Sony Insiders Refute Claim That PS4 Neo’s Development Started Because Of PSVR

Credible insiders debunk the rumor.

Of course an "insider" who might be a possible Sony employee would say this. But if the Neo is real and it seems like it is and plays VR games significantly better than why wouldn't it be a reason Neo was made?

iTechHeads2923d ago

AMD is to blame for this. They are pretty much forcing their new chips on both Sony and MS.
It's not a bad thing though.

darthv722923d ago

Could be part of their respected contracts. You figure to get the chips, both MS and Sony had to agree to certain terms over a set period of time. Could be that they are getting first dibs on new die shrinks as they happen and / or whatever is cost effective while staying compatible with other components.

game4funz2923d ago

This is the most unlikliest reason.

Kenshin_BATT0USAI2923d ago

@Darth
They don't get the new stuff. Mainly because the new stuff would drive the price of the hardware well over $500

madmonkey012923d ago

5pretty sure a similar scenario with nvidea forced the 360 to be rushed out.

donthate2923d ago

lol... now we stopped as low as to blame it on the suppliers of Sony/MS. Come one now, do we really need to stoop that low?

Stop being in denial! It is what it is, so deal with it.

SolidStoner2923d ago

Want it or not its coming....

and really, it isnt such a bad thing.. graphics in games will evolve faster.. thats a good thing!!!! what I mean is that developers will have more time and resources (because of better hardware), to play and test new things with games... just be patient, NEW better PS4 is a great news if you watch it from "evolution" perspective... and those already having ps4 like me should not be angree, it will soon be 3 years since its release, I think we should get new console every 5 years (and this is how much, really, a good game takes to develop). So every next gen would be really next gen.. this far its pure chaos.. (some random games gaining from it, some loosing, for no reason!) Its good that developers are already working with new PS4 neo!

Nightmar3Demom2923d ago

Sony & Microsoft can come up with approx. 60 million reasons why that is not an accurate statement

dcbronco2922d ago

ITech that was one of the most idiotic excuses ever to appear on the internet. And that is saying something.

AMD is in the business of making semi custom chips. They might be doing ten different designs in addition to their own. According to those rumors it was about avoiding $125-225 million in cost for a die shrink.

OK, die shrinks save money. A shrink of the size we're looking at in this case might be $30-40 per chip. But low balling it at $20 would be a savings $400 million on the Sony estimates of 20 million PS4s this year. That is the chip alone. Add small and less of everything else that goes into the console and you have several hundred million more reasons to know that rumor was nonsense.

Sony themselves said PSVR was a lesser VR. Neo would change that. And if it is code named Neo its purpose is clear.

I read the headline, saw the description, clicked, and saw it was gamingbolt. What a disappointment. Apparently to them, credible insiders are neogaf users and not actual interviewed sources. Was hoping for some interview or at least a tweet from some actual source, got nothing but more conjecture. Gamingbolt does how many interviews in a year to make up their click bait, yet they never bother to ask about this and if they do, no one bothers to confirm?

Anyhow, the neo may have been made due to the fabrication analysis that cropped up last week. That seems more sensible, and at least it was researched, with the only "sources" stipulating the costs involved.

Edit @ Rookie

Neo means new. Gaf is a mental capability scale of 0-100 with lower numbers indicate lower levels of function. The word new, in numbering indicates 0(starting point).

You put two and three together and you get neogaf is filled with a lot of new low functioning idiots who say a lot of things that often don't come true....ie new idiots.

Somehow that confirms HL3 is coming. Haven't figured out how yet though. That requires being able to function at 104-110.

Edit:

it's also worth mentioning, as far as nomenclature goes, neo also means a revised form of. So double meaning which happen to fit perhaps.

ShottyatLaw2923d ago

Gamingbolt citing to Gaf.

Run away...

_-EDMIX-_2923d ago

......Neo will make VR play better ,yes....it will make everything play better.

Play better, doesn't mean required to play. PSVR has its own processors to aid PS4, as to why its even a thing in the first place. People have already used PSVR and successfully told folks it works. As to why it has games being made for it. Soooooo sounds a bit stupid to say its the "reason Neo was made". lol

Then why would MS be making their own upgrade as well? Or did Nvida make the GTX 1080 JUST for Oculus? lol

Many reasons exist for why someone would want an upgrade bud. If the new PS4 becomes the standard, it would also mean the rest of PS4's bulk sales will come from upgraded skus ie like how PS3's sales are made up of MORE Slims and ultra slims then fats....

Sooooooo they made a new PS4 to sell a PSVR, even though the PS4 Neo itself will likely sell more then PSVR in its life time? Um......ok.....

Your post would make more sense if PS4 Neo was REQUIRED to play PSVR at all..

