New Witcher Saga Announced using Unreal Engine 5 as Part of a Strategic Partnership with Epic Games

"We’re happy to announce that the next installment in The Witcher series of video games is currently in development, kicking off a new saga for the franchise.

This is an exciting moment as we’re moving from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5, beginning a multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games. It covers not only licensing, but technical development of Unreal Engine 5, as well as potential future versions of Unreal Engine, where relevant. We'll closely collaborate with Epic Games’ developers with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences.

At this point, no further details regarding the game — such as a development time frame or release date — are available. "

Damn ... they're discontinuing REDEngine? (Am interested in the technical part of the news)
Cyberpunk looked better than most UE4 game of its time.
The next version of REDEngine would've been jaw dropping if they invested more in further R&D.
Looks like the CP2077 crash hurt CDPR big time. Hence they're reducing their technical R&D budget and going for off the shelf Unreal Engine.
UE5 might looks good now since its new but once most starts using it ... it'll get boring soon.
Damn ... is this this the march towards the slow death of proprietary engines?
Is its going to be UE everywhere in future?
(I like variety in game development and prefer the unique aspects, approach and look proprietary engines bring tot he table)

CobraKai784d ago

I agree. I miss the days devs built in home engines. Sure there’s still a few, but even big companies like Namco and Square rely on Unreal instead of their own proprietary engines.

LordoftheCritics784d ago (Edited 784d ago )

Considering how impressive the Matrix demo was I dont blame them for switching.

Can see the next Cyberpunk on it as well.

I mean Silverhand could actually look proper next time around.

fr0sty784d ago

Small studios using proprietary engines is a double-edged sword... sure, the developers have much more fine-grain control over what they want and can get under the hood easier, but this engine is also expected to work across many games of many types, and because they are a small studio, their development budget to update the engine will be limited, which means the engine will begin to look aged after a few years, but it may not get updated frequently enough to keep up.

Letting middleware developers like Epic handle that, while it may not be as easily customizable for the developers, allows them to easily use state of the art features and save a ton of time along the way that can be used for making better, more refined gameplay experiences.

abstractel784d ago

I've been a developer on custom engines, UE4 and I'm currently working with UE5. My experience with UE4 was pretty smooth and UE5 is going smooth so far on a much bigger scale game but it's early days. I know in some cases Nanite and Lumen took a lot of developers by surprise, the tech is pretty darn good, so I can see why some studios are considering it and committing to it. I do know devs that complain a lot about UE too.

There's the possibility that CD Project Red lost a lot of their principal talent that were core to REDEngine but that's just a guess.

It's difficult to know after Cyberpunk 2077 but I really do hope they kept enough talent so that the next Witcher game will be awesome and look amazing.

The Decima engine looks better than Unreal Engine 5 imo

There are good and bad aspects of companies using proprietary engines. I do tend to like the variety of visual styles and unique innovations that come from companies using their own engines. That being said, a lot of issues with proprietary engines have been ironed out in engines like UE. The Red engine was great for the witcher, but from what I can recall had a lot of issues early on that may have been ironed out with an off the shelf software. It also looked good on CP2077, but also had an insane amount of weird bugs, performance issues and visual artifacts that dragged it down. It just didn't seem to be a good fit for a large urban style game.

Additionally, certain developers using proprietary engines come to rely on them as a crux and therefore never innovate or improve visuals. Developers like Bethesda that have been using the same engine since morrowind I believe (like 20 years?), and you can see the same issues release after release. If they license an engine, they would upgrade with the tech and improve things like graphics, animation, pathfinding, and ai. Mlb the show suffers from this. The game looks OK on ps5, but it could look stunning if they would innovate within their engine or license a new one. Instead we get a higher res Version of the same looking game from 10 plus years ago.

RaidenBlack783d ago

Just to add in ... for everybody's clarification. Its not Witcher 4.
From CDPR:
https://twitter.com/gamebow...

Tacoboto784d ago

CP2077 definitely change CDPR a lot, but this partnership is surely going to be mutually beneficial.

For all that UE4 did not have that RED did or that RED did better (like the tweet mentions), maybe this tech partnership will see CDPR's improvements/customizations merged into UE5 proper. We know enough about Unreal that one dev's version is not the same as another's.

The Coalition & Gears 5's UE4 especially cannot be compared to the version EA/Respawn used for Star Wars Jedi which also cannot be compared to how it was leveraged in It Takes Two. I fail to recall the game(s) mentioned, but Digital Foundry has called out a few titles in recent years for using 'stock' techniques available in UE, or when developers do their own obvious improvements (like one title that had minimal PC stuttering compared to other UE4 games).

