L4D DLC pricing not Valve's decision

Valve's Chet Faliszek has told Eurogamer that upcoming downloadable Left 4 Dead 1 expansion Crash Course costs money on Xbox Live because Microsoft insisted upon it.

I told you guys the same thing like a month ago when it was announced.

http://n4g.com/NewsCom-3742...

Feral Gamer5385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

Well, this article was published today. Furthermore the L4D1 was a direct copy from Eurogamer. But I changed to make you happy. As for a better picture, I can't find the funny ones that everyone else around here has, but I found a Left 4 Dead. When I submitted the article, I only had moments before someone else would've stumbled across it and so I was in a hurry :(

I'm new here so give me a break, please. I don't know where people get fun pix and I thought you're supposed to directly copy the original titles.

*EDIT*
Yay my first approved story!

Pandamobile5385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

I didn't mean this was a dupe or anything. But it's been known for years Valve's stance on paid DLC. I had to try to quiet a sh1t-storm in that thread from a month ago with articles where Valve said that they'd never charge for DLC if they had the choice and that the price was MS's doing.

(also approved)

evrfighter5385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

I also remember that article. This is from an interview by Doug Lombardi where he said he would like Valve's DLC to be free. (This was a LONG time ago btw)

"We contacted Valve to clarify and their VP of marketing Doug Lombardi informed us that, "The platform holder owns the final call." So just as we'd suspected, whether or not we see these maps for free is indeed up to Sony and Microsoft"

The-Warranty5385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

Sucks for 360 owners. But its M$ we shouldn't be surprised.

cmrbe5385d ago

as i said then. The fact that its free on PC and not on the x360 means that Valve is not behind it. If Valve wanted to charge for the DLC they would have charged for the PC as well.

MS has a standard to set for xboxlive as it is a closed system unlike PSN.

butterfinger5385d ago

It's sort of weird how Sony still charges us the same for pretty much every map pack then, huh? Are you suggesting that Sony doesn't need to charge for these things, but they do anyway just because MS does? I can't think of a single item on the store that is a better deal on PSN than it is on XBL.

Finalfantasykid5385d ago

Its up to the developer. Games like UTIII have free just about everything, and Sony had no problem with this.

Here Valve wanted the DLC to be free, but MS would not hear it, and forced there to be a price. If L4D were on the PS3, that DLC would probably be free.

cmrbe5385d ago

Sony allows more freedom on PSN the example as FinalantsyKid pointed out. As you said pretty much but not all. Its is one of the disadvantage of a closed standardize systems. On the flip side, dev are held to standards such as universal cross-game chat etc etc.

raztad5385d ago

It's simple.

MS hates free stuff and force developers to charge for it, why to give something for free if the fanbase will gladly pay for it, even if it's free elsewhere?

5385d ago
butterfinger5385d ago

I went ahead and reported your comment as offensive. You clearly can't make a point in the Gamer Zone without having to call someone a name. As for the point you attempted to make, The Joker deal was an exclusive deal with Sony in an effort to sell more copies of the PS3 version. You used possibly the stupidest example, and then you couldn't come up with anything else. You should attempt to look outside of the console you worship once in a while.

Mu5afir5384d ago

The joker content might be exclusive, but that doesn't mean it's not FREE. Keep in mind, Microsoft will never allow anything that is FREE on the PS3 to be on the X360 at ALL. Take for example any Unreal T mods. Their principle is to charge for content, allowing free content would be out of the question. Therefore they would rather not allow any content at all.

ThanatosDMC5384d ago

What about the Steam version?

fusionboxer5384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

The joker content was just one example that he used. Sure it might've been an attempt to gain more sales, but instead of Sony paying for the DLC on top of charging gamers to purchase the game (like Microsoft did with GTA), Sony got it and gave it to gamers for free. The same thing happened with Mirrors Edge.

The psn's open network also allows devs to play around with the infrastructure of their network supplying better online experiences in some very specific cases. Look at Killzone, Little Big Planet, Warhawk, Resistance 2, and the upcoming MAG for some examples of some very different online infrastructures that all work wonders for each of their fanbases.

