GameSpot: Spore Review

GameSpot writes: "Spore is an enjoyable game that pulls off an interesting balancing act. On one hand, it lets you create a creature and guide its maturation from a single cell to a galactic civilization through an unusual process of evolutionary development. Because the tools used to create and revise this creature are so robust and amusing, and each creation's charms are so irresistible, it's hard not to get attached to your digital alter ego. On the other hand, this intimacy is abandoned in the long, later portions of the game, when you lead your full-grown civilization in its quest for universal domination. The idea sounds ambitious, though Spore isn't as much a deep game as it is a broad one, culling elements from multiple genres and stripping them down to their simplest forms. By themselves, these elements aren't very remarkable; but within the context of a single, sprawling journey, they complement each other nicely and deliver a myriad of delights."

The Good:

* Intuitive and comprehensive customization tools
* Oozes charm at every turn
* Impressively broad scope
* Great audio and art design

The Bad

* Individual gameplay elements are extremely simple
* Early stages aren't very engaging

I was expecting at least 9 ...

Oh well I guess this wasnt in gamespots target group

kingnick5740d ago

But Spore has more scope than LBP and unless MM introduces something other than 2D platforming it'll get old really fast for a lot of people.

What's really needed is a fully 3D console game that supports user generated content but for the time being such ambitious games are restricted to PC because of the limited forms of input and tools available to consoles.

PiTCHBLaCK5739d ago

I'm getting both games, LBP and Spore, the
best of both worlds.

Tacki5739d ago (Edited 5739d ago )

I'd have to disagree. While I do think Spore looks to be a pretty nifty little title, I feel LittleBigPlanet has much more potential with its user-generated content.

The reason I say this is due to the way content is applied in these two games. Spore is essentally the same game no matter what you do. What I mean by this is that you're really only able to customize your creatures, ships etc. but the core of the game will always remain the same. It can only be played a set number of ways. Limited to what the developers want you to do. You're really only changing the 'skin' in game.

While LittleBigPlanet may offer you some ways in which to edit your character, the big thing here is creating your own levels. You're given all the tools the developers used to construct the game and you influence how the game is played. It's true that it's a platformer but it can be so much more. It doesn't even have to be a game. You could actually use the level editor to make virtual 'art' to show off. What sets it so much apart from other titles with level editors/creators is the fact an item is not tied down to a specific function. For example, Far Cry has a very deep level editor... but things like barrels really can't be much more than just barrels. Physics play a huge role in LittleBigPlanet and are a part of many objects in the game and the interactivity between objects is really something I've never done before. You're able to glue objects together, place stickers down, construct your own vehicles, enemies (with specific AI), set objectives, etc. I don't think even the developers themselves have stratched the surface of what's possible in the game. Users have created catapults, music levels, giant Godzilla-like beasts and much more! So in my opinion LittleBigPlanet has far more scope. Right off the bat you'll know what Spore can do, but with LittleBigPlanet you'll be discovering new ways for things to apply all the time! That's the reason why so many are so hyped for this game. There's really never been anything like it. Not taken to this level at least.

I'm not trying to say Spore is a bad title by any means. I think it looks very good for what it is... but I must say I could not agree with it having a greater scope than LittleBigPlanet.

Kenny_Roger5739d ago

I expect the same score for LBP

JoySticksFTW5739d ago

for anyone who says people will get bored of LBP quicker because it's 2D is waaaay off.

@Kingnick - Maybe YOU will get bored of LBP because it's 2D. But in a world in which games the scope of MGS4 and Spore are released, I still go back and play those "boring" 2D games - from SF Alpha/II/III, to Viewtiful Joe, to Mario on the DS, to MS Pac-man and Galaga from Namco collections, to old school Sonic from Sega/Sonic collection. No Joke

Besides, I'm all over that LBP movie editor. Did you forget about that? You can make your own movies using LBP characters and content and post them up to be viewed. Amateur screen-play writers.... Now's the time!