The Matrix demo showed us that Epic isn't afraid to use help from partners, when they had Coalition assist on the Xbox version. If partnerships and tech sharing like that can make their way into the source of the engine, that helps every developer out. They can spend more time focusing on their content as opposed to the tech powering it.

ZwVw784d ago

Not too thrilled about this news (engine switch). History has shown that studios who usually drop their in-house engines in favor of UE come up short. Starbreeze nearly went bankrupt mainly in part to their decision to drop their proprietary engine for UE (forcing many of their engineers learn a tech which was foreign to them on the fly). Hopefully CDPR won't share the same fate.

frostypants784d ago (Edited 784d ago )

The engine has very little to do with how the game looks from a creative standpoint. When games "look" like UE4 it's due to uncreative lazy devs, not the engine. People also seem to be forgetting what a mess CP2077 was for so long, and a lot of that was fighting with their own engine.

slowgamer784d ago

Cyberpunk had all sorts of streaming problems and by not making new engine they save ton of time.
I think unreal 5 can be versatile as any if you don't take the easiest route.

neutralgamer1992784d ago

Raiden

UR5 has the backing of all the big companies that maybe the reason so many are picking it. Sony and Ms themselves have invested over half of billion in epic along with Tencent money

Cyberpunk 2077 didn't look anything like the original trailer so forgot about it

pietro1212782d ago

Was I the only one not impressed by that Matrix demo? It looked blurry offen times, characters models ranged from ugly to great. I know Unreal is a good engine, but that demo was underwhelming. I’m more impressed by Square’s recent tech demos.

Hope they dont release an unfinished game this time, like Cyberpunk 2077. Dont care how long it takes, just release a witcher game thats up to the standard of the last 3. And make sure you include Gwent too

Snakeeater25784d ago

If they release it when it’s ready, it don’t be till 2026

Beef5upreme83784d ago

Thats the problem when they announce a game too early, everyone demands it comes out as soon as possible. They should announce 12-24 months out to stop the hype train. I dont mind waiting until its 100 percent ready. At least i know it will be of a high standard. A game as big as Witcher 3 takes time to make, and it will take more time to surpass the quality of Witcher 3.

RaiderNation784d ago (Edited 784d ago )

Just please dear 8lb 6oz baby Jesus, do not attempt to make this game "woke"! I want this game to be as chock full of bloody violence and sexual debauchery as the previous games! LOL!

annoyedgamer784d ago (Edited 784d ago )

Witcher 3 already started toning down the sex compare to 2.

philm87783d ago

There wasn't that much in 2 was there? I don't think wokeness is much about levels of sex and violence anyway, they're more likely to complain about racism towards elves.

CrimsonWing69784d ago

Don't watch dog us with a fake video this time. Just be transparent, we all loved Wicther 3, we know you guys make exceptional games, no need to lie to everyone with fake videos to generate hype you can't deliver on.

philm87783d ago

What fake video did they release for Cyberpunk?

philm87783d ago

Thanks for the answer that proves to me you have no idea what you're talking about.

pietro1212783d ago

Actually the 20 min demo was revealed to be CG and not gameplay. https://www.gamesindustry.b...

They also lied about gameplay features like law enforcement and local gangs pursuing you which is non existent

philm87782d ago

@pietro1212 there's a massive difference between some anonymous people claiming something is fake and it actually being fake. I mean it doesn't look like CG to me, and it looks/plays better than it looks like in that video now anyhow. Have you actually played the game yourself.
There is law enforcement and has always been, which they've improved massively. Certainly not on GTA V pursuit levels, but the game isn't GTA so it doesn't really matter.
Local gangs do pursue you. If you annoy them in missions they will attack you on site if they see you. An example of this is if you turn against the Voodoo Boys in one of the main story missions.
This game is a masterpiece now. Just a shame it was released too early.

Xbox Gives Incoherent Explanation For ‘Hi-Fi Rush’ Studio Closure

The gaming world is still reeling from the announcement that Microsoft is shuttering Tango Gameworks, the studio behind last year’s big Xbox hit, Hi-Fi Rush.

Reaper22_6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

They have a reason but they don't need to give a explanation. Gamers nowadays think they have a say so in telling people how to run their company. It's not the end of the world, fanboys. Microsoft is gonna due what benefits them the most. It's never been about you. Same with sony. Some of you need to get a grip. The crazy part is that some of the ones complaining don't even own an xbox.

enkiduxiv5h ago

I don’t own an Xbox and I have no real interest in HiFi Rush. I just hate to see a talented group of people lose their jobs when they did everything that was asked of them. You know… the decent, normal reaction to have when something like this happens.

