This article is way too early.and a lot of speculation.companies draw up next gen ideas before their next one even drops. That's just industry standard thinking.

But I feel articles like these are like talking about slim models of consoles.if you place confusion and doubt in people's minds, maybe they won't go out and buy that current product.which is an attempt to slows sales.

"It just might come sooner than you think...."

No it won't.How about concentrating on TODAY.it's only been 2 years already.enjoy what you have.consoles aren't like weekly trade-ins at GameStop for ADD gamers looking for that next fix because they're bored.these consoles will be on the market for a very long time.

Developers need to make back their investment from lengthy development times because it costs millions to make games.just look at how many developers closed up shop last gen or had to merge just to survive.

play in the now and stop worrying about later.

never4get3061d ago

Console have moved to x86 architecture, average development time hasn't come down. Unreal 4, Unity 5, Cryengine 3, with all their graphics, failed to cut game development time on x86 architecture.

nitus103060d ago

It really does not matter what the architecture is as long as the developers have the appropriate tools. It does get harder when developers who are "pushing the envelope" start programming to the metal since you need to have a more detailed understanding of the hardware.

What takes time is actually the planning that goes into making the game. The actual implementation and testing while very important are secondary.

LightofDarkness3060d ago (Edited 3060d ago )

@never4get: you are completely ignoring the fact that AAA development in the current gen requires vastly more care and attention than the previous generation. The art assets have to be 4 times as detailed, the games are more open-ended and persistent, which introduces an exponential increase in the number of potential errors. The jump in visual fidelity, while seemingly smaller, requires much more processing power relative to the previous generation and a similar amount more development time. Creating high quality art assets for a modern AAA game is a much more time consuming process than before. The new engines do their best to speed along productivity and aid developers in going from concept to result; if anything, it's a testament to their design that game development times haven't ballooned relative to both the increase in team sizes and costs this gen.

I have a feeling you know much less about these engines than you'd have people believe. Especially when you use such technical language as "... with all their graphics..."

never4get3060d ago

@LightofDarkness
Indies, Small Budget Games, 2-3 years development time? No, Please. Thanks.

* Whatculture is a terrible site that basically just makes things up and doesn't know much about video games.

deathtok3060d ago

You're very right!

For that matter... anyone that wraps-up their article theorizing the mobile take over of the gaming market instantly loses credibility.

donwel3060d ago

It's whatculture mate, typical clickbait site.
I could've sworn they'd been banned from here

ab5olut10n3060d ago

Were that true I don't believe pozzle would still be a top 5 contributor. Dude (or girl) loves that site. I gave ocelot more credit than this.

PANDAB3060d ago

I definitely believe that it's too early as well but I can't help wondering what the future will be like- imagining all the tech possibilities is always exciting to me.

And if I may cast some speculation.... I hope the next round of consoles will give a pluggable option of increasing graphics capabilities like what we are seeing at CES now- machines that are capable on their own but with hard core options. Type-c usb /thunderbolt is looking to stir the industry real good

TWB3060d ago

They arent even rumors, just some ridiculous speculations that arent even compatible with each other.

USMC_POLICE3061d ago

Can I just enjoy my PS4 and XB1 for a few more years before we even start thinking about next generation.

MegaRay3061d ago (Edited 3061d ago )

I agree. Most developers havent even launch their first game in current systems and people calling for next generation already.

Tho, it would be funny if we saw a comment saying "meh this game look like a PS4 game" lol

Bobafret3061d ago

Oh I wonder why you got a few disagrees. You shouldn't have mentioned the X1 lol.

USMC_POLICE3060d ago

Lol I guess so, it's not my fault Sony has no simulation racing games while Xbox has 2, I had to have an Xbox and crackdown need that, I also enjoy having a gaming pc.

G20WLY3060d ago

Well I agreed with him, it's too soon, but I can see how an impatient few might be excited for any hint at what could come next. Perhaps that's where those disagrees came from? You can't stir up trouble with that though, can you.. ;/

As for no racing sims on PS4, I agree in that I can't wait for GT this year, but Project Cars is out and is actually a pretty good stop gap.

indyman77773060d ago

Yeah I agree, except Nintendo is excused because they have not introduced the NX yet. But Everyone super speculating. I mean the article even admitted that they would START to think about the next one soon. Why are they making these speculations so early.

rainslacker3060d ago (Edited 3060d ago )

Yep, I do so with no problem.:)

I love to speculate about what's to come, but 2 years in, I'm not going to be too premature about it, because a lot can happen in 3-4 years. I'm also not going to just skip out on the next 3-4 years because another console may be released then, and none of the massive rumors listed are need to know, nor should any of them be of any consideration at the current time for this gen.

