As for the article, Sony is over 30 million ahead. Even if Japan blew up from a missile or had nuclear meltdown or sank into the ocean from an earthquake, it would take years for Xbox to catch up. If of course there wasn't a world wide recession from the catastrophe.

Exactly. I love how some act like PS5 isn't going to be a thing and won't be launching in the next couple of years. I'll GLADLY continue to enjoy my Pro on my 1080p plasma TV until PS5 is released. Then I'll make my 4K upgrade. I'm not about to go out and buy a 500.00 3rd party box when we ALL know PS5 is on the "Horizon" (pun intended).

PlayStation is number 3 in the world in terms of gaming revenue, they have amassed a network of development teams that produce amazing games, and the PS4 is selling nearly 3 times as much as the Xbox One because of it. Xbox is actually the company that shows signs of being afraid and they expose themselves every time they attempt to deceive gamers and consumers with their "half-true" PR statements.

Division itself wouldn't be scared anyways. The people who work for it, or at least the execs may have to worry about their jobs, but that's about it. I can't imagine at this point that Sony execs are worried about their jobs, or worried that the future of the PS is in jeapordy in any way. Given how important PS has become to Sony, and how exceedingly well they've done the past 4 years seeing increased revenues and record profits, I'd imagine that they will have a lot of leeway to keep the train going until that ends.

MS OTOH seem to be throwing a hail mary with the X1X, and they aren't even doing terrible this gen in terms of sales or revenue, but they certainly have lost a lot of market share compared to last gen, and that is kind of a backward momentum for the original purpose of the Xbox when it was conceived by Gates back in the day.

Yes and no. the X1 isn't going to turn the tides with regards to number of systems sold. Sony has won this generation. What sony might need to worry about are their 3rd party royalties from games sales as people who play multiplats may opt for the X1X version. So theres some potential stolen sales with that regard but it's not going to be astronomical.

Nope. With a gap of up to 30 million consoles over the X1, that tide won't turn either. More power isn't going to cut it. To change the minds of the mainstream, you have to change the message. Adding lipstick to a pig displays a prettier pig. It's STILL a pig, though. For Microsoft, that pig is a lack of exclusive Xbox software. No matter how many teraflops you help the Xbox system achieve, without a way to keep the brand strong and competitive, it's a waste.

Outside of the US and UK, the Xbox is a very small brand. That's not changing because there are 12GB of GDDR5 in the Xbox One X vs the Pro's 8GB.

You forgot to mention that the PS4pro has an additional 1GB of DDR3 memory that is predominately going to be used for the operating system. Granted that leaves the XB1x with 3GB of memory more than the PS4pro. However, there are not that many games that would even come close to making use of 5GB of memory so 12GB is just overkill.

Play Anywhere only allows the PC gamer to receive more games so it's the PC market and PC consumer that benefits the most. Why would I want to spend $500 on a 6 teraflop console when I could use that $500 for new parts like a GTX 1080 which has 9 and works with a cheap 450W PSU? (power supply unit) I'm better off with that future proof direction.

PC gamers tend to be smarter, they know not to buy the new Xbox which is just a feature stripped PC. Steam Link streams games unto any TV, so there's that, too.

Anecdotally, the people who play multiplats (FIFA, Madden etc.) aren't the same people who own 4K TVs. Given thats the OneX's major selling point, I think they're onto a loser. Plus, those who have 4K TVs are probably multiple console owners and will probably have already invested in a PS4 Pro. For me, and probably for a lot of people, the difference between native 4K and checkerboard 4K is minimal.

The same arguments levelled at Sony about the PS4 Pro being a PS4.5 will now be levelled at MS with the OneX. The only difference is MS doesn't have the first party studios producing enough real quality AAA titles.

Sad to say, but the Xbox One X is going to fail and fail hard, IMO.

I wouldn't be surprised if those players are actually more inclined to have a 4K TV than even a gamer would have at this point in time. The reason being is that sports broadcasts are usually the first types of content which get streamed in higher fidelity formats. TV makers try to make that happen so they can promote their new thing during those events, and since people like to have the best quality for their little game get-togethers, they tend to buy the better stuff. Common indicators of this would be the surge in TV sales before the Superbowl.

