is likely a mix of A and B.
If the new tier is only Activision games and they leave ultimate alone I'll be happy. I don't play COD so

5h ago
SPEAKxTHExTRUTH5h ago

Did you say that when Sony raised the price of PS+ and didn’t offer anything to justify the increase? I doubt it…

badkolo4h ago

if they add more top tier games , more value and charge more for this tier, cool thats just normal business and an option for its users. how does that affect you or us in any way. there is still a cheap option and so on. and yea over time we did expect it to eventually go up a few bucks. every other company has but now its a problem when ms does it?

gotta make back that money somehow. but its definitely a scummy move before cod comes to gamepass haha.

Tacoboto16h ago

Similar kind of thing happened back when Starfield came out.

The dollar new accounts for a month, trials, various promotions kinda dried up as they finally had a big game coming, following a price hike in July. But reception was eh.

And they haven't delivered on letting us cloud stream our owned library yet either.

crazyCoconuts11h ago

I think you're hitting on the core issue with Starfield. All of this breaks down of they can't make good games. Whether you're leasing or selling to one platform or multiple, the games gotta be good. That's the thing that's absolutely bonkers about this whole thing: making good games has been Microsoft's Achilles heel for many years now

mrcatastropheAF7h ago

Where did they promise allowing you to cloud stream your owned library? Lol anything downloaded to your console you can play remotely anywhere. Don't recall them making that promise.

New tier for gamepass solely due yo call of duty is a garbage move though. They keep shooting themselves in the foot

Tacoboto4h ago

@catastrophe

They said it June 2022

https://news.xbox.com/en-us...

"We’re excited to share that later this year, it’s our intent to roll out the ability for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members to play, from the cloud, select games they already own or have purchased outside the Xbox Game Pass library."

LG_Fox_Brazil1d 3h ago

It doesn't surprise me, it's very clear that MS is trying as hard as possible to recover all the money spent on Activision and Bethesda, they will do whatever they can, doesn't matter if people will like ir or not, as long as the higher ups see money arriving, it's all fair game

Profchaos11h ago

Pretty much Xbox wrote a cheque that Microsoft can't cash.
Inflated metrics egos and a belief that they could get the casual gamer playing hardcore titles via cloud on mobiles really lead them to belive they were in a better position than the reality.

I don't believe gamepass was ever that strong with many gamers likely signing up multiple fake emails for the dollar trials over and over boosting that count along with Xbox live gold hacks and other methods of getting gamepass for next to no money a month have been well known and exploited for years.

Microsoft have a belief that everyone's grandma wants to play halo on a mobile if they could just reach them because they played Wii bowling once so they must want to play halo

XiNatsuDragnel1d 2h ago

Oof this is Microsofts grand plan?

Fishy Fingers1d 2h ago (Edited 1d 2h ago )

While a rumour cant say Id be surprised if true.

Certain other subscription services I sub to have increased in price while adding nothing and we expect theyre potentially offering up the biggest game of every year and its back catalog for "free"?

But I'd happily skip it if there are options (or upgrade for a month for the campaign)

Outside_ofthe_Box1d ago

People expect the price of games to stay the same forever so why wouldn't they expect the same for subscription services?

Crows9013h ago

Price increases are fine. As long as they make sense. Games at 60 was a good price point. Things don't have to go up in price just because.

I used to buy some games at 60...how many do I buy at 70? None. It's a loss for the industry. The higher the price the likelihood sales won't be as high. For $10 more they lost $60.

Same thing with subscriptions. As long as it's affordable people will set it and forget it. If it stops being affordable people will be more picky...so a price increase of $5 could net them a loss of millions.

Outside_ofthe_Box12h ago

Let's be honest, nobody wants prices to increase. I personally have always thought that $40 was the perfect price and never liked it when they increased it to $50 for the PS2 generation and then $60 for the PS3. The $60 price did hold on for a good while though.

Same with sub services. The whole appeal is 'the best deal in gaming' mantra people love to chant, but we all know that they will increase the price eventually especially if they are putting CoD that will actually sell a ton even at that $70 price point.

Microsoft Plans Boldest Games Bet Since Activision Deal, Changing How ‘Call of Duty’ Is Sold

Microsoft MSFT -0.19%decrease; red down pointing triangle plans a major shake-up of its videogame sales strategy by releasing the coming installment of “Call of Duty” to its subscription service instead of the longtime, lucrative approach of only selling it a la carte.

Profchaos1d 9h ago

Until cod gets onto gamepass day 1 it's really just theory that it will hurt the overall sales I guess we will find out.

Zeref1d 9h ago

I think it will hurt physical sales a bit. But CoD makes the most money from microtransactions. I'm sure the amount of people that are gonna play it on gamepass will be offset by the amount of new people buying MTs

Einhander19721d 7h ago

But that increase needs to offset the loss in physical sales. CoD has been a big seller that has retained it's price much better than the average game.

