Cross Game chat #57 - PSN Sucks!

PSLS: This week, we talk about why the PSN totally sucks!…ok, not really, but we will be talking about aspects of the PSN that bother us. Among the long list of things we don’t like are the loading times, organization of the store, the inability to listen to music and surf the store at the same time, and the lack of key features. PSN isn’t the only thing getting hate this week – the guys are divided over whether Sony’s latest commercial is their best yet, or one of the worst ideas Sony has had.

As much as I love the PSN, it is far from perfect

blumatt4613d ago (Edited 4613d ago )

It's far from perfect, yes, but it's free. lol The PSN you see today is not the PSN you'll see on the PlayStation 4. The PS4 will have a much nicer integrated OS, I'm sure. The PS3 is basically a beta test for the PS4.

@Micro_Sony
I honestly think that PSN will still be free like it is today. But, it will still have some form of PS+ too. There will many more features too. Playing online I believe will always be free on PlayStation.

Micro_Sony4613d ago (Edited 4613d ago )

Yeah but the question remains, will PSN be free on the PS4?

TBH I would gladly pay Sony money if it means a better PSN like how you said.

ftwrthtx4613d ago

The PSN does suck.....the money right outta my wallet

T3mpr1x4613d ago

I've got the same problem! :O

sikbeta4613d ago

Tell me about it, next week $12 out of my wallet to pay the GT5 complete DLC, next to buy the Dead Nation DLC, next...

longcat4613d ago (Edited 4613d ago )

gamesharing on psn makes it more attractive for me than any other similar service

sashimi4613d ago (Edited 4613d ago )

I just put $50 on my PSN account mid last month..its almost gone already lol. /wallet cries

Like I don't buy enough retail games already now I gotta add PSN games to the list.

PSN be taking my money!

"the inability to listen to music and surf the store at the same time"

Happy I'm not the only one. As far as multitasking is concerned, PSN sucks...but that has more to do with the PS3's hardware itself. Limited RAM I believe. As far as online play, what you get for free is awesome.

Btw, this is kind of offtopic, but why do people on N4G make it seem like PSN has a more "mature" community?

Within only two matches of UC3 yesterday, I was called "Denzel" and "Danny Glover".

This same person told someone to "suck a n*gger d*ck" after he was killed with a rocket launcher.

Did it ever occur to people that they only NOTICE more immaturity on XBL because more people have mics on XBL?

ftwrthtx4613d ago

There is immaturity everywhere regardless if it's even on a console. Our schools are full of it and how many parents let their kids go online and continue to spew the same garbage?.

Silly gameAr4613d ago

Yet, people want headsets packed in with the PS3. Go figure.

It would be cool to surf the store, and do other stuff, other than browse the web with your music playing though. More games need custom soundtracks also.

longcat4613d ago (Edited 4613d ago )

"Btw, this is kind of offtopic, but why do people on N4G make it seem like PSN has a more "mature" community? "

Price drops have put it in the range for teenagers.

When the console was $500+, PSN was mostly adults and a lot more civilized.

trouble_bubble4613d ago

"the inability to listen to music and surf the store at the same time"

As opposed to the inability on XBox to even rip my freakin videos and music from my USB flashdrive onto the hardrive in the first place, lol? Please, 250GB and I have to leave my flashdrive in. If PSN sucks at multitasking, wtf is that? I haven't bought a CD in years, why can I only rip from a CD on the Live dashboard?

I spend more time on the browser than in the PS Store and you can listen to music while on the browser, so I'm happy there. Really they're just splitting hairs. Personally I'd rather have the freedom of a browser than only a select buncha videos from MSN, MTV, IGN or Major Nelson answering newb questions from fans like how to get to account management.

"Did it ever occur to people that they only NOTICE more immaturity on XBL because more people have mics on XBL?"

When your two most popular exclusives only do like 4vs4 and 5vs5 it might seem like more people have mics simply because 4 people is half the players, *cough*. On modes like Domination on COD Black Ops there is literally no difference.

"Within only two matches of UC3 yesterday, I was called "Denzel" and "Danny Glover"

2 good actors. The horror. Least they didn't call you Cuba Gooding.

Hicken4613d ago

Pay him no mind. He's just trolling.

Honestly, I've still run into less "immaturity" on PS3 than 360, and I've been online on the 360 about 6 times since it came out. On he contrary, I've been online since I got my PS3 in 2008.

