The possibility of XBOX Game Pass on PlayStation 5 - Dash Gamer Podcast

Dan Rizzo & Brendan White discuss the Bethesda/XBOX Buyout and the consequences that may be felt throughout the entire industry, and how XBOX may potentially hold the key to open that forbidden portal. Could we in fact see XBOX Game Pass on PlayStation 5?

If true then console war will be over in my opinion.

PrimeVinister1172d ago (Edited 1172d ago )

It has debatably been in a tense cease-fire for a couple of years but you are right, it would be the end of it as we know it.

Sonic-and-Crash1172d ago (Edited 1172d ago )

if Gamepass appears on PS then its the end of PStation ..i dont think it will ever happen...Also what s the difference with PS Plus ?? really ? in my eyes PS Plus offers the exact same things and even let you have the games to your PLus library forever

xHeavYx1172d ago

@Sonic
The end of Playstation? Are you out of your mind? Playstation has been outselling Xbox from the beginning, being able to play Xbox titles on Playstation would mean that even less people would be buying an Xbox.
Also, no, GamePass and PS+ are nothing alike. I do wish GamePass was available on Playstation, but it would mean the end for the Xbox console.

crazyCoconuts1172d ago (Edited 1172d ago )

Cease fire? So you think when Sony and MS have their board meetings they're not talking about strategies that pull customers from the other side? I mean... they're competitors. Just because we see a few games that are cross platform doesn't mean they're not in an intense war for our $$$

Mr_Writer851172d ago

@sonic

Plus and Game Pass are not comparable at all

Plus:
Cheaper
Required to play online
Monthly games (usually old, unless it's an indie game)

GP
Lots more game
More expensive
Doesn't include online (unless you get ultimate)
Has all MS first party titles on it, and they launch on day one.

Not comparable in the slightest. The nearest you get to game pass on PlayStation is PSNow.

If that happens the install base for xbox would diminish even more. If and that's a huge if that ever happens ms would become a content software company. The biggest reasonif you never happen because Xbox live generates too much money for Microsoft for them to give up on Xbox brand

Who in the right mind would buy Xbox if they could play on Xbox games PlayStation along with all the PlayStation games

enkiduxiv1172d ago

I don't know why people are downvoting this. You are absolutely correct. The 7.5 billion dollar acquisition was all about giving XBOX some highly desirable exclusives so they could better compete with PlayStation and Nintendo. Putting Game Pass on PlayStation would basically just be handing this exclusivity back over to Sony.

I understand they would still make money from the subscription, but at that point they would simply be operating like a big publisher, like Activision, EA or Ubisoft.

DJStotty1172d ago

That will never ever happen, again Sony will never allow a competing platform on their platform, ever.

GamerRN1172d ago

I highly doubt it will happen. It'll hurt Xbox from a hardware perspective

DJStotty1172d ago

Not only that, Sony would not allow competition for PSNOW on their platform, Microsoft would make more money via gamepass subs on Sony's platform, the xbox hardware perspective would stay the same, they do not sell enough hardware to warrant a significant financial impact.

GamerRN1172d ago

LoL they don't sell enough hardware? What are you talking about lol

GamerRN1172d ago

@DJStotty

By that logic, Sony wouldn't feel any financial impact as they likely don't make anything on the failed PSNow network

darthv721172d ago (Edited 1172d ago )

DJ, they could make a mutual agreement. PS gets GP, XB gets PSNow. Both offer streaming as an option on devices that dont support native downloads.

MS and Sony already have a deal inked on the use of Azure and it wouldnt be much to add in cross platform streaming.

Livingthedream1172d ago

Only hurts them if they put their xbox exclusives on the service

DJStotty1172d ago

@GamerRN

For a "significant" financial impact, how much do they make on each console at the moment?

If anything, they are probably making a loss on the consoles sold.

"By that logic, Sony wouldn't feel any financial impact as they likely don't make anything on the failed PSNow network"

That makes no sense.

So you think Gamepass being on Playstation, will result in less consoles sold for xbox, and no gamepass subscribers on Playstation? What?

DJStotty1172d ago (Edited 1172d ago )

@Darthv72

"they could make a mutual agreement. PS gets GP, XB gets PSNow."

Would it not be easier to to make a console where Sony does the hardware, Microsoft do the software then? (I don't mean Sony stop 1st party, more so all xbox games on PS).

That would result in no competition between the 2 platform holders, would then likely merge, and then the gaming industry would stagnate with no competition.

It will never happen, if it does i'll eat my monitor on a livestream

@Livingthedream

"Only hurts them if they put their xbox exclusives on the service"

How can making more software sales, and increasing subscription numbers, hurt them? If anything, they will make more money.

