Ranking the top 10 RPGs that have set the industry on fire and recorded the most commercial success in their genre.

It was "bad" by today's open world RPG standards. Bethesda needs a formula reboot in a serious way.

I still think new vegas was the best of the three, but I agree with thekhurg. They need overhaul their formula and maybe put all that cash they banked off fallout 4 and skyrim(and still continue to milk dry) into a new engine that is actually capable of handling next gen games. Be it the next true elderscroll or fallout.

Fallout 4 broke a ridiculous number of Records so it's very clear they did something correct for people to keep purchasing.

@EDMIX you can't use sales digits as proof of quality. There's lots of bad crap that sells well. Justin Beiber, CoD, most rappers these days, etc. Their engine is dated as is their core gameplay. Bethy really does need to hit the drawing board.

I like Fallout 4 I don't think by any means that sucked but I definitely liked Fallout 3 and New Vegas better but I actually still like Fallout 4.

I also still like The Witcher 3 but by no means do I believe it's the best game this generation

Must admit I expected to see The Witcher 3 at the top. Didn't realise Sun and Moon were that damn successful. Just imagine what the Switch Pokemon RPG will do!

I believe that Pokemon by itself could essentially shift Millions upon millions of units for the Switch.

Worthless list, none of the time frames are the same. For instance Nioh sold 1 million in two weeks, Persona 5 sold 1.5 million in two months. There's no way to tell which has sold more overall.

I feel like I've seen Twinfinite do this previously with another list.

EDIT: Mass Effect, Zelda, Destiny and Skyrim could be counted depending on what you classify as RPGs (or if you count remasters). Those are about as much RPG's as the Dark Souls games and Horizon are.

Pokemon X/Y, Monster Hunter, and Youkai Watch also would be on there if 3DS is being counted (which it apparently is, as Pokemon Sun and Moon are their number 1).

These articles are thoroughly researched. We can only work with what we have. We can't just write a list that makes a bunch of assumptions.

Why is Nioh behind Persona 5? Nioh sold 1 million in two weeks and Persona 5 sold 1.5 million in two months . . . It's entirely possible that in another six weeks Nioh sold another 0.5 million. However Persona 5 is ranked higher. Maybe it sold more maybe it didn't, we don't know.

As for being thoroughly researched, what about Skyrim, Zelda, Destiny, Mass Effect, Youkai Watch, Pokemon X/Y, and Monster Hunter? Although some aren't so much RPGs, they're as much RPGs as the Dark Souls games and Horizon. Pokemon, Mass Effect, and Yokai Watch are most certainly RPGs and they should be on the list. Yokai Watch 2 sold more in two weeks than Persona 5 did in two months and it is most certainly an RPG. Mass Effect Adromeda sold more than 1 million it's first week in retail, beating out Nioh, which is on the list.

The list would be fine if it simply said "Some of the best selling RPGs of this generation" and gave available sales data without making assumptions to rank them. As it is the data just isn't really comparable and some games on the list are weird choices while other RPGs are left off.

I'd be fine with the official data simply being listed, but this ranks the game and doesn't use comparable timeframes. This makes the ranking useless. It also fails to include RPGs that we KNOW sold more than what is on the list.

Even if not official, if Mass Effect sold an estimated 1 million it's first week out WITHOUT including digital copies, it's safe to say that it beat Nioh, which sold 1 million in two weeks, digital and physical. Mass Effect likely even beat out Persona 5. http://www.vgchartz.com/art...

Yokai Watch 2 sold 1.6 million it's first two weeks in Japan alone, putting it higher than both Nioh and Persona. That's official data from Media Create. I believe that doesn't include digital sales, either.

Monster Hunter is obviously higher than a lot of games on that list, and it's as much of an RPG as Dark Souls is.

Pokemon X/Y should obviously be on there as well, seeing as Sun/Moon are.

With all due respect, if they are tied the order doesn't matter.

We can't place a game higher based on assumption, even if the projection suggests it would track higher than another.

You might be right on all counts and the order might well change (though I doubt by mich, personally) but none of that matters without confirmed, official data.

This list is based on confirmed reports. None of the figures are necessarily accurate, but until they are proven otherwise, that is what we have to go on and that is what settles the top trumps. Until Team Ninja comes out and prvoes it has sold 5 million, it has in fact, sold 1 million because that is what they have stated officially.

That's what I'm saying. You can't assume that a certain game sold higher, but you also can't assume that it didn't (which is what you're doing). Two weeks VS two months are two widely different timeframes. By ranking the games on the list in terms of sales you're misleading readers as the data simply isn't comparable. The list should not be numbered and should just provide the official numbers and let people speculate if they want to.

Also, that doesn't ignore the fact that you skipped over games such as Yokai Watch, Mass Effect, Monster Hunter (which belongs on the list as much as Dark Souls), and Destiny. I'll give it to yo that Destiny maybe shouldn't be on the list, but the other 3 should definitely be on the list and we DO have data on those games that puts them higher than other games on the list.

Never played Bloodborne or The Witcher 3 but I was at a launch event for Fallout 4. Took 3 weeks to get the platinum. Not as good as Fallout 3 but still loved it :3

Dying Light, Fallout 4, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Dragon Age: Inquisition would be my favorite RPG's this generation.