It's been addressed before, but people on PS3 have mics. It's more a matter of not saying anything if there's nothing to say. If the only people talking aren't speaking my language, have their music/TV up too loud, or are speaking on something that has nothing to do with the game, my mic stays off. If, however, I run into people who are actively trying to be strategic, friendly, or otherwise civil, then I'll turn my mic on and do likewise.

And yeah, not having my music play while I'm in the Store means so little to me. It's not like I'm there long enough for it to matter. I buy and download what I need, then I'm back to doing whatever it was I was doing beforehand.

JaredH4613d ago (Edited 4613d ago )

I find mic echoing or white noise to be a bigger problem on ps3 since the mic variety is way larger(more people have cheap Bluetooth headsets) but it's a good thing there's a mute function in most games. I find immaturity on both depending on the game I'm playing(Call of Duty has a lot while Resistance 3 doesn't have much at all).

Oh no. What a tragedy. Whatever shall I do? *Goes back to playing on PSN*.

jacobie744612d ago

i cant lie i never use my head set for my 360 yea its true xbl has a lot of stupid people on it maybe the whole mic thing is bad but its good for team strategy and talking to friends and fam

Sony CEO says although AI "has been used for creation," it's "not a substitute for human creativity"

"AI is not a substitute for human creativity. We position it as a technology that supports creativity. Creativity resides in people. We will continue to contribute to people's creativity through technology," the CEO said.

...not yet but 100% within the next 10 years!

..Then Sony will use it like the drop of a hat. They're no different to the others.

isarai5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

They used to be 😞 sure it was always a business, and money's always the priority, but they used to have a very strong stance on supporting artists and creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" was a phrase they touted a few times back in the ps1-ps3 era, a philosophy carried over from their music branch PlayStation was created from. It's not COMPLETELY gone, but it's barely there compared to what it was back then, i just want them to return to that.

Eonjay4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I am highly encouraged by their statement about human creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" is exactly what they are saying. But at the same time, I don't think people understand that Sony is a corporation. If they don't realize growth, they don't get to exist. When you say 'Sony', you are talking about a bunch of investors. To speak about them any other way is a illogical and incorrect. They haven't changed. They have been a group of investors since they became a public business.

isarai5d ago

Ugh, i really wish people would stop gambling people's livelihoods by turning a project/game into their political soapbox. Im all for statements and having your own opinion, but there's more people working on this than just druckman, ham fisting your political beliefs onto just seems inconsiderate for everyone elses job security when it can result in a failure due to people avoiding it for that reason.

I play games for escape, im so tired of nearly every AAA game blatantly dragging real world issues to shove in my face when I'm trying to take a break from it all. They don't even bother to be subtle about it, quite the opposite, it's blasted and force fed to you and it's just getting exhausting

Einhander19724d ago

People are taking a whole interview and cutting it down to clips that make him look bad and take what he actually was saying out of context. For example he also said things like this AI has "ethical issues we need to address"

-Foxtrot4d ago

@Einhander

Why defend him at this point?

It’s not taking things out of context, he said what he said.

Old ND would never talk about soulless AI taking over so many creative things they are well known for. The whole “ethical issues” is just a good PR spin people who push this crap fall back on to make their statements not seem as bad. So many AI lovers do this.

AI has no place is so many creative based things.

Einhander19724d ago

Well yeah, because everyone else is using it so they need to stay competitive. It's the same as paid online, they didn't want to go that route but their competition was making so much money they needed to add paid online just to keep up.

RaiderNation4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

AI will never replace humans in game development in terms of conceptualizing new games. Humans still need to come up with the ideas and what they want to implement. However much of the day to day menial coding could be AI driven to reduce production time and team size. I could also see AI being used for bug testing/optimization that could lead to better quality games at launch. I'm actually very optimistic about how AI can positively impact game development.

Good statement but hopefully this holds up

NotoriousWhiz4d ago

People that aren't software developers just don't understand the benefits of AI. People who's only exposure to A.I is the Terminator movie and other related sci fi films won't understand the benefits it provides.

It's not about replacing human labor. It's about making human labor easier.

Many years ago, I had laser eye surgery done. It was performed by a robot. The doctor took my measurements and calibrated the machine to make sure it would do what needed be done. And then the robot corrected my vision in 10 seconds.

15 years later and I still have 20/20 vision.

