According to sales figures from Microsoft and Sony, sales for Xbox 360 are at 41.7 million units and sales for PS3 are at 41.6 million units. It’s hard to believe that only 100,000 units separate two consoles who once had a huge disparity in sales, including one who’s future was nearly in jeopardy. Here’s a look at how the PS3 ended up cutting the 360′s lead down to nothing, and why it has as much to do with Microsoft as it does Sony.

i've been saying this since day one, MS sale numbers mean nothing.

i have had three 360's that died on me. according to MS, the two 360's i received free from Best Buy were sold to me because they came off the sales floor. BUT I DID NOT PAY FOR THEM. i got them because Best Buy has a great warranty/return policy. I bought one yet I count for three and now my cousin said that the last one doesn't even work any more.

the amount sold doesn't truthfully represent the amount sitting in homes today. the high failure rate and the banned consoles helped their numbers more than most people realize.

It is amazing to when you even are generous and estimate the number of replacement Xbox 360s that have been bought.

50-60 percent failure rate. The duplicate Xbox 360 has to be easily in the 5-10 million or more range. Just about every Xbox 360 owner talks about 3-4 different consoles they have owned. Buying new ones each time because they heard the new model finally fixes the RRoD problems.

I'm pretty sure that Microsoft reps wouldn't say "screw" a rival - it's not professional. And could you provide a link for where they said that consoles are for hardcore gamers ONLY, because the 360 has supported casual gaming since it's launch.

Microsoft backed HD-DVD. Should they have said that it was inferior? Besides - it was good tech that didn't catch on. Blu-ray is better, but it's not like there was a huge enough disparity to make this a laughable claim or anything.

HDMI is not, in fact, needed. HD output is possible through both component and PC connections. It is a nice option though.

Microsoft has never denied the existence of the RROD. Their extension of the 360's warranty to 3 years supports this.

Huh? This statement doesn't make sense. If you implying that a large portion on 360 sales are due to RROD, I redirect your attention to the 3 year warranty. Sure, some sales can be attributed to replacement, but it's probably not as large a percentage as you would hope.

Bioshock was a timed exclusive. It was a smart play on Microsoft's part because when it was released on PS3 over a year later, it sold nowhere near as well, and any multiconsole owners who wanted to play it bought it for the 360 because it was the only option for a time.

The first is paid for by the customer.

It's obvious, you get a Blu-Ray player and a pretty good gaming system in 1 package only for $299. Imagine if it were to drop to $199... History is repeating its self. DVD didnt really take off til PS2 came out. Similar to now PS2 was the cheapest player around. It wasnt the best but it pushed the new tech. If MS would have put HDDVD in the box I dont think BLU RAY would have won.

I am pretty sure the BD was always going to beat HD-DVD. Warner Bros was always the key figure in determining the outcome because:

1) Warner Bros was always pro Sony, having collaborated in a several upcoming movies. That part is political.

2) Warner Bros saw that Sony Pictures was always going to favour BD saw that was a large part of the market already adopting one format.

3) Warner Bros being the real key is that they own 75% of the Hollywood catalogue, so with Sony Pictures also being a Top 3 Movie Producer and choosing BD, there would be no format war which would have cost Warner Bros.

Warner Bros basically knew all along what it was going to do, and being the undisputed big boy of movies it was always going to side with another Top 3 producer of Movies... who happened to be a company owned by a format manufacturer.

Universal, the Number 2 producer, likely had the same thinking as Warner Bros, but being so much smaller respectively there was far less attention from the media about their decision.

HD-DVD was dead in the water from the start because it did not have an owner that was involved in the film and gaming industries, and that lack of guaranteed adoption from day 1 cost the format dearly.

It was beneficial at the start for there to be a minor war, the producers get some double sales from people who bought HD-DVD... but in the long wrong it would lose the money as going for one way production reduces costs.

HD-DVD was never going to win. Toshiba need to buy into either a gaming firm or movie firm if they want to stand a chance in the next format war, should there be another format war.

Both companies report in exactly the same way...sold to retailers. There is no difference - except that Microsoft used to report shipped (and maybe still do) and Sony changed their reporting to sold to retailers (it's in their reports). Microsoft may have done the same now.