GamerRN1171d ago

You guys DO realize the real money from hardware comes from the licensing fees that other companies pay for each game sold. So the loss in hardware sales gets offset by fees paid for having a solid user base and charging fees.

Never say never...
It is just that gamepass is stupid.
It is fully targeted to the bot so thoughtful American “hip” crowd that does not understand money and or value.

It would hurt Sony none...
But it would then shine a light on how poorly Microsoft is as a gaming company.
They have nothing exciting, they just sell the idea that it is.
We are now at the point where we close our eyes and cross our fingers Tehran it comes to a Microsoft release..
My point? How in the world is a gaming company that has not made a new AAA game in over ten years offering a gaming service?

And so far.. 99% of the “new” releases are your straight to dvd movie that are not testing well.

Why would. Sony want and or need this?

DJStotty1172d ago

Good story, full of fiction, but nonetheless a great and entertaining read.

AngelicIceDiamond1172d ago

Wanda vision is a good show it seems you're in a infinite loop, broken record stuck in 2011. Saying the same things over and over and over again.

Radio static* hello... Hello rude are you there? One day you'll get with the times.

Buy entertaining fan fiction as always though.

Rude-ro1172d ago

Full of typos...🤦
But very real nonetheless
If you do not think Microsoft is starting at the profit possibilities of said service vs the years of collected data from connected consoles... then I do not know what you think is “real”.
I built a pc. I have Xbox live. I looked at the offerings.... and would not find value in most games offered.
You are a paying a fee to access games...
But the dlc? Micro transaction? Live service games like destiny?
It all adds up.
Then we have seen the output from Microsoft.
Charging full AAA prices on indie style games to make them seem like a better value on gamepass is not a value to be had.

More times then none, I see diehard Xbox fans celebrate bad games as a sales pitch for gamepass. They are still bad games. So I do not get why a monthly fee is needed.
Just drop demos and be consumer friendly.

🤷🏻‍♀️

AngelicIceDiamond1172d ago

"Charging full AAA prices on indie style games to make them seem like a better value on gamepass is not a value to be had."

You mentioned Destiny and all it's expansions. Well that game and it's expansion are all on Gamepass. Outriders isn't an indie game and it's hitting day and date. The latest Bethesda games aren't Indies Monster Hunter EA's games etc and amongst countless others aren't indie on the service.

Here's a tip education yourself on what's goin on before you say anything.

AngelicIceDiamond1172d ago

Not only that but if Sony really wanted to compete in that space they could Revamp PSNOW. This podcast doesn't make any sense knowing Sony has their own service they could push and utilize.

crazyCoconuts1172d ago

Right. Not like they'd even have to do much of a revamp. Just put newer games out there and up the price. There's a reason they're not doing that...

crazyCoconuts1172d ago

Agreed. Sony would have to be in a position where it's completely backed into a corner and lost it's market lead before it would resort to allowing competitors to suck revenue opportunity away from them. It would be Sony reverting from being a platform to just a gaming hardware provider which is FAR from where they are now. So, kinda cold day in hell scenario...

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 1171d ago
Elda1172d ago

Highly doubt that'll happen.

Futureshark1172d ago

Gamepass on PlayStation = no more Xbox.

Why would anyone buy one, if you can play all the same games on the rival hardware, plus all the PS exclusives?

LucasRuinedChildhood1172d ago

If it is possible, GamePass on PS5 would probably just include the Bethesda stuff from MS (no Halo, Gears, etc). That's MS's bargaining chip. Sony would get Fallout, Doom, Elders Scrolls, etc and MS would get at least 10m+ GamePass subscribers.

It's probably not going to happen though.

crazyCoconuts1172d ago

so many interesting problems to tackle w/ that approach, like is the service "sticky" enough to have customers continue to subscribe when you only have a small # of games that are truly exclusive to Xbox, or would they snipe and just subscribe when they want to play a certain game. If they're sniping, wouldn't it be better to just make the games available on PS and take your 30% cut of the game because 30% of $60 is $18 which is more than one month of GamePass... I'm sure the marketing departments have been through every scenario imaginable here multiple times. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in those meetings...

DJStotty1172d ago

And then if there is no xbox, why would Sony make a Playstation 6? Why would they need to?

Futureshark1172d ago

Perhaps to keep innovating the technology and pushing the boundaries of what can be done in videogaming, you know, like they have always done.

RazzerRedux1172d ago

None of this Game Pass on PS makes a lick of sense. Does anyone really think Microsoft is going to be willing to share their GP revenue with Sony? Nope. Are they going to hand out even more money to game devs for including the PS version of their games on this PlayStation Game Pass? That stream of revenue keeps getting shallower and shallower.

This will never happen. The most anyone can hope for as far as GP on other platforms is perhaps a xCloud streaming app on Switch. And probably not even that.

