Somehow they managed to make the disk version even uglier.

darthv72231d ago

The disc and digital are exactly the same now. Only difference is the disc one comes with the drive and cover while the digital you have to buy the drive w/cover for another $80 if you want to make your own Disc 5.
Disc 5: $500
Digital 5: $450
Optical drive: $80

Lightning77231d ago

They look nice. Even slicker than before. If anyone doesn't have a PS5 this holiday now's the time especially with Spider-Man 2 releasing very soon.

Vits231d ago

What is curious is that they also made the base Digital version more expensive than it was previously. Now it's $450 vs $400 of the original digital one. Given that the Digital PS5 definitely has the potential to generate the most amount of revenue in the long run - they being the sole supplier of games for it - it's a rather odd decision.

darthv72231d ago

@vits... I guess they felt that the price of the combo should be cheaper than buying the parts separately. if they stuck to the same price as now, the digital at $400 and the optical drive at $80 would have been $20 cheaper than the combo. only way to make the combo look more attractive is to raise the price of the digital.

The reason the originals had such a delta was because they both had their own board. So it cost more for the disc board than the digital board. The disc one has the firmware and controller onboard for the optical drive. The digital does not.

Now I understand that they simplified things and put the controller and firmware onto the external drive board. Which means they can churn out just one motherboard for both disc/digital units. It would be cool if this new external drive was also compatible with the existing digital units but we just have to wait for more info on that.

roadkillers231d ago

wtf, $50 more for a digital. Jesus Christ, it is 3 years old.

Vits231d ago

@darthv72

But that is kind of the point. For Sony, the combo should not be the priority, they get more money if you the user are only allowed to get your games by PSN. Therefore the Digital Slim should at the surface level be the better deal to entice users to buy it rather than the Disc version.

And what makes this even weirder is that they could very well had their cake and eaten it too. We have to remember that they are sunsetting the original model, so they were open to a bunch of different price strategies. Included but not limited to just offsetting the extra $50 to the Optical Drive itself.

The only reason that I can think of for them to go with this strategy is if the Digital version lost them too much money. But if that is the case, it's still super weird that they are doing that price increase with the Slim version that historically is cheaper to manufacturer and really the sole reason for Slim consoles to even exist in the first place.

DaCajun230d ago (Edited 230d ago )

You forgot to mention the $30 vertical stand that's not included anymore.

This kind of BS along with the ridiculous PS plus price increase is why I just built a new PC after 20 years. Been with PS since PS1 but I'm done with consoles.

Also since multiplayer games is all cross play now and we are playing with PC cheaters anyway. What's the benefit now. I used to love the closed system without the PC cheaters. All we had was laggers which was never as bad as it is now. Xbox is garbage and now Sony is going full stupid lately. Jim should have left long ago. I guess he's going to take PS down as he leaves.

JackBNimble230d ago

You guy's complaining about $50 must be American, because Sony raised the price everywhere else over a year ago.
The price of the digital edition, at least when I last checked, is $630cnd.

Must be nice to get a console for $450.

Cacabunga230d ago (Edited 230d ago )

I really like the idea of Modular design.. Same base PS5 with add on
it is not for me though I’d prefer a PS5 pro.. and some games taking advantage of it

So this leak was correct all along :
https://n4g.com/news/256273...

and Tom Henderson leaked these even wayy before (September 2022) ...

Obscure_Observer231d ago

"Somehow they managed to make the disk version even uglier."

Yeah... but the digital version looks neat.

Looks like all those PS5 Pro rumors where nothing but steaming load of bullshit.

andy85231d ago (Edited 231d ago )

Those rumours were for next year not this year. That's 100% happening imo

231d ago
Lightning77231d ago

The rumor is 2024 for the Pro.

mkis007231d ago

It actually 100% confirms them. Not a shred of doubt anymore. Playstation portal, slim, disc drive add on , and ps5 pro were all outed by the same leak. Pro is for next year.

Sonic1881230d ago (Edited 230d ago )

"Looks like all those PS5 Pro rumors where nothing but steaming load of bullshit."

You're going to be disappointed then because that's 💯 happening especially from all the reliable sources I've seen

jeromeface230d ago

or a pro is still coming...