All three companies report numbers the same way. Sold to retail is the most accurate numbers they track since they know exactly how many units are shipped from their warehouses. No retailer orders an extra couple million for storage, so it is absurd to think otherwise.

Years ago SOny reported numbers produced. They now report numbers sold to retail like everyone else.

The differance between the two consoles is irrelevant. This holiday Microsoft will have doubled their previous outings sales. Microsoft and Nintendo have both been aggressively gaining market share. Reality is Nintendo and Microsoft have tripled and doubled their sales base while Sony has recaptured less than 1/3 of theirs so far. If you want to call Sony being within a few million units of Microsoft a "win", God bless you.

If Sony has sold the same amount as Microsoft, either Microsoft is doing really well or Sony is doing really not well. Last gen Microsoft and Nintendo sold around 25 million consoles each compared to Sonys 150 million. Nintendo has sold 3 times as many so far this gen and Microsoft will be close to 2 times as many this holiday season. Sony will be close to 1/3 of the way after 4 years of sales.

I'm not going to defend Vgchartz, their 360 number is 500K too high and their ps3 number 500K too low but surely someone must see that booch/rigmaster/flatulentghost etc (he has at least 6 accounts) is the same person. Also Sony did not say they were going to give sold figures in 2006. They did change the way they reported their quarterly figures though, because before they reported their 'shipped numbers (to them that was to their retailers). They announced they were moving in line with nintendo and reporting their sold figures (sold to them is retailers, as is every other company). Many peple included booch/cahill/etc etc latched onto this as sony reporting sold = sony reporting to consumers. No company would do that,in thier quarterly figures - investors only want to know about retailers as its the retailers who give them the money and it would look bad to report lower numbers than they could. Besides reporting to consumers isnt as accurate as 100% definate figures they would get from reporting their sales to retailers. That is crucial for quarterly reports as comapnies cannot estimate or lie. There is no evidence that would prove this wrong, because it is true. People who constantly claim Sony are report sold to consumer are doing them a disfavour because they are just spreading mistruths.

Additionally Booch/etc etc yes MS did overship to get to 10 million and they only had to ship less than a million the next quarter as a consequence. However do you really think the big bad MS are the only ones to ever do this? All companies have done it including the big 3 when sales aren't quite as good as they were expecting and they needed to meet their targets. To claim otherwise shows a lack of understanding of business practice. For example, all 3 companies will have overshipped for this quarter in their reports as they anticipate huge christmas demand. All 3 probably have actual consumer sales up to 2 million below what they have reported to have SOLD to retailers.

Anyway as for the PS3, well done. It is the best console this gen and deserves to be ahead of the 360. I'm pleased that Nintendo managed to turn their fortunes around because I was worried for them. Anyway the PS3 should be ahead of the 360 in sales after this christmas and its lineup for 2011 looks stellar. An amazing time to be a ps3 owner.

Firstly, the 360 was a broken console right up until this year when they re-released it. Microsoft had no idea how to fix its overheating problem, it wasn't just the first year of consoles that had this problem it was practically every single year thereafter which was costing M$oft a billion dollars a year in replacing consoles that were in warranty.
But really, its amazing how immature the games industry is - everything from gamers to the gaming press, it really shows how childish the entire games consumer industry is. Sony's initial library wasn't remarkably lackluster, it was a hell of a lot better than any starting lineup of any other console, people often forget that because they compared Sony's lineup to the 360's 2nd yr lineup, but if you actually compare the initial lineups not only to the 360, but also the original xbox, the ps1 and ps2 it was a lot stronger with Resistance and Motorstorm not behind it.
As for the immaturity of the industry, its amazing how when a company comes out with a product that is clearly superior and therefore justify a higher price, the gaming press and gamers alike cried and whined louder than any baby you've heard in a grocery store. Just because last year's model was cheaper doesn't mean this year's model is relatively similar in quality - I think everyone agrees that in so far the best ps3's were the launch ones with the extremely rich feature set. It was as if they had come up with a supercar that was cheaper than all the other super cars (blu ray players) but people kept comparing it to last year's family sedan, and complained the price was higher. The gaming press was the biggest culprit of the demonization of Sony for actually trying not to go completely bankrupt on a more advanced console - if they sold the ps3 200 bucks cheaper they wouldn't have the cash flow to sustain it and the playstation division would be bankrupt. Is that what spoiled brat gamers and gaming press people would want?

