Epic Splashes Fortnite Millions Luring Game Developers to Ditch Steam

Inviting the wrath of diehard Steam fans, Epic Games continues to snap up Epic Store exclusives by throwing millions at developers.

Question_Mark1778d ago

Epic can’t compete with Steam at all, so why not buy their way to popularity? It reminds me of a spoiled rich kid using daddy’s money to buy shortcuts to things everyone else has to work hard for, then bragging about how cool they are while doing none of the work.

DarkOcelet1778d ago

Well tbh, the only thing Epic did by making the games exclusive for a year is making me start working on the massive backlog I have on Steam so for me, its a win/win situation as I will be able to purchase all those games a year or two later for dirt cheap on Steam AND clear quite a bit of the games on my backlog lol. So well done Epic for wasting your Fortnite money.

KaaF1777d ago (Edited 1777d ago )

Ah, steam fanboys coming up with their head cannon. They are both multi billion companies, but keep up the nice fan fiction.

Reefskye1777d ago (Edited 1777d ago )

Ah, Epic Fanboys... oh look it works the same way. Criticising Epics business model does not make you a steam fanboy.

Think you will find every PC gamer uses more than one launcher difference is Epic doesn't make enough games to justify a launcher like Uplay or Origin, so they use anti consumer practises under the guise of "better for developers". So keep up your fan fiction of everyone who dislikes epic is being a fanboy

SephirothX211777d ago (Edited 1777d ago )

@Reefsky
It's not anti-consumer practice, it's business and Epic just gave 1.5 million dollars to the blender foundation with no strings attached. Epic have put in the work. They make one of the most popular and high performance game engines in the world. They offer reduced royalties for developers and they have been working on the store for years. Steam take a 30 percent cut from developers. Epic give you a free engine with 12% royalty for their store. People can vote with their money if they're so upset.

Reefskye1777d ago (Edited 1777d ago )

Well if you see my comments you will see i actually gave epic credit for giving blender that money, other publishers can learn from that. My point is why should i or anyone download Epic's launcher because they used money to get a game tout how amazing they are to developers, yet do any of them give you any sort of better deal? No they don't, they give you a below par launcher with hardly any games. The only reason anyone has to use it because they have no other choice.

If you wanted to support the developer you would buy your games from GoG even CD project Red have said they get all the profits, So why should i buy from Epic they offer a worse deal than GoG limit consumer choice, So if you really wanted to support developers people would use GoG all the time but they don't because no one actually cares. It's just a shady practise for Epic to get their foot in the door because they don't make enough games to juisfty actually having a store front. Limiting my choice is anti consumer.

PapaBop1777d ago (Edited 1777d ago )

What are you waffling on about? Not once did he even praise Steam but as he is criticising Epic naturally that makes him a Steam fanboy. Also Steam is a big part as to why Valve have so much money... they didn't buy their way to success with Steam, they earned it.

MadLad1777d ago

Love that people still want to feign being dense to the fact this isn't Steam fanboyism - GoG, Gamersgate, Greenman, Humble all have a lucrative, if smaller, chunk of the market and all offer unique elements to their store - with Gog's updating of old games for new hardware and being drm free, Gamersgate acquiring rights to obscure titles many of the other stores don't bother with and offering a point system for free content, Greenman often times offering large discounts for pre-orders and allowing resales back to them, and Humble with a large backlog of games at a per month cost as well as the monthly bundle.

What does EPIC offer?
Wee bot deh excloosiv!!

nyu11777d ago

Come on now, you don't have to be a Steam fanboy to dislike the way Epic is doing things.

Why can't they compete? Steam has gotten a bit complacent in recent years, with it's only real competition coming from publishers like EA and Ubisoft. You're crazy if you think they don't view them as competition. This is a good thing. While I don't want to have a million launchers, I want the few I do have to use to be good, and competition makes that happen. I don't see why people are getting so bent out of shape, it's not like with consoles where you have to buy another console to have access to the exclusives, you just download their dumb launcher.

Silly gameAr1778d ago (Edited 1778d ago )

ccn knows just what clickbaity headlines to use for their articles.

XiNatsuDragnel1778d ago

Steam vs Epic. I want steam to improve and mess up Epic

ocelot071777d ago

I couldn't care less it's only a game launcher. Providing the game works as intended when I install it I don't care what store I get my game from.

CBaoth1777d ago

sometimes though you have stand up for principles. I find it amusing that console gamers have had to combat silly third party exclusive deals for a decade but somehow now it's acceptable on PC? That's the 800 lb gorilla in the room.

nyu11777d ago

"That's the 800 lb gorilla in the room."

Except it's exclusivity to a launcher. So more like an 8 pound gorilla.

