If it's "all lies" then why is the FTC getting embarrassed and destroyed this past week. Not just by MS but by the judge itself?

If they were lying about everything wouldn't the judge call out MS in all fronts?

I'm trying to make sense out of your statement.

Jin_Sakai347d ago (Edited 347d ago )

“If it's "all lies" then why is the FTC getting embarrassed and destroyed this past week. Not just by MS but by the judge itself?”

You mean how the Judge’s son works for Microsoft and they are worried about her being bias against the acquisition.

People on here keep making out the FTC are being slaughtered…like super bad but a quick look around it’s not as bad as they make out

MS have also made themselves look pretty f****** stupid if we play that card.

A conflict of interest in that case is highly illegal and they would throw Judge Corely out.

Don't think Sony gamers have thought this through... just have to say, Be Careful What you Wish For.

If I was Sony gamer, would be praying for Microsoft to purchase Activision. COD will continue being mutiplat and Playstation gamers wouldn't loose much. Microsoft wouldn't be aloud to purchase any more big studio/publishers.

If Microsoft don't purchase Activision, they will go after other developers that Sony gamers actually might care about. Developers that can be turned in to making exclusive Xbox/PC games like Bethesda. By then, the CMA and FTC won't have the COD excuse to refuse the purchase.

I'll say it again... Be Careful What you Wish For.

Crows90346d ago

A bad thing happening isnt somehow good because other bad things may happen otherwise down the line.
Thats an inconsistent position.

MS shouldnt be allowed to continue buying up developers at the rate they have been. You may be right but if the deal is allowed there really is no reason to not allow smaller deals...and quite frankly almost any other developer is a much much smaller deal in comparison.

DarXyde346d ago

For me personally, that would involve the purchase of Square, Kadokawa, or Sega. I don't see that happening though. By then, you have to go through Japanese regulators, and I don't think they would be as receptive to that acquisition as they were to ABK. Besides, Sony and Tencent own two-thirds of FromSoft, so really, what can they do there? Given that Japanese titles are Xbox's biggest weakness (at least from what I see) and they haven't bought one of the major publishers, perhaps it is because they can't? Identity is a big thing in Japan and I do not foresee them forgoing that. Would they be open to Japanese acquisitions? Square, maybe. I don't think so for Sega.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

If anything, I would say they're eyeing up WB. There were talks of that a while ago that never materialized anything. Just might, though.

ApocalypseShadow346d ago (Edited 346d ago )

Sorry. I wouldn't be praying for them to get Activision just so they can monopolize the industry. Think again. Don't think you've thought things through.

And, Microsoft would have to be careful of what they wish for in buying favorite franchises and companies that are favorites on PlayStation and make more money on PlayStation. Leading to a boycott of their systems and services worldwide in gaming. Something I know they don't want. They think they are worse off now. PlayStation gamers worldwide boycotting them would either force them to keep products on PlayStation or see their numbers get worse.

Casuals don't care about Microsoft. If they did, they would still be playing Xbox and waving their hands with Kinect on Xbox instead of their phones and tablets. The core gamers are the ones who actually buy multiple games and support multiple developers. Without the core audience, those franchises would drop like a bad habit.

So I say again, Microsoft had better be careful who they go after in trying to take away games from the majority. It won't be pretty.

outsider1624346d ago

"If Microsoft don't purchase Activision, they will go after other developers that Sony gamers actually might care about."

This right here proves MS is shitty and pathetic. They already bought bethesda ( a multi platform publisher). And now if they dont have activision they'll go after other publishers? All that money and they can't concentrate on their own studios?

What i wish for is Sony to concentrate/continue on making quality exclusives. Had enough of this drama. The faster this ends the better.

RauLeCreuset346d ago

It's a valid concern, one that you're trying to leverage to get Sony gamers to cheer for the deal, but what's to stop MS from doing another acquisition under that same logic after acquiring ABK?

