The gaming industry has really come a long way with a lot of improvements and jaw breaking exploits. Some developers and publishers are pushing the boundaries of the concept of gaming while others have stagnated it, leaving a once powerful game franchise to rot. The list contains five game franchise that were once so great, but now not so great. They have literally been milked to death!

There are too many Ass Creed games. I liked ACII a lot, but there's no way I'm buying and spending the time on seemingly 2 games a year, every year, from the same franchise. It's been watered-down so much that I have no interest in the franchise anymore.

its really simple, lots and lots of people continue to buy them every chance they get. so they must like it, if the writer doesnt, the simplest solution is to not play that game and pretend it doesnt exist.

Wow, a level easy article. Took 5 popular franchises and instead of recommending how they can be fixed, it brags why they should "die" when they sell really good numbers. Every of those franchises has a lot to give once some corpo squares regain their minds back.

How about making a game and with a season pass for an example $100. With that amount u should get alot of dlc contents like gta 5. But the update are free but u gotta earn them in game cash or use real money to earn it quicker.

Depends on if there's actual honest effort going into them, or if they're exploiting and lingering on past, established, reputation.

Capcom putting out SFV like they did qualifies as the latter.

Final Fantasy needs to die? That is pretty much the premier JRPG in the world. I know gamers who don't touch RPG games but do play Final Fantasy games.

Even though I find this Street Fighter lack luster in terms of roster (not to mention lack of content) no way should that series die. I wouldn't mind Capcom maybe focusing on some of their other fighters and giving those the same attention they give SF (and MvC) but no way should SF die.

RE needs a reboot, plain and simple. I think Capcom has gone way over board and they need to pull it back. Alone in a mansion with monsters trying to kill you. RE 6 felt like a Hollywood blockbuster with CoD thrown in because kids like guns.

The rest on the list...I wouldn't lose any sleep if those died.

At this point the series lacks player involvement. Is focused on fx rather than story.

That its well recognized, is seen as being unable to do wrong, is the exact point and problem.

Story pacing and gameplay have been an issue since the franchise moved off the SNES, became a notifiable with FF8, and again hit the fan with FF13. FF15 might be a new start, yet at the same time in this "games as services" era there's less value in RPGs as stories and more as social events.

Player fatigue means that people are just tired of the series. The division around FF13 was more about how people were disappointed with the direction the series went within that one particular installment...or three.

However, the players for the most part, seem to be eagerly anticipating the FF7 remake, and FFXV. The fact that they were eagerly anticipating FFXV when it was still VS13 is a direct contradiction that people were getting tired of the franchise. They just wanted a better FF game.

Bit harsh, really. I think it's a natural process of a long-standing franchise to hit a wall and then break through. Take Tomb Raider for example. I'd hate to see any 'franchise die', I would much rather see them bounce back.

If you're one of the people who get suckered into buying it each year, play it once and then hate yourself for it then it's on you!

I will Admit Capcom Over did it with Street Fighter 4, they released so many different versions of it I lost count.

Assassins Creed, I dont feel it needs to die but I feel that Ubisoft should probably put it on hold for a few years. Then come back strong AND GLITCH FREE!!!! Id say the same for Resident Evil, since 4 they have all been Call of Duty esk action games although 6 tried to break this up abit.

Nothing to say about Final Fantasy and I think we all know Call of Duty will never die. Not as long as people keep buying it every year. Black Ops 2 was the last one I bought.

This article is poor written and twisting truths to back up their choices. Yes, there is 17 Assassins Creed games but only 9 of them are AAA games.

Square went out of their way to fix FF XIV and made it one of the biggest MMORPG's going. Not bad for a DOA product.

Call of Duty 2+4 aren't the only good games. His arrogance is irritating. I'd guess 2,4,5,6,7 were all good worthwhile games. but it definitely gets patchy from there on.

Cod 2,4,5,6,7,9, and 12 were all great games with some having issues...but nothing that says dead franchise. Yes Ghosts and AW were awful and the least played in the franchise, but Blops 3 is solid. Activision simply needs to allow a nice break in between IW and Treyarch games. I'd throw out Sledgehammer all together as they're responsible for the crap maps in mw3 as well as the mess that was AW.

