Fallout 4's Graphics Are Kind of Underwhelming

TheArabGamer writes: "Fallout 4 is a new game that we've been waiting for quite a while (7 years). So naturally the announcement alone for current gen systems have left us all in a high spot. I too was excited until I watched the trailer twice. "

Wow
took longer than i thought

Nitrowolf23286d ago

like I said in another comment I think the graphics are fine given how big the world is and how demanding Fallout games are in comparison to all the other open world games that looks pretty good they don't ask as much in terms of inventory interaction with the world ect.

expecting to be blown away by the graphics is just setting yourself up for disappointment even if they did show amazing graphics I would have probably expected it to look at downgraded at launch rather them just be honest from the start

BiggerBoss3286d ago

Let me get this straight... When Sony releases a game with incredible graphics its "prioritizing graphics over gameplay" which is apparently a terrible thing. Yet when Fallout is revealed and appears to be "gameplay over graphics" its a terrible thing too?

The gaming community is a fickle one

zeal0us3286d ago

Best the graphics be underwhelming than overwhelming. We all seen what happen to certain games last year and the whole downgrade fiasco.

thejigisup3286d ago

I'm def expecting a graphics down grade but I'm not disappointed. The series had always been fun.

nveenio3286d ago

This is a trailer that has shown nothing but graphics. We can't say that they've prioritized gameplay. That's just an assumption. Unless this world is 10 times larger and 10 times more dense than Fallout 3, our new hardware demands better fidelity.

dumahim3286d ago

After seeing Witcher 3, I don't think that excuse can really fly. It's huge and looks great. Or maybe they're trolling and this will be the opposite of a graphics downgrade.

I honestly don't care though. I just want more Fallout.

nX3286d ago

I'm usually one who doesn't care that much about graphics as long as the game is entertaining but after being spoiled by The Witcher 3 every open world game is kinda underwhelming. They're still far from release though so I'm expecting some improvements until then.

Lamboomington3286d ago

@BiggerBoss

What ? People said that about the Order not because the graphics were good. It's because they had multiple other problems with the game.

What about Ryse with on XBOX ? Shallow gameplay with not enough complexity, repetitive waves of enemies etc etc.

Graphics are an important part of a game. If they are good, then it helps the game, giving it more entertainment value.

Needless to say, if the graphics are great but the gameplay is shit, then the game is shit, and ofcourse people will say that. Good game design comes before good graphics.

If the gameplay is good but the graphics are shit, then it's still unfortunate to some extent. Dated graphics do stand out. So ofcourse people will be disappointed by that.

It has nothing to do with being fickle minded.
The ideal situation is good visuals and good gameplay design, as you can see in any of Naughty Dog's games. If any of those is noticeably lacking, then there will be disappointment (more so for gameplay than graphics)

thehitman13983286d ago

Do you know how big the game is???

and to be frank, fallout 4 is just fallout new vegas+. The + being a new dog companion

Palitera3286d ago (Edited 3286d ago )

I agree with BiggerBoss. Gameplay over graphics all time.

-

On a side note, did you guys realize that there are several sections on the trailer before the nuclear armageddon looking like gameplay, implying that we will be allowed to play on this era as well?

I gotta say, this is what is making me more excited. The lore is so awesome for before the vaults were the only escape.

ShinMaster3286d ago

At least it's not as ugly as Fallout 3 or New Vegas.

Emacs233283d ago

@BiggerBoss

Witcher 3 has brilliant story very few games can touch, great graphics with beautiful visuals.

So, take a look:
1) FO4 story will likely be mediocre. At least every other story from bethesda had nothing to rave about so far.
2) Visuals are boring (which is a specific of post-nuclear apocalypse), so not much work too, just reuse ideas from FO3.
3) Mediocre graphics, that jave just been confirmed (#2 too).

Gazondaily3286d ago

Haha. It had to happen.

The visuals are kinda underwhelming to be fair. It doesn't strike me as a next-gen title in terms of visual fidelity but Fallout has always been more than that, I think we can all agree.

TheCommentator3286d ago

This article is on point. The environments look great, but the character models practically look like cardboard cutouts. If they update the detail in the character models with things like TressFX and more polygons though it would make a big difference.

gangsta_red3286d ago (Edited 3286d ago )

Everything looked great to me.

I am positive that this game is going to be a MASSIVE open world sand box type of game and for that the graphics won't be ultra 4k Crysis. But c'mon...did you see the cities and environments. Sure the character models were a little suspect but such a minor irritation.

I'm not mad at that, I'd rather have a very huge open Fallout 4 world to explore than candy for the eyes.

joab7773286d ago

Lol! Who cares. It looks fine. I'd rather they use the time and engine resources to make a better game, not a prettier one.

And its funny. They show us actual graphics, which we have screamed for, and then...this article. Can't win!

thehitman13983286d ago

The reason for this article is out of reaction seeing fallout new vegas+ for the first time. Rather then seeing a new upgrade to the game.

Funny ppl jeep saying story...