The problem is the general permissiveness many of the regulatory systems have for allowing wealth to circumvent and harm actual competition. That critique includes the CMA, which has blocked the deal, and the FTC, which is trying to block it.

The attitudes of the regulatory systems in evaluating effects on a market have been to ignore the acquisition of all of the other ABK multiplats to debate whether COD is big enough to change MS' position in the market. When that is the determining factor, why should Sony gamers hope the deal goes through?

What's to stop MS from acquiring more big multiplat studios or publishers, none of which are going to have a single franchise as big as COD, and applying that same test (Is (insert franchise) big enough to put Xbox ahead of Sony?) to justify acquisition? Are Sonic, Persona, Virtua Fighter, or Like A Dragon going to pass that test if COD can't?

Not all unfair practices result in a monopoly. They're still unfair business practices. The word "monopoly" is not in the FTC's mission statement. It does mention protecting the public from unfair business practices and unfair methods of competition.

It's simple. The richest kid on the block should not be able to gobble up titles popular on other platforms to lure away gamers they failed to properly compete for over the two decades they have been in the market. Look at all the games under ABK other than COD. Phil said it himself. Xbox failed when it mattered most, and consumers made their choice. The attitudes of regulatory systems are entirely too permissive of rewarding that failure and punishing consumers by entertaining the idea that MS should be able to take hostage titles popular elsewhere to force consumers into their ecosystem.

PapaBop345d ago

So if Microsoft buys Activision then there is no worries because they'll still be making multiplatform games but if Microsoft buys another developer then Sony fans should be worried as they might make those games exclusive? There is a huge gaping flaw in that logic which I can only guess that you're gullible enough to take anything MS says at face value.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 345d ago
DarXyde346d ago

Um...maybe. Hood's statement is a bit open to interpretation:

"The possibility of making Call of Duty exclusive to Xbox was never assessed or discussed with me, nor was it even mentioned in any of the presentations to or discussions with the Board of Directors."

You have to be careful with interpreting this statement, it's a bit loaded. The first part of that statement "was never assessed or discussed with me" can mean three things: (a) the plain face reading that neither occurred, (b) it was never assessed, or (c) it *was* discussed with her. Either you take them together, or individually which would indicate one of them is true. The second part "nor was it even mentioned[...]" is pretty straightforward. I suppose it's also possible to lie about it because it's not really practical to prove a negative here unless they have documented every communication in copious detail. But there's also a simpler reading of this: Xbox exclusivity. Of course this won't be Xbox exclusive because PC exists, as do Nintendo platforms. I think this is actually the most accurate interpretation: talks of Xbox exclusivity never occurred. The real question is "did MS have any discussions of which platforms would be omitted?"

Onto the second part of that quote:

"I understood the necessity of keeping Call of Duty on other platforms. The acquisition’s strategic rationale and financial valuation are both aligned toward making Activision games more widely available, not less."

This is interesting. I'm willing to give this a good faith interpretation in that, yes, they stand to earn back a lot of their acquisition spending faster if they keep things open and expand upon that by including Nintendo and streaming to mobile devices. I think that's a fair statement.

....but if I approached this as a skeptical person, I'm really iffy on her saying she "understood the necessity of keeping Call of Duty on other platforms." Objectively, "understood" is the past tense of "understand", so is it reasonable to suggest that she no longer holds this understanding? Additionally, making these games more widely available is open to interpretation. There are more Switches out there than PS4s and PS5s, so technically, opening access to Switch and restricting access to PlayStation would be a net expansion, no? Even just to mobile phones, that's damn near universal access, and, therefore, also a net expansion.

I don't like the idea of being so cynical and paranoid, but Microsoft is very good at veiled messaging. Spencer notes he'd like to keep those games on PlayStation if Sony allows it, but what does that mean? Will there be the requirement to allow Microsoft's subscription services on PlayStation? Is it only going to be available through streaming? That they are willing to put these games on PlayStation with important, deal-breaking caveats? I feel like there are important questions that aren't receiving their due follow-ups. If they can answer those questions unequivocally, I think we can have a much clearer understanding of what they mean.