Eonjay2923d ago

First, I wouldn't give any credence to an 'insider'. Secondly, of course a more powerful PS4 will play everything better. This however doesn't mean that VR doesn't work on the regular PS4. Because we already know it does. Thats like saying, well, they made a new console to play gaming content better. Well, what is the point of making a new console...

Sunny_D2923d ago

Well, then why is there an xbox scorpio being made when MS has yet to set up a viable VR platform for the console. All we know is a rumor of them trying to get Oculus Rift to be on their system.

senorfartcushion2923d ago

And just this morning, the news of the VR running like balls was outed by an insider.

Sparta072923d ago

@ red, just cause it's an "insider" doesn't mean it's a sony employee.

maniacmayhem2923d ago

From the article:

***(many have assumed Demonite to be a Sony employee at Neogaf) so they may be right once again.***

Which is why Red said:

***Of course an "insider" who might be a possible Sony employee would say this.***

So no where does anyone confirm for certain that it's a Sony employee. It helps to read things before you start to go in.

Sparta072923d ago

@ maniac, keyword "assume" as in not sure, don't know. I can read. Can you?
Don't understand your argument anyway. Just stating just cause it's an insider doesn't mean it's a Sony employee. Then you quote the article saying the same shit I said. Lol
You're ridiculous and a tard. Please F off.

maniacmayhem2922d ago

I guess I have to explain it to you some more since understanding is a slow process for you.

You see both the article and Red never said that it *was* an employee, the article assumes and Red says *might* and "possible*. So you see, telling Red that it doesn't mean it's a sony employee is irrelevant because both statements never said it was a fact.

Do you understand this now, or do i need to draw it out in comic form with BAM, BOOM and POW in bright purple letters?

OB1Biker2923d ago (Edited 2923d ago )

Ah of course you think an unknown source is right saying PSVR runs terrible on PS4 and THAT Is why Neo is a thing?
It's not like Neo would exist if PSVR was running properly on PS4 like EVERYONE has been saying for a year or so, right?

mzupeman2923d ago

It's all a PR game at this point. But, let's be honest... when even the 970 on a PC is what they consider minimal for VR, the PS4 as it is can't produce the quality experience VR really needs to be without making some concessions.

And, from what I've heard, Sony were deliberately talking about a shorter generation, and even discussing a more powerful piece of hardware not too late in the generation, before the PS4 was even released.

Well that was quick, and yet they didn't debunk the Neo itself. For everyone who still says the Neo is just a rumor, and Sony doesn't debunk it because they don't respond to rumors... when a rumor is off base and potentially damaging, it will get debunked, even if it's done through unofficial channels like this. There's no way the Neo rumors would have persisted this long if there wasn't truth to them

donthate2923d ago

An insider told me, it is very real and known for over a year now by many Sony employees. It is real!

joeorc2923d ago

And what if this is being made for the Hometheatre market instead? Like the PSX was in Japan & Asia?

I mean all we heard is this has just has to be made for the game console market.. They talk about no exclusives..so why would that not be for Hometheatre instead. Where the main target is 4K..and if its a Ultra Blu-Ray player support..it would further fit into the Home theater market.
Many are just assuming its going to be made for the console market, when Sony in the past has supported the Hometheatre market along side the game console market.

I mean the leak documents did not talk about PSVR..but if you think about it a system like the neo would be pretty good for the Hometheatre market. All this does in the console market I'd anger and have more divisiveness media coverage of this.

DopeTech2923d ago

'Sony' insiders debunking the rumors? Well of course they must debunk that LOL!

iTechHeads2923d ago

Sony insiders doesn't exactly mean Sony employees.

rainslacker2923d ago (Edited 2923d ago )

In this case, it means they are just forum goers who supposedly have access to actual Sony employees based on gaf users believing so, or people who have access to those employees.

Rearden2923d ago

Yeah, no shit. You can't expect the PS4 to push 90 fps at 1080p for VR and look remotely good.

Christopher2923d ago

It only needs to push 60fps x 2 (two different screens), but, yeah, the games aren't going to look like the games we play on PS4/XBO now. That's just a given. Same as how most good looking games on PC VR require pretty beefy specs compared to normal.

JackVagina2923d ago (Edited 2923d ago )

Good thing it doesn't need 90fps then LUL.

PSVR has a 120hz display and 90% of PSVR games will run at 60fps reprojected to 120fps. London Heist,RIGS,Battlezone and EVE:Valkyrie are the most out there demos at public/private events right now and I've read 100s of impressions not once has anyone complained about this. The reprojection system works very well.

10 Biggest Xbox Mistakes of All Time (So Far)

The Xbox brand has done a lot of good over the years, but their various blunders are pretty wild to look back on in their magnitude.

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies2d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX3d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody3d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

Cacabunga3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_3d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga3d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie1d 15h ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly3d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga2d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit2d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_3d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff21833d ago (Edited 3d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies3d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.