DJStotty1172d ago

And Sony will not open their doors for people to log in to xbox live, more chance of a Wii U revival.

RazzerRedux1172d ago (Edited 1172d ago )

No more or less chance than Microsoft opening their doors for people to login to PSN for whatever reason. Either way, it is irrelevant since that is a secondary consideration for either side to see a benefit from this partnership at all. Besides, all you need is to link your Microsoft account to PSN and Sony has shown they are willing to allow that.

RauLeCreuset1172d ago

"Does anyone really think Microsoft is going to be willing to share their GP revenue with Sony?"

That is the hang up. I'm sure they'd be okay sharing some depending on how much is coming in. It's all conditional and contingent on a lot of variables. Bottom line: They'll probably be world's apart on what they want to share and the cut PS would want if they were willing to consider allowing it on PS. I think a lot of it hinges on Xbox making GP too big to pass on, possibly using Bethesda type acquisitions to force a deal more favorable to them. I doubt it happens, but I suspect that's the plan.

Every PlayStation Studios game available now on Windows PC

Windows Central writes: "Many PlayStation Studios games that are ported to PC get dedicated PS5 DualSense support, which allows users to experience haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support without actually having to own a PS5.

According to Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, it's still the company's intent to launch the bigger single-player games on PS5 first, before later bringing the games to PC. This might not be the case for multiplayer games however, which are considered okay to launch simultaneously on console and PC."

Very very early in development. Still, fantastic news!

Let´s GO!!!

Lightning771d ago

I guess.

How come they didnt either let them go or sell Tango and others to another publisher? Not saying Ubisoft, EA would be any better. (Capcome would of treated them right )

At least it wouldn't be MS of all ppl destroying them.

MS really should let go Tango go like they did TFB here.

darthv721d ago (Edited 1d ago )

one was under Bethesda (Tango) the other under Activision (TFB). Clearly each one handled the separations of their subordinates differently.

Obscure_Observer23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

"How come they didnt either let them go or sell Tango and others to another publisher? Not saying Ubisoft, EA would be any better. (Capcome would of treated them right )"

Perhaps because Zenimax and ABK handles such matters differently based on their own internal policies as "independent" publishers.

Whoever, chances are it´s simply because MS didn´t wanted Tango or Austin to be acquired by competitors and develop new bangers for them, giving MS a bad rep in a possible future. Which could also be the reason why they ensured an exclusive partnership with TFB and its new game, before anyone else.

Sad and disgusting. But it is what it is.

Lightning7720h ago(Edited 20h ago)

"Whoever, chances are it´s simply because MS didn´t wanted Tango or Austin to be acquired by competitors and develop new bangers for them, giving MS a bad rep in a possible future."

MS has a bad rep now because those studios are no more. I rather them sell the studio continue to make multiplatform releases, while MS continues to focus on whatever they're doing. If they didn't want Tango around they should separated from them or sell them to, like they did TFB.

It's inexcusable, they have options on how to handle studios they don't want anymore with killing jobs. Not just MS but the rest of the industry also.

Sad and disgusting sure how many will get shut down next year or this year even?

I don't trust MS decisions and motivations at this point. You have to admit they make one dumb move after another.

Obscure_Observer12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

"MS has a bad rep now because those studios are no more. I rather them sell the studio continue to make multiplatform releases, while MS continues to focus on whatever they're doing. If they didn't want Tango around they should separated from them or sell them to, like they did TFB."

Imo, MS separated from TFB because they didn´t had a game associated with Xbox yet, unlike Tango.

"I don't trust MS decisions and motivations at this point. You have to admit they make one dumb move after another."

Fair enough. It was indeed an epic dumb move from them to close Tango.

Still, all to be forgotten, like always have. This is not the first time a big publisher shuts down a beloved and/or successful studio out of nowhere and certainly won´t be the last. Do you remember Lionhead? Do you remember Evolution Studios? Yeah... both were beloved studios and yet, those companies kill those studios in q blink of an eye and got away with it.

anast10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

The studio boss made some money from this transaction. Once the game releases, the studio will get chopped up.

-Foxtrot1d 2h ago

Manages to buy their freedom especially after all the shit Microsoft has been doing with its studios lately

...

Goes right back to them as partners.

Okaaaaaay...

darthv721d ago

Id venture a guess that TFB working directly with MS was a better outcome than working through Activision to get to MS.

VersusDMC22h ago

From the article...

"Toys for Bob spun out as an indie back in February after Microsoft instituted sweeping layoffs that impacted 86 employees, which was more than half of the staff"

I doubt those 86 employees enjoyed the Microsoft experience over Activisions.