Given that Microsoft wasn't willing to cleave off Call of Duty and instead opting for decade deals, they must be under the impression that having it is essential to their strategy. As a bargaining chip, perhaps. Very lucrative franchise, after all.

I don't really know what they plan to do, but we'll find out if the merger is successful. I would personally rather it failed spectacularly, but let's see what comes of it. Then, we will assess what Microsoft will do.

COD would make MS more money being multiplat then it ever would as an xbox exclusive.

Its cute to think this is some chest beating contest. Its about revenue.

MrDead347d ago

"COD would make MS more money being multiplat then it ever would as an xbox exclusive." really!!

So if it's only about revenue when can we expect Bethesda games to be released on Bethesda's biggest revenue generator in the console market?

Fishy Fingers347d ago (Edited 347d ago )

If that bethesda game was releasing annually and year on year the biggest seller across every platform probably, yeah.

Its a 10x purchase over zenimax, you think even MS (a public traded company with shareholders not fanboys) can justify $70b and owning the biggest cash cow in gaming only to cut its return in half to sell some more xboxs? Naive mate. Take 40% of Sonys COD revenue, year in, year out.

MrDead346d ago (Edited 346d ago )

You think MS when it has total control of a huge percentage of the biggest IP's and publisher's in gaming are going to allow others to play? Giant companies like MS do this all the time, take the initial loss and make the industry uncompetitive for competition. Naive mate to take a tax dodging mega corp at its word... especially when you look at every other industry this has happened to.

giovonni346d ago

MrDead as soon as we can expect Final fantasy seven to go Multiplatform too or Street Fighter V to drop multiplat… I mean those games are love and adored by all fan bases. But, I’m sure you’ll find away to move the goal post on those. look it’s very simple, when a Bethesda game releases year over year and makes the same amount as COD expect to see it on PlayStation. Games such as elder scrolls which release every few years can and should be exclusive to who ever owns them. You want to play it so bad, and you’re a gamer get an Xbox, or get a PC. The only thing preventing you from playing these games is just you and this fanboy loyalty you have.

MrDead346d ago

Poor giov, confusing single games to entire multiplatform publishers and then talks about moving goal posts. Its amazing the swill you fanboys gulp down to defend MS activity hurting the industry he cares about... giovonni346d ago (Edited 346d ago )

Shinoff2183 so, that’s not MS strategy. It’s crazy how the Sony Pony Phony’s consensus is for MS to compete, but it has to be based upon their reasoning, their “moral compass” and should still benefit them. Profits should only be maximized when they say so. “ oh COD sells more on PlayStation therefore it should stay on PlayStation forever. Sorry business doesn’t work like that either adapt or move on to something else.

Outside_ofthe_Box347d ago

"Its cute to think this is some chest beating contest. Its about revenue."

"We can out spend Sony out of business"
- Microsoft

This is definitely a "chest beating contest". Cute indeed.

-Foxtrot347d ago (Edited 347d ago )

@FishyFingers

It doesn't matter when it was said

If you make a suggestion about doing something, then do things that comes across like you are acting on that (buying two massive publishers for billions) then it’s safe to say you are putting that idea into action

That’s what this is

If the FTC and the CMA weren’t on their case and this was approved ages ago they’d probably be eying up another publisher right now for 2024 or 2025. This whole court case has probably put a pin in it because they know they wouldn’t be able to get another publisher approved with all this heat over Activision.

That last article where everyone is having a baby over a showcase is ridiculous because the Xbox showcase was really a multiplat showcase...

MrBaskerville1d 18h ago (Edited 1d 18h ago )

@Eonjay

I think people are just happy that they gave us something to be excited about. It being multiplatform stuff makes it even easier to rejoice as everyone gets to enjoy it. This show was really what Summerfest should have been, just with less of an xbox focus obviously.

These shows are fun to watch because we get to be excited about new games.