Granted, I don't know if they'd be the same people that would purchase a $400-500 console, as they are more on the casual side of gaming, so it's kind of a juxtaposition of technologies.

hm I didn't think of that. That's actually a decent point. Although, I wonder how many of the playerbase actually have 4K tv's compared to those who don't. I would love to play the enhanced games on the Xbox One X but I can't afford to trade up for that or a 4K tv at this time.

You don't make sense, first of all for people to buy the third party version for the Xbox One X they would have to purchase the Xbox One X. The PS4 and PS4 Pro have sold over 60 millions worldwide, the vast majority of third party game sales will continue to be on the PS4 regardless of the X.
The X can not sell more third party versions unless it sells more consoles than the PS4. There will not be a high percentage of PS4 owners laying down $500 just to play third party games at higher resolutions.

Microsoft is proving two things this gen
1. They are not a gaming company. They did not combat Sony with software. They have not made a new AAA game for 6+ years. So why support them?

Sony makes, assists, donates resources all in gaming development while making games as well. There are a lot of things Sony has done to gameplay game developers move forward. They also, for a couple gens, helped shape console gaming.., that is a gaming company.

Microsoft... nothing besides come up with fancy terms that tries to hide they bought a game or franchise that bordered on monopolizing. Espically with their 360 push last gen.

I can guarantee they will make this console a push for exclusive software. Their pinch is the huge hit they took in the market and having the weakest console out of the two. There is absolutely no reason that exists that will bolster Microsoft in the gaming market... so I can guarantee you will hear "only possible on the x" within a year.

The PS4 slim is not a new console, it is a new form factor. The x-s is a boosted Xbox one with a new disc drive. Two completely different situations.

They made an updated revision to a console and full on upgrade after listening to gamers like you complain about power. Having three hardware revisions which are all compatible with each other just makes the brand stronger. The Pro was very lackluster so while they could do another, MS is already hitting the ground running with 4K and supported titles.

Why buy a PS4 anymore? It's the weakest for 3rd party and has a handful of exclusives that might be worth playing. Either get a PC or an XB1X. With mouse and keyboard support coming you may not even need a gaming PC anymore.

Lets face it. Sony already won this gen and it is coming to a close soon. Most of the people that still have not upgraded are casual/mass gamers that don't care much about 4k let alone native 4k. What they care most about is price and game selection. Switch has more exclusives than MS that people want to play at a much cheaper price. If casual want to play more multiplats then they will chose the PS4 over the X1X not because of the price but also Sony's exclusives.

The Switch + PS4 is only 100 extra than the X1X.

PS4 owners that are looking for a second console will most likely pick the switch as well not just because of the must have nintendo games but it is also cheaper. No point in buy a X1X as their second console that just play multiplats already on the PS4 at better resolution for 500 at the start.

Nah. Besides the obvious advantage for PS4 where it counts (the games), it's only been 4 years since this gen launched. The more casual gamer (Who make up the majority of console sales) generally aren't picking up the upgraded machines right now. Those are in the minority, especially on console, so it's not really going to challenge Sonys position.

PS has nothing to worry about. I game on XB and I'm very happy with my choice, but PS is obviously a great brand and is providing a great experience for 10's of millions of people... The more successful the X is, the better it will be for PS gamers. We know the PS 5 is coming within the next couple of years and will blow everyone away. Your wrong, at E3 Sony announces games for the PS4 in general, games for the PS4. Microsoft hardly use Xbox One on its own anymore, the treatment of the X is like a new console launch, the hype, the push, where is the Xbox One? From a sales perspective no not at all but from a technical standpoint yes indeed. Nothing MS will do can match Sony in sales this gen but what MS can do is restore lost faith by supporting the One X with content that will win back and gain customers for next gen. in a proper market, all competitors should always be scared. when you have a monopoly, you get that bs where one comapany dictates how things are, which usually ends up with the consumers being screwed over because of greed. i don't think there's been a case where a dominant company has lowered prices or offered more. it'd actually be nice if ms made a big comeback to narrow the gape, which i seriously doubt they will, but it'd balance things out.

During the PS1 and PS2 gen, Sony was certainly dominate, and they both lowered prices, and offered more throughout the whole gen. They followed this trend in the PS3 gen, although they didn't have dominance. PS4, I'd say they're offering more, and lowering prices, but for the prices part, I'd say they're going slower than in the past, but they came in at a reasonable price to start.

