WTMG's Leo Faria: "This is not the worst idea Nintendo has ever had, but it’s really poorly implemented. F-Zero 99 feels restrained, never fully grasping the concept of an actual battle royale, just punishing the smallest percentage of players per race. It’s just a revamped take on the SNES original, with just more drivers per race, with a lot less room for skill, and more room for nonsensical mayhem. It’s free and devoid of microtransactions, but it’s also really short on content, with just four ships and a handful of tracks. It is not what fans of the franchise were hoping for. It might not be as insulting as Star Fox Zero or Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash when it comes to reviving dormant IPs with unnecessary experimentation, but it’s still a huge disappointment for those still cherishing F-Zero GX as the zenith of racing gaming as we know it."
Nintendo has announced its Switch Online racer F-Zero 99 will be bumped up to Version 1.3.0 this week on 28th March.
F-Zero 99 version 1.2.1 update released for all players, and the patch notes have come in from Nintendo.
Glad to see Nintendo supporting this game. Hopefully the more people that play it will garner more fans of the series.
F-Zero 99 version 1.2.0 update patch notes available featuring private lobbies, Secret Tracks, and more.
“It’s not what the fans of the franchise were hoping for”
That is true but also us fans are actually really enjoying it for what it is.
My theory is that with MK8 finally wrapping up, and the Switch 2 rumored power, this is the most inexpensive field test to see how much interest in a F-Zero game exists.
They definitely could have ported GX from the Gamecube over with online and necessary touch ups to gauge the same, but that's obviously more of a risk financially and requires more effort than this.
It may not be much and it also may not be what the majority hoped, but because this is F-Zero, it's actually better than nothing.