With that said, I imagine Perfect Dark, South of Midnight and perhaps state of decay 1-3 would be possible candidates for ps5. Doom might also be a given. They didn't really try to hammer home its exclusivity.

Eonjay1d 18h ago

I won't be buying any Xbox games anyway, Not going to subsidize their vision of changing gaming industry into streaming everything via a netflix subscription and they are the only choice. Remember when it comes to Microsoft "It's us or no one" You can't complain after they have taken over either.

Einhander19721d 9h ago

He will be missed, if he wasn't going to be missed Microsoft wouldn't be putting the games on PlayStation.

Make up your mind xbox guys, do you want to brag about Sea of Thieves success on PlayStation or do you want to cry about all your games going to PlayStation?

neomahi1d 20h ago

So, the benefit of having an Xbox is the option of a subscription service that's more like a buffet and not a deluxe plate. By staying loyal to Xbox means day 1 "free" games of your choice. Xbox is a service.

If rumors are true Xbox is going the 3DO route, Xbox is basically a PC. I mean, since PlayStation caved and started using off the shelf parts to "make it easier on developers", which is a croc as were how far into this console generation and the only devs to really support PS5, kind of, is Insomniac, San Diego, and Santa Monica and we've seen nothing from other devs. PS4 was supposed to be easier so PS5 would be even easier, right? But what've we really seen from Sony first party when it comes to PS5 games? Nothing, they're all still possible on PS4. Xbox? Same thing. Hi-Fi Rush was possible on at least Xbox One X (another lie from Xbox with No one gets left behind). Wow

MrBaskerville1d 18h ago

The original comment still stands, as long as they withold one or two series of games on xbox. Most could come but that still wouldn't mean that you could expect every game to arrive.

I suspect they want people to speculate, because then you don't know whether you should wait for a ps5 port or buy an xbox. Every game is Schroedingers exclusive.

Eonjay1d 17h ago

The interpretation of his first comment is not to expect more than these 4 games. The interpretation of the second comment is not to expect any game to be exclusive to Xbox.

His communication is all over the place. The fact that we can't decipher what he means is what people are complaing about. He should simply say, games are coming to PlayStation but we don't have a set policy that applies to all titles. Sometimes less is more.

Crows901d 17h ago

Well seeing as most Xbox games aren't worth it then it's probably fine

ChasterMies1d 14h ago

neomahi1d 20h ago

But, Lego Horizon is on the Switch. Why is Nintendo the only comfortable one here. They're not even on PC

Extermin8or3_1d 19h ago

Stupid take. The Lego game has been made by a Lego studio with advice on the IP from guerilla games. So part of the negotiations/requirements to make it happen will clearly have been done kind of multiplatform release.

LucasRuinedChildhood1d 15h ago (Edited 1d 15h ago )

That Lego game definitely exists to get kids to want to buy the proper Horizon games on PS5/PS4 (plus the multiplayer game). It's basically a giant advertisement. And kids love the Switch.

gold_drake1d 13h ago

nintendo is comfortable because their first party games sell in the tens of millions.

Extermin8or3_1d 19h ago

italiangamer1d 18h ago

Sony gives them the PS5's development kit so they know exactly which studios are making games for their consoles, or at least they can make an estimate based on the number of kits requested.

Microsoft after buying various companies including acrtivison made 212 billion for 2023

Sony has not made any big purchases were Microsoft continues to do so in the ai space and gaming space even in the military.

So yes microsoft could easily buy sony and not bat a eye.

It seems the idea is to have other platforms(PS and PC) offset the cost of game pass.

Xbox users get the games on game pass while others pay full price.

Gamepass seems to be Xbox's idea of "exclusive".

These guys are so inconsistent with their messaging. It's difficult to know exactly what they want to do with their games. I've stopped caring. I just focus on the games.

