Hellblade II and Alan Wake 2 Are Signs of A Worrying Trend

Moving forward, there’s no guarantee that the next big console game will get a physical release.

-Foxtrot133d ago

Don't support it, be patient, wait for a physical version and then there won't be a trend.

Nyxus133d ago

That what I'll do. If there's no physical version I'll just skip it, plenty of other games to buy.

Cacabunga133d ago

Boycott it, let them fail miserably..
i didn’t buy AW and i will never do unless it’s on disc.

Eonjay132d ago

In another article someone posted that Starfield is being dropped to 3 cents at Walmart to clear stock. Whatever your opinion on this, you have to see the value of physical media. If physical goes away we are at the mercy of digital storefronts. So in this case having physical as an option creates a situation where it's cheaper to play Starfield physical than even paying $10 for GP.

EvertonFC132d ago

Why NOT just play it on GP then buy it later when it's on physical.

Nyxus132d ago

@ Everton: I don't have a Gamepass subscription.

DarXyde133d ago

You're absolutely right, but we're unfortunately dominated by a culture of convenience.

EvertonFC132d ago (Edited 132d ago )

Most.gamers will be playing this game on GP or PC so no disk needed.
Why would they make a physical version to cater for about 200,000 who wants a disk.
*It's not worth it.
Didn't disk owners see this coming a million miles away with GP and other subs.

FinalFantasyFanatic133d ago

Hopefully enough people are willing to be patient, but I think that might be asking too much.

EvertonFC132d ago

90% of HB2 gamers will buy PC or GP. The sales for the 1st game were not great and mainly digital.
I don't see many Xbox gamers liking the 2nd game either.
Not even sure why they did a HB2 tbh as nobody seemed to like the 1st game.

Popsicle132d ago

I have never agreed with pirating, but with the way things are going in the gaming industry I am starting to understand it.

If purchasing doesn’t allow me to own the content, then how would pirating said content make it an act of theft?

Unknown_Gamer5794132d ago

You could also do both. Pay for the official release in whatever form it’s in, then the morality police can F off if you choose to have and play the game in whatever form you wish. Sure, pirating is also digital, but ROMs are not subject to being tied to an account, and whatever consequences that entails.

EvertonFC132d ago (Edited 132d ago )

Most of the game isn't even on the disk either though so what's the difference? Stick disk in then wait for half the game to be downloaded.
So you don't really own the physical game either just the option of trading the game in at retail and have some extra pennies to put twds a new game.

dumahim132d ago

Phil said last year: "We are full speed ahead in our mission to bring players more ways to play their favorite games." Guess he left out the part about removing even more ways to play them.

neutralgamer1992132d ago

alan wake 2 sold so badly that it will do physical but HB2 will see most of it's player base on GP so not sure if they will do one

EvertonFC132d ago

Was anybody actually wanting to buy a physical version ? PC gamers wont be, GP gamers won't be so that leaves a small number of series X owners who probably want to buy physical.
It's not worth it for them to make 200,000 copies.

monkey602132d ago

I skipped Alan Wake 2 and Baldurs Gate 3 because there was no physical release.
Baldurs Gate 3 is coming now! So hopefully it's a matter of time.
As for Hellblade 2 I'm not sure the length of the game warrants an expensive print unfortunately. In terms of value there it might actually be gamepass. Shame they went for such a short play.

porkChop133d ago

If you're concerned about the lack of physical copies then don't buy it. It's that simple. Wait for a physical release. Any game that's being published by a major publisher should have a physical release.

EvertonFC132d ago

Or just play it on GP and buy it later down the road on physical.
Why is everyone on here having such a fanny attack? Play it in GP then buy it physical later, simples ffs

monkey602132d ago

That doesn't really support the message that not buying it is supposed to send in the first place though.

Ethereal133d ago

No physical, no buy. Give us this generation at least.

shinoff2183133d ago

I think by the time consoles go digital only, say next xbox next ps, I think they will be surprised by sales. I'll be in no rush to buy a new console that doesnt support physical releases. I think Sony and Nintendo will continue support. I only think this due to their support for smaller releases from lrg, red dart, and numerous other small publishers.