Take notice of a very cool trend forming on the PSN. Rather then nickel and diming users for DLC, games like Unreal Tournament, Little Big Planet, and the upcoming Modnation racers are setting up foundations that provide a limitless amount of DLC to gamers for absolutely no cost at all. Devs are also being given tools to create spaces for Playstation Home where the devs can easily use assets from their games to create home spaces that provide a fun place for home users to hang out and a great place to advertise for developers. I've even heard that Sony provides templates for devs that don't have the same budget to create a huge space. A perfect example of this is the Fat Princess home space, which used a past space, but with the devs in game assets they just threw some stuff in to customize it a bit.

In reality when you look at the differences between xbox live and the psn, you can see immediate differences in each of the companies respective goals. Whereas Microsofts main focus is clearly on keeping gamers together, Sony's goals are somewhat clouded in mystery because things like cross game chat have yet to be released. Many consider it a weak point, but in other cases you have dedicated servers (unlike live) that are capable of hosting upwards of 250 players in a single map (ex: MAG) with little to no lag in certain cases.

If you want proof that things can be a better deal on PSN then Live then simply go back to the moment you paid for Live and then had to pay for DLC. The PSN's main draw is that it remains free and yet you can get the same DLC and similar features for the same price as gamers who pay that subscription fee.

For example:
Say I want to have a beer. I can pay a 20 dollar cover charge to get into this club and buy a beer or I can go into this bar for free and get my beer.

The beers the same at both places, but in one you pay to get in and the other you don't. It's actually really simple. The only difference is that in the club you'll feel more "exclusive", but unfortunately you'll realize real quick it's only a feeling.

Shepherd 2145384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

ooooo ahhhh, its the big bad MS Corporation who defines pure evil and sucks dry the souls of men. Its a business, MS wants a bigger paycheck like everyone else in this world and they know they can do it because people will buy the L4D DLC.

If you owned your own small business, you would do anything and everything thats not illegal or immoral to get the local consumer to spend more at your store. MS charging for DLC is not illegal, nor is it immoral since its a year after L4D's launch, its MS's product, and they can do what they want with THEIR product. And if people want to buy it, whats wrong with it? MS isnt forcing anyone to buy DLC for a year old game. Get in touch with reality people. MS isnt duping anyone except for the sorry loser bags that are wasting their time on this site crying about it or criticizing it.

Winter47th5384d ago

Paying for LIVE isn't justified if they force their consumers to pay for supposed free content too. Thanx Microsoft.

Wow MS ripping off the bots as usual. And yet you guy still defend them.

Pandamobile5385d ago

Poor guys having to pay for free content on top of their $60 annual fee.

5385d ago
Pandamobile5385d ago

Hey man, don't knock L4D. L4D is awesome (on the PC).

And FYI the campaigns are supposed to be about an hour long. It's a multiplayer game. 3 hours campaigns would be stupid.

Saaking5385d ago

L4D offers a LOT more on PC with mods and free DLC. The bots get screwed as always and they keep coming back for more.

butterfinger5385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

is obviously a lot better on PC, but it you guys continue to look ignorant everytime you try to act like a year of XBOX Live costs $60. Also, Left 4 Dead is actually only $29.99 for the 360 AND the PC. It's pretty sad to see all of you so desperate to misinform.

@ICY - Yeah, $10, everyone of you dumbasses makes a big deal about paying $4.16 per month for Live, but now $10 extra isn't a big deal. I'm not surprised.

Yes, you are a dumbass. I'm not making a big deal out of it, I am stating the facts unlike %90 of the fanboys (like yourself) in here. If you don't think $10 is a big deal, then good for you, but apparently PS3 fanboys are so strapped for cash that they can't afford to pay $4.16 per month for a better online service. It doesn't really matter what you say, the facts have been presented and the morons have been corrected.

Interestingly enough, dumbass, I gave links and stated facts. I didn't have to give an opinion. My only opinion is that you are a dumbass, and you support that with every line you type.

Are you sure my opinion doesn't matter to you? You sure do feel the need to continue to respond and get defensive. It's pretty pathetic, really. :)

IcyJoker1875385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

ummm Ok 10 dollars difference.

Dumbasses? I'm not talking about the live price here being 60 bucks, I'm saying that 60 dollars annually and 50 dollars annually isn't the big deal your making it.

Edit**OK whatever you say, good thing your opinion hardly matters to me.

Yeah thats what I mean and once again your opinion hardly matters to me.

