Phil Spencer Is Directing Xbox To Be Multi-Platform Partly Due To Gen Z Habits

Phil Spencer is ushering in a new age for the Xbox platform, one that could be appropriately titled ‘The Multi-Platform Age Of Xbox.’ It’s begun with four games coming to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles, and if recent reports are true, there’s many more to come.

Spencer dug a bit into why he’s leading Xbox in this new direction, and how part of this change comes from Gen Z buying habits, and the lack of growth in the console market.

Gen Z's habit not to buy Xbox consoles?

You won the Internet for the day my friend, LOLOLOL

When the first leaks began this year Phil Spencer finally was pushed into announcing the 'Xbox Business Event'! All the hardcore in the Xbox community and the extremist lost their mind about it being the end of Xbox. Then when the video when live Phil Spencer said it will only be 4 games released. Whew! He avoided a bad PR event and everybody thought things were back to normal...

IT TURNS OUT PHIL SPENCER WAS LYING TO MICROSOFT'S MOST LOYAL CUSTOMERS. He just waited a few weeks to soft reveal all in an interview where there wouldn't be video footage of him actually saying the words that Xbox is now a third-party publishing company.

Markets change, things happen and yes Xbox has to 'pivot' if it has to. But this man has done more 360s with the Xbox business model than any other console company; first Xbox is a boxed console, than a subscription service, then a cloud service, then an online store on other platforms! The fact is the Xbox Series S/X combined are selling worse than the Xbox One - how can this be? I strongly think that it's because MS Game Pass taught Xbox owners that they didn't need to spend on third-party games - hence the collapse in the UK market. Look, I get it, I know that we all 'know' Phil Spencer as he's always friendly and giving interviews.

It's now time to ask whether Phil Spencer is the worst thing to ever have happened to Xbox?

Noticing a definite lack of obscure observations on this news, 😂

GamerRN46d ago

Well, as an Xbox supporter....

You're not wrong!

I think he is better off creating an identify for Xbox and pushing harder, but yeah, not happening

_Decadent_Descent45d ago

Just need to make good quality exclusive games, yet that seems to have been the most elusive thing for them to do.

GamerRN45d ago

Yeah the last few definitely have fallen flat. Starfield was a huge disappointment... I liked it but not as much as I expected

itsmebryan45d ago

@ripper
Well console sales didn't keep Sony from losing 26% of its operating income, closing studios, layoffs, etc.....It's not like Sony is doing great with those console sales. Smh

StormSnooper45d ago

That was exactly what I thought, “habits”, as in they don’t want xbox.

BehindTheRows45d ago

Aaaand, you win this discussion! 😀

Lmao

“It’s not our fault Xbox fans, we have no choice, blame yourselves or the young”

I thought he said a while back it was because of AAA budgets being so bloated or something

Crows9046d ago

But we already know good games don't require bloated budgets....it's called government spending/mismanagement of money

Eonjay46d ago

Well as a consumer, the PS5 seems like the better choice if you get Xbox and PlayStation games. I guess Microsoft wins too because the can make more money off their games. And Sony wins because they get their 30%.

Profchaos46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

Apparently sea of theives was a huge successful on PS so I guessed the board has seen dollar signs and that small batch of games will probably Expand

Hereandthere46d ago

He failed miserably and like always will not take the blame.

anast46d ago

Gen Z is buying up PS5s, so he needs to put his games on Sony platforms.

jznrpg46d ago

Everyone is buying PS5’s. Gen. X Y Z

lelo2play1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Square should ask Sony for more money...

gleepot38m ago

Sad but true. It's the consequence of a shift in player habits, massive overhead, and out of control budgets across the industry.

blackblades1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

What did NA and EU did anyways? Just translate or something? I would say it might help them get back to there roots but DK.

Hofstaderman1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Actually, you are correct they play a hand in localization especially in Europe with the many languages. That and marketing.

Xbox No Longer Has Its Head In The Game

Microsoft & Xbox have shut down Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks to lay off more workers, insinuating that they're not in the game anymore.

XiNatsuDragnel2d ago

They're headless for a long time because closing tango isn't exactly a good move

PapaBop1d 8h ago

Ever since that cringe Kinect reveal they've never been the same. They used to make some amazing games and do great deals with third parties Early on in the 360 era they had games like Chromehounds and Shadowrun, both well ahead of their time. Now instead of nurturing their studios, they'd rather gaslight gamers and throw billions on pre existing studios. Not sure how Spencer is still in a job, I wouldn't trust him to organise a piss-up in a brewery.

Father__Merrin1d 8h ago

We've said all along Spencer needs to go. I wish xbox went back to xbox only with new gears fable forza halo releases lots of third party releases

Those early rainbow 6 Vegas days and phantasy star universe are gone forever

S2Killinit1d 5h ago

MS has its head in the game but the game they are playing is something different from what console gamers expect from a platform. MS’s end game has always been to use the xbox as a trojan horse.

XiNatsuDragnel1d 2h ago

Lol that's funny well this plan they have isn't working homie

“Acquisitions always come with cuts”

343 trillion points shield activated
343 trillion percent damage negate activated
All damage reduced to 1 for 343 trillion turns.
MICROSOFT DEFENSE FORCE IS A GO

Tacoboto2d ago

Especially for Microsoft, when Booty pretty much said they didn't know how to handle that many studios.

Why even make the acquisition then.

-Foxtrot2d ago

Didn’t they make the swipe for Bethesda when Sony wanted like 6 months exclusiveness for Starfield

It’s like…chill, you got Rise of the Tomb Raider for a year.

romulus231d 23h ago

Do they always come with senseless cuts becasue that's exactly what cutting Tango was, senseless.

H92d ago

Everyone's acting now that game companies care about games and Xbox is committing the Ultimate betrayal, they are all like this and you have just been quiet about it for far too long

Nuclearmoon2d ago

I wonder if Microsoft do pull out of the console market that it might open the door for valve to relaunch the Steambox. Competition is good for the industry but Microsoft don't even seem to be trying anymore.

UltimateOwnage1d 20h ago

Steam / Valve are one of the few truly pro-consumer bright spots in gaming right now. Thankfully.

Jingsing8h ago

From all the money Valve make from Steam they reinvest almost 0 into creating new AAA titles for the PC platform, Absolutely no giving nothing back in that regard. Wake up.

jwillj2k41d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

“Your game has won some pretty significant awards and is a show piece for where we want to go in the future.”

1 hour later.

“We’re gonna have to let you go. You can’t cover our 100 billion dollar acquisition. Oh and take your awards too 👍🏾”
