Metal Gear Solid V: A Completely Ludicrous Theory by DarXyde

With Metal Gear Solid V's release well over three months ago, now seems like a great time to entertain a completely ridiculous theory that likely has no legs to stand on, but hear me out.

[WARNING: METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN PLOT SPOILERS AHEAD]

***************************** ****************************** * *************

At the end of the game, we come to two realizations: the abrupt ending where fans were confused by Kojima's lack of closure and the fact that Kojima played us like a damn fiddle: throughout the entire game, Big Boss only made an appearance in the first and last missions where players instead took on the role of his phantom. A little unusual, right? This caliber of trolling, we can expect from Kojima. This well-played move both upset and satisfied the fanbase (depending on how you felt about the revelation). Regardless, certainly an interesting twist.

However, the longer The Phantom Pain stays on the market, the more things people unearth regarding easter eggs and content on the disc. Very interesting. The fact that an entire part of the game appears to be missing says a lot. And why would Kojima suddenly use a roman numeral to number his game? When you create Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid V shows an unusual shift. To use the "V" for Venom? Perhaps. But now that I have entertained my rhetorical position, I'll get to the conclusion: What if...Metal Gear Solid V is Metal Gear Solid 5's phantom? What if the meaning of The Phantom Pain extends to the idea that the game shows Venom's pain where the true Metal Gear Solid 5 features Big Boss?

"Whoa, put the brakes on for a second...that makes no sense. First of all, Konami owns the IP. Making a sequel would likely result in Konami suing the new Koji-Pro".

Well, yeah, but the ending is actually the very reason I may believe in the possibility of a real MGS5. In the ending, Ocelot hands Big Boss a copy of his phantom's passport with his face before becoming Venom Snake. Ocelot tells him that he will need to do something about his face when going into hiding as Venom continues his legacy as him. What if--bear with me on this one--what if, that sets up to use Big Boss' character without actually calling him Big Boss? If at the beginning of Kojima's new game, you're prompted to create a character? Now we know that, following going into hiding, he needs to maintain as little contact with his former allies as possible. That could effectively allow the narrative to develop without needing to use characters owned by Konami now. Kojima would only need to allow voice actors to return (like Troy Baker) or have "Big Boss" talk about "a rival he met back during the Cold War". A very sneaky setup, indeed. I certainly share doubts with a lot of people, but still, the idea does not seem that impossible. The ending and atmosphere of The Phantom Pain seem to allow for that. In essence, Kojima would be able to continue the narrative as a spiritual successor. The Phantom Pain, though a fun title, left many questions unanswered. Perhaps Kojima caught wind of developing tensions between Konami and himself early and prepared accordingly. 5 years seems pretty common nowadays for developing one game, especially when a game spans 5 platforms. And yet somehow, the idea of Kojima finally putting down Metal Gear without fully closing the loop seems unlikely. I would say him not trolling everyone comes off as 'out of character'. This theory likely has very little legs to stand on, but I do believe that, if Kojima wanted it, it can happen based on the simple fact that The Phantom's ending and exclusion of a third part suggests some closure would come from that and instead left a strong air of ambiguity for his own reasons.

...Just thinking out loud here.

Ethereal3072d ago

Interesting to say the least. Although, I personally believe he is moving on to new things.

Eamon3071d ago

The theory would hold water if Ground Zeroes didn't exist. But it does. And you do play as Big Boss in Ground Zeroes and the full title is Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes.

However, I do think that Kojima would have gone on and developed a Metal Gear Solid 6. Unlike with MGS4, he never stated MGS5 would be his last MGS game. A lot of people were expecting Gray Fox or a young Solid Snake to appear in MGS5. Also MGS5 is unfinished and a lot of stuff we were hoping to experience weren't there.

MGS5 was pretty much the story of Diamond Dogs led by YOU the player.

