Starfield Review - IGN

It’s never a great sign when someone recommends a game on the grounds that it gets good after more than a dozen hours, but that’s very much the kind of game Starfield is, and I do recommend it. There are a lot of forces working against it, and the combination of disjointed space travel, nonexistent maps, aggravating inventory management, and a slow rollout of essential abilities very nearly did it in. It was the joys piloting a custom spaceship into and out of all sorts of morally ambiguous situations in a rich sci-fi universe that eventually pulled it out of a nosedive. I’m glad that I powered through the early hours, because its interstellar mystery story pays off and, once the ball got rolling, combat on foot and in space gradually became good enough that its momentum carried me into New Game+ after I’d finished the main story after around 60 hours.

80s range is a pretty solid game. The sense I get from the reviews is that it's a great game with shortcomings. That's fair enough.

Really, well done on a solid game, Bethesda. Debatable whether this is their best title, but it will certainly be considered their most ambitious of their current games.

you right now that I enjoyed RE4 Remake more than Zelda but we know which will win in the end.

It all boils down to what it is you like and not what everyone else thinks.

I personally wound up not really liking FF16. The cutscenes were way to frequent, the side quests were pointless, and the bosses took way too many hits to kill. However it will be up for GOTY. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Looking at the gameplay people are showing it genuinely looks like a 7.5. Graphics are last gen, facial animations still terrible, loading screens everywhere, no map, most of the promised features don't exist e.g. space flight, you can't really fly anywhere, and if you do fly to another planet you clip through it because it's just a picture not an actual planet, you need to use the menu to load into a planet to actually go there. Pretty smooth framerate, but dips to 15(!!!) fps at times, and renders as low as 400p on the Series S. Crazy stuff. This has a similar score to Returnal, which many people panned as just ok, but Returnal ran at 1080p upscaled to 4K and at 60fps. It's basically Xbox's Returnal, a game I liked, but pretty disappointing when it was "25 years in the making" and cost $7.5b to get exclusive.

Bethesda games always had their problems, but in the past, their games were ahead in some technical aspects. That is not the case anymore, other developers do the same/similar things but with higher quality. I feel that Bethesda is stuck in time, perhaps due to their old engine.

Overall review scores landed pretty much where I expected them to. It seems that the ign review makes a lot of fair criticisms though, most notably for me personally that the transitions between space and planets aren't seamless. I give up on the gaming community...I have been playing games heavily since the 80's and I just can't anymore...
We get a game that is long, and has tons of narrative to work through that takes a long time to play and people complaint about it. 10 years ago EVERYBODY was complaining about how short games were becoming.

I’m a little taken back by how mixed the reviews are. I’m personally looking forwards to it however. It seems a common negative is the unexpected clunkiness of exploration through a distinctly unseamless world. Lots of menus and loads screens between the gameplay and travel sequences. I suppose we won’t know how well we’ll each individually take to it until we try it for ourselves. I’m hopeful I won’t find it all to intrusive and will still enjoy the game, I’m trying to manage my expectations.