Inverno22h ago

MS shuts down studios because of lack of resources and then helps these guys by giving em resources. Also MS is what forced them to buy their freedom in the first place? What kind of logic 😂

Chevalier19h ago

The best thing is that the company that is worth $3 trillion and owns the company instead of Xbox lacks resources. How the hell does a company worth $3 trillion making a measly $70 billion purchase they 'can't' support. Lol

BlindMango1h ago

The reason they would need to "partner with Microsoft" is simply to make a game that's part of a franchise that Microsoft owns. Meaning they're probably going to make a new Spyro game - they're still an independent studio, but are making a game in a franchise that Microsoft owns. It's kind of like Remedy partnering with Rockstar to be able to make the Max Payne remakes.

shinoff218343m ago

It was probably the deal to get released from Ms

Sciurus_vulgaris1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

Xbox’s gaming division seems to still function as 3 semi-autonomous sub-divisions, Xbox Studios, Bethesda and ABK. The three main sub-divisions can seemingly shut down or build studios and set up partnerships independently. This would explain why Bethesda can recently shutdown studios, while ABK spins off one studio, while building a new one. Plus, Toys for Bob could be spun off by ABK, only to immediately re-partner with Microsoft.

Chevalier19h ago

That's absolutely 💯 BS. Any sane 'autonomous' company would NOT put their games on Gamepass day 1 like COD will lose probably billions.

Also they're all under Xbox game studios so any autonomy is an illusion.

PhillyDonJawn6h ago

No, I'm sure MS can and does step in when they want something done specifically but I'm also sure they let them also work independently

shinoff218341m ago

I highly highly doubt this. Ms controls all. The guys aren't gonna be allowed to just shut something down like that without approval. No way

Elda19h ago

Either a kiddie game or something uninteresting.

Obscure_Observer12h ago

Don´t worry. You won´t be playing it anyway since their next game will possible be a next gen Xbox console game.

PhillyDonJawn6h ago

Right probably something like astrobot

romulus236h ago

Nah he said "uninteresting", lots of people are interested in Astro Bot.

Elda4h ago

Never Astro Bot. Astro Bot looks better than any exclusive released on XB this entire generation & believe there hasn't been much.

darthv721d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

That PSN number seems like it should be much higher... especially when you consider that PS4 alone has a sell through of over 117m. To not even be at least half that is rather interesting.

To the XB side, having 34m to an install base of roughly 50m (XBO sell through) or even 85m (360 sell through) is a greater percentage of unit to member ratio than PSN.

What. Definitely more os plus subscribers but that makes sense due to actual console sales

Darth the difference between the bases are huge your right but you gotta think. Ps players buy more games, where as the Xbox base relies on gamepass for their gaming. So it makes perfect sense

darthv721d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

What makes perfect sense though? You say PS players buy more games... so then logically there should be more PS+ subscribers given the increased number of online multiplayer games in the PS4 generation alone. The PS4 was the first time that + was required for online play much like Gold was for 360 users.

Keep in mind we are talking subscribers, not simply XB/PS users. I assume you meant to say offline single player games, which is most likely true as well. That gen also saw a significant increase in games with an online component comparted to the previous gen.

victorMaje1d 3h ago

I for one will be going back to essential at the next renewal. When I feel a game is good & right up my alley, I’ll check trusted reviews & just buy it.

jznrpg1d 2h ago (Edited 1d 2h ago )

I have the top tier until 2028 as they gave me a massive discount for all the years I had left but I’ll most likely go to essential as well. I buy my games but my kids do use the service occasionally. They do prefer to own their games as well since any game can leave the rental service at some point and they don’t like that idea. They mostly use it to demo games then ask me to buy games if they really like it.

RedDevils22h ago

For me, I will cancel it all together but unfortunately I still have it till 2030 lol

meganick1d 2h ago

I would like to see Sony add a fourth tier of PS Plus for people who just want to be able to play games online without any of the perks like monthly games, store discounts, or anything like that, and it should cost $20 annually, $30 maximum. There’s no way I’m paying $80 just to play games online. Even the original $60 fee was too much, and I would often wait for sales to re-up my subscription.

P_Bomb22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

Essential is too expensive, I agree. We’ve got one Essential and one Premium sub. Dropping the Premium when it expires.

gamerz19h ago

Just let my subscription lapse for the first time since 2010. Will sub again every now and then for a month or so to access my old ps+ games but for me it's the end of an era.

DivineHand12518h ago

Let those numbers continue to drop because it is now too expensive. $80 per year just to play online. I noticed they didn't offer any discounts on the subscription or controllers during this year's days of play for the first time in many years and they will feel it when people choose not to renew.

My subscription will lapse next month and it will stay that way until further notice.

KevtheDuff14h ago

There were savings on subs and controllers here in the UK? I bought a controller yesterday in the sale..
It would be weird if those deals were not in other territories too?