Most of these rumors aren't even rumors anyhow, they're just people assuming things because they read from someone else who is much smarter than they are, that something is going to be trendy in 3-4 years.

The moment when I can't physically play games on a console if given the choice is the moment when I stop buying games. I'll just wait until the console is modded and then pirate everything. Fuck digital monopolies.

sammarshall1023061d ago

I agree. If the next consoles go digital only then I'm done with video games

Summons753061d ago

They will never go digital only unless they find a way to distribute the consoles outside of major retailers. Stores like Gamestop, Walmart, Best Buy really push consoles because they have ways of making a profit off them such as used games. Sony, MS, Nintendo are too afraid to undercut them because the stores could easily turn around and either not push or care about them or not sell them at all. It's the same reason why digital games aren't cheaper like they should be, they are afraid to undercut stores and have them hit back. We heard for years how physical copies are too expensive and if we go digital it would be cheaper but now we have digital releasing at the same price as physical, hardly ever getting a price cut (unlike stores every few months) and hardly getting sales (unlike stores having them every week). It's much cheaper to buy physical than digital. Steam doesn't have this problem since physical PC games, while still around, aren't reliant on sales and stores barely have them in stock if they are even released physically.

emad-E-three3061d ago

I'm one of those people that want their gaming console to be piracy free just because I want my favourite devs to get the money for their great games and keep on making more (less money to dev = unhealthy industry) and well it is stealing others' hard work basically it's crime (some will disagree) BUT!...IF the next gen will be digital only or always on then Hello piracy! Digital only future will mean our games will be on the hands of the publishers and our games aren't really ours! You pay 60 or even 70 USD to play a game for a certain amount of time before the publishers pull the switch off (game servers) more like a day one renting! Not gonna support it.

But honestly don't believe Sony (at least) will do a digital only platform. Though still early.

Ra3v3r3060d ago

This old chestnut again - digital only future will mean our games will be in the hands of the publishers and our games aren't really ours...

You do realise that you're paying $60-70 for a license and a piece of plastic don't you? We don't own the game we own the media it's printed on and that's it. However, I do understand the sentiment - if it's digital they can turn it off at any time and prevent or restrict access to said content and it's not ideal but that's life. What happens when the disc stops working? Same thing and more likely due to a faulty drive ruining the disc or someone scratching It.

Same thing happens when you move to a new system if you sell the old compatible hardware - boom, your media is useless.

I'm sitting here with an NES and an original MasterSystem from 30 years ago and guess what, not all of my original media works on them no matter how much I've cared for them.

rainslacker3060d ago

I wouldn't resort to piracy myself. I just wouldn't participate in new games unless they were pretty cheap. To me, it would be more like how I handle Blu-Ray rentals now. If I feel like watching a movie, I'll go to Red Box and get a couple. Cheap, easy, and I'm not losing much by not purchasing the actual movie.

I'm not super frugal with my money, but I don't just throw it away for entertainment like games which I like to have some ownership of, and don't like the thought that the thousands of dollars I spend every year on games can be removed from my use at any time, for any reason...even if it's something arbitrary, like when MS made it impossible to use my hotmail account because I forgot my password and despite proving beyond a doubt I am who I claim to be, have never had access to since..or when a publisher decides to remove a game because of some licensing issue, and in the process even makes it impossible to download, so because of some companies licensing issue, I'm stripped of my legally purchased software.

rainslacker3060d ago

@Ra3

Yes, that is technically correct. However, we are free to sell both the piece of media with the content on it, as well as the license that is attached to it, thus we have ownership. We don't have ownership of the actual content, so we can't do whatever we want with it, but once we sell it, the content goes along with it.

Technically, if the disc stops working, which does happen in some cases with older CD games...or damaged games, then legally, we are entitled to have a backup which can be used with our license. However, we are not free to sell that backup, because it is not included in the terms of the license. With console games, while it's not illegal to play back ups, the courts ruled that the console makers aren't obligated to provide us a way to actually play that software because the problem of piracy far outweighed the pros for the consumer. Basically, the courts saw through all the BS pirates spew forth, thus harming consumers.