KyRo133d ago

That's where console gaming would die for me. It's not just the lack of having physical media which I don't like. I like having a choice where to buy my games from and shopping for deals. I ain't paying £70 for any new release from a locked MS or Sony store when physical is almost always cheaper and drops in price quicker.

I'm no PC gamer but they have a number of ways to buy games so pricing is still competitive

mkis007133d ago

If Sony wanted to go digital only so soon, they wouldn't have designed the ps5 slim the way they did where every version can be upgraded.

shinoff2183133d ago

To clarify I'm not saying next Gen will be digital only I meant it as an example like IF

Cockney77d ago

I think for Sony its a given, bluray is their baby and with them now topping 200gb and no whispers of a media replacement they'd be silly not to offer physical next gen, I don't think there's a downside for them

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 77d ago
shinoff2183133d ago

I don't buy games unless they get a physical release. I have bought digital games and I'd be quicker to give an indie game a pass over a aaa game, my Rule for digital games is no more the 15 20 dollars if I really wanna play it. Aaa devs though have no excuses so I won't buy their games if there's no physical. Even indie devs are finding ways to get their games published physically so there's no excuse on these. Especially one coming from the consoles 1st party.

EvertonFC132d ago

Most will be playing HB2 on GP or PC so no disk needed. The 1st game didn't sell well on Xbox so I'm guessing about 100,000 physical copies would be needed, it's just not worth it and a logistical nightmare.

Terry_B133d ago

Just as I said it 2 years ago and was downvoted to hell for it.

The days of physical media are counted. Its a matter of the next 5 years that music, movies, video games will all be digital only..just like it is already on PC.

DarXyde133d ago

With an attitude of acceptance and complacency, sure. Very possible and even likely.

Microsoft is feeling emboldened and this was always a concern of mine: that they, with their insane capital, could (and likely would) reshape the industry to their liking. They were allowed to make two purchases that got them nearly every mainstream FPS title, World of Warcraft, Diablo, StarCraft, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Candy Crush. This was always going to go off the rails because this passionless company has taken a kingmaker position, simply by using regulatory system that has been broken for decades and allowed them to amass so much capital that they could afford to spend nearly TWELVE FIGURES on company acquisitions. Really, can we pause for a moment and process the insanity behind that?

Anyway... We can't be surprised when Microsoft has their fans cheering them on so they can have more Game Pass content, only to have prices raised and be told you're not getting a physical release because you'll give them what they want in the end. It's like voting against one's own interests, and we know that is not uncommon.

Can't even blame Microsoft at this point. They're pretty much just swinging d*** now because at the end of the day people aren't that principled.

Some are, and I commend anyone who is seriously saying you're not going to stand for this. But ultimately, I think you're outnumbered by flaky people.

Oh, and in case it isn't clear, I would not at all be surprised to see Sony and Nintendo to do something similar. My point is that Microsoft is reshaping the industry to their liking and I'm sure Sony and Nintendo would gladly accept the precedent this sets.

Terry_B133d ago

The acceptance is already there..just look how the sales of physical media shrinks and shrinks since years, no matter if it is console games, music or movies.

DarXyde132d ago

Terry_B,

But this article exists BECAUSE there is no outright acceptance of this approach. Sony, wisely, revised the PS5 DE to allow for physical media via drive attachment. That is excellent and I think they're reading the room with that one.

In terms of overall acceptance, I would say we need to interpret in layers:

We have physical game sales declining, but we also have most people passing on sub services as digital sales are a much higher proportion of sales than in previous years. It's difficult to say sales of games broadly are better or worse, but as a proportion of sales, to me, this trend is at least a sign that owning games matters.

The way I see it, digital sales are only high because people are under the impression they own it and they've yet to come up against the issues with that belief. Let there be a big, highly anticipated game where the ability to play a digital version gets revoked (like GTA VI). I'm willing to bet there would be a massive shift back to physical.

People don't seem to be interested in renting their games generally and that's probably why the game rental industry is in a bit of a rut: you don't hear about Gamefly anymore and Game Pass/PS Plus more or less have their current uptake for online service access above all else.