3 cpus = 360 isn't that far off of the ps3's 1 cpu and 8 spu's, graphics cards can be argued close ( or 360 better, i understand) BUT where MS screwed up big time was the storage device, they could have waited until the tech was there and made they're own in house 20 gig disc if they had to... but now rage is missing wastelands, we're seeing linear FF games, the list goes on, and now the ps3 even has more RAM than the 360, split or not split, Naughty dog, Santa monica, Infinity ward, insomniac, guerilla, don't seems to hinder at that, but the almost 80 additional mbs of RAM puts the ps3 above the 360 and we have a 512 vs 600 ( which is pretty significant)... but yes i bought the 360 on launch because i was impatient, loved the games then, it broke 3 months after the ps3 came out, and it wasn't until last month i bough the slim 360 for reach and hopefully gears 3... I found myself owning a PS3 mainly for niche titles ad Obscure Japanese games, more than anything, but it took it some years to finally appeal to me.

I used my 360 to hell and back before- but now I find myself playing more with my PS3.

The only thing that midly entertained me on it was the "gladiator" game, and even so, I can't possibly imagine myself using it for a beat em' up game- Waggling and waggling for hours is NOT fun, and that's something the Wii taught us.

Besides, my room is pretty small to have correctly use Move, and I would NOT like to have to place my TV on the Living room or something.

If it means anything to you, read Sony's financial reports. The very first two quarters the PS3 was on sale they reported shipped. Then, Sony noted in their financial statement that they would start reporting sold to customer. They adjusted the first two quarters down and now when you see a release from Sony showing historical data there is always a footnote at the end that

"Beginning with Q1 FY07, the method or reporting hardware and software unit sales has been changed from shipments to recorded sales."

This issue has been clarified many times before. I'm frankly surprised it's still being brought up.

The 'shipped' (or sold to retailers) you refer to is on a peripheral device (Move).

The sold to customers is for PS3 systems.

The first - shipped quote - was a press release that was merely PR (and later clarified). The second set of numbers/example is used in quarterly reports for which the use is entirely different (they're legal documents primarily there for shareholders - with footnote explanations about what exactly they contain).

I'm beyond caring on the debate on what Sony's numbers mean (people can pick the 400k or 3 million gap figure), but conflating the two in this case (a piece of early PR on production of Move, and official legal documents for shareholders regarding PS3 system sales) is a bit of stuff and nonsense.

People are trying to create a 'fog' because they'd like to have the Move seen as a failure - and 2.5 million shipped (sans a huge market - Japan) in one month, with retail calling for more and production scales ramped up twice already, clearly is a success. The irony is that those using Sony's PR release complaining of it's use of 'shipped' (in these limited and distinct circumstances for Move production/retail demand) are generally doing so as fans of the 360 - which, to my understanding, MS has only ever used given 'shipped' numbers for.

What people STILL get confused about (and try to bolster their misinformed bias about Sony "sales") is accessories (PS Move, MotionPlus & Kinect) as they are ALWAYS tracked as SELL IN. So Sony, Ninty & even MS using a SEPARATE tracking method for ACCESSORIES is perfectly acceptable.

In all honesty, the PS3 was always gonna catch the 360. I dont think anybody thought it would have taken this long. You got to remember, that the Xbox brand was the underdog coming into this generation with or without a one year head start.

The Playstation fanbase is so huge from the two previous gens, it was eventually gonna catch up. Who knows the real figures are, but it is certainly close.

The PS3 wasn't really being used to its full potential by Devs until the last couple years really. Of course there were gems like MGS4, but those were rare. Now its like every exclusive does something that another exclusive didn't do. Sony's first party studios continue to take each new game to another level.