You all keep an eye out for "JoySticks Masterpiece Theatre"
:)

all those years, all those delays, for a 8 . damn

KBDuB5740d ago

An 8 is a bad thing? Wow..

PiTCHBLaCK5739d ago

8 is bad?, I Think 8 is dang good for
this kind of game.

cemelc5740d ago

Im begining to think this game is not as good as they show on those videos, i think im going to put this game on hold for a little while and check every review

- The Corrupt -5740d ago

People have really been waiting expectantly for this game, right? Yet you're going to turn it down and take a step back because it only got an 8? >_<

Fux4Bux5740d ago

Everyone was expecting greatness from this game. 8/10 these days is pretty much a mediocre score. I just can't enjoy games that come with a bunch of hyped up promises and end up limited and simplistic.

KBDuB5740d ago

You don't play games very often.. do you? If you aren't willing to play anything other than games that scored above an 8, then I feel sorry for you..

PiTCHBLaCK5739d ago

I Don't feel sorry for him, He is missing
out because of his choice to only play
games that scored higher then 8.

cemelc5739d ago

Or perhaps is just like me and cant afford every game that comes out monthly so he has to be a bit more selective, once he got all the nines goes to the 8 and so on.

The Playstation 3 Version of Spore will indeed outperform the Xbox 360 Version of the game

KBDuB5740d ago (Edited 5740d ago )

Uhm.. there is no PS3 or 360 version. Sorry to shoot down your trolling attempt, though.

At least try to make a better attempt at it next time..

The 10 Weirdest Video Games You Can Play Today

From Xfire: "Anyone who's played video games for a couple of years has stuck around long enough to stumble across a few weird ones. Some are even quite popular, which is all the more reason why you'll wonder what made the developers think about making such a game and why people are loving it, despite its weirdness anyway. Not all weird video games are head-scratches. Some are actually quite good."

BlackDoomAx1108d ago

The stick of truth is a must have for any South Park fans. I spent a good afternoon on Goat simulator, a rare real open world. I planned to try hatoful boyfriend since it was free on Ps Plus. Disco Elysium is on my radar since the final cut came out; as soon as there is a discount, i will take it. Like movies, i like weird games too :)

The 10 Best Video Games With Cut Content

From Xfire: "The four-hour director's cut known as Zack Snyder's Justice League has led to the discussion of movies in the past that might have fared a whole lot better had they been released to be more in line with the original vision of their creators. But, as it turns out, cut content doesn't just happen in movies. In fact, the act of cutting content before the release date happens arguably just as often in video games as it does in cinema."

anast1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

I can't believe they cut stuff from Skyrim. At release, it was a barebones game with a slight improvement in graphics.

-Foxtrot1114d ago

"Now, before we proceed, we'd like to say that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is one of the best video games ever made. It's not just a fine piece of gaming. It's one of the finest there is"

Really?

MGSV is easily the worst main line MGS game and not just because of cut story content, the open world is bare bones and there's hardly anything to do. It's repetitive, samey and is just lifeless. I appreciate the stealth mechanics, the animations and the way you can go with combat but it's not enough to keep me engaged the full way through.

Kojima should have done a twist and make the main chunk of the game a Metal Gear & Metal Gear 2 remake to bring the story full circle.

lsujester1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

Story issues aside, V has amazing gameplay. I'm not sure what you're wanting out of the world in terms of "things to do", it's all the great gameplay the series has always had. Useless filler that other open worlds have like collecting flags and petting horses would have added nothing to that game.

JRMVN1108d ago

THE TRUTH! I don't even know how that game gets praised. The previous ones were so much better.

Classic Games I'd Love To See Again.

While we have witnessed a lot of remakes, remasters and even sequels to games a decade old. There are still some gems that are close to my heart that are lost to me. Here are some classic games that I'd love to either see remakes or remasters of, or even a sequel on new hardware.
