The Touryst is stunning - and one of the best Switch games of 2019

John Linneman writes: Quietly revealed in August, The Touryst from Shin'en Multimedia recently arrived on Nintendo Switch and quickly left a strong impression. With its voxelised design, smooth frame-rate and unique gameplay, it's unlike anything the team has worked on to date - and I think it's one of my favourite Switch releases of 2019

204 Megabytes!

It's insane that a game that looks as good as this has such a small download size.

monkey6021637d ago

This looks great. Going on my wishlist

Fritzwochel1637d ago (Edited 1637d ago )

This is the kind of game that shines on the Switch man. I really hope for a sequel.

silkylove1636d ago

Shin'en are so good at getting the most out of Nintendo's hardware. This will be the next game I play after I finish up DQ11S

The Touryst is the first 8K 60fps game for PS5

Shin'en Multimedia's brilliant game - The Touryst - is now available for PS4 and PS5 consoles and it is now confirmed as the very first native 8K rendered game on the new generation of consoles, running beautifully at 60 frames per second no less. That's right: according to our discussions with the developer, the game internally renders at 7680x4320 - no temporal super-sampling, no reprojection, no checkerboarding, no AI upscaling. It's full-on 4320p.

- PS5 can render at 8k thanks to the higher GPU clockspeed vs 6k at the Series X according to the developer which John had asked

- the increase to clock frequencies and the difference in memory set-up makes the difference

- Touryst is not a PS4 BC game, rather a native PS5 app.

- Active AA reduce the native 8k for native 4k

Tacoboto975d ago

Important clarifications in that same paragraph your chosen quotes came from: "Shin'en rewrote the engine to take advantage of PS5's low-level graphics APIs."

The same dedicated care was not given to the earlier Xbox port - "Its GPU runs at a slower clock, but should be more capable overall as it has many more compute units."

I bought this game forever ago on Switch, I should finally check it out...

SlothLordPootus975d ago (Edited 975d ago )

To me this makes me recall Mark Cerny's presentation (sorry to bring it up again). He spoke about how the increased clocks have some advantages over simply having more compute units. That might be what we're seeing here, maybe not, who knows. If it is, it's likely that most developers won't take advantage of it. Either way, I really want to play this game on my ps5, I was jealous of Nintendo and Xbox for getting it first.

gravedigger975d ago (Edited 975d ago )

XSX GPU is capable overall surely ( like DF did pure RT compute comparison in photomode in Control LOL ) , but PS5 GPU has more advantages over XSX GPU than XSX GPU over PS5 GPU.

This 1.8 TF stronger GPU in numbers. Not bad for a weaker GPU, isn't it. So, higher clocks matters

Triangle rasterisation is 4 triangles per cycle.

PS5: ( +21% )
4 x 2.23 GHz ~ 8.92 Billion triangles per second

XSX:
4 x 1.825 GHz - 7.3 Billion triangles per second

Triangle culling rate is twice number triangles rasterised per cycle.

PS5: ( +21% )
8 x 2.23 GHz - 17.84 Billion triangles per second

XSX:
8 x 1.825 GHz - 14.6 Billion triangles per second

Pixel fillrate is with 4 shader arrays with 4 RBs (render backends) each, and each RB outputtting 4 pixels each. So 64 pixels per cycle.

PS5:( +22% )
64 x 2.23 GHz - 142.72 Billion pixels per second

XSX:
64 x 1.825 GHz - 116.8 Billion pixels per second

Texture fillrate is based on 4 texture units (TMUs) per CU.

PS5:
4 x 36 x 2.23 GHz - 321.12 Billion texels per second

XSX: ( +18% )
4 x 52 x 1.825 GHz - 379.6 Billion texels per second

Raytracing in RDNA2 is alleged to be from modified TMUs.

PS5:
4 x 36 x 2.23 GHz - 321.12 Billion ray intersections per second

XSX: ( +18% )
4 x 52 x 1.825 GHz - 379.6 Billion Ray intersections per second

Also, The Touryst on XS is optimized for it. It proudly wears a badge "Optimized for X Series"

Tacoboto975d ago (Edited 975d ago )

"Optimized for X Series" labelling just means that it was natively compiled on the SDK - doesn't mean that any effort was put into touching native low-level APIs. You spent that time making your performance chart for something I *really* don't care about, or feel is relevant in the slightest :)

Orchard975d ago

@gravedigger The Optimized for Series X|S badge more marketing than technical, it is available to a title that utilizes any component of what MS defines as 'next gen' - e.g. 120hz - it doesn't need to be truly optimized in a engineering sense.

It's clear from the developers statement about rewriting the engine that they did extra work to get to 8K on PS5 that they didn't do on XSX.

Are we now pretending the XSX cannot do 8K despite having had an 8K capable title since launch?

CaptainHenry916975d ago (Edited 975d ago )

Both consoles have low-level graphics APIs. Both consoles are very identical and similar, except for the M2 SSD drive and loading speeds. BTW, the increased clocks can be on the same level of having more compute units with a lower clock speed. Last but not least, it's going to always come down to the developer. Microsoft hasn’t released one game on the Series X that is mind-blowing or looks better than a PS5 exclusive yet. The best-looking game I've seen so far on a Next-Gen *console* was Rachet and Clank and Horizon Forbidden West. Even Halo Infinite looks like an Xbox One game. I'm waiting for Microsoft to prove me wrong since they hyped up the 1.8 more teraflops.