DarXyde3071d ago

Ground Zeroes was identified as a set up for The Phantom Pain though. Both games go by "V" instead of 5. It's possible Kojima wanted to bring closure, but changed very quickly once trouble began with Konami. I don't know about you, but part way through The Phantom Pain, I felt a tone shift. The game felt very different after a while.

I can't say I believe in my own theory, but it's possible. Very possible. The whole theme of phantoms and doubles played a very prevalent theme. It makes you wonder if this became Kojima's plan.

FullmetalRoyale3070d ago

I caught my reflection in the helicopter, when it was storming, so I knew what was going on about twenty hours in. I actually put the game down for a couple of weeks, because I have a connection with 'Naked Snake' and the notion that I wasn't him made me feel... idk.. Just had a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach about it.

ThanatosDMC3069d ago

Well, there's also the thing in which Peace Walker was called MGS5. Honestly, PW had a much more gripping storyline, casts, and dialogue compared MGSV.

Very interesting... and can we really put anything past Kojima? He's been 'trolling' us for years.

For the first time in a long time I have a hard time feeling excited for these events. Maybe it's because of all these massive lay offs and closures there hasn't exactly been good news since the start of the year.

Maybe come next week I'll get a little more excited but I dunno I just can't get too excited right now

thorstein5h ago

Maybe it will be an indie showcase.

Cancelling e3 and introducing some ridiculous events..
Times have changed.. to the worse

Is it just me or is there little to no buzz or marketing leading up to this compared to previous SGF?

Aquanauts Holiday at $500. Nice

I don’t collect games for their value I collect games I enjoyed playing. Many games I own are worth a lot of money but they must be games I want to play for me to purposely collect them. Most of this list isn’t games I would enjoy. I may have some of these games because I bought my friends PS2/3 Collection years ago and I never actually looked what was in it. It was a couple hundred games though still sitting in a box and I’m sure there are some good valuable games. I should go sift through it sometime.

Profchaos36m ago

I tend to agree for the most part rarity is linked to price
It's unusual that a rare game was popular with a few notable exceptions. Games released at the tail end of a consoles lifecycle which became popular years or decades later like little Samson on the NES or earthbound on SNES.
Or games that were banned after release in certain regions

Looking at this list there's nothing I'd be trying to collect either most of these games were fairly unpopular and bashed on their release leading to the scarcity seen now.
Especially NBA elite which I remember actually watching the news about how it got cancelled but had already shipped to retail it was so bad .

[Exclusive] Xbox Reaches Agreement With Batman: Arkham Trilogy Creators For A New AAA Game

Ex-Rocksteady directors' Hundred Star is collaborating with Xbox Game Studios Publishing for its first-ever AAA game.

Lightning777h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Highly doubt it'll be an actual Batman game that IP belongs to WB Games along with other DC property.

They're making an action adventure game. IMO I think it needs to be another Marvel game despite MS already have Blade as that action Marvel game. Dead Pool? Punisher?

Realistically it'll probably be a new IP entirely.

The_Hooligan6h ago

I agree with you. I think I'll be a brand new IP. Now it could be a superhero themed, kind of like infamous. Speaking of which, Suckerpunch needs to make one after Ghost 2.

neutralgamer19926h ago

would love a infamous collection for ps5/pc

Lightning775h ago

I definitely think it'll be super hero themed game 100%. Something MS needs in their portfolio.

ThinkThink3h ago

Please, no more super hero games.

PhillyDonJawn3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Dead Pool or Punisher would be amazing!!!
Don't tease me like that man lol. I see them making a new IP that's like an arkham knight clone

MIDGETonSTILTS176h ago(Edited 6h ago)

I hope these devs needed support to start/finish (like Stalker 2), vs are basically done with the game but wanted to secure an exclusivity-bonus because they know Xbox needs a system seller (like Titanfall).

It’s a bit strange that they’d rather invest in this game than Tangoworks’ TWO canceled projects; or just trust a single dev from their existing massive stable of talent to emerge with a system-seller themselves anytime soon.