I know EVERYONE is talking about the upcoming holiday season and how well Microsoft is going to do with kinect. YES kinect is indeed going to sell like water in a desert this holiday season, but Sony really is the company who is stepping their game up. They have one solid game this holiday season which they know will move units. GT5 of course. But thats it.

Everything else is laid out throughout all of 2011. Sony proved this wasn't a sprint but a marathon by catching up to the 360. Next year seems to be all the same. 360 rushing out the gate, putting all its eggs in one basket known as kinect, while sony has a long list of baskets known as exclusive games. This is why they have been able to catch up.

The reason the PS3 is catching up (or in this articles' case "closed the gap") with the 360's 1 year lead, is because it is still sold as the best and most supported blu-ray player on the market.

Anecdotally every single one of my uncles, my grandfather, and my father in law have PS3's and neither of them have purchased a single game. However they are more than happy that it connects to and updates itself over wireless and doesn't require any special discs to update.

That being said if this article is true and PS3 has closed the gap the article fails to mention that most multi-platform games sell more (in more than half of the cases "30-40% more" -NPD) than the PS3. If PS3 has closed the gap PS3 owners are not buying as many games as the 360.

Also PS3's top exclusives sales combined for (MGS4, Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Resistance 2, Heavy Rain, and Killzone 2) are still less than the number of Halo 3 copies sold in 1 month. Also the most popular multi-platform game in history COD:MW2 sold almost 25% more on 360 (PS3-8.8M, 360-11.8M).

People still fail to realize that the PS3 was sold as a blu-ray player first and a game console second, and the 360 is simply a home game console which is why it sells more games. Go into any Best Buy/Walmart/Target and ask for the best blu-ray player and you will be directed to the PS3.

Just incase you are a fanboy and disregarded the title, I haven't turned on my 360 today, however I just finished watching the Aliens trilogy on my PS3. Don't hate.

That's all well and good when the PS3 was the cheapest blu-ray player on the market, but this hasn't been the case for about 2 years now... the 360 has more units in the US which is why NDP shows higher sales, but it's more leaned towards PS3 in Europe, bar UK, and even UK is more even sided.

The next problem is the exclusives, PS3 just has more of them. That's fact and completely and inarguable point. The next issue is that Halo and Gears are the only two franchises than sell the gangbuster numbers certain people like to claim is true for all 360 franchises. Fable? Mass Effect Forza? More in line with the MGS4, Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 numbers. Gran Turismo 5 is the Halo/Gears of the PS3 and will be the high seller you expect but just because two games sell well, don't apply it to the whole 360 library.

Yes Xenovis. Multi-Console games do indeed sell more on the 360 these days. However just think for a second why that is...What choice have 360 gamers been given? Besides Gears and Halo, the other exclusives tend to sell just about the same as PS3 exclusives or less.

However, while PS3 can tout having a VERY large number of exclusives, the 360 cannot. 360 gamers dont really have the option of choosing an exclusive over a multiplat. When I walk into a store and I see my choice of another Call of Duty game or something like Heavy rain, or God of War, the choice for me is obvious. I won't deny PS3 did horrible post launch for a while and blu-ray was still struggling to gain some ground. Sony did the smart thing in promoting it's system as a blu-ray player because never do I ever recall it solely being called a video game console. I'm not sure about PS1 but since PS2 its always been promoted as a "Computer Entertainment System", people just don't realize that because we simply see it as a video game console. So seriously whats wrong them selling their system on the sole reason to entertain their consumers in different ways.

And as far as sales go for Sony exclusives, its true that they may never hit the sales mark that games like Halo will ever hit(till maybe GT5, when ever it releases), but as of right now their average scores are higher than the average scores of the 36o's exclusive. In no ways do I hate on the 360, I love it. Games like Lost Odyssey, Alan Wake and XBLA games like trials HD are the number one reason I still hold on to it. At the end of the day the exclusives PS3 offers cater to my taste and I prefer playing online for free. Plus with all the features the PS3 offers it truly "Only Does Everything".

Problem with the "people buy it as a Blu-Ray player" argument: in 2009, the PS3 slightly BEAT the 360 in total software sales, despite supposedly having less hardware units in the wild.

