PlayDevil: Alan Wake DLC - The Signal Review

After our exclusive and very in depth interview with one of the writers' of the smash hit "Alan Wake," we offer you today our in depth review of the first DLC of Alan Wake named "The Signal".

Is it worth 560 MS points?

Here's a snip:

Unlike the majority of the disk game, ‘The Signal’ takes place in Alan’s mind as he struggles to free himself from the evil of the town. It is a shift that leads to far more abstraction within the game world, allowing the action to jump randomly between different areas of the original game world. It leads to a faster pace of play that lends itself well to the urgency of the chapter’s story as Alan follows the symbolic GPS signal of his imaginary mobile phone to lead him out of his nightmares.

Anybody played this already and looking forward to "The Writer" ?

coolbeans5012d ago (Edited 5012d ago )

I posted a review of it a month ago. I'm looking forward to The Writer as well. Thankfully, the DLC has a main storyline undertone to it even though it's a "Special Feature".

My favorite 360 exclusive hands down. The ambiance from the framed narrative and introduction to the subtle, yet haunting sound effects to the fantastic implementation of the soundtrack are top notch. The twin peaks vibe, and the dialogue is exquisitely written, just a shame this sold 750k. God I hope Remedy is allowed to finish it. The Writer can't come soon enough.

EDIT: nicely written brah keep up the good work. Some of us appreciate the intellect. On a side note, I didn't mind the collectibles. They add replayability to some, and coffee thermos and the alarm clocks at least make sense (better than orbs lol) and fit the context of the game. Also, while collecting, it made me realize the levels weren't as linear as fanboys would like you to believe.

It's still my 2010 GOTY but you shouldn't worry too much about the credit it gets. Reputation-wise, the game gets/will get props from many ppl except from much of the n4g community. Kind of funny considering their comments will also say "cough, bring over to PS3/ PC now" ;). It certainly deserves more sales though

Kirby Wii on the way

CVG: Kirby looks set to make his return in a Wii game in the next 12 months as Hoshi No Kirby (Kirby Of The Stars) has appeared on Nintendo's latest release schedule.

The new schedule was released as part of Nintendo's Financial Results Briefing and Hoshi No Kirby appears alongside the Legend Of Zelda (Temp) in the list.

However, the release dates for both games are listed as TBA and neither appears in the Europe or US sections of the schedule. It's also worth pointing out that Hoshi No Kirby also appeared in last year's Financial Results Briefing.

Whatever happen to Remedy? Are they still an independent developer

NovusTerminus2394d ago

Yes, after Alan Wake they moved on to launch Quantum Break, and currently are working on a new game with no systems announced for it.

Ricegum2394d ago

They went multiplatform so as a PlayStation 4 owner I'm looking forward to what they bring out.

@solidsnake while you are entitled to your opinion, Alan wake was one of the best games of last gen.

DrumBeat2393d ago

Maybe it's just a physical game they play in the studio. Like tag or hide and seek.

should be an opinion piece as this dlc came out like 7 years ago

DeadManMMX2394d ago

The Signal and The Writer don't just offer clarity they are the continuation and true ending of the game. I love that game but I'm not a fan of the practice of DLC conclusions. This game, Dead Space 3, Dead Rising 4 others I can't quite remember.

TekoIie2393d ago

I think this game was an example of something with a full blown sequel planned but MS dictated that they'd only be willing to fund dlc and a smaller game.

Had the game been more successful I think we'd have seen an Alan Wake 2 by now.

Xb1ps42393d ago (Edited 2393d ago )

Loved this game... ms had so many great games last gen and gen before that, sadly i could only imagine what it would of been like with the 1x with sequels like this game and perfect dark, brute force, ninja Gaige now would be insane! Crimson skies, kameo...

Damn ms why you gave up on so many great franchises? I’m sure I’m missing many more games!

These are standalone right? We don't need Alan wake for them?

Gazondaily2976d ago

Yeah I wonder if this is the case too. If so, that's amazing.

spicelicka2976d ago

I think they do require Alan wake. On the Xbox site it says "This add-on works with Alan wake".

American nightmare is the only one that's independent.

TheCommentator2976d ago

You are correct, Spicelicka, both free episodes are add ons to Alan Wake. American Nightmare is the only stand alone. Interesting thing I noticed while looking the content up though... There's a 6 episode, live action prequel called Bright Falls on the marketplace I didn't know they made. I'm thinking about ckecking it out but I want to read into it a bit more.

crazychris41242976d ago

Just picked up Alan Wake yesterday, I have perfect timing

ghostface92976d ago

Cool does anyone know when they will send codes out for those who preordered quantum break I still havent got mine and want to play american nightmare after I am done with it. Quantum break has been great so far

illtownNJONE2976d ago

american nightmare took 2weeks after I preorderd QB and Alan Wake is 7-10 days after release of QB

EazyC2976d ago

Did that game do well? I remember playing it at a friends and being so surprised that it doesn't have more recognition.