To those ppl, "You do know how easy it is to use the same assets Ingame to make new story and at the same time not evolve the game in any other wway?????

Rainbowcookie3285d ago

I don't get it

for 6 or 7 years

Gamers: Where's Fallout 4? Where's Fallout 4? Where's Fallout 4?
Internet : Where's Fallout 4? It's gonna be Boston Where's Fallout 4?

2015: Boom ! I'm back baby!
Gamers : Yeah baby.

Internet: Why do the graphics suck?

What have become of gaming?

Is actually pretty fair for an open world game. Proper texture work and animation. Fairly high poly characters even.
The lighting looked fantastic in a few scenes as well.

As long as this engine isn't a coded mess, I am happy with the improvement on Bethesda's part.

DarkOcelet3286d ago

Lets be honest here, The Witcher 3 and MGSV both looks marginally better than Fallout 4.

But who cares? ITS FALLOUT 4 WOHOO!

Palitera3286d ago (Edited 3286d ago )

The graphics are not top notch, but I don't care. Graphics are not what we play Bethesda games for.

It is a very complex game and I'd choose stable performance in gameplay anyday.

_-EDMIX-_3286d ago

They both are exteremly much more graphically detailed then Fallout 4, but that was really to be expected. Fallout 4 conceptually is not based on such a thing. Its very complex in terms of its design and I don't think the would waste a lot of data graphically knowing just how versatile the engine needed to be.

Consider you can make your character, change clothes, put on add ons etc. So can others. It was to be expected and I'm fine with how it looks.

Fallout is about what you do, not really how it looks like.

thejigisup3286d ago

Mgsv graphics are way better. Though no one should care, the gameplay and story is where it's at

Professor_K3286d ago

The witcher or mgsv aren't as addicting as Fallout

joab7773286d ago

Exactly. Who cares. Give me a great game.

MadLad3286d ago

"Fallout 4 conceptually is not based on such a thing. Its very complex in terms of its design and I don't think the would waste a lot of data graphically knowing just how versatile the engine needed to be. "

None of that makes a lick of sense, nor holds water. Just saying.

That said, let's just be happy Bethesda seems to have developed a proper engine this time around.

I feel sorry for the author. Fallout was never one for impressive graphics, it's about the gameplay, always has, always will be.

OpieWinston3286d ago

People said the same about Skyrim. Bethesda designs games for consoles and then lets PC Modders enhance the experience.

Roccetarius3286d ago

Pretty much this. Ever since Oblivion it has been this way.

WellyUK3286d ago

Bethesda games have never been good looking, they only become good looking when modders get their hands on them

How nice of them to give us more control over graphical settings as a way to *completely* avoid taking accountability for the broken Xbox settings.

bondsmx18d ago

Well, I still crashed like 5 times last night within two hours. So there’s that.

anast17d ago

I had to stop. The game is not good. I'd rather play Skyrim and that game isn't that good either.

I Think It's About Time We Realize Fallout 4 Wasn't That Bad

Ahmed from eXputer: "2015's Fallout 4 received harsh criticism upon launching, but I think it was unwarranted and the game deserves more praise than it got."

helicoptergirl23d ago

It was totally that bad. I couldn't finish the campaign it was so bland and boring as I recall. Got so sick of it. 1000 stimpaks on hard. It is very rare that I play half a game and then just quit. I usually always finish it. But i was so bored with this game I just stopped and never went back and never regretted it. Just thinking about that game makes me shudder

Furesis23d ago

That's exactly what happened to me too lmao
Fallout 4 is not a fallout game period it's a bethesda game

Vits23d ago

The comparison with Skyrim is mind-boggling. Yes, Skyrim has streamlined many of the systems that Morrowind introduced. However, it did not tamper with the core of the Elder Scrolls franchise; it did not diminish the freedom and sense of exploration that made Bethesda RPGs famous. Fallout 4, on the other hand, did exactly that to the Fallout series. It eliminated what made Fallout such a beloved series to play. There are no consequences for your choices, no reason to explore, and barely any interesting set pieces in the game.

It's not terrible, but it's a painfully mediocre game in a franchise that typically doesn't produce such mediocrity. So that is why people see it as bad, the bar is just much higher.

anast23d ago

They both feel the same because they are, it's just that one has swords and magic and the other has swords and guns.

anast23d ago

I'm replaying it now. It sucks. I'm about 30 hours in and thinking about quitting again. I am so tired of the dialogue I just spam a random button because it doesn't matter. The upgrade just feels like a graphical mod, everything else is not good.

Good-Smurf23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

I couldn't play the game as-is it was insanely boring and grindy and the grind itself are not fun at all.
Mods helped me stomach the game a bit better but after a while I just stopped playing and uninstalled it because the game did nothing after the first few hours to give me any motivation to keep playing it, it just became a mindless looter shooter with obsession in settlement building and defending.
Compared to F3 and FNV, F4 was barely a mediocre game it wasn't bad but it's also very forgettable entry.

MrDead23d ago

It's not that bad after 300+ mods that fix it's issues and make the game fun... but lets not talk about mods right now as they are f****d.
