Sony Preparing New Motion Controller For PS3?

Minute Warning, impressions from Nintendo's press event, a Fallout 3 appreciation festival, and Microsoft's rumoured motion controller and, also, Shane Bettenhausen announcing Sony's own rumoured controller that will have "transforming multiple configurations" that Call of Duty 5 and the highly anticipated Resistance 2 will have implementation for.

I think I'll wait a few months before buying a Dual Shock 3 just to get this confirmed to be true or untrue because, the negative to this story is that the DS3 just being released, the idea of another controller being released later in the year seems kinda stupid. The DS3 should have been launched with the console last year but Sony weren't able to for legal reasons, so with rumblings of a new exciting peripheral like this rumoured controller, should have come in place of this now released DS3. It's all happening with bad timing and this will probably lead to criticism that will over-shadow any possible confirmation that this new controller is coming; there'll be some with three different controllers!

Anyway, this sounds interesting - I wonder what he meant by "transforming multiple configurations".

It should be very easy for MS and Sony to copy the Wii controller and more importantly the Wii games. I mean really, the most popular Wii game is Wii Sports, something Sony and MS can create very easily.

Wii Fit also seems pretty popular in Japan but I don't it will reach Wii Sports, Pokemon or Nintendog heights.

And if it was true in any way, the new controller would likely come package with a specific game as an teaser for console owners to switch. That's what I'd do anyway.

As for Pseye, it will have a place in the future but unlikely as the main controller. Did someone say rumble? How do you do that with a Pseye? Hmmmmmmmmmm...?

Sounds interesting, the only reason Sony is doing this is to compete with the Wii market and the soon-to-be 360 market, Sony need to have something out to compete if the 360 Newton controller is a success.

The new motion controller might be that infa-red tech that supposingly the the new PSeye can track.

The eye focuses just on the "item" The camera its self doesn't move just if players stay within the the visual radius it will track the X and Y and Z planes of travel.

Unfortunately this idea has been on Sony's drawing board since the first ps2 camera. This story definitely deserves the label Rumor.

Positives, the item would be like a Wii-mote.
The Negative thing would be it would detect motion but no rumble. More than 2 people couldn't player either due to the taxing limitations and
errors (ps2 days).

Um, the sad thing Microsoft is riding on some one other entities success (see Nintendo), Sixaxis or MOTION CONTROL was implemented around the same time of Wii Launch, so yeah.. Good old Sony consumers. They change their mind with what Sony tells them. Rumble was last gen in 06 but here on 08 it is THE thing to have. You also have to love that Sony shows a completely different controller for the PS3 when Nintendo showed off the Wii remote and these guys still think Sony didnt get the idea for the Sixaxis from the huge interest in the Wii remote. It is obvious enough for a 6 year old to see but not this group of people.Also you are right, some of the Sony group of gamers did knock MS when they heard the rumors of a Wii remote type controller from MS. Not all of them of course but more than will admit to it now. They'll probably believe Sony when they say they had it planned all along for years now to release this new controller. Heck one guy that replied to you is already making excuses for how it has nothing to do with the Wii remote at all. Just a redesign.. If the sixaxis is so great why redesign it? If it has nothing to do with the Wii remote why are controllers moving in that direction?

They're redesigning the way the sixaxis works, I don't know if you know genius but the sixaxis is MOTION SENSITIVE. Having already acquired the technology that have a means behind the controller, unlike Microsoft that jumps on the bandwagon because two of there competitors already have this technology implemented in there designs.

By the way the gyration is a open patent, meaning Nintendo isn't the patent holder, Sony and Nintendo jumped on the opportunity, Nintendo happened to make a better design (obviously).

Sixaxis already having motion sensing redesigning a controller specifically built for games that are heavy on motion sensing would be a good business move and accommodate the motion sensing hungry crowd, and should I have to reiterate this point once more SONY and NINTENDO BOTH HAVE IT. Microsoft if they do decide to forward the "Newton" they're just copying trend because the lack of sales, keeping the installment base is probably in there best interest inside the Xbox camp.

The difference is redesigning something to better suit the need, and then theres making something to follow commercial trend (see Microsoft).

Also yes. Sony and Microsoft need to get a share of the motion-sensory casual gamers. Think about it... all these third-party games are coming out for the Wii because its popular, and they're easy to make. So why not port them to the other two systems for even more profit? Lack of motion controls.
I have no desire to see this become a big thing for the ps3 and 360, but it seems pretty obvious that they could very easily cut wii exclusives in half, undermine its success, pick up more casual game sales and make third-partys happy all in one move.

Ideally, Sony's best move is to make this motion control scheme work for the ps3 AND the ps2. that way, the much cheaper ps2 will snap up a lot of the casual game market, third-partys will have much less difficulty programming for it, and once again, it will make the wii seems last-gen. You could argue that this would hurt ps3 sales, but its pretty obvious the motion-sensing crowd is a much different audience, and with this being the break-out year for the ps3, it won't make much difference.

According to my latest Game Reactor issue under the rumour section, Sony are said to be working on a new controller. The controller will feature a headphone jack and also a new button, but they didn't mention anything about motion sensing.

And if this is actually true, I think it would be great, because you have that option to *choose.

Sony really needs to change the entire design and set-up of their control pads.
Too many things are wrong, specifically the *size as in kid size - that's why the buttons and sticks are all bunched-up.
And then there is the matter of L2/R2 triggers facing on the wrong side as well, that's why we encounter slippage in using them.

I am hoping if this rumour is correct that the next control pad will be a more better and ergonomically hand friendly "perfect motion control and rumble feature kept-in" unit.

A Wii-mote controller does not mean casual only games. It's only a controller.

CoD4, Halo3, Resident Evil, NG2, MGS4, GTA4, R2, GeoW2, Gow2 etc can all be written to fully utilized the features of a Wii-mote-like CONTROLLER....C.O.N.T.R.O.L.L. E.R....if it was available for the xbox360 or Ps3.

Developers decide what type of game they make - whether kiddie or Hardcore.

Developers make use of the CONTROLLER available to them - whether motion or not.

Its tacked on or has crappy controls in most other wii games....even smash brotha brawl....you really need a regular joystick for fighting games....even mario galaxy is wierd controlling using the wiimote-numchuck..also nintendo needs to upgrade their design...that wired numchuck is crappy...the wire gets into the way...i know there is a third party adapter to get it wireless...but that is $30 for each wii mote....so why is everybody up in arms about Sony or even microsoft releasing a new or extra motion controller....you will need this and the dual shock 3....a new wii mote type controler would work in a wiisports type game on the PS3.....this is what they are doing it for....package it in a game that has 20 times more minigames than any wii minigame package...and update them with downloadable content..sell the whole package with the new controller for $59...

...personally I think sony should leave the Wii alone. I like sony but I think that sony shouln't have to do what microsoft is doing. Microsoft is doing it out of desparation. Sony is not in desperation and therefor don't need for a new motion-controlled hardware. The PS Eye is fine enough they should use that instead.
