N4G: Report PM Spam

Update: Now is a good time to remind people that, if they use their username/password on N4G elsewhere, they can change it from their profile settings. Using a password manager can help tremendously with managing tons of accounts if you have a fear of losing track of your passwords.

Hello everyone.

There have been a lot of previously dormant accounts hitting people up via PM recently. Apparently someone is taking this moment at home during this shut-in time to use them for spamming.

If you get a PM with a link you don't understand, report the user and we'll do our best to ban them.

HAVA has been informed of this, but they are affected similarly to everyone else at this time and may not be able to get to it right now.

As far as I can tell, the four I received so far, none of them have ever even made a comment in the last decade plus. Someone's really playing the long-game.

click on their name -> click on the "!" on their profile page (should be next to the PM envelope). Then fill out the form to submit the report =]

You'd be surprised. Out of a thousand, maybe only one will. But compound that over many thousands, and you get a lot of people clicking. it's a numbers game.

Changed my password as soon as I go the second pm. I've been using a password manager for years now. Bruteforce won't work on my accounts, but some sites store the userdata unencrypted so you never know. If the data gets stolen even the safest password in the world won't help. Also never use the same passwords for different sites unless it's irrelevant if you lose the accounts. This goes especially for anything tied to your finances and your email account. And use 2FA whenever possible.

Go to the user’s profile and there should be a “!” Icon next to the PM envelope. Click the ! A and fill out the report.

You need to make an option to turn off PMs from public and only from friends or people that are a certain rank.