Yeah your right your hurting my feeling, please stop, meaningless people on the internet always get to me T_T

spongeboob5385d ago

The bots will be paying beyond while we will be playing beyond.

butterfinger5385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

you can't stop replying, Icy. Mission accomplished. You officially can't stop yourself from being irritated and having to respond. lmao XD

Lol. You clearly can't help yourself. My main objective is to just sink you down further and further, making you look as stupid as the imaginary internet people you look down upon. It's so much fun! All of your replies are so incredibly predictable!

No, no, no, Icy. You are making YOURSELF look stupid. I'm just helping you along. Do you honestly want to be the person that couldn't stop talking to me all night? If so, then let's continue! I'm sure you will regardless.

OK, so since you wish to talk to me all night long; how was your day today (maybe this will elicit a less predictable response, but I doubt it)?

IcyJoker1875385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

Responding means I'm irritated? Whoa.

You think your making me look stupid? Yikes.

IcyJoker1875385d ago

"No, no, no, Icy. You are making YOURSELF look stupid" Uh oh

JasonPC360PS3Wii5385d ago

Poor droids don't have Left 4 Dead, go join another PC petition maybe it will work this time.

trancefreak5385d ago

Im fairly sure left 4 dead is still $59.99 usd on the 360 where as the pc version Game of the Year is $29.99 for pc. I have the pc steam version without killing the wallet.

Most peeps i play on steam with dispise consoles and much prefer pc based games.

I like a variety so I own them all but i wont pay for subcription access to a multiplayer game when i can get the better pc version with free steam online mplayer.

I wonder if left 4 dead was on psn if those very same map packs would be free @ the request of the dev/Valve. I betting they would of been!

butterfinger5384d ago

I'm pretty sure I provided links to PROVE that Left 4 Dead (GOTY edition) is only $29.99 on 360 AND PC. How stupid/blind can you be? Do you just openly choose to not accept facts, because you don't like them? That's just sad.

trancefreak5384d ago

@Butter finger:

Thanks im glad the price came down too didnt see ur link earlier but thats a great deal now.

The next 360 game I buy will be the exclusive halo 3 odst. Just like with sony ill be getting uncharted 2 and keeping games such as l4d on the pc.

Thanks for the correction though

Why does MS hate free stuff so much? I don't get it, we already pay for XBL and they STILL put ads and STILL insist on charging for everything even if the developer doesn't want to. That's just sad.

Saaking5385d ago

standards? You mean ripping off customers?

cmrbe5385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

is a standardize closed system. They have set standards for everything including pricing for DLC.

Troll-Killer5385d ago

...this is how MS maintains an edge on their competitor(s). They charge for LIVE....but it gives them an edge on Sony...and Nintendo...because they offer a better online package because of it. They charge for (most) DLC, but they also get the best content for their customers because of that extra $$, like exclusive...or timed-exclusive...content, and better quality multiplatform treatment across the board. They also use that $$ to support a LIVE infrastructure that GUARANTEES certain things for their customers, that Sony can't/doesn't provide, such as free demos for ALL XBLA TITLES, and mandatory LIVE features across all releases on their platform.

trancefreak5385d ago

Troll killer pls psn rocks and i have 2 copies of l4d on my 2 different steam accounts which are free(steam accounts) and so is the dlc + the mods.

I refuse to pay for a subscription based game portal on my 360 when I can get so much more on my pc ps3 for free access. Only games on my 360 I play are non multiplayer. The rest are on steam or psn. I prefer psn way more than xbox live and the 50 dollar price tag isnt worth it to me or justified to be in the exclusive gold club annually. also

Compared to sonys psn Micro is way out of control with nickel and dimeing its cutomers. No thanks Ms until your game portal is free ill steer clear of xbl.

Its funny though how most pc expansions are free compared to its console counter parts and compile that on top of a 50 dollar gold card wow why would people pay all that money? just to game online.

If xbl was free It would be much more appeasing.

artsaber5384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

Microsoft can just keep piling on sand, glue, and broken glass to that strap on and loyal 360 fans will take it up their rear ends with the smile of a jester and with the pride of a wounded soldier @ war.

Everytime a 360 fan pays a premium price for Online gaming, exhorbantly priced accessories (hdd and wifi), etc. They butt f*k the rest of the gaming community while saluting like a cross-eyed Golmer Pyle.