It's so trivial 99% of the time... it is a joke, yet people keep whining like it's the end of the world. In practice, for the consumer, how on earth is it any different from playing games on Origin or something ? It isn't. It's all based on 'principle' despite the fact that it makes little to no difference to the consumer experience the vast majority of the time.

bluefox7551777d ago

Same. I get it with the console fanboys, you want to justify your investment, but with the launchers? I fail to see how competition hurts any of us.

CBaoth1776d ago (Edited 1776d ago )

Because they're not competing, understand? Improving your store with requested features is competing. Offering incentives and cutbacks for using UE4 is competing. Offering reduced royalties to entice developers is competing. Offering preferential storefront placement and marketing assistance to smaller devs is competing. Know what's NOT competing? Buying exclusivity because you can't compete....on an open platform!?! Not only is it shady but downright pathetic. I hope CDR sell 30 million copies of Cyberpunk and start ruffling Tim Sweeney's feathers. That would be Epic

MadLad1777d ago

If they would just offer a competent store, stop their buy-out crap, and offer competitive deals, I'd have the thing downloaded.

Hell. Here's an idea ..
Take your mountain of Fortnite riches .... AND FUND YOUR OWN INDIES AND EXCLUSIVES INTERNALLY!

For the first time in a long time I have a hard time feeling excited for these events. Maybe it's because of all these massive lay offs and closures there hasn't exactly been good news since the start of the year.

Maybe come next week I'll get a little more excited but I dunno I just can't get too excited right now

thorstein6h ago

Maybe it will be an indie showcase.

Cacabunga1h ago

Cancelling e3 and introducing some ridiculous events..
Times have changed.. to the worse

Lightning7744m ago(Edited 41m ago)

Back then it was very exciting, great looking trailers, on stage live gameplay where yes things can and have went wrong but that's how we knew it was a real games being played instead of curated footage extra doctored up that didn't even represent the actual game half the time. Games would release 6 months to a year max not 3 years later.

I miss past E3's even the goofiness like Giant enemy crab or Riiiidge Raceeer. Xbox and Kinect glitching Nintendo's craziness. Again it was real, these days there so protective, clean, doctored sets, where nothing can absolutely go wrong. Too strict and professional with heavy PR babble with buzzwords that mean nothing. Being professional is not bad but when it's fake and corporate heavy where you're made to buy into the words rather than the game, that's how you know it's not real.

Now SFG is just sizzle reeling all the games at once. Plus past SGF events haven't been that great either. Maybe that's not Geoffs fault but the pubs and devs are simply never ready to show anything and have to wait. This gen we've been waiting and waiting for these games.

Plus lay offs as I Mentioned. I dunno Geoff needs to do what made E3 great back then, get funding support and do live stage gameplay he has the support and so why not? Pubs and devs need to do their own thing at the event again. No more doctored bull crap with PR diarrhea trying to sell the game show us with a controller in your hand instead of making empty promises.

Rant over.

Cacabunga35m ago(Edited 34m ago)

Lightning

I will never forget the pre-e3 one year where Kojima was teasing MGS Rising.. and Peace Walker.

Such an incredible period where studios enjoyed what they were doing and teasing their work weeks before the event.

Nowadays is half baked games, cross gen titles, useless mid gen upgrades. There is no hype anymore.
Last great show I remember is the PS EXPERIENCE maybe 3 or 4 years ago in December

isarai3h ago

Is it just me or is there little to no buzz or marketing leading up to this compared to previous SGF?

bRuud8359m ago

Where is Sony? Still no news about the next Playstation showcase.

VR255m ago

It'll be June sometimes no doubt, I'm guessing the Saturday 10th the day after Xbox showcase or maybe sometime the following week

[Exclusive] Xbox Reaches Agreement With Batman: Arkham Trilogy Creators For A New AAA Game

Ex-Rocksteady directors' Hundred Star is collaborating with Xbox Game Studios Publishing for its first-ever AAA game.

Lightning778h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Highly doubt it'll be an actual Batman game that IP belongs to WB Games along with other DC property.

They're making an action adventure game. IMO I think it needs to be another Marvel game despite MS already have Blade as that action Marvel game. Dead Pool? Punisher?

Realistically it'll probably be a new IP entirely.

The_Hooligan7h ago

I agree with you. I think I'll be a brand new IP. Now it could be a superhero themed, kind of like infamous. Speaking of which, Suckerpunch needs to make one after Ghost 2.

neutralgamer19927h ago

would love a infamous collection for ps5/pc

Lightning776h ago

I definitely think it'll be super hero themed game 100%. Something MS needs in their portfolio.

ThinkThink4h ago

Please, no more super hero games.

