Rage Over Borderlands 3's Epic Games' Store Exclusivity Is More Legitimate Than It Seems

Borderlands fans are raging about the fact that 'Borderlands 3' will be exclusive to Epic Games. And while it seems absurd, there are legitimate complaints in there too.

Cloud saves are convenient, and Epic should have them. But I don't solely rely on cloud saves to begin with. I backup my save files regularly. I've had an issue before with one of my cloud saves being corrupted, so I don't depend on cloud saving anymore.

As far as credit cards being leaked, I've never had that problem. I usually pay online through PayPal, and every purchase requires my fingerprint.

Though every major network has been hacked and has suffered data theft, including Steam. No network will be safe from that.

How many more articles will get made calling Steam this oppressive monopoly on PC gaming? The amount of launchers and store fronts I have on my desktop speaks otherwise. Anyone who plays games on Steam likes having their library in one spot, not fragmented between 6 launchers. I don't care if Epic puts Fortnite on their own store but don't inconvenience everyone by splitting random releases out like some bee hive. This so far has not benefited consumers and I can tell you in time it won't give any significant advantage to consumers vs what Steam does currently. The only thing I've seen Epic do is have 2 titles $10 cheaper on their store for a limited time, which is only available to NA and EU region. Meanwhile, I'll go to GmG and get the same thing for at least 25% off. It's a joke and the only reason these articles keep popping up is because it's easy outrage fuel for clicks, nothing more.

I was just having a convo with my buddy the other day about this exact same topic. It's not like there aren't options other than steam. There are plenty of stores that are doing just fine without buying timed exclusivity and pointing the finger at steam for not supporting devs. Sure EGS gives devs more of a percentage of their sale, but they also don't offer a lot of the features that benefit consumers like the other stores do. Just seems crazy to me that all of the sudden out of nowhere steam is this big bad monopoly running the entire PC market and EGS is here to save the day.

The amount of sites controlling the gaming news can easily influence conversations on social media to get people talking about things they never cared about prior. It's insane. Many people are apathetic towards this no doubt, but they also would still buy off Steam if given the choice between the 2. When you take that choice away and those people have no other way to buy the game at launch. Then they can spin this narrative where they say "See gamers don't care about exclusivity!" It's infuriating to sit by and not have any say.

@Rachel I think what's worse about these news outlets having so much influence is how easily swayed people are. And I'm not even talking about just gaming at this point. I see people read a single article online, doesn't matter the source, about literally anything at all, and suddenly they're an expert on the subject when really they are just being manipulated into driving one company's specific agenda. Just blows my mind how people are completely oblivious to this type of marketing/manipulation.

It's no surprise. Most people tend to just "trust" people without any prior research or reason to. Hundreds of millions of people willingly put in all their real information to Facebook just because their friends did. They don't understand or in some cases care that they are doing more harm to people that want nothing to do with it. Because of Facebook controlling the ad market with google, we now have articles exactly like this and other outrage themed ones popping up nonstop during any controversy. Many gaming communities and other hobby interest sites have been shut down, now everyone only uses a handful of websites as opposed to many previously. They control all the Ad money so now they have to resort to cheap tactics to get hits. They dgaf about integrity when they have no decent amount of revenue sources.

I'm really curious exactly how much Epic (and M$, while we're on the topic) pays developers for this bullshyte. They're almost certainly going to sell two to three times fewer units than they would on Steam, GMG, Humble, (PS4, in M$'s case), etc., so the bribe they get from Epic must be colossal.

As for who's to blame, I'd blame all of those lame Fortnite players who spend real money on stupid crap like shirt colours. They're the sole reason why Epic has so much cash to throw around, essentially making them cancer.

Umm torrent Borderlands 3 then what's so hard. (RARBG FTW) I have them all torrented but not playing them LMAO. I mean F U Epic I only support Steam nothing else. I will be buying RAGE 2 and Doom Eternal (I will even upload a receipt as proof once the game releases, if you don't believe me :P. But, no buy until a review) because it's on Steam if it wasn't, torrent. I'm done with all these bullshit stores. I had Steam since launch and not going anywhere else. Quite the contrary... competition is absolute pro-consumer. You don't need to buy new hardware for this, you literally just have a different installer and store to deal with. The benefit hopefully will be Steam will work harder and do better by the devs and consumers. Epic Store also has a lot to do to better themselves in terms of what they do for consumers too.. This is not a one way door and my hopes are this actually competitive landscape truly forces these companies to do more than just offer sales.

I would think the competition in the long run be good, Steam will actually start improving and Valve will get off their lazy asses and start making games again like Half-Life and Portal.

But in the mean time, Epics store is so shit compared to Steam when it comes to missing features, anti-user reviews, etc.

If people really want to stick it to them then they should ONLY purchase it on steam and wait the six months. That will definitely tell them something. That will tell them to make it exclusive to Epic Store permanently.