Hofstaderman1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

This. When I saw day one on gamepass for every game I asked myself how will they make money? Answer: release on PS5 and get your sales from there and if lucky leople will sub on PC and XBOX. To ensure consistent subscriptions, space out the games. Either way MS has well and truly effed itself and Phil is a snake standing there pretending they all exclusives.

Mark Cerny: When making consoles, we're not trying to build low-cost PCs

Well... they used to design their own chips. Emotion Engine, Cell, RSX... when they switched to using X86 based chips is now more akin to low-mid cost PCs than before. It may not look like a PC but it pretty much is one. I'd bet it could do productivity stuff just fine if they allowed it to.

Cockney4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I think series consoles are closer to pc than playstation seeing as they used the full suite of rdna 2 functions, didn't Sony strip a lot of that away to streamline their machine to be games focused? Its probably lacking in the office and productivity department, don't ask me what their custom chip does or doesn't do I just remember reading a lot about at the time, "rdna 1.5" was the call and yet what we see is pretty much level pegging as far as games go

GamerRN4d ago

Actually, stripping that away doesn't streamline, it hinders. Those features are actually helpful for gaming.

And they didn't strip them out, they just didn't work closely enough to be able to use them all since specs weren't finalized. Microsoft took an inside line on that one.

The reason why things are equal is because Xbox rarely has games designed on their box, they are usually designed on PS5 and ported over. So Xbox loses the power edge it has to making up the poor optimization.

It's ok, I think the lesson is you have to have a significant increase in power of 30 percent or more to be noticeable. And you have to sell enough to become the lead console for development otherwise you lose that power.

Einhander19724d ago

@GamerRN

PS5 outperforms series x because it uses custom chips to process things that on xbox need to be done by the GPU/CPU.

Things like Tempest Audio, and it's custom compression chip for SSD as well as having a separate chip for upscaling using checkerboard and presumably FSR runs off it as well.

O please stop the myth that the seriesX mythe is the only console that is using the "the full suite or Rdna2" is already debunked al long time ago.

Number1TailzFan4d ago

The consoles use video ram as system ram as well since it's all shared, so nah.

You should probably read the whole quote and not just go based on the title.

darthv724d ago

I have read it... I dont think anyone can build a PC that equates to the performance of a PS5/Series X for anywhere close to their selling point. Not for a while at least.

And my comment about them switching from custom chips to more PC related just adds to that fact. whether people want to believe it or not... Sony has built a low cost (not spec, there is a difference) PC.

We need better games on these consoles. This generation has been such a huge letdown so far. Moving forward these current consoles will be supported even when newer Playstation and Xbox are in the market. AAA games have been so expensive to make and it seems fun is taken out of games and loot boxes take their place. Try playing a NBA 2k game it's like a casino with slot machines

just_looken3d ago

The cost of making these games is a scam

Nba 2k19 to 2k14 its like madden the budget to make went stupid high but the fundamental of the game and the game modes never changed.

Anything now even basic intersection construction is tens of millions but pre coivid few hundred grand.

2018 here is $400 landscaping now here is the pink slip to my car.

I swear the cost of everything is the same but there taking of that huge profit top for there own pockets.

Einhander19724d ago

The PS5 is incredibly customized.

The SSD, the Tempest Audio, the APU itself is a mix of cross generation AMD hardware in order to be more optimized for gaming and cost efficient.

The PS5 Pro also has features from cross generation AMD hardware with RT features from RDNA 4 plus it's own custom upscaler PSSR.

PlayStation 5 Pro features next-gen RDNA 4-based ray tracing engine, allows 2-3x faster RT
https://www.tweaktown.com/n...

PlayStation still uses custom designed hardware.

darthv724d ago

honestly... I dont know why some are taking offense to it being called a low cost PC. It really is... and low cost is a good thing. the article did not say low performance PC... that is totally different.

Einhander19724d ago

I'm saying they still are designing their own chips, they just use AMD templates.

The PS5 APU has features from RDNA 1 2 and 3, and the PS5 Pro adds features from RDNA 4, and the CPU is the same with it own customized features.