Translation: The PS3 has a better attach rate. PS3 owners buy more games on average than 360 owners.

Of course, this could be a result of some sort of numbers fudging by MS in how they handle RRoD replacements, but who knows?

As for me, my PS3 library is easily twice that of my 360's.

You'd have a point if your software attached rate was a 10:1 ratio. But it's not. On the 360 the most average multi-plats only sell a few hundred thousand more than the PS3 depending on the genre of the game (FPS vs RPG). Other games like FFXIII sold twice as many on the PS3 as the 360.

If you are going to isolate total sales push on FPS your point even loses more credibility. The small edge that some 360 sales get over the PS3 are negligible. But that's not significant enough to claim that Blu-ray is the only reason PS3 sells. If that was the case then Call or Duty, Red Dead Redemption, Black Ops, sales on the PS3 wouldn't be as high as they are today. Even your PS3-8.8M, 360-11.8M for MW2 tally shows that 8.8 MILLION copies isn't something to be ignored. What? I thought you said that PS3 was only for Blu-rays! Ha!

And also note that the 10+ MIL marketshare lead the 360 in the USA alone helps those FPS software sales. But that's an anomaly that will soon change since that lead is shrinking.

I knew something was up with the numbers. I was at at the gamestop near my job. Before i entered there was one guy walking out with the move bundle(I talked to him about it). Then, inside there was far more interest in the PS3 library. Then i was talking to the guy behind the counter about Demon's Souls, etc. On top of that, most of my friends have either just a PS3 or both systems. My cousin has a MS Xbox, but he was telling me that all his friends had PS3 and he couldn't play COD with them.(I told him to get a PS3) This makes me think that their were and still are ongoing misperceptions about the popularity(and other things) of Sony's brand here in the states especially.(maybe UK and elsewhere too) However, MS hype/smear/marketing tactics are losing some of their power here and Sony and PS3 are continuing to gain momentum. Not all consumers (even here in the US) believe the hype and make uneducated purchasing decisions. Maybe this economy is causing some to evaluate things a bit more and make smarter decisions(IMO) with their money, etc.

if Microsoft took that extra time improve the 360's hardware where would they be now? I was surprise to see how aggressive they were at the beginning of this generation but it seemed they began to slack off when they thought their one year lead was going to keep them ahead of the PS3. Seriously Sony had the most to lose this gen and I must say that their rocky start really humbled them. Unless Kinect becomes the 360's second coming I seriously can't see how Sony can keep up with Sony's onslaught of exclusives. Sony took some great and rather risky gambles this gen and did the smart thing in investing in house studios and their second party studio partners. It started with a boom than it simmered down. Sales in Japan slowed down considerably after the first couple of weeks. Lucky enough for them 360 was dead in Japan and it helped them. Nintendo was obviously kicking its ass and 360's ass. Microsoft were pretty much outselling them in America around 2:1 nearly every week (according to VGchartz which we quickly began to pick up on their bs). In Europe they did well. First quarter after their first fiscal year they sold 300,000 units and the next quarter they sold 1.3 million, thus giving us a grand total of 1.6 million for the first half of the fiscal year sold after their initial fiscal year. In software sales the amount they sold sometimes barely passed the amount of units sold, therefore giving it a horrible attachment. 360 crushed them in software sales and attachment rate. Exclusives where falling left and right. Good games where hard to find. It took them how long to fulfill their promises, in game XMB anyone? The PSN store was horrible at that time because it was web-based. Sony's game division lost 1.97 billion US dollars due to poor sales and production cost. Ken Kutaragi retired from his position. PS3 was being slammed by the media and developers. PS3 dev kits were hella expensive thus not many developers could get their hands on them easily. The cell processor being so new was not being used well thus giving us poor ports or poorly developed games.

Yeah according to all that, the first year for PS3 was best start ever(sarcastic). So yes they did have a rocky start. Really if you think about their momentum truly began at least I believe holiday '07. Despite Halo 3's release they still held up strong that year though not a 100% sure but they may have out sold them that holiday.