The thing about dominance is that to get it, the companies have to build their brand by offering more to build marketshare. Maybe not always content, like with MS dominance of the PC market where they offer more usability through the defacto software support the OS gets due to it's sheer user base.

Anyhow, in order to keep marketshare, these same companies have to appeal to as many markets as possible, thus price becomes a factor.

There really aren't many examples in the console space where dominance lead to arrogance. I don't even feel Sony was all that arrogant with the PS3, just some people wanted to see it that way. I'd say MS was extremely arrogant before this gen started, despite not actually having dominance.

So dominance has nothing to do with arrogance, or at least, to date, there are no really strong examples of what you're saying is or would be the case.

I think Sony is just doing their thing. While they stuck it to MS pretty hard at the start, since then, they've pretty much just showed their wares, and haven't really responded to anything that MS has done directly. They are letting their games do the talking, and even their more powerful option in the PS4P hasn't even been a major focus in their marketing compared to the utter onslaught of game reveals they've given over the past 2-3 years. Now we're getting to the point where they're delivering on all that, and it is pretty exciting to be a PS4 owner because of all the great things to play or look forward to.

It's a higher end console, but still lacking in critical CPU power, just like the PS4 Pro niche product Sony put out. Though Pro does help PSVR, so there's that.

Actually Pro and X1X are basically just the same middling power that PS4/XB1 was in 2013, except they were 2016 and now 2017.

PlayStation 4 was smashing Xbox one still is, the pro didn't cost Sony hardly anything to produce its a regular ps4 with and extra (cheap) GPU in it, the production line barely changed, Sony themselves told buyers, if you haven't got a 4k tv, don't buy one, the ps4 selling so well they don't care about the pro sales, it was forward thinking to counter Microsoft and extend product interest for 2 years, AMD have only one Mobile/APU in its road-map, and its a ryzen 5 with vega 56 combined called raven ridge, low power consumption and it will power the ps5, 4 cores/8 threads and 10.5 TF those are the official specs, google the road map and look, ps5 is closer than you think, it will launch latest fall 2019 (lots of analysts predict his,Shawn Layden even confirmed its been developed since ps4 launched) , ps4 will have been out 6 years then, Xbox one x will then be well behind again for the next 4-5 years, Microsoft should have delayed 12 months, got the same chip as the ps5 and gone toe to toe again, i worry for Microsoft when ps 5 launches and maybe has the 10.5 tf GPU, what do Microsoft do then? Xbox one X out 12-24 months and very under-powered against the ps5, revise the model? Dont think consumers would like a new more powerful Xbox one x after just 2 years.. In short, no Sony shouldn't be worried. Next years exclusives alone guarantee Sony more sales.

By Microsoft keeping the One X current Gen, they still are behind, despite the power of the box.
They should have made it the next system, because when SONY brings out the next system, it will still keep them in the lead for new games.
The only benefit of getting a One X right now is if you have a 4K TV, and trust me, nearly everyone doesn't own that kind of TV yet, and by the time those become more of the norm and affordable to the mainstream, PS5 will take advantage of it. THEY will have the most powerful console ever......and it will be the new generation. The ONLY console of that generation, and thus give them the early lead once again.

At this point in the gen, Sony could stop selling PS4, and so long as people kept buying the software, they could easily call it a successful generation. Obviously they'll keep selling the PS4, and the software, so no, I don't think they need to be worried.

The X1X won't affect them for the next gen, all it may do is affect the market share of this gen, but I doubt it's going to be significant enough to really make much of a difference.

Sony should only be worried about the long term if MS somehow becomes more relevant in the software production side of things, which is how they became relevant last gen, and managed to maintain a reasonable launch this gen despite the failed reveal.

Since MS doesnt show much indication of fixing things on the software side to remedy the criticisms or perceptions that they now have, next gen won't likely be a problem either, and more people may be hesitant to support MS next gen just because they have a strong launch line up. I'm sure no one is going to let people forget that MS had a good launch line up this gen, but then it became horrible starting three years in, just like they didn't let people forget that MS software became lax in the last few years of the 360.