And just like any game with dlc and mtx the majority of players don't buy it, it's the big spenders that really generate revenue, so the idea that by adding it to Game Pass is going to increase spending on mtx will likely not pan out as well as people hope. On top of that Microsoft currently gives away content updates for most of their games so presumably no more selling things like zombie mode.

So far nothing has really gone the way Microsoft envisioned it would, I think this will continue going forward.

romulus231d 6h ago

Those people who would have spent $70 to buy the game would still be the same ones spending more money on MT's so there is no offset, it will be a loss of sales that they would have acquired if the game was not on gamepass..

DarXyde1d 6h ago

But the question then is what do consumer spending habits look like on rented games?

blacktiger1d 2h ago

Man, you're high, 1 billion sales from copies and not mt yet. Gamepass might eat that

badz14923h ago

unlike many other games, CoD recouped the dev cost and made lots of profits off sales alone, year in year out. MT is pure unadulterated profits for them so far. I don't see them giving that up anytime soon

Omegasyde21h ago

I said this years ago (Look at comment history if you have time).

Eventually AAA games will have so much cut content if on subscriptions Day 1, that it might as well as go free to play.
Maps/Modes free (Slow AF release) sell “quarterly “ season passes, sell cosmetics and guns individually.

Problem with this model is users get bored, they move on to the next game.

SimpleDad18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

MTs sell either way... they will loose huge. The whole point is to increase Gamepass numbers and get that investor money. That's the offset.

Sony doing it as well with pushing PSN acc on Steam.
They both want user accounts increase.

It's like YouTube channel. You want subscriber accounts so that you get better ads on your videos. You don't really care about viewership.
Now, YouTube is changing algorithm all the time I know... but that's the idea.
You don't get money from viewers... you get it from ads.

Profchaos12h ago

I never understood being comfortable paying for micro transactions when you don't actually own the game it's like paying for an expansion pack but renting the base game every other week from blockbuster back in the day.

I guess starfield proved people are more.than happy to however given the DLC expansion sold Reall well as it came with a early access promotion

Given Microsoft's new strategy of early access packs for GP games I bet they will continue this for COD but the games DLC get it a week early aka the actual launch Day

It’s rumored there’s going to be new tiers to Gamepass added when COD hits. So most likely the most pricey one will include newer COD titles.

Chevalier1d 7h ago

How much you thinking? $25-30 a month is what Xbox will want for this new tier?

I actually think they pull something like Amazon Prime and you end up with Gamepass and buy a COD pass separately then they bundle both.

purple1011d 6h ago

They will add modern warfare 3

But yeh gulf war, is going to incur a price rise, pretty sure

Sonic188114h ago(Edited 14h ago)

I think they're *forcing* PC gamers to pay the highest tier as well. I'm like WTF? I hope I'm wrong on this

Name Last Name1d 7h ago

It’s a gamble but I think they have to do it. Release COD on GP to see if it grows. Otherwise, GP will definitely not grow.

Sonic188114h ago(Edited 14h ago)

How will gamepass affect the quality of the game though? Yearly releases on gamepass? I felt like the franchise was getting stale to begin with because of the yearly releases and losing it's quality 🤔

1Victor1d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

@prof: “Until cod gets onto gamepass day 1 it's really just theory that it will hurt the overall sales I guess we will find out.”
I wonder what the FTC have to say about that because that was part of the issue in the buyout suit.
If it goes D1 on game pass they’ll have to offer it on PlayStation as well unless the GP owners will have to buy it, ether way Microsoft screwed up badly

1d 7h ago
Lightning771d 7h ago

I think that's why they wanted Sony wanted to sign a deal to have COD on PS. PS will take most of those sales if we're being honest. Being on GP will generate the most players and possibly GP subs. Something Xbox desperately needs.

romulus231d 7h ago

If they bring it to gamepass it will most assuredly be a day one offering as that is their hook for gp. If or when it does it will absolutely hurt overall sales.

gold_drake1d 6h ago

not sure if its a theory, if something is made available for what, 14 money instead of 70?, then people will get it for that price im sure. most of them anyways

crazyCoconuts1d 5h ago

I think if your average player would spend more on the MTs than the game cost, Activision would have gone F2P by now. The Activision CEO went on record saying he though putting COD on GamePass was "value destructive" or something like that. COD is like the only game out there that tons of people pay full price for EVERY YEAR, which is an amazing position to be in. If anyone can mess this gravy train up, it's MS though...

Crows9023h ago

Well it has to sell on Xbox prior to adding it to gamepass for it to affect sales.