I went and saw that little link to IGN's X360 page where MS explains how it was 3x more powerfull than PS3, way back in 2005...and look where we are now. If where are talking about exclusives, theres no comparison...PS3 obliterates anything excluysive or multiplatform on X360 and the multiplat games only barely have an edge because its so much easier to develop for X360....

Now, when you take this MS talk (back in 2005, I know) on how X360 was so much more powerfull than PS3 and we see today where REALITY stands, its a no brainer too see how this generation racing would be.

MS may have bet too high by launching a hald arsed hardware first, hoping to win in the 1/4 mile run...but Sony is in for the Nürburgring long lap/race.

If you were on N4G years ago when the 360 launched, the articles were full of comments like "360 is doomed once PS3 launches" and "MS sucks for ditching the Xbox so quickly, nobody wants to spend more money on a new console so soon"... and yet the masses have. Nobody thought MS would make a dent in the video game market, being the underdog. People were telling MS to stick to software.... and now they're doing pretty good with the 360. Yes, but after the PS3 launch you heard the opposite, "The PS3 is doomed." Especially after all the 3rd party developers went multi-plat.

The articles were always written in a way that made it seem like Sony lost an exclusive and the 360 gained an exclusive. But it wasn't true. It was that the 3rd party companies decided that it was best for them to go multi-plat. Not exclusive with any console. Yet, the headlines always were written in a pro-360 way.

Even Gamespot was accused of bias.

When a PS3 3rd party developer went multiplat, the headline was, "PS3 loses exclusive!"

Then in 2008, when the 360 lost some exclusives, the headline was, "so-and-so developer company goes multi-plat." No mention of 360. See the difference? Biased journalism.

Well, now it's time to pay the piper. All those 360 fan boys will pay for the lies and deception!

id just like to throw something out there - here in Australia, Sony are giving away another 25k PS3s with the purchase of Bravia TVs. this is, by my last count, the 5th time theyve done this. last time there were 30k free PS3s. the time before that there were 50k free PS3s. the first time they did it there wasnt even a limit on how many they were going to give away! so of the million or so PS3s in australia, theyve given away potentially half of those for free.

the bottom line is that both companies manipulate figures to make themselves look good.

and also, id like to point something out - neither Microsoft nor Sony know how many consoles are actually sold to consumers. they cannot track it. they can tell how many consoles have connected to the net, or registered warranties etc, but they cannot track sales. the only numbers they track are how many they ship off to distributers - thats it. Sony have NEVER given 'sold to consumer' numbers like the fanboys like to keep saying. why? because they dont know how many are sold to consumers unless every single shop that they distribute consoles to sends them figures every week/month/quarter with exact numbers. they dont do this, so sony have no idea. theyre just like microsoft in that regard.

the PS3 was always going to overtake the 360, it was just a matter of time. this generally happens when your predecessor outsold the competition by 5:1. but it hasnt done it yet, despite what the fanboys want to tell you. Sony say theyve sold 41.6 million, Microsoft say theyve sold 44.6 million: thats a 3 million difference. Microsofts 42 million figure seems to have had the rest of the sentence - "in 35 countries" - ignored by sony fanboys. the 360 is sold in more than 35 countries.

and for crying out loud - the fact that Microsoft have held off the PS3 for 4 WHOLE YEARS is a testament to how well theyve done. 4 YEARS is almost the length of a regular console generation. its not like sony caught them in 6 months - its taken them 4 years to get within 3 million sales. theyve only made up a little over 1 million sales per year.

It seems you may be in business or at last taking classes? Just because Sony has to report units sold to stores, who is to say that they do not report it to shareholders, are they obligated to do so? Wouldn't shareholders be happy to hear the amount sold? Unless you are a shareholder or work for Sony's for lack of a better term "business team"(someone please find the right phrase) how would you know what Sony tells their shareholders.