Then all of that is paired with other custom chips.

just_looken3d ago

What you all said my rig in my bedroom can do it no issues

That plastic box has a 2020 cpu with the pro using a 2021 6700

The custom is do to them being dirt cheap with a 2 prong power supply so they made a cpu/gpu combo chip aka apu.

Get a amd laptop with there new mobile chips get the same performance.

VincentVanBro4d ago

You’re right but downvoted for some reason.

Its this site even the head admin banned me for awhile being but hurt over my "anti" sony comments.

n4g is pro sony nothing sony will ever do can change that.

Pyrofire954d ago (Edited 4d ago )

When you only look at the big flagship chips that seems true, but there's a lot going on in a modern console that takes advantage of being a dedicated kit. The various elements put into how the pipelines are connected shape the direction of games. End to end decryption and data streaming is something big that PC can only kind of do and with less certainty for example. Dedicated audio chip that rivals the main CPU in the PS4 is a big paradigm shift, devs used to fight for cores and audio was often last priority, whereas in traditional PC design the main CPU does both of those jobs of processing audio and decryption, while also performing all the other CPU based tasks.
It's not the custom silicon that used to be what made consoles but there's a lot more to consoles now. Data storage was not even a consideration and almost no RAM was on old consoles. Now there needs to be an enormous amount of SSD storage, and RAM to make these games tick with how much is demanded from them.

@darth

Your comment show how many sony blindboys are on here

You are 100% correct but to add on the gamecube-ps3 also had a gpu/cpu combo back in the day unlike modern consoles that are just glorified tablets using apu/igpu's.

I miss the ps3 era start of ps4 era that sony was awesome

Yah, hence the majority of the PS5’s hardware investment going towards an SSD instead of a GPU.

There are countless custom pc gaming rigs out there, and I bet none of them took an SSD-centric approach to their design, like the ps5 did.

just_looken3d ago

LMAO wow sony blind boy's are mad in love

That is called direct storage windows 10 has had that for over 5 year's every computer with a nvme based ssd has had that tech for years.

https://www.thewindowsclub....

The ps6 will then have this new amazing tech you all will go crazy over resize bar
https://www.howtogeek.com/8...

But that tech has been out for 2 years all 40series gpu's intel gpus and the new amd cards have that tech.

There is nothing a ps5 can do over a 4+ year old computer 2019 rig want resize bar? get a cheap amd/intel card for half the cost of a ps5.

MIDGETonSTILTS173d ago

Clearly you did not watch Cerny’s first ps5 breakdown, so you don’t appreciate EVERYthing Cerny did to leverage their extremely fast SSD.

bigfish4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I can see where he’s coming from re ps5 not just being a box with parts like a pc. They must also spend an awful lot on r & d just to design the thing so it has aesthetic appeal and typical Japanese with some sort of Philosopy behind the design. Would also think other factors around the custom airflow and the like would cost a lot given that it’s not a standard box shape

gold_drake4d ago

true, but the alternative is, relatively, a expensive ordeal.
unless you dont game at all ha.

mkis0074d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Just spent 2000k on a 4070ti super 7800x3d 1440p gaming pc. Honestly consoles will never be replaced at this wide a gap in price. I plan to get a ps5 pro too.

just_looken3d ago

@mk

You waisted 2 grand you mean

At 1440p a amd4 chipset with a 5600x3d combined with a 6750xt even a 6800 can push 1440p just a much for half the cost or less used/new and or sales.

I have a 75hhz monitor in my bedroom 1440p playing games maxed out spent around 1200cad but aio 5800x3d 32gb of ram and a 6750xt 28 or 30 inch monitor.

Every time i hear pc so expensive i just laugh you can spend less than $500 buy a used ebay rig fix it up or a office pc toss in a cheap low profile card.

Pyrofire954d ago

If you look into the hardware beyond just the CPU and GPU things start to look different, and there's plenty beyond just those two parts, those two parts even are modified to their own design in some degree.
