Microsoft and 2K pick sides in the battle between Epic and Steam

It's starting to feel like Epic is picking all the good players for dodgeball, and Valve is just standing there. But that's not quite true.

The store exclusivity drama is only going to heighten from here.

Cobra9511837d ago

"Exclusivity"--no; I still don't get it. I get that God of War is exclusive, because I have an Xbox and not a PS4. But my PC is wide open to all comers. Nothing is excluded from me there, regardless of who sells it to me.

Eonjay1837d ago (Edited 1837d ago )

This! Store Wars is a new low for the media.

Teflon021837d ago

What features are available have exclusivity though. I love my steam achievements and if it's not a multiplayer game I want all my achievements etc under one umbrella.

Spartacus101836d ago

The better solution to that problem would be a standardised achievements system run by an independent organisation.

Telling devs which stores they should sell their games on just so that you can keep your achievements in one place is like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Zeref1836d ago

lol you're the only person that gives af about steam achievements

TheColbertinator1837d ago

Basically the best way to look at this scenario. EGS or Steam or Origin are all just the choices available on PC. Nothing more complicated than that.

Atom6661836d ago

Until those choices offer a more complete and comparable experience to Steam, it is a bit more complicated.

Epic is apparently working on it, but it's the the fact that many gamers have been enjoying many of these features for years on Steam, but can't on these timed "exclusives," that has caused the biggest issues.

If Epic sticks to their plan, maybe most of these complaints will die down.

Atom666 the android store sounds very good

ILostMyMind1836d ago

Congratz! You are a normal person.

babadivad1836d ago

Epic needs user reviews. It's the reason a lot of gamers are bent about Epic "exclusivity". It weighted too much towards the publishers. And it seems publishers are paying to keep it that way.

I think it's a bad time for PC gaming. A year ago was a great time. Everything basically releases on PC now, Steam was looked at as the platform for PC outside specifics which was fine etc. Everything was simple and such. Then Discord and Epic opens stores and epics using all it's fortnite money to make a mess out of PC gaming. I only went to PC because of Steams ability to unify the PC space and make everything enjoyable under 1 umbrella. Epic thankfully hasn't grabbed a game I care for but they're doing the thing that made me avoid PC gaming all this time. Like Unreal and fortnite I wouldn't complain about. I don't complain about Black Ops 4, Destiny or Overwatch etc. Ubisoft allows buying of most games on Steam still, just connected to Uplay etc. That's all fine. But the moment it became a platform paying to take exclusives away like Rise of the Tomb Raider was. It's a problem. I think indies going to Epic makes sense and I wouldn't be mad at that. But games with initial intentions to release on Steam but change because of a timed exclusive money hat lol. That's a mess. Epics has shown the lack of care for anyone but themselves and are trying to mask it in the devs 12% vs 30% situation. Why? Because they're the same ppl who had the nerve to actually release Fortnite on Android through installing a unofficial apk because they didn't want to share profits with the platform holder. They're just selfish and greedy. It's the same ploy MS pulls with the crossplay, they're only willing to share games with Switch because Sony said no to the XBL request and that's the main competitor. The moment sony started, they stopped until they found out it isn't exactly as easy to get the okay as ppl hoped. Then they started with sharing games lol. Hell, MS probably isn't having the BS and why it's MCC is coming to steam lol. Because they could have been a MS store exclusive

Wtf? I’ve never heard that expression before, hahaha

Why is it that they're pushing so hard for exclusivity. Why cant games release on both platforms? The problem is that Epic knows it's the far inferior store and to compensate they're just going to throw a lot of money at the big publishers and devs to buy exclusivity. So instead of actually building up their store to legitimately compete with steam they've opted to hold games hostage. Just make sure you never have a card on file in the Epic store.

Spartacus101836d ago

If you're a dev, the inferior store is the one that makes you less money, and I highly doubt devs would have signed exclusivity deals with Epic if they thought they could have made more on Steam. Lets not pretend that Epic have a gun pointed at the devs heads when they sign exclusivity. They do it because its benefits them more than steam does.
I cant wait until the arrogance of valve/steam gets the better of them.

FGHFGHFGH1836d ago

Epic is paying publishers for exclusives aren't they? LOL what arrogance of steam? Do you have something to prove steam is beng "arrogant"? What do you have against steam if you don't even play games on pc? 30% is industry standard and what microsoft, sony, google etc all charge.

Seafort1836d ago

You do realise that Epic are paying ($2m+) these devs to be exclusive and are also guaranteeing a revenue if they get low sales. This is not a self sustaining agreement but a short term investment by Epic to get more people to their store and undercutting the established market. They are literally removing already Steam marketed games from Steam and making them exclusive to their store for a year or more.

If this isn't anti-competitive and anti-consumer with a dose of monopoly I don't know what is.