And those figures you use, seeing as both Sony and MS are both willing to lie to make them look better should be taken with a grain of salt. 44.5 million shipped according to vgcharts and about 42 million sold in 35 countries according to Major Nealson. Now whether those numbers for Sony are either shipped or sold is hard to tell because according to Sony's annually/quarterly units sold as told by this chart http://www.scei.co.jp/corpo... its indeed 41.6 million sold. Now if we take Major Nealson's 42 million and add up all the quarterly selling of hardware which Sony posted on their own site which should add up to 41.6 million which is the same that vgchartz claimed to be units shipped, it would look like this:

MS as according the Major Nealson: 42 million (chances are it may be rounded to or a close approximation)

Difference: around 400,000

Now this is all based on if Major Nealson is right about 42 mil being sold and Sony is not lying about units sold and rather than it being units shipped. Though I do prefer Sony over MS and still love the 360, facts don't bother me and you have to realize that facts can be easily spinned on both sides.

To be honest, the Playstation is a stronger brand name then Xbox, its been around much longer and has a stronger following I feel. Where the Xbox is doing very well is the US a place Sony seems to be having a hard time in, and the place they need to improve the most in. Xbox on the other hand needs to try to get some ground in Japan and several EU places. It gets even more complicated when you start talking about where those units are sold. Xbox having a larger install base in the US is much more important then Sony having a larger install base in Japan for example. There is so much involved in those numbers that with out all the facts and details none of us on hear can really comment or even guess what they mean.

At the end of the day they both are doing well, MS is increasing there install base from the last gen and Sony is picking up steam and selling more and more each year. Its really nothing but good news for both sides. It is too bad very few gamers understand that.

The software sales show a much clearer picture. Sony had something like 113 million in their report... MS had like 102 million.

Either there were a lot more titles released on the PS3 during that time, or the number of actual in-use PS3s exceeds the number of in-use 360s these days -- maybe a little bit of both. In the end, its the software sales that matter. HW is not profitable... unless you are Nintendo.

At least a few people know that Microsoft counts shipped as sold and Sony went through a big effort in 2007 to emphasize they count sold-through to retailers as sold. The difference is that Microsoft counts units in shipping transit, in intermediate warehouses and retailer stock areas including their warehouses, as sold. Also, Microsoft still practices channel stuffing, part of the practice forcing retailers to keep unsold inventory in their stock rooms in order to sell other Microsoft products like Windows and Office. That, and Microsoft channel stuffs for the holidays which is where this 2 million difference is coming from. Major Nelson is reporting what is confirmed has been sold and Microsoft corporate is reporting what they have shipped. Sony also uses intermediate warehouses to hold inventory for the holidays but does not count those as sold until they are received by the retailer.

Sony releases their numbers and does not spend time bragging about how they will kick the competition into orbit.

MS on the other hand, constantly spews numbers they wish they sold, and fanboys believe it because Sony does not react to it. When Sony releases their numbers, fanboys are in shock, because they though Sony's non reply to the MS PR BS was a sign that they were hiding something or that they were scared.

Simple as that. That is why the Move sales were such a shock to the fanboys. Sony said they were expecting modest sales. VGC said 300,000 - fanboys though Sony being quiet must mean that VGC had it right. When Sony released some numbers the fanboys went into denial.

I believe PS3 will beat Wii also. It's a long scratch but I believe it'll happen becuz I don't see the Wii and 360 being around longer than PS3.

i have to disagree with u i think then next xbox will be coming within the next 1- 2 years now for the wii the ps3 will not catch up to the wii because if the wii sell between 20 to 30 k in japan alone and the European and america alone then hell no but watch out for the wii2 that a sleeper

Some ppl might ask why PS3 and Xbox360 fanboy owners care about salles.

it is not too hard to understand that if a console is winning it will gain more support , more devs and companies will want their games launching on the "winning"console.

What I expect and hope that happens soon is that the PS3 puts the 360's salles in 2011 to ashes so we will continue to recive more good games since this will force MS to announce the Xbox720.

Hopefully it will have a blu-ray disc drive already installed on the console .This way the 3rd party games will have a chance to be "better"then they are right now limited at 6.8G size.

360 got the 6th place (surpassing the N64 & PSX just like that)

Wii got the 10th place

PS3 got the 15th place (teh lamezt console only in U.S.A.)