DarXyde230d ago

1. What's makes it "uglier"?
2. PS5 Pro is expected next year, not this year. Why would they show it off this year?

Obscure_Observer230d ago

@Sonic1881

"You're going to be disappointed then because that's 💯 happening especially from all the reliable sources I've seen"

You said you have your own "reliable sources" which have you informed on a second Playstation Showcase this year, and so far nothing!

Your "sources" means absolutely nothing to me.

@DarXyde

1. What's makes it "uglier"?

The Blu Ray drive is even more pronounced on this one, which makes looks deformed, weird and out of place in my eyes.

2. PS5 Pro is expected next year, not this year. Why would they show it off this year?

Why Why would they show it off next year? I mean, it´s not like the PS5 has any true nex gen games to show off for it´s base PS5. 2024 looks like a blank page without a single AAA first party next gen game to show gamers why a Pro version is even needed in the first place.

FinalFantasyFanatic230d ago (Edited 230d ago )

That could still happen, Sony given us both a slim line console and a pro console before.

230d ago
DarXyde229d ago

Obscure_Observer,

"The Blu Ray drive is even more pronounced on this one, which makes looks deformed, weird and out of place in my eyes."

That's the issue? That it's not more symmetrical? Ok. That's like me complaining that the newer Series X is called "X Box" but it's a bloody toilet paper roll (or Alexa —I reckon it listens in on you more than an Alexa though). It's such a non-issue for its appearance. The real issue from a design perspective is the fact that the stands are different.

"Why Why would they show it off next year? I mean, it´s not like the PS5 has any true nex gen games to show off for it´s base PS5."

Yeah, you're trolling. Funny thing is I wondered why we even need an Xbox One X for the same reasons.

PS5 games with 10.28TF look equal or better than games running on a 12TF platform, so save it. GT7 is cross gen and STILL looks better than FM8 in many instances. I will also add that PS5 has VR, which, when combined with Pro hardware, pushes the experience that much further. I wouldn't need Pro hardware, but there is clearly meaningful application for it.

"2024 looks like a blank page without a single AAA first party next gen game to show gamers why a Pro version is even needed in the first place."

Remind me, didn't Xbox literally just get their first "AAA" game for this generation THIS YEAR? The best part, I can't think of a single first party game they launched this year that wasn't originally intended for PlayStation too, but Microsoft using their corporate imperialist powers purchased them. All games we know also had PlayStation versions in the works (HFR is not known definitively, but realistically, we know).

I get the sense that you're worried about a 5 Pro being more powerful than the Series X knowing there's (allegedly) no new X models coming.

Well, at least the PS5 including theses have a design, it's not like they just decided to build a black Lego block and call it a day. Plus they will sell like crazy these holidays;)

Andrew336231d ago

Didn't take long to bring xbox into this somehow.

Chevalier230d ago

Yeah a block lego and a cylindrical one appearing like a garbage 🗑

FinalFantasyFanatic230d ago

To be fair, there's only so many ways you can design a box.

I expect a teardown on this like they did the original. Id like to know how they fixed the 825gb limitation in order to use 1tb now. Hopefully they didnt just remove the surface mount SSD and just go with the M.2 expansion instead. I know SSD are faster now and cheaper than their custom solution. They wouldnt give up on that... they put so much effort into it.

SoloGamer1231d ago

who cares how it looks.. as long as the games are dope....😏

Limitedtimestruggle230d ago

They really did made the disc version look worse, but who cares. It already looks shit..but it plays good games.

BillyCrystals230d ago

Ugly or not, the PS2 and PS5 are the coolest looking PlayStations to me.

Rgbsquad230d ago

I gotta a feeling a lot of people took this VERY personaly lol.

ravens52230d ago (Edited 230d ago )

Lol I wonder what people saying "50 extra for digital!" are going to feel when the new series X with no disc drive aka digital only comes out for $500 after 4 years lmfao.

Barlos230d ago

I dunno. I'm not a fan of the look of the OG PS5 but there's no denying it does look unique. I think this newer version, while still not very pretty, does at least look a bit slicker.