Either way, it is just cool that we’ll likely get a new IP from the geniuses behind the Arkham Trilogy. I wonder how creative they’ll get now that they aren’t married to an established franchise.

darthv726h ago

This is about the former co-founders of Rocksteady and their new studio. So naturally it makes people think its Batman related with the way its worded, even though its not.

-Foxtrot5h ago

Exclusive? Sure

This year alone Microsoft has changed their plans so much with Xbox regarding multiplatform releases as they step closer to just being a full blown third party publisher and it's only been 4-5 months, imagine where we'll be once this game is finished. It will be a completely different landscape.

ThinkThink3h ago

I don't think MS will ever go completely full 3rd party with all of their games. I can see them looking towards expanding their own mobile store and moving into Mac as ways of expanding. I'm sure ms will bring more exclusives over to ps and nintendo, but I don't think it'll be as many games as you think it will. I hope I'm wrong.

Lightning772h ago

The ever contradictions thoughts and actions of MS definitely says otherwise MS changed up so much on the past 6 months of the year I lost count.

Though I'm more declined to believe they also won't go full 3rd party also.

But.

This year they're having Renaissance a super bowl of gaming with Gamepass this year. BO6, older ABK games, Avowed, Indy and other 3rd party exclusives all to grow and expand gamepass. If these games don't grow the service or grow only a little bit. Then you can fully expect MS to hit the red button and put everything everywhere. Satya will have full Xbox take over doing what he wants from that point on next year.

It's up to Xbox to advertise these games and gamepass in the next 6 months or so get the word out.

Profchaos2h ago

The more the news evolves the more I'm inclined to believe we will see MS embrace full third party status but not call it third party in their word soup ways.

It will be Xbox everywhere plays best on a Xbox.

Next gen Xbox is rumoured to be a reference design similar to the 3d0 where any company can make and sell it.

If you're offloading hardware costs to a third party yet still profiting from the games then you've cut out losses on the hardware you still have a store front that users can use and still make a 30 percent cut on that.

Your games sell for a profit on PS and Nintendo platforms and on Xbox reference hardware along with PC

You lose .kney on DLC and games sold on a competitor storefront they are seemingly already comfortable with this.

The ms bean counters are coming for the ROI that was promised they don't care if they kill the brand as it stands Xbox was never a profitable business it was always just done for reputation

PhillyDonJawn2h ago

@Lightning the would end the console then. No one would buy Xbox over PS at that point cause now you get both with just a PS. If GP flop for them, Logically, rolling back on GP would be the smarter than to do. No more day 1 title. Less quality titles. They'd lose subs but people would go back to buying the games.

Lightning7734m ago

@Philly They could scale back gamepass put Indies only, AAA 1st party games coming 4 to 6 months from release. The thing is MS will have to tell their fans to buy their games again and that's gonna take years and years to condition them to buy games again. MS will lose money from that also. They'll lose out on gamepass revenue, lose out on games sales because their fans don't buy as many games anymore.

I can't see them scaling back or axing gamepass it does make them allot of money, they just want more money from it. They're not gonna condition their fans to start buying games either.

As I said they'll go full 3rd party and yes you ate right, if they do that then there would be no reason to buy the next Xbox. I know j won't be, you better hope the next 6 months they advertise the games and GP there little hearts out because this could be it.

Spawn (as well as master chief) are the only characters I associate with Xbox. Are there more I can’t remember?

rlow14h ago

Gears is another big game one.

purple1014h ago

Yeh big game, do you know the name of the lead character. Or team of lead characters. I don’t

rlow13h ago

Marcus, Dom, Cole Train. And I can’t remember the fourth.

Profchaos2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Also the chick from gears 5 seems to pop up on all their modern advertising I can't remember her name either.

Cars also feature heavily in a Xbox ad it's always master chief front and centre with cars and maybe a gears character hanging around
