Apple demanded Microsoft to stop its Laptop Hunters ads

Apple may have publicly responded to Microsoft's Laptop Hunters ads with a counterpunch of its own back in May, but it looks like it may have been singing a slightly different tune behind the scenes more recently, at least according to Microsoft's Chief Operating Officer, Kevin Turner.

Speaking at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference earlier today, Turner said that he knows the ads are working because "two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying..

For those who can buy them. The same applies with the PS3.
But Apple started pointing out in their ads all the little weaknesses the PCs have. And now Microsoft is pointing out just ONE weak point for MACs, which is the price and is already causing attention. And what I love about the commercial is that Microsoft seems to embrace the "I'm a PC" slogan, pointing out that there's nothing wrong with it.

Props to Microsoft, though I don't always agree with their decisions, these ads are just brilliant.

you have to take the software into consideration. if you buy a windows machine with the capabilities of the iLife software and so forth, you clearly have to pay more than for the mac.

also, try to find a desktop machine like the imac (size) at dell or another store. you will see they cost almost 1000$ more.

It's a Mac book pro and even with the education discount it was almost double what I would've paid for a PC. The only reason I went with a Mac is because almost everyone I know that has one has had no problems with it and I'm pretty sick of the blue screen of death.

But on topic: I thought the MS ads were genius. Apple wants to portray Windows owners and chubby nerds while Mac owners are slim young people so why can't MS fight back by showcasing it's biggest advantage over a Mac: the price.

In a way, this situation between MS and Apple is very similiar to the one with MS and Sony. Price is a big advantage to the average person.

The ads are just fine. I'm a recent (under 2 years) Mac convert and while I mostly love the product, it is overpriced like all Apple merchandise. However you get what you pay for with them. No issues whatsoever since I gave my Dell laptop to my daughter and picked up a Macbook Pro for me and an iMac for the den. Same complaints with my iPhones (4 total for family). We love them but it's a steep price to pay initially and monthly but it's definitely worth it.

That's easy, it's because they found people will pay it. It's the fundamentals of economics. Apple found a niche market and are taking it for all it's worth. The percentage of Apple users is small, so Apple is getting as much as they can from them. If they lowered the price they would probably still have a small percentage of marketshare, but with less profit per product sold.

What they're doing is slowly increasing sales and slowly decreasing retail prices across the board. If you check out Apple's website, you'll see just how cutting edge their manufacturing process is. If you sit a Dell Laptop and a Macbook Pro side by side, the difference in weight, sturdiness, noise, heat, and battery life are pretty astounding.

The real renaissance in Macbook Pro sales will come when the 13-inch finally retails at around $799. But that probably won't happen for another three years. The hardware itself has become so powerful though that pretty soon there won't be much of a reason to use cutting edge processors and memory. And this shift will probably help prices as well.

The only thing holding me back from getting a Macbook Pro is the lack of a Blu-ray burner (let alone blu-ray drive). The screens are already HD quality. They just need to start letting us play HD movies on the damn thing.

Also look at how long it takes sometimes for apps to work with the mac OS. From what ur saying maybe thats why other companies dont put the time and money into it unless if they have to. PC laptops with the same specs can be found for around 600$ only 200 less, yes, but that would make the mac seem "normal", which no longer makes it appealing to the "mac crowd".

Well actually the difference is more about looks than what's inside. All C2D processors and chipsets use around the same power and produce about the same temps.

PC laptops will have nearly identical motherboard layout, ports on the left and right edges, speaker/mic headers on the front edge, etc. Generally HP laptops have been more rounded out around the edges and corners, whereas Dell and IBM have remained pretty sharp. But internally they all will be built very close to each other. For instance they'll have the heatsink/heatpipe combo to cool all 3 main components, the CPU, northbridge, and graphics (if any) using only just one main fan.

Mac laptops aren't as serviceable as PC laptops. However, Apple gives you a great warranty option: the 3 year Apple Care plan which is very outstanding. So you can't say that Apple doesn't stand by its products. I think it's only matched by HP's Total Care plans, which are identical in price and terms, but I give the edge to anything PC simply because deconstructing your Mac usually voids the warranty. And it's a great warranty to lose, so you give into the discouragement.

music production/movie production on my macbook. I would've gone with something else, trust me. I paid a hefty amount for my laptop, so I can take my beats on the road with me.

My Mac does all my production needs, flawlessly... Im impressed! as it's my first apple product I've ever owned. Lots of musicians told me if I could afford it, it's the best to go for music/video production. I utilize it on a daily basis...

Actually, the idea that macs can't get viruses is technically incorrect. Macs can't get "Windows-based" viruses, meaning viruses written to attack a Windows-based environment. Yeah a lot of people claim that when you buy a Mac you're paying for higher quality than a PC. The simple fact of the matter is that most iMacs and Mac Pros are constructed from off the shelf PC parts with Mac OSX installed. The quality is no better than that of a standard PC, save the operating system. Mac OSX is more stable than Windows Vista, that's no secret. But for the exorbitant price, Macs aren't worth the price of admission.