AC should call it a day after they give fans a game based in Japan or China...and the future. That's all there is left to the franchise. 2 more games with 2 years in between, then focus on making PoP or Watchdogs better games.

SF simply needed another 6 months to cook. It's still the premier fighter. I smell butthurt over the Sony deal at play here. The different editions have been apart of the franchise since the beginning. It's not gonna change.

Resident Evil needs to go back to its roots. Remake 2 and 3 and rediscover what made the franchise great. Throw out the controls and over the shoulder view and take it back to old school difficulty. Take it back to when running was always a solid tactic and occasionally you're only choice instead of knocking off a zombie head with a street fighter kick.

Franchises shouldn't die simply because you're tired of them. They should die when they start to ruin a legacy like Tony Hawk.

In Resident Evil i wouldn't mind it going back to the 1 & 2 ammo saving and decision making not ammo popping up after you kill an enemy but it also would be nice to have where you could do a punch or a kick to get outta a jam when you out/low on ammo instead of helplessly standing there getting knawed to death.. A few minor touches but staying true to survival horror which what made Resident Evil RESIDENT EVIL.

Die? No. Many 10 year old + franchises just don't do a good job with balancing innovation and respecting the roots of the franchise.

Bad Examples:
RE 5 and 6 away from horror to more action
Zelda: Most games after majora don't break the OoT template
Any sports game: Same game, new year
Banjo Nuts and Bolts: No/little platforming = unhappy fans
God of War: GoW I: Slashy slashy kill kill. GoW II: Slashy slashy kill kill. GoW III: Slashy slashy kill kill.

Good Examples:
Fire Emblem (modes and features)
Pokemon (battle styles and types)
Tomb Raider (action and exploration elements)

This post is like people complaining about Far Cry Primal and its game engine. I don't see no problem with two or more games sharing the same engine. It's always better for us to have more titles, and it's a whole different game, the mechanics might be similar, but how can it be bad? No one is forced to buy, and it offers a whole lot of fun.

It's like the "annual" Assassins Creed paradox. People think they take an year of rush for each title, but we've seen that different studios sometimes are making different games for 2 to 3 years and just because it's by the same publisher they rage about it. I am not fading away the shame lived by AC unity's launch, but I think they are learning from that. Driveclub was another unsuccesful launch that lacked some polishment, or in fair words: Time. I bought it and I'm glad the team had the balls to fix the game and deliver a very good racing experience. And they still do.

Final Fantasy died with Final Fantasy XII. It could continue with its great stories, magics, summons and so on. But no, let's make a sort of action RPG, completely unrelated with the original and with some reference, people will like it anyway and will buy it anyway.

It didn't need to die, but it happened. At least, there's an exception, Final Fantasy XIV: ARR, sadly online only and with monthly fees (but i love that game).

AC doesn't need to die but it must change:
1) No new release (or releases) every year. Not enough time to make a decent AC with real changings and new original mechanics (no copy/paste)
2) More variety. Some of the chapters were released just because "we must release it, who cared if it's full of bugs, there's a deadline to respect!! A deadline invented by us, because we like money... and as soon as possible". They didn't really introduced anything new, or at least not something that could be in a $9.99 DLC as well.
3) Spend more time with alpha and beta testing and give, for once, a complete working product without patches and so on

For the rest, why do they have to die, if people like them and keep buying them? It would be stupid to stop just because there are too many games of that franchise already. If it works, why stop it?

FFXII may not be entirely turn-based, but it's not an ARPG either, as waiting for your attack bar to fill up doesn't translate to active combat. It's also based on FFT, which is why it was so different. Don't like it? Ok, but don't blame the series itself, as it was the Team Ivalice that makes all of the Tactics games that made XII. AFTER fans said they would support a AAA game by them.

Personally, I grew into it over countless hours. The story was great (even if two characters were utterly useless), the bounty hunting and rare creatures should be in more games, and the plethora of optional bosses were quite difficult.