Fluttershy771836d ago

Or if you look at it from the other side the problem is Steam never really had any competition

knickstr1836d ago

I agree that Steam needs competition, but this ain't it. People get upset when Sony or Microsoft buy a multiplatforms exclusivity so why should this be any different?

Fluttershy771836d ago (Edited 1836d ago )

Well for me the difference is that Sony and Nintendo are making games, making exclusives, trying to make advances in the media, taking risks (not so much Microsoft but even them); instead Valve is playing completely safe since I don't remember when. When was the last time they released a game?... I honestly don't know, all these years and they did nothing with what it should be their exclusives: Half Life, Team Fortress, Portal, Counter... These are the games that for sure will never have an exclusivity deal with Epic, but, who cares? They are dead. Valve choose to let their ip's die and hold the platform- that they don't own- as a hostage, sucking the blood out of PC gamers... Well now they have competition.

thesoftware7301h ago

So I don't think those 3 games make it a great month?

Thanks for telling me.

romulus2322h ago

Just recently finished playing Immortals of Aveum on PSplus extra, can definitely recommend it to those who like fps magic wielding type games, it's really good.

Elda21h ago

I own & played Immortals Of Aveum & Lords Of The Fallen already. The only game on that list I'm going to try is Hellblade 2.

H920h ago

Chants Of Sennaar is a favorite of mine, if you like to figure things out as you go, literally decipher what the hell is going on, play it it's amazing

Microsoft's Absurd Antics Have Me Scared For Dishonored And Arkane Lyon's Future

With Arkane Austin no more and Lyon living for who knows how long, the superb Dishonored is in serious danger; Microsoft cannot be trusted.

Relientk771d 15h ago

I love the Dishonored series so much and really want Dishonored 3. Microsoft better not screw this up.

JEECE1d 12h ago

I mean, I think the fans will probably kill Arkane Lyon by cooking up reasons to hate whatever they do next without playing it. I've never seen a game so artificially disliked as Deathloop.

thesoftware7301d 12h ago

Lol, why don't we just say, we are worried about all studios owned by MS now. They will keep closing studios until they have none left ...🙄

Skuletor1d 9h ago

Just merge them all into a single studio, have it churn out a single Call of Duty every year and call it a day, lol.

Barlos1d 9h ago

Don't be scared, you'll be fine.

Skuletor1d 9h ago

It's exputer, fine is one word I would not associate with them.

Profchaos1d 9h ago

I think it's becoming clear based on matt bootys comments there's no future for any IP that can't sell above 10 million within the launch window. But is also a small game that gives them prestige

/S it's beyond a joke right now

Xbox No Longer Has Its Head In The Game

Microsoft & Xbox have shut down Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks to lay off more workers, insinuating that they're not in the game anymore.

XiNatsuDragnel4d ago

They're headless for a long time because closing tango isn't exactly a good move

PapaBop3d ago

Ever since that cringe Kinect reveal they've never been the same. They used to make some amazing games and do great deals with third parties Early on in the 360 era they had games like Chromehounds and Shadowrun, both well ahead of their time. Now instead of nurturing their studios, they'd rather gaslight gamers and throw billions on pre existing studios. Not sure how Spencer is still in a job, I wouldn't trust him to organise a piss-up in a brewery.

Father__Merrin3d ago

We've said all along Spencer needs to go. I wish xbox went back to xbox only with new gears fable forza halo releases lots of third party releases

Those early rainbow 6 Vegas days and phantasy star universe are gone forever

S2Killinit2d ago

MS has its head in the game but the game they are playing is something different from what console gamers expect from a platform. MS’s end game has always been to use the xbox as a trojan horse.

XiNatsuDragnel2d ago

Lol that's funny well this plan they have isn't working homie

“Acquisitions always come with cuts”

343 trillion points shield activated
343 trillion percent damage negate activated
All damage reduced to 1 for 343 trillion turns.
MICROSOFT DEFENSE FORCE IS A GO

Tacoboto3d ago

Especially for Microsoft, when Booty pretty much said they didn't know how to handle that many studios.

Why even make the acquisition then.

-Foxtrot3d ago

Didn’t they make the swipe for Bethesda when Sony wanted like 6 months exclusiveness for Starfield

It’s like…chill, you got Rise of the Tomb Raider for a year.

romulus233d ago

Do they always come with senseless cuts becasue that's exactly what cutting Tango was, senseless.

H93d ago

Everyone's acting now that game companies care about games and Xbox is committing the Ultimate betrayal, they are all like this and you have just been quiet about it for far too long

Nuclearmoon3d ago

I wonder if Microsoft do pull out of the console market that it might open the door for valve to relaunch the Steambox. Competition is good for the industry but Microsoft don't even seem to be trying anymore.

UltimateOwnage3d ago

Steam / Valve are one of the few truly pro-consumer bright spots in gaming right now. Thankfully.

Jingsing2d ago

From all the money Valve make from Steam they reinvest almost 0 into creating new AAA titles for the PC platform, Absolutely no giving nothing back in that regard. Wake up.