Relientk771d 8h ago

There's no logical or good reason to give for closing Tango Gameworks. They make great games consistently and Hi-Fi Rush was the highest rated Xbox game in literal YEARS. Closing the studio was just plain stupid and nonsensical.

notachance13h ago

It’s quite strange to not see Phil Spencer in any talkshow or podcast… usually the dude would talk almost daily when there’s even a bit of news from xbox.

And when your company does badly, you get extra money to encourage you to stick around and lead it through the storm...And at some point, you get to bow out and float toward retirement on your golden parachute, which means and you guessed it, MORE MONEY!! What a deal for snake oil man Phil!!

She's kinda got the verbal communication of 3-years-ago Biden trying to say something he knows nothing about.
What she meant to say is: "We wasted our budget for the next couple years buying Call of Duty, and we're moving all our chips to that one series"

It's starting to seem quite obvious that XBox is going to be shutting down most of their studios or selling them off, then focusing on some sort of PC/Console hybrid OS for the next XBox where they can collect royalties Valve style.

esherwood10h ago

To be fair I don’t think there is a good answer, I’d rather her been honest but that probably would have pissed more people of then the word salad route.

CantThinkOfAUsername10h ago

- 1% increase in net sales compared to a year with Forspoken and Octopath Traveller II, which didn't sell more than 3 millions combined (and I'm being generous).

- A 38.3% decrease in operating income despite the release of 'High-Definition' titles namely FFXVI, FF Pixels Remaster, Dragon Quest Monsters, and FFVII Rebirth.

- Aggressive multiplatform strategy one year after saying that exclusivity with PlayStation was mutually desired.

Sure, it's all in my head.

Sonic188113h ago(Edited 13h ago)

Probably for PC and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Square Enix games doesn't sell to well on Xbox

Extermin8or3_13h ago

Nothing sells well on Xbox that's precisely Microsoft's problem

The3faces12h ago

Apparently they don't sell well on PlayStation either.

Lightning7712h ago

Square named Drops Xbox as part of their multiplatform approach in their quarterly reports.

Like it matters MS will probably find away to close them down to.

FinalFantasyFanatic2h ago

I can see them going for PS5/Switch/PC for the most part, it'll mostly likely be the Switch 2 by the time their next game enters development, which is probably a good thing since the Switch is struggling with 3rd party games. If they're hurting for money/sales, I don't see them bothering with Xbox, that's just wasted time/money for them.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 2h ago
DarXyde13h ago

I mean, maybe? They'll want as much as possible and I figure they could have been hoping for greater impact on PlayStation, but that's good reason to reflect and realize the resources and development cycle of these games aren't very sustainable. The solution is to make more affordable games with shorter dev cycles, then once in a while bring out the big guns.

I think Final Fantasy VII Re make and Rebirth would do really well if it was multiplatform. Specifically, if Nintendo gets their hardware up to snuff, and the rumors are promising. I don't really have much faith in its performance on Xbox, but Nintendo gamers really commit to buying their games. At one point, Breath of the Wild for Switch outsold the Switch itself.

Granted, Zelda always solos everything except GTA, but Nintendo folk are avid Final Fantasy fans. I think it would do exceptionally. Nintendo just needs to make porting easy and inexpensive and they'll get more games.

FinalFantasyFanatic2h ago

I don't think the exclusivity hurts them as badly as they think, I think it's a range of factors, like the quality of the games, high sales expectations, ESG/DEI, censorship, development costs/time... I also suspect that Square-Enix is extremely inefficient with their resources, they struggled/avoided towns in the FF13 trilogy, and FF14 was mostly wilderness with little to do apart from derp about in the wild (they also avoid towns and making a lot of characters there too). But FF14 also went through development hell, I think Square-Enix just needs to overall how they do everything, because the way they manage that studio just isn't working.

Christopher12h ago

The two most profitable games for them didn't sell as much as expected. Yes. Make it make sense.

MrCrimson9h ago

I interpret it as - they want to be multiplatform, as they will sell more copies.

EternalTitan8h ago

16 isnt even a JRPG let alone a final fantasy game.

Adding Nintendo and PC customers is the best way to increase sales and long term success. Not going to get that from Xbox.

Hofstaderman18h ago

Will there be a XBOX for Square to release games on? Or a MS Games service?

thesoftware73017h ago

Hof,

You must not have heard they are launching new hardware and have already committed to a Next-Gen Xbox.

But, for some reason, I think you already knew that and wanted to spin a silly narrative; besides, why wouldn't they release games on the SX/SS? You do know these consoles will still be here, right?