So to put a neat little ribbon on this comment: acceptance, I contend, is extremely volatile. The moment there is sizeable awareness of how licensing games is not the same as owning full games, physical is back in full swing. It's very conditional and has not hit people in a way that is truly substantive yet. That very likely changes if a major company goes out of business and you lose access to their digital gaming content.

FinalFantasyFanatic133d ago

PC games have already done away with physical discs, it's rare to come across such a thing, and even if you do, it's practically guaranteed to be just an activation key (I found that out when I first got back into PC gaming). Unfortunately, I can see that eventually happening to console gaming, and I'd rather it didn't happen.

I think music is already more or less there, but with movie streaming, people are slowly going back to discs when they realise their favourite movie or series leaves streaming services.

andy85133d ago

Worldwide infrastructure is nowhere near good enough for it yet. Jesus some people are even still on data caps

shinoff2183133d ago

Exactly. There's data caps, there's sh internet. I'm sure it's not across the whole u.s. but alot of the rural area surrounding my city don't even have cable speed internet. Why the u s. Is so behind on internet speeds never mind I don't even wanna get into that

‘Hellblade 2’ Launches As The 23rd Most-Played Xbox Game, What Does That Mean?

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 launched last week to solid reviews from both fans and players. But its playercount? That's another story.

helicoptergirl3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

That's awful. This combined with the really low Steam numbers paint a disastrous picture imo. Really bad timing too because Tango was closed down for a similar thing. Great reviewed game, and low sales and/or player count. Hi-Fi Rush reviewed a hell of a lot better and it was widely loved by everyone, Hellblade 2 nowhere near that.

I know the rumor is that the studio has their next game already green-lit, but if I worked at Tango, I would be furious. "Why do they survive while we get binned?" I'd be telling myself.

But the suit woman will have you believe "Oh we have different metrics for the success of one studio compared to another studio. We judge each studio and game on their own set criteria" or something like that, I'm paraphrasing here but you get the idea. But no one who works there knows what the hell that even means. I mean the DLC for Redfall was getting worked on days before they even got the news their studio was getting dumped in the trash. So what are these mysterious metrics to let studios survive and others perish? I bet this is all hogwash, I bet MS don't even really know. They just had to make cuts and certain studios just found their way on the chopping block. Someone had to bite the dust, why not you?

Well I bet all this does nothing for the confidence of other employees in other studios. The truth is you have no idea where your career will be in a year from now working at one of their studios that aren't the mega big ones. MS just have too many studios to manage efficiently. "We'll just throw money at them and buy them and worry about the details later on. I mean we can do it, we're Microsoft."

darthv723d ago

...have you seen what the top 10 consists of? Its things like fortnite, roblox, CoD, apex... etc. This being a new game that has a niche appeal is actually surprising to see at 23. Its also the 33rd top paid game on the PC through the MS store.

tay87013d ago

Those are dreadful numbers any way you slice it dude. They hyped this game to hell for the last 4 plus yrs. It was supposed to be xboxs big game this yr. Ninja Theory is probably sweating right now.

Scissorman3d ago

And it's already slipped out of the Top 100 on Steam. Meanwhile a port of the 4-year old Ghost of Tsushima is sitting comfortably at #8.

RiseNShine3d ago

One of the biggest games of the year, a multi million sequel and heavily advertised game, at 23 most played? There's no way to justify those numbers.

darthv723d ago

^^heavily advertised game...?

I mean, I knew the game was coming but outside of a boot screen ad for it, there has been little to no marketing. And yet it still managed 23rd. Make of that what you will.

Elda3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Here in the East Coast on NY/NJ on cable tv Hellblade 2 has been advertised pretty well. I see the commercials every day at least 3 times a day for the past 3 weeks. It's even advertised as YT commercials.

Chevalier3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

What an idiotic comment. Let me guess the next comment would be GTA V outsold everything so....

Absolutely terrible numbers all round for this game. Ghost of Tsushima at number 8. Good games going to sell regardless of excuses

CobraKai3d ago

Nice try on spinning it but it debuting at 23 isn’t a good thing. It’s one of MS anticipated exclusives.