Eonjay4d ago

AI in and of itself is not a 'bad'. Money is bad. Money is evil, and corporations will do whatever they can to get more of it. They will find ways to implement AI to replace as may jobs as possible. This isn't even up for debate. It is the charge of the corporation to maximize returns for the investors. They have no choice. I'm a developer and I know that my job will absolutely be replaced. Therefore, I have decided to become an AI dev. AI has a lot of potential to help us solve problem on a scale most can't even imagine. The issue, as ever is that our monetary system only ever allows us to focus on greed and fiscal growth.

But I am a pragmatist. Perhaps an AI model can be built to help protect us from our most dangerous instincts and habits. And perhaps Congress can pass laws to protect us from people who would use AI to manipulate and control us (spoiler: they wont).

RaiderNation4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Progress is inevitable. Nobody driving cars today is complaining that the horse and buggy is no longer around. Yes, some jobs will be lost but guess what? With innovation comes new job opportunities. It's how the cycle of the job market works.

There are no "thoughtful" ads in video games, EA

There are no thoughtful ads in Video Games, EA. Leave them be.

I think the only type of games that can gets away with it would be sport games, having those sponsors ads on the side like on real life.

But don't put freaking Doritos ads in Star Wars or something, it breaks the immersion. If it is a pop-up ads, then big no.

Hofstaderman11d ago

EA can thoughtfully eff themselves.

Makersbreath211d ago

EA coming back for the crown of being perceived as the worst company in gaming.

Chocoburger10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

One of my favorite series is the THPS franchise, and it was packed with ads, but it didn't bother me. Posters for skateboard companies, JEEP, and Nokia phones. It did sort of fit in with the game world, but that was the past, these days ad would be intentionally intrusive or unskippable loading screen type of imagery. Ugh, I know EA would do it in a horrible fashion. Screw them.

Report: Sexual Misconduct Investigation Conducted at EA, Suspects Named and What They Did Revealed

EA senior staff has been investigated for sexual misconduct involving female coworkers, and these said people have been named publicly.

isarai17d ago

Aye just call Phil, i mean he somehow made Bobby Kotick's scandal disappear and gave him a few million dollar high five on the way out.

Cacabunga16d ago

I wonder if it will be censored with some in game ads.

MrBaskerville14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Microsoft did, Phil Spencer played a minor part. He instigated the buyout that led to Kotick escaping all his controversies while getting a golden handshake.

Someone on Twitter calculated that the people hired in Tango and Arkane Austin could get a decent salary for roughly 17 years for the money Kotick was paid.

InUrFoxHole13d ago

Yeah some thing tells me Kotics $ was already guaranteed before MS made the deal. As for the studios... Let's be honest here... none of those studios made system sellers.

XiNatsuDragnel17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

EA about to go down like Activision and then Phil saves the day saying.this is good for the industry and consolidation will help create competition. /s.

MrBaskerville14d ago

Then they shutdown Codemasters and studio behind Jedi Survivor.

Atleast they could hardly do much damage that EA hadn't allready done. EA has shut down most of their studios by now.

ravens5216d ago

What's up with all these horny creeps. You gon be horny, fine. Just not at work take care of that shit before you go in. Rub one out if you have to. Don't be a creep at all. ESPECIALLY at work. But don't be one AT ALL.

Extermin8or3_16d ago

I mean part of the issue is that things transpired outside of work....

MrBaskerville14d ago

That's the thing he mentioned about not being a creep at all.

KwietStorm_BLM16d ago

You think deviants care where they are? Work sometimes makes it an even better situation for them because they can abuse their power.

mudakoshaka16d ago

Nerds think they are Gods when they are making video games.

NotoriousWhiz16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

"it seems that according to EA, given the events transpired outside of work between two adults, and the fact that once investigation has started that the alleged perpetrators didn’t do it again, the investigation is considered closed. [...] The victim still has to work with the people that harassed her."

Yep, EA is disgusting.

Extermin8or3_16d ago

I mean the fact stuff happened outside of work puts EA in quite a difficult position legally. These women don't seem to have reported the matter to the police which kinda ties EA's hands on what they can do. If they don't file reports of the crimes then yeah from EA's perspective it is stuff that happened outside of work. The only exception is the guy that apparently referenced things in the slack channel for work, spending on what he said proving it may be very hard and he may well be able to get away with plausible deniability. I don't like EA and I think these people need to be dismissed but without any legal action being taken, EA can't really do much without risk of being sued themselves for unfair dismissal etc.