Rynxie18h ago

You people think too much into this. It's just a move to get PlayStation users to switch over to Xbox or for them to get gamepass on devices that support it (perhaps even to get ps owners to force Sony to include gamepass on their consoles). It's just a slimey MS move.

OlderGamer1716h ago

Sony will not except Gamepass on Playstation, they are not stupid....

Sonic188115h ago

Will this hurt the quality of the game? We will soon find out🤔

ChasterMies10h ago

CoD on GamePass will hurt physical sales on PC and Xbox. So the question is how will Microsoft get that money back. The answer is microtransactions.

Kaii1d 9h ago

Will this succeed or be a massive trainwreck, place ya bets people ^.^

CrashMania1d 9h ago (Edited 1d 9h ago )

It depends. Even on Xbox CoD still sold millions of copies, this will canabalise a large portion of those sales, potentially hundreds of millions in initial revenue. With the assumption being it'll get more players from GP buying MTs.

But with poor console sales, GP is hitting it's saturation point on console and stagnating, and with PC being very entrenched in steam with gamepass not being that popular there, without a bigger install base it's not really going to increase subs by very much even with CoD. Are people really going to jump ship to monthly to buy xbox's and sub to GP to play CoD especially when it'll probably sell 15+ million on PS5 anyway? I doubt it, but who knows I might be wrong, it'd certainly be a bit concerning if the sub count didn't move even slightly from the biggest FPS on the market being on there, it's a gamble though.

Releasing CoD on GP definitely make the service more attractive, but I question the impact based on what I mentioned above.

shinoff21831d 8h ago

I don't think cod does this. You gotta sell your ps5, buy an Xbox subscribe, etc. I think most that want it on ps5 are just gonna buy it. I don't think it'll move many xboxes.

GamingSinceForever1d 7h ago

GamePass is attractive for single player games that you are in and out of in short fashion. I do not see how it is beneficial for a game that you’d play for years.Better off just buying it outright.

Jingsing1d 7h ago

If it makes more people use Game Pass that hurts everyone else trying to sell games on Xbox. So that is going to look selfish to other developers.

andy851d 5h ago

I just don't see how it's getting more people on GP. COD is the game you buy to keep for a year or more. If someone's getting GP just for COD who doesn't already subscribe. Surely the only draw is COD or they would have GP anyway. It's costing them twice as much as buying the game outright

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 1d 5h ago

Few things:
1. Yes this is a good thing for subscribers as long as...
2. There is a rumor that the price will be going up and if this is true, a lot will be riding on what the upcharge winds up being.
3. A new GP tier may be coming as well. New COD may not be in every tier.
4. GP is still constrained by Xbox console sales. To mitigate this MS has a few options. Brining COD to Switch will definitely help future titles.
5. There is a huge chance that this also comes to PSPlus Premium. I assume this is the case because Microsoft stated that they wanted Sony to add it to Plus. The issue became the lost income Sony would incur in publisher fees. I assume this was the driving force behind the Plus price increase.
6. Doing this will obviously obliterate retail sales, but Microsoft and Sony both come out winning by building up their sub base (and then for MS they will feed off of PlayStation Plus). Sony could have also negotiated for MTX publisher fees.

1d 8h ago
H91d 9h ago

FTC look so stupid right now

Popsicle21h ago(Edited 21h ago)

FTC hasn’t broken a monopoly in 41 years nor did they properly regulate financial institutions prior to the Great Recession. They have been reactionary and less than helpful for quite some time now.

LOGICWINS1d 9h ago

They're damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they don't put COD Day 1, it would mean they were dishonest about Day 1 1st party games on GP. If they DO put COD Day 1 on GP, they'll lose a ton of sales.

I wouldn't want to be in Sarah Bond's shoes right now.

Eonjay1d 8h ago

Losing sales wouldn't matter to them so much if they could build their sub numbers up. I still think they have a deal with Sony to bring it to Plus as well as proposed by Phil Spencer awhile ago.

Sciurus_vulgaris1d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

COD mainly generates money from MTs and season passes.

derek23h ago

@Sciurus and it would have continued to if the game continued to be sold. Now Microsoft throws away revenue with hopes that their console/pc gamepass base that largely refuses to buy will spend on mtx. Microsoft is determined to devalue gaming as a whole.

DOMination-14h ago

...and the 20+ million units it sells every year?

Hofstaderman1d 5h ago

This is the most accurate description of their situation.

Petebloodyonion1d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

I fully expect to see COD released this year on Xbox just to give a win for Xbox owners and in the hope of seeing a substantial increase in Gamepass users.
Actually, I expect COD to be MS's make-or-break game regarding GAMEPASS future for if this game fail to drive membership well nothing will.

As for pricing, I think the base game will be on Gamepass Ultimate but a new tier could see the light of day to include all Battle passes and some free skins.