Hofstaderman16h ago(Edited 16h ago)

Optics. They have a STATED plan to do so. Thats not commitment. The shareholders and board are calling the shots now. Lets see if they have the appetite for hardware because they are owed 80 Billion Dollars already. Investment in hardware, R and D and marketing is how much again? That cost with the history of their hardware performance....at most maybe a handheld. What I am certain of XBOX is finished, the writing has been on the wall before the studio closures. Its MS Games and they are not hardware. They are software because MS is a software company. Expect them to be folded in the Surface team.

DarXyde13h ago

I believe they committed to hardware.

I hate to nitpick, but that's kind of the company they are. You have to.

"They have a STATED plan to do so. That's not commitment."

Huh? What are you talking about? They announced they would be unveiling new Hardware this holiday season; how else are they supposed to commit to it?

" Lets see if they have the appetite for hardware because they are owed 80 Billion Dollars already"

What a silly statement, you think this deal was approved so they could make 80 billion in less than a year? This is a long-term commitment, a future-proofing of profit.

"What I am certain of XBOX is finished,"

No, you are not certain of this lol; as you stated, if they make even a Handheld in the form of a Steam-Deck that can dock to a TV/monitor, wouldn't that be just changing the form factor but still XBOX?

Closing these studios has really got you guys delusional; that is what happens in companies, in a changing market: you acquire, and you trim; like it or not, that is the way things are done. Lets look.

Where is the new Psygnosis with a new wipeout?
What happened to Japan Studio? Pixl Opus? London Studio?
Where is Zipper Interactive?

I can list more, but you see, closing devs doesn't mean your company is finished, especially when you have like 30+ dev teams.

Extermin8or3_13h ago

They won't be unveiling the hardware this holiday season it will be like the series x and s they got a tease at the game awards 2018. But no details until year of their release in 2020 lol

Michiel19898h ago

I'm kinda worried about the future of DQ though, Toriyama and the composer both passed away. Huge blow to the franchise.

FinalFantasyFanatic2h ago

@Michiel1989,
Akira Toriyama had an understudy though, he emulates his style, so maybe he'll do the art for Dragon Quest games, I would love to see Nobue Uematsu do music for the series though, that could be fun if they could convince him.

FinalFantasyFanatic2h ago

I'll be so p*ssed if that doesn't go ahead, also, where's DQ12 at? They've been silent on that for so long, and it was announced years ago.

@gold_Drake,
I'm pretty sure they can siphon some profit from A Realm Reborn to keep FF and Dragon Quest going too. I think the company would have gone bankrupt if it wasn't for that cash cow.

Charal18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

Another sign that dedicated consoles market is in trouble, while PC seems more and more attractive to big publishers.

Having a good gaming PC and a PS5 myself, given current trend form both Sony and MS I am less and less playing on PS5, waiting for exclusives to release on PC, so I understand the logic behind the new strategy.

anast17h ago

Post those numbers. Then your comment might make sense.

thesoftware73016h ago(Edited 16h ago)

Ants,

I get that we don't know exactly without numbers, but come on, man, we can clearly see what's happening.

The console market has not grown much, the highest-selling console in history is still the PS2. You can play the " prove it" game all you want, but Sony's more aggressive PC push, SE completely rebooting their company/business, after being mainly exclusive to one console and showing a sizeable profit loss is telling.

PC is a high seller, and your doubtful PS5 dominant stance does not change the clear writing on the wall, straight from Sony's mouth, that they need to be, and will be more aggressive in the very lucrative PC market.

So, in other words, PC market is indeed looking more and more attractive to Pubs.

anast16h ago

@730

Numbers?

I'm willing to bet the farm that ¨PC gamers are not the dominate number compared to console, but I don't know because I don't have numbers. However, the price point of entry can allow us to infer what I had just stated.

anast11h ago

@All the people with that good 'ol folk wisdom

It's ironic how I clearly asked for the site and people still can't even answer this simple question.

Tell me how many people click on random links on forums?

Tell me the site and I will look. I don't mind being wrong and I'm barely intelligent enough to change my mind with something substantial.

All the numbers I have seen is that PC doesn't even come close console gaming in revenue, and nothing touches mobile gaming. More people touching something doesn't mean anything. It just means more people own PC for work and touch Steam every now and again, those numbers mean even less.

From what I can ascertain PC is a smaller market than PS. There are occasionally times when PC looks to be stronger but overall it's still behind.

PC also has a lot more competition, especially when people can easily buy and play older games from 20 or so years ago on it.