Apple can price their OS cheaper than Vista and XP but their hardware is always more expensive.

There's nothing in a Mac that isn't in a PC, besides an Apple OS and BIOS. They use the same processors now, the same graphics, and even the same connectivity options (USB, Firewire, Gb Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n, etc). If you're willing to pay more for the "illusion" of higher quality then you're just lying to yourself.

Even if Apple builds the machine in USA the parts are still coming from Taiwan, same as any other OEM out there.

Yeah, Macs kind of remind me of those toy car tracks I used to play with when i was a kid, the cars dont crash often, but you can only go around a fixed track.

I think MS adverts are good. I personally don't think the ones with the kids are good and I must admit they do annoy me.

Apple's business model is to provide a limited number of machines with specific configurations. That allows them better control of the hardware and prevents bugs in the software. They provide a simple machine of good quality and people buy them to avoid headaches.

Now it is true that they are more expensive that "cheap" PCs. So MS adverts are spot on.

MS claiming that windows is so easy to use that any kid can use them without problems is another matter. Windows is not renown for being easy to use, on the contrary. They just want to pretend that Apple is wrong with their claims in their adverts. The problem is that they are right on Windows being clunky and buggy.

So Apple should just shut up as these adverts showing people buying cheap laptops are good and a just return for 3 years of Apple bashing Microsoft.

In general I don't like Windows this is why I run Linux on my work laptop. I feel so much better since I got rid of Windows.

At home I have a mac and I'm happy to pay for good quality and avoid headaches. I could potentially buy a pc and run Linux but I feel that the latter is not as good as OS X and support for Linux is still quite limited, Linux being a free software. Also Apple laptops are brilliant pieces of engineering, nothing like my Dell laptop at work. I wouldn't save much money buying a good quality pc running Linux compared to a mac anyway.

Also I think it's not worth buying cheap products in the long run. You usually end up spending as much money as you have to buy a new product more often (cheap products break down more easily and often). Also you won't be enjoying your product all that time. It tends to be a loose-loose situation. If you don't have the money, wait until you get it or take a credit but don't buy cheap, this is my philosophy.

So, good adverts, well done MS! I keep my mac though, thank you very much.

...and besides if you look at consumer reports the computers that have the most repairs are the macs. From all companies reported the average is a 3% and macs have a 5% failure. And yeah I was surprised to see that since I thought macs where the toughest. Macs may have a better OS in terms of very little to no viruses but dollar for dollar the better laptops are pc versions. And if you don't like MS just go for linux or wait for the Google Chrome OS.

My wife and I are an example, of PC vs. Mac. I went with a Mac I paid a lot of money for my mac but ther performance and ready to use programs with plug and play usb support was out of this world. Mac's make life a little easier on the owner where as there aren't many viruses written for the OSX system. She brought her P.C and so far she has had numerious viruses, and has paid to have the computer repaired, twice... I have yet to experience any problems with my mac.
I can see how some of you feel that Macs are expensive, but you also have to get past the smoke and mirrors that MS provides, just as you viewed the smoke and mirrors of Apple, and look toward why Apple charges a lot of money for their products. Apple's customer service, product features, and revolutionary engineering is something a lot of people don't look at. I have used both systems, and can tell you that the quality and manufacturing of a Mac period is out of this world. No Lap Top when place side by side will provide the battery life, hardware weight and programs that The Mac Air provides.
However, the main point is Mac is a nitch machine what are you using it for period point blank.

I'm a huge Apple fan. I own an iMac. Usually I'd back Apple up, but they're in the wrong for this. Apple has been clowning Microsoft since 2006 in their Macs vs. PC commercials. Every one of the Apple ads have something negative to say about PCs, mainly Windows. Now it's wrong for Microsoft to counter attack and advertise their own products? As far as I know, the people in these "Find a PC under $1,000" ads never say anything negative about Apple products, they're just trying to find a good machine at the best value -- and they do so. In this economy, not everyone can afford a $1,000 machine. I don't understand Apple's logic on this. Apple products are worth the price if you have the money -- they're great products. However, don't blame Microsoft and it's partners for trying to generate sales on their cheaper hardware.

I agree that macs are way overpriced. I have an iMac and want a Macbook pro. They may be overpriced, but ever since I converted (pc user for 19 years) I wouldnt go back.

Both commercials do the same thing. The mac points out the flaws of the pc, the pc points out the flaws of the mac. I find it funny that u guys think the windows commercials are brilliant. The mac commercials are at least clever. They have ideas behind them and are entertaining. The pc ads are like...hey this mac is cool, but look at the price! Lets be a tad more obvious.
