Microsoft May Exit Gaming Business If GP Subscribers off Console Don't Increase Enough by 2027

Microsoft's Phil Spencer said in testimony that the company may exit its gaming business if Game Pass subscribers off consoles don't increase a lot by fiscal year 2027.

I didn't mean that in a literal sense Palitera. Business is business and it doesn't matter how much they have in the bank. They're in this more than 2 decades now, spanning 4 generations and have only had relative success with one console, the 360, which was partly due to the PS3 release being delayed multiple times. They've finished last every time so someone's going to pull the plug eventually. Snapping up all these publishers and developers is a desperate last move in trying to stay in the game. They'd be better off going 3rd party at this rate, unless Series consoles literally start flying off shelves.

I don't agree with your first sentences at all, although the last one is on point. . I have a PC and PS5, been a playstation gamer since PS1. I don't want MS to get out because competition is good for both companies... but the tactic of buying up the industry itself is an anticompetitive tactic.
What will happen to the majority of the studios if MS does leave? How many can sell off and which studios will have to be closed down.

Unfortunately for gamers and competition MS sees an industry it can just buy and lock away behind GamePass, I'm hoping this fails.
The problem is MS has never shown any interest in it's own platform, they like the money that comes from gaming but don't want to contribute. A company the size of MS has very little care for doing well in this industry because just doing well doesn't bring the returns for company of that size, they need to dominate in order to raise MS stock price.

Well GP only cost MS money and brings little in return.
I guess it does prevent *some* people from jumping to PS. But it doesn't really attract PS people to Xbox either.
That's the main problem.
I'm pretty sure at least 80% of GP's current subscribers already owned an Xbox before.
Gamepass' business model was flawed from the very beginning because costs don't decrease when the subscriber base increases. It's the opposite.
And it kills your game sales, especially if your games releases day on on GP.
The only way GP can be profitable is for GaaS because they generate revenue over time. But for games that rely on day one sales, GP is a negative thing.

I love Sega but they don't have the money to risk on that any more. I would like to live in an alternate timeline where Dreamcast was such a big success that it had a 10+ year lifecycle and came up about even in unit sales against the PS2. The entire Shenmue saga was completed on that console as planned and more consoles followed. Microsoft never got into the console business and instead focused on Windows gaming and making the Microsoft Store not suck. Since Microsoft never bought Rare in this timeline, those guys still make stuff like Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, Kameo and DKC for Nintendo systems, and release more than 1 game each decade.

Well, I for one am not renewing Gamepass. I gave Xbox 3 years of patience with Gamepass having ultimate and they didn’t deliver anything that I already didn’t own and failed to live up to their promises.

Regardless what anyone says Gamepass and PS essentials are completely comparable with marginal differences in catalog. Both rotate the same games for timing (trek to yomi, stray, the ascent, the medium, tunic etc.) but the key difference is one is cheaper then the other.

I will simply keep Ps plus essentials, humble bundle (grandfathered in with old pricing and selection), and switch online. And I will simply buy whatever game that’s exclusive to Xbox if they ever have an exclusive again.

Why the new xbox's launched with no wifi 6 is beyond me. The 5ghz wifi on X caps at 200mbps. That was a bad call. The ps5 wifi 6 is crazy fast and can reach much higher speeds. I use wired mainly, but when i tested, damn sometimes my wifi6 speed was faster then wired.

Hopefully that will happen 🙏 lets face it Xbox failed years ago. Its just Microsofts bottomless pockets & the deluded fanboys that keep it a float. It certainly isn't the exclusive quality content they churn out year in year out is it. They just rely on 3rd party support or try and buy everything in sight lol.

I'm happy with just nintendo and sony. Microsoft can go the Sega route and release on all platforms. I hate console exclusive games tbh, I'm slowly transitioning more to pc now that handheld pcs are catching on.
