[Exclusive] Here's Your First Look At The Upcoming White, All-Digital Xbox Series X

Sources close to eXputer have revealed images of the white, digital-only Xbox Series X that's coming in June or July this year.

Well that's stupid... no optical drive would greatly reduce the overall thickness as well as height. It would be closer in design to the verizon cube [ https://www.verizon.com/abo... ]... but then again this is MS we are talking about.

Without questioning whether this is legit or not how would removing it change the dimensions without redesigning the internals? The fan dictates the width/depth and there is already other components (PSU etc) located next to the drive in the bottom half.

You're basially gaining a drive sized cutout at the bottom left half of the SKU, which 1 would look stupid and 2 require all new tooling/manufacturing on the external case.

In pretty much all instances where a redesign is taking place, they make appropriate cosmetic changes to the exterior to reflect the changes of the internals. No optical disc drive would make more room for more board changes. No doubt the existing board design was predicated on the optical drive fitting into the mix and then building around that.

If their idea is now to increase the thickness of the heatsink to make up for the loss of optical drive space... again that is just stupid. They should take the opportunity to redesign the entire board to something smaller. Even the cylindrical design would be better than this. This is like the move from the One S to the One SAD... just taking the easy way out instead of actual engineering to make it more appealing.

Based on how its designed, just taking out the disc drive wouldnt actually affect any of the dimensions (unless they turn it into some weird L shape thing).

The width and depth are determined by the fan and the height by the rest of the components which are even taller than the disc drive when put together.

That said, you would expect them to just actually redesign the layout of the console in a different manner to actually take advantage of the lack of a disc drive, to the point that I would be surprised if this very lazy design doesnt turn out to be fake.

For all of their past and ongoing issues, they have put care into the design of the hardware itself design wise, and every revision they have made in the past has had design chances as well, but who knows, I guess we will find out soon enough

They did this before though. The Xbox One All Digital, or Xbox One SAD, was exactly this; they just removed the disc drive and closed the tray.

I forgot about that one, though to be fair, that one is more the exception than the rule and the One S in itself was already quite small.

Making a new design would increase costs for new production line, research and development, distribution of parts so you would end up with a more expensive console.

This is for cost savings to boost sales, since majority of Xbox users are GP subscribers and don't use the disc drive.

Wouldn't a color swap with a similar case be better for everyone? It reduces development costs, makes production cheaper, and benefits both the consumer and Xbox. Honestly, a redesign costs money, why waste it...

Brand perception. Don't forget the had heavy discounts last year and December and that didn't even do anything for them. Should they permanently cut the price they put out the view that their console is worth less than their competitor's offerring. Even if they cut the price they know they will not get a notable sales bump because they tried that on more than one occassion. Now this discless console is going head to head with the PS5 digital. Good luck to them.
This should have been the console they released alongside the disc based Series X NOT the Series S which caused so much publicised developer frustration.

399 would make sense, but then again maybe the guaranteed digital capture isnt enough to warrant $100 off for a $20??part (in bulk). It is assume the x costs more than the ps5 to make based on die size and cu count.? Probably using terms at least partially incorrect.

What is this garbage? The thumbnail should be the purported image of the new console. The image itself is looks way too grainy for 2024. The console in the image is proportioned like a refrigerator and not something that will fit in an entertainment center.

I'm personally done with consoles.
I don't play on my Xbox. My son has the ps5, which ironically we have to buy him a new one because his constantly overheats and hardly works now for 2 weeks. I'm just going to stick to PC. Both manufacturers have made this an easy decision for me.

To reply your design comment... This is probably gonna be 399 console so they can put it on sale for 299 for Christmas or give different outlets different discount numbers.
Having PS5 PRo for 699... there is potential for boosted sales... giving the fact that both consoles are new on the market for moms and dads.

New Xbox, new color, new new next gen, whatever conversation is moot to me at this point. Last night I saw my son’s Xbox x move from about 30% slanted on his bed, to about 60%. No jarring, just a slit tip. Now Xbox wants $300 to have the hdmi port repaired. It was like the Ghost of Xbox Repair Money killed it for fun. Last Xbox console for me.