PhillyDonJawn4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Dead Pool or Punisher would be amazing!!!
Don't tease me like that man lol. I see them making a new IP that's like an arkham knight clone

Dirty_Lemons32m ago

I loved the old Punisher game back in the day. Those executions never got old.

MIDGETonSTILTS177h ago(Edited 7h ago)

I hope these devs needed support to start/finish (like Stalker 2), vs are basically done with the game but wanted to secure an exclusivity-bonus because they know Xbox needs a system seller (like Titanfall).

It’s a bit strange that they’d rather invest in this game than Tangoworks’ TWO canceled projects; or just trust a single dev from their existing massive stable of talent to emerge with a system-seller themselves anytime soon.

Either way, it is just cool that we’ll likely get a new IP from the geniuses behind the Arkham Trilogy. I wonder how creative they’ll get now that they aren’t married to an established franchise.

darthv727h ago

This is about the former co-founders of Rocksteady and their new studio. So naturally it makes people think its Batman related with the way its worded, even though its not.

-Foxtrot6h ago

Exclusive? Sure

This year alone Microsoft has changed their plans so much with Xbox regarding multiplatform releases as they step closer to just being a full blown third party publisher and it's only been 4-5 months, imagine where we'll be once this game is finished. It will be a completely different landscape.

ThinkThink4h ago

I don't think MS will ever go completely full 3rd party with all of their games. I can see them looking towards expanding their own mobile store and moving into Mac as ways of expanding. I'm sure ms will bring more exclusives over to ps and nintendo, but I don't think it'll be as many games as you think it will. I hope I'm wrong.

Lightning774h ago

The ever contradictions thoughts and actions of MS definitely says otherwise MS changed up so much on the past 6 months of the year I lost count.

Though I'm more declined to believe they also won't go full 3rd party also.

But.

This year they're having Renaissance a super bowl of gaming with Gamepass this year. BO6, older ABK games, Avowed, Indy and other 3rd party exclusives all to grow and expand gamepass. If these games don't grow the service or grow only a little bit. Then you can fully expect MS to hit the red button and put everything everywhere. Satya will have full Xbox take over doing what he wants from that point on next year.

It's up to Xbox to advertise these games and gamepass in the next 6 months or so get the word out.

Profchaos3h ago

The more the news evolves the more I'm inclined to believe we will see MS embrace full third party status but not call it third party in their word soup ways.

It will be Xbox everywhere plays best on a Xbox.

Next gen Xbox is rumoured to be a reference design similar to the 3d0 where any company can make and sell it.

If you're offloading hardware costs to a third party yet still profiting from the games then you've cut out losses on the hardware you still have a store front that users can use and still make a 30 percent cut on that.

Your games sell for a profit on PS and Nintendo platforms and on Xbox reference hardware along with PC

You lose .kney on DLC and games sold on a competitor storefront they are seemingly already comfortable with this.

The ms bean counters are coming for the ROI that was promised they don't care if they kill the brand as it stands Xbox was never a profitable business it was always just done for reputation

PhillyDonJawn3h ago

@Lightning the would end the console then. No one would buy Xbox over PS at that point cause now you get both with just a PS. If GP flop for them, Logically, rolling back on GP would be the smarter than to do. No more day 1 title. Less quality titles. They'd lose subs but people would go back to buying the games.

Lightning771h ago

@Philly They could scale back gamepass put Indies only, AAA 1st party games coming 4 to 6 months from release. The thing is MS will have to tell their fans to buy their games again and that's gonna take years and years to condition them to buy games again. MS will lose money from that also. They'll lose out on gamepass revenue, lose out on games sales because their fans don't buy as many games anymore.

I can't see them scaling back or axing gamepass it does make them allot of money, they just want more money from it. They're not gonna condition their fans to start buying games either.

As I said they'll go full 3rd party and yes you ate right, if they do that then there would be no reason to buy the next Xbox. I know j won't be, you better hope the next 6 months they advertise the games and GP there little hearts out because this could be it.

Spawn (as well as master chief) are the only characters I associate with Xbox. Are there more I can’t remember?

rlow15h ago

Gears is another big game one.

purple1015h ago

Yeh big game, do you know the name of the lead character. Or team of lead characters. I don’t

rlow15h ago

Marcus, Dom, Cole Train. And I can’t remember the fourth.

Profchaos3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Also the chick from gears 5 seems to pop up on all their modern advertising I can't remember her name either.

Cars also feature heavily in a Xbox ad it's always master chief front and centre with cars and maybe a gears character hanging around

Boosteroid Plans On Adding More AAAA Titles Exclusively To The Service

The VP of Marketing at Boosteroid revealed that the company is in talks with major publishers to secure exclusive games on the service.

Relientk771d 15h ago

So they're adding Skull and Bones to their service? That doesn't seem exciting at all lol.
