I wouldn't say this gauges popularity, it gauges how many people played at least 1sec of any given game. That doesn't mean much when it's part of a subscription service. I can't say I have a better solution as play time is not a set number for anything, and sales are not the whole story either with sub services around, but this metric of just how many people got to the splash screen is not indicative of popularity