Cacabunga3d ago

That GP adds no value to a game..
ninja theory got it all wrong, from being sold to MS to only prioritizing graphics

jwillj2k42d ago (Edited 2d ago )

23 is high just shows how shite Xbox lineup is. Game should have come at 70’s.

RpgSama3d ago

What a disaster, 2 failures in a row for Ninja Theory, first Bleeding edge, now Hellblade 2, any way you slice it these are not the numbers the most awaited game of the year for Xbox should show (before Activision purchase), also player numbers is extremely low and even more surprising considering is day 1 on gamepass.

Crows903d ago

If they worked on heavenly sword instead then they would have something worth playing and waiting for... unfortunately that won't happen.

Terry_B3d ago

It means that it will be the..50th? 75th? most played xbox game in June.

anast3d ago

I think it's well below 75th on Steam.

CrimsonWing693d ago

That people played it 🤷‍♂️

Terry_B3d ago

The graphics are great though *fixed it

ChasterMies3d ago

The lowest common denominator isn’t after great games. Look at xDefiant player numbers.

InUrFoxHole2d ago

Not sure how I feel about that game yet.

Scissorman3d ago

If this game cost more and took longer to develop than Hi-Fi Rush, then I would worry if I were Ninja Theory. Projects may have been greenlit, but the increased scrutiny over at MS may very well put them on the chopping block. The incredible irony here is that it was PlayStation players that pushed the original game passed its 1 million copies sold milestone. With that purchasing power cut out, and the Game Pass effect having trained Xbox players to not purchase games, it seems that the sequel may have been set-up for failure.

italiangamer3d ago

And that's exactly what pisses me off about Hellblade 2 not being on PlayStation, Sony promoted the original game and I bought it basically on D1 back in the day because I liked what I saw and ended up really enjoying it!
I really hope Hellblade 2 is next on the porting list because I would buy it in a heartbeat, asshole microsoft robbed me of this game!

darthv723d ago

Just get an xbox. Then it will be YOU that is robbing Microsoft. Gamepass is a hell of a deal and an addictive one at that.

AndrewM3d ago

No darth, buying an Xbox only helps xbox lol he can play gamepass on com if he wants to take advantage of them destroying themselves.

Scissorman3d ago

If anything I would say that these sales figures and player counts may actually fast-track its PS5 port.

Bathyj3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Just get an Xbox? You're kidding right? No one paddles out and jumps on a sinking ship.

I wouldn't buy an Xbox for this lacklustre game and I wouldn't sign up to gamepass if I did. People want to trade their long term sustainable games industry for a short term saving, go ahead and see how it turns out.

Actually we're seeing how that turns out. Unsatisfied Devs. Mediocre games and a failing Microsoft games division.

Rhythmattic3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Hay Darth.. "Just get an xbox"
so.. explain.....what is Xbox ?

GotGame8183d ago

You can play it on PC. Heck you can play it, on just about anything, if you have decent Internet. It is an amazing looking game.

@Darth

I would have. But ES6 is coming to PlayStation after all, so there's really no need.

Inverno4d ago

Yeah and many games before it have done what it did and more. Why are we impressed by features that have been standard in many games before? Sites are gonna keep up these fluff pieces for a while longer while everyone has already moved onto some indie game that costs less, took less time to make and does more with gameplay. So many games have been killed off by negative reviews and negative opinion pieces for being more of less like Hellblade 2, but nah this one's special.

I'm confused how it's locked 30 on Series X tbh. Admittedly my laptop is a touch more powerful than a Series X but I'm getting 90-100 fps with low settings. Which is still absolutely stunning btw, even at low settings its the best looking game I've played (i play on high though, which I'm getting 60 with DLSS quality mode). I guess it's a CPU thing but surely it was possible

Skuletor4d ago

I noticed the same thing with Gotham Knights, when I was getting over a hundred fps and wondering how the consoles were stuck at 30.

Elda4d ago

The game is mostly walking around while hearing voices, then puzzles then battle sequences then a talking sequence then repeat.