I'll nab a digital one. I like that they upped the SSD size and have an add-on bluray. Looks like you no longer need the stand, which explains why its separate. I see a kick stand in one shot with the optical drive attached.

IMissJimRyan231d ago

I'm so happy Sony was able to reduce production costs and increase retail price on hardware, subscriptions and software. Next fiscal year I'll shove the financial results in Xbox and Nintendo fanboys. They won't have a chance.

231d ago
IMissJimRyan231d ago (Edited 231d ago )

@TQQ

Exactly! And all that combined with the prices increasing is going to make results going through the roof! Imagine: hardware cheaper to make and more expensive to buy, subscriptions with an increase of 33% and software with US$10 more in the price. Wow! Sony assets will skyrocket! I'm so happy to be part of the team achieving those results. I've upgraded my Plus from essential to premium to give results a boost.

fr0sty230d ago

I guess the dust Sony kicks up when they fly by has a salty taste to it, based on some of these comments.

goldwyncq230d ago

How much are you getting paid by Sony to do this again?

This new digital one costs 50 bucks more than the old one. You should buy the old one while you still can.

darthv72231d ago

...but then I wont be able to add an optical drive later on when i want to.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro231d ago

Buy an old disc model for 400 bucks or less. Buying the new digital model for more and then an additional disc drive doesn't make any sense.

darthv72231d ago

Oh i know... I collect variants. It's my thing.

I wish the Series S had an attachable drive.

I’m impressed by the look of these. Well done Sony.

Tacoboto231d ago

$50 difference with it bundled, $80 standalone.

I was thinking it would be no cheaper than a $100 difference. I really like the look of it too - I'm impressed.

Xbox Series X All Digital is DOA if they don't release a USB C drive

Hofstaderman231d ago

I agree with you. MS would be stupid not change their digital only mid gen refresh after this.

dumahim231d ago

And soon the series X won't have one either.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro231d ago

They really couldn’t be assed to include a vertical stand in the box huh

AND they increased the price for digital? bro what

mkis007231d ago

With physical games being possible with this model, there is no guarantee it will make as much money on digital purchased like the previous digital did. They sold the ps5 for much lower than a disc drive would cost because they knew they made a lot more on digital purchases.

ModsDoBetter231d ago

They don't really have any competition yet and probably won't until Microsoft start offering new COD releases on GamePass.

(No matter what way people may try and spin it here, COD is one of, if not, consistently the biggest selling game ever year and most gamers aren't on sites like this, they're more casual: COD, Fifa, Madden and call it a day)

As a result they're becoming a little more anti-consumer because they don't really have anything to worry about.

What are you going to do? Complain so hard about the $50 hike and buy an xbox? Nah, consumers would just buy the PS.

purple101230d ago

its 1tb hard drive now, not 825gb

but shitty about the stand yeh.

neutralgamer1992231d ago

I don’t think so. These consoles barely have been tapped into so why update it. By updating specs it would most likely cost more when it’s just now that chip and supply shortages have been dealt with

Outside_ofthe_Box231d ago

I agree, but rumors of a Pro model were consistent despite no need for it.

Christopher231d ago

***I agree, but rumors of a Pro model were consistent despite no need for it. ***

About as consistent as the Switch Pro rumors over the last 3 years.

RaidenBlack231d ago (Edited 231d ago )

only "slim-ish" model for now
30% less volume and ~20% lighter
but Pro model is in-development, codenamed ‘Trinity’, and is targeting a November 2024 release date(as per tom henderson, who also leaked the above "slim" models in September last year) :

https://twitter.com/_Tom_He...
https://keytogaming.com/202...

MTRNYC231d ago

That's a significant reduction, almost certainly larger reduction than the PS4 Slim.

Especially when you compare that to the original PS5, which your comparison isn't against.

blackblades230d ago

Wait for next year, any way I was doubtful on every thing cause everything was just rumors. Still there were 2 rumors, that it exist but also that it might have been cancel but who knows. Going by recent offical announcements in leading to it being legit

goldwyncq230d ago

Next year. The guy who leaked the slim version last year said that a Pro will be out by Holiday 2024.