@gravedigger
Are you basing this off of one game 🤦‍♂️ Some games might look better on the Series X, and some might look better on the PS5. That's the way it's going to be this gen.

.....

Sure it is marketing for you guys and trying to make excuses. Like "Optimized" means : One of the biggest benefits of all that power is giving developers the ability to make games that are Xbox Series X|S Optimized. This means that they’ve taken full ADVANTAGE OF THE UNIQUE CAPABILITIES of Xbox Series X|S, both for new titles built natively using the Xbox Series X|S development environment as well as previously released titles that have been rebuilt specifically for the console. So, this is beyond 120hz optimized for XS consoles

Both PS5 and Xbox has a LOW LEVEL API.

And I know this might be hard to do - we just hear what the dev of the game actually says, who explains that for HIS game, HIS engine, the PS5 is simply better.

Orchard975d ago (Edited 975d ago )

"that they’ve taken full ADVANTAGE OF THE UNIQUE CAPABILITIES"

That simply isn't true, you only need ONE next gen feature to get the badge.

"Optimized for Series X|S is the broad term for next-generation titles, with many embracing each console's signature features. Those can include boosted resolution, upgraded framerates up to 120 frames-per-second (FPS), or high dynamic range (HDR) for popping colors. "

I can hit 120hz (in an indie game) or add HDR without truly optimizing my engine for the platform / low level API's.

We already know the XSX is capable of 8K internal rendering resolutions - it has had 8K titles for close to a year... longer than the PS5 even.

LIAR! XSX still doesn't have any 8K game for it. Stop lying, Xbox fan!
Games with highest resolution on XSX are Ori and The Touryst at 6K.

....

Even DF stated in article :
"Shin'en Multimedia's The Touryst is officially the first 8K game of the new console generation."

Also, accept that we just hear what the dev of the game actually says, who explains that for HIS game, HIS engine, the PS5 is simply better.

Razmiran974d ago

Ignoring the whole console war technical thing, you really should get around to playing it
Even in the switch it looks and plays great, and its a pretty unique game

Tacoboto974d ago

"full ADVANTAGE OF THE UNIQUE CAPABILITIES of Xbox Series X|S"

Nice CAPS. I lolled when you shouted Liar. Classic.

I suppose you think that Gears 5 and Demon's Souls maxed out the XSX and PS5 day one huh? Rays traced so good in the 8Ks.

Well this Switch port absolutely did if those didn't do it!

Since when optimized games for some platform means platform is already maxed out? LOL You just pulled that out of your ass. Gears 5 maxed out Xbone, but not XSX, even if Gears 5 proudly wear badge" optmized for XS ", Xbox fan. But nice trying for spin.

That's the other way around with AA. If you turn it off then it switches to 4k. It's using downsampling from 8k as AA.

Basing what exactly??

Gamer75974d ago (Edited 974d ago )

So when a dev says that their game runs better on xbox will you accept it or will you say that you don't believe them or will you only believe them when they say it about ps

gravedigger974d ago (Edited 974d ago )

Yet you need to find dev quote which explicitly saying that and compares both games and also a video analysis. If XSX performs better, why i should whine about it. Overall it is a stronger console, but TF aren't everything LOL.

So much about XSX which has almost 2 TF advantage, higher CU's count, higher bandwidth and weaker console is on par or performs better in some things. So, why is that a problem for Xbox fans. It shouldn't be, but it is.

Storm23975d ago (Edited 975d ago )

That’s cool I guess. But not many can take advantage of it

Jin_Sakai975d ago (Edited 975d ago )

Yes they can. It’s using it for super sampling antialiasing and downsampling native 8K resolution to 4K output.

There’s no support for 8K in the PS5 firmware at the moment.

blackblades974d ago

Indie games should be able to, if they actually put effort into them.

thesoftware730975d ago

Both systems can do it, they would just have to re-write the engine to make it happen on SX. Without any Re-write the SX version is 6k res.

Thing is that you would need an 8k T.V and of course HDMI 2.1, something that is not in reach for the larger population of gamers.

These guys are Wizards, look what they did on Wii U and then the Switch.

Destiny1080974d ago (Edited 974d ago )

no amount of re-writes, will ever get the series x up to 8k, LMAO

you clearly didn't watch the video

Duke19975d ago

Rather than turning this into yet another pissing match between Sony and MS, it would be cool to just appreciate that these developers made a pretty game run at 8k 60fps

SlothLordPootus975d ago

Absolutely incredible indeed. I love the art style.

Atticus_finch975d ago

It is mind boggling the amount of pixels being displayed per second. It is quite an achievement.

Father__Merrin975d ago

OFFICIAL N4G STATEMENT:::

where are those who was laughing at the PS5 lower CU count and lower TF numbers? we was told on here PS5 doesnt stand a change against the tidal wave power of Series X and that the power difference will never be made back up, Even though industry insiders and veterans said the CU count and TF count is only 1 part of a whole system and that you shouldn't reply only on that number....

one word........the trolls have been proven wrong and wrong again and again.....

The 8 games to play first on your Xbox Series X|S

Just what will you do with all those teraflops?

Petebloodyonion1298d ago

Aren't we a bit early for the top 10 games to play on the system?

darthv721298d ago

No, its about what to play first and is aimed at those who skipped out on xbox one.

potatoseal1298d ago

It's not aimed at those people at all. It's aimed at people who bought an Xbox Series X. Whoever they might be