That being said, I have tons of retro games. Less than 1/2% probably don't work. That has nothing to do with digital though. Those physical formats are much more likely to work long after you no longer have access to any digitally purchased content(on consoles at least)

stiggs3060d ago

@ShinnosukeRFD

"when I can't physically play games on a console ...I'll just wait until the console is modded and then pirate everything."

I'll wager anything that you would pirate disc based games on current consoles if that option was available.

showtimefolks3060d ago

Shinn

Don't believe these people who talk about digital only. There is absolutely no chance either ms or Sony would do something that stupid

Net speeds

Xbox live and psn down times

Are the 2 biggest reasons

Also retailers like gamestop and best buy would not sell consoles at all than. Remember how pissed off wee gamestop executives. Gamestop even sent out an email to all its registered members letting them know of Xbox one and its drm policies

Physical gaming media isn't going anywhere anytime soon

TripleCs3060d ago

@Summon75

I doubt Microsoft or Sony is stupid enough to go all digital next generation especially after the always online, used game DRM fiasco that happened this generation.

I also definitely don't think Sony is going all digital next gen since they're working with Panasonic on a new disc format and I assume that new disc format will be used in the PlayStation 5 so based on that info I highly doubt it.

nucky643061d ago

no discs means I'm through with gaming.

The_Devil_Hunter3060d ago

Every time I mention the same thing I get attacked of not being a real gamer or what have you but it's true, if physical is gone then I don't know if I could continue to be a gamer. I can't stand digital games. Just the other day when Sony had their servers under maintenance I was trying to play wolfenstein and couldn't because I wasn't playing it on my primary PS4 that was in the living room. I was sick and wanted to game in my room. Again I understand lots of younger gamers such as those who are younger than 15-18 like their games digital don't care about physical copies but I still like the idea of holding it in my hand and putting it on my shelf. I don't have a problem getting up and switching discs.

nucky643060d ago

not a real gamer? that makes no sense. there are valid reasons to not like digital-only gaming. one, I live in a rural area and don't have the internet speed for it. two, I like to resell games after I've had them for a while.
I do buy games like journey, super stardust and resogun - gonna buy the witness later this month - but as far as the big 50 gig games - I want a physical copy.
and that doesn't make me (or you) any less of a gamer.

jwillj2k43060d ago

I actually like the convenience of having a digital copy. As long as I have access to my merchandise 24/7 it's easier and has a better value add than a physical disk. I also play over the network when I am not home, something I can't do with hard copies.

rainslacker3060d ago (Edited 3060d ago )

Nothing wrong with digital or anything, but I'm not going to pay a lot for what I consider an extended rental. The way I buy games, I'd be throwing away around $5K a year for something I don't own.

I don't mind digital at all if the prices are cheap enough, because at least at that point, if I get a chance to play the game, then I've gotten my moneys worth, and if I can't resell it, or it's stripped from the service for some reason, I haven't lost out on much but likely got enough enjoyment out of it to justify my purchase.

I think about around September of last year. I thinned out some of my collection, hundreds of games. Put about 10K in my bank from it, and while I probably spent more than that over the course of many years, If I had purchased all those games digitally at that price, it's worth in monetary terms would have been exactly zero dollars. That's pretty significant to me, because one can do a lot with 10K...like pay off one's car, or put a down payment on a house, or buy more games.

nitus103060d ago (Edited 3060d ago )

From personal experience digital games are initially cheaper than the same game on media, however over time the game that is on media drops in price much faster than the digital copy.

In addition you can lend or even give a game that is on media to a friend and while it is possible to do that with some digital games the shear act of downloading it on to a friends console is off putting.

Then there is the second hand game which if it's on BluRay it is almost impossible to scratch this media, although I did have one instance where the previous owner nicked the top printed surface and rendered the disk unplayable, fortunately it was replaced.

DVD's and CD's are much more easier to scratch however if the owner takes care they will last for many years.

10 Biggest Xbox Mistakes of All Time (So Far)

The Xbox brand has done a lot of good over the years, but their various blunders are pretty wild to look back on in their magnitude.

piroh4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies2d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX3d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody3d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

Cacabunga3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_3d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga3d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie1d 15h ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly2d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga2d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit2d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_3d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff21833d ago (Edited 3d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies3d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.