Die-hard 360 fans are a DISEASE to gaming, because they never stand up for themselves, or any other gamer for that matter. They accept piss poor hardware quality, and defend it as if their very lives depended upon it. If Microsoft has a legion of loyal rape-takers, why would they EVER offer anything for free, hell they don't even want to give a DISCOUNT.

As long as Microsoft's shady practices are defended by the masses they will NEVER improve, seek to improve, etc. Ironically, the only REAL reason they EVER made a price drop was due to the rivalry that all Microsoft fans hate... the PS3. How does that make you guys feel? The fact that Microsoft dropped the 360's price TWICE for the PS3, and not ONCE for a single soul who logs on to XBL?

You may now slit your wrists.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies37d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken37d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing6937d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker37d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing6937d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt37d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken37d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

Most Offensive Video Games That Would Never Cut It Today

Times are changing, and these games would have never been made in today's climate.

wealthofgeeks.com
thorstein75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

Every single time someone uses this phrase whether it's music, movies, books, comics, video games, etc it's always the same claim.

The ubiquitous "they" won't allow it to be made. And every decade these claims are made the claimant completely ignores all the "offensive" material that is published when the claim is made.

In ten years, you can write a new article about how you can't make games like Helldivers 2, Resident Evil VIII, Mortal Kombat I, Dragon's Dogma 2, Alan Wake 2 etc etc etc any more.

MrBaskerville74d ago

Yeah, people wouldn't be constantly outraged if there weren't games that people found enraging. The whole SBI discourse shit wouldn't be a thing if all games were inoffensive. A game like Starfield can make a guy froth at his mouth, so there will always be room for a list like this.

0hMyGandhi74d ago

Normally, I'd be inclined to agree with you, but there are massive caveats.
TV shows like Venture Bros, Ren and Stimpy, and Aqua Team wouldn't/couldn't be made today. Hell, Ren and Stimpy was a *children's* show, same thing with Rocko's Modern Life.

It's not for some arbitrary reason, either. It's branding and IP alignment. Companies are far more risk-averse than they were when I was kid in the 90's. Of course, you have companies coming out of the woodwork to hell spur on similar content, but remember: Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon and some incredibly provocative material.

And for movies? it's pretty obvious. American Pie/Wedding Crashers/Eurotrip among many other "raunch coms" have fallen out of style, and are absolutely outside what the modern day film industry is willing to stand by.
Ace Ventura 1 and 2, Dumb and Dumber, Freddy Got Fingered, Rat Race, Harold and Kumar, and Van Wilder follow suit.

Remember: I am not explicitly talking about films put onto streamers. I am talking wide-releases in actual theaters. Same thing goes for games: Carmageddon, Duke Nukem, Manhunt, Six Days In Fallujah (with their original concept), Hatred, and so on and so forth. Of course, I'd be inclined to mention most tactical shooters like Rainbow Six and Joint Ops as well, due to cultural sensitivity regarding *who* you are shooting and why.

And not all of it is bad (obviously). Tastes change, and perspectives change to fit the demographic.
I should add that I'm a lefty, living in L.A. Working in film.

thorstein74d ago

The Boys, Invincible, Jojo Rabbit, Deadpool, Gen V, Last of Us, Banshee... There are plenty of media being made today that people will claim "can't be made today".

Profchaos74d ago

Yeah but if you consider manhunt which was basically a snuff film could you seriously make that game with high than PS2 era graphics.

thorstein73d ago

The Outlast Trials just came out.

But the storyline of Manhunt was that you were executed. But then lived. And if you didn't do as you were told, you'd die. And the people you killed were not innocents.

It was all filmed by a psychopath.

As we speak GTA VI is being finished up for a release. You get to play a Bonnie and Clyde type of protagonist who run up against the law.

Bodycam looks so real.

People are making those games. Articles like this will always exist no matter how incorrect they are, no matter how many times they blame "them" for whatever it is "they" do to prevent "those" games from being made.

Number1TailzFan74d ago

The UK is the biggest junk country pandering to that nonsense as well, with laws against free speech and expression to match. It got so bad even Rowan Atkinson made a video on free speech about it.

Now the UK raises the age rating on harmless films like Mary Poppins, it's just a load of pansy weak ass nonsense.

Left 4 Dead Writer Explains The Drawbacks Of Releasing Games In Early Access

He wants to launch all his projects initially through close beta.
