This has to be one of the most niche products I’ve seen in a while in the gaming space.

The name is decent.

The design is awful, although I get trying to emulate the DualSense controller as much as possible. But it just looks like an abomination.

Streaming over Wi-Fi only is kind of mid, and still not being able to stream PS+ Premium games is annoying.

The display is okay, 1080p 60Hz LCD is pretty common, but when people are getting 4K 120Hz TVs with VRR, and going to a display that doesn’t support higher refresh rates or VRR (at least not that we know), it’s going to be a downgrade for them, since they can only play at home to begin with with Portal.

We still don’t know what kind of hardware is in it, but considering the price it’s most likely a low class ARM processor, so even those looking to mod it, might find underwhelming hardware for the internals.

$199 isn’t bad, but I just don’t know who this device is for outside of a VERY niche use of two or more people sharing a single TV, and this gives the PS5 user a means to still game without taking the TV from others.

Just make a high-end gaming tablet with cellular. The iPad craze has slowed down drastically from a few years ago, so and people would be willing to buy a tablet alternative, especially if it can be sold or direct fulfilled by phone carriers. Something like a High refresh 1440p gaming tablet, that supports Remote Play, PS Cloud, PS+ Premium, and has Other OS for potential Android support is going to be a much better alternative in the long run for gamers on the go.

The earbuds seem cool, though especially for easier PSVR2 audio support.

================
This is for alot of people in this circumstance alone. I will not be purchasing one but I can see the use case be it while your kids watch their favorite movie, sitting out on the deck, or laying in bed.

ocelot07279d ago

If you have a phone then this thing is kind of pointless. When something like the Backbone exists.

If you already have a phone. Then buying a backbone for £60-£100 not only makes it cheaper than this. But a much better option. As with the backbone + a phone you can not only remote play your ps5 to it. You can download Nvidia Geforce now and stream pc games. Or Steam Link and even Xbox gamepass via xcloud.

Neonridr279d ago

@ocelot - AND you get a better screen if you have a newer phone.

derek279d ago

@ocelot, I will never ever use my phone for gaming, and I'm not alone. This thing will sell well.

EvertonFC279d ago

It's for gamers who like playing in bed, or nxt to the wife when she's watching something in TV etc.
How many millions want to do that remains to be seen but I'm guessing about 10/15m total sales which I imagine is what Sonya data is telling them.

ABizzel1279d ago

But why not just buy a $200 TV at that point. I can see this working somewhat in Japan with traditionally smaller living spaces, so maybe 1 TV is in a household, but in places like the US more than half of the country has three or more TVs in their homes, and for $200 again you can buy another TV at that point.

I wish them luck, but I just don’t see it doing well in most regions without it being just a niche purchase.

DigitallyAfflicted279d ago

It's a weird one, if it's only remote play which isn't really grate as it is anyway, laggy and low qwality (this could be only my problem in my house environment) then I really don't see a point off it…

Silly Mammo279d ago

Ocelot- exactly, I'll stick with my Kishi v2 and Galaxy 22+

metalhead279d ago

Every parent with a PS5 will get this when their kid takes over the tv.

I_am_Batman278d ago (Edited 278d ago )

@EvertonFC: I think you're overestimating the market for this by a lot. I'd be very surprised if it manages to sell anywhere near half of what you're suggesting. To be honest I don't know why this even got greenlit. I just don't see how you market such a limited use-case device while avoiding confusion about what this actually is.

I'm admittedly biased against handheld gaming and even more biased against game streaming so maybe I just can't see the appeal it might have for others, but who wants to spend $200 to have a vastly inferior gameplay experience? Especially when most people own general purpose devices like phones, tablets or laptops that can already do the same thing.

Guess we'll have to wait and see, but I think 2-3 million lifetime sales would be a success for such a limited device.

VariantAEC271d ago

@ABizzel1
"But why not just buy a $200 TV at that point."
🤣🤣🤣 Are you not able to stop and reflect on your thoughts before you reply?
Who wants two TVs right next to each other sharing the same space with the one your spouse uses being the high end one and the one you will presumably be using to game on being that $200 unit?

Just a braindead take. The other thing is that you'd need a DualShock 4 or DualSense controller and some streaming stick connected to that $200 TV that is compatible with PS Remote Play app just to do what you are suggesting... at what point is it just simpler and less intrusive to buy a PS Portal instead of all that mess (assuming you have none of the above).

Let's also skip the whole "Just buy a Backbone to use on your phone." arguments as these options don't provide the PS5 experience, no haptics, and no adaptive trigger functionality and the controller is $99.99 working only with a far more expensive cellphone. Tablets are also pricy devices and the ones with great streaming video battery life are still often more expensive than a PS5 itself. Sure we still don't know how long PS Portal will fair on a single charge, but you might need your cellphone for other more important things.

The PS Portal is a dedicated PS5 streaming device, there's no ambiguity there, that's all it's made to do. For $200 you get the battery screen and controller to stream from PS5, no funny business, no missing DualSense features. It's not for everyone, but it fills a niche with those who may just want to be somewhere besides in front of their TV screen to play games. Sometimes my cat is sleeping in the chair and I don't feel like disturbing her, sometimes I would rather be in another room and play or God forbid, maybe be getting some sunshine and playing videogames at the same time. PS5 can't go with me my phone only really holds up well if it's on a stand as many clips don't fit the phones I have picked up and might not allow for a tight enough grip to keep it in place anyway.

PS Portal is the next step for Remote Play. Games you own locally available anywhere where you have decent internet. Sure it's not going to be as good as playing on PS5, but I am hopeful it will be better than PS Remote Play on mobile and PC.

This brings me to the final point and the only thing we have no proof of one way or the other quite yet... What if PS Portal is the better option with lower latency and better image quality while also providing Adaptive Triggers and haptics?
Would that make it worth it?

The design seems to be 100% going for comfort over aesthetics. Which i have to say, Im ok with.

VenomUK279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

“games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming, are not supported.”

Why? that, seems like a natural fit. Surely if the PlayStation Portal could stream PS Plus games it would make it more appealing to people who have a subscription but not a PS console - but maybe that number is few.

If the quality of image and gameplay is high then this could appeal to people who want to play full PlayStation 5 games in their bed - including me. I have a Nintendo Switch, and granted I’m not a typical user, but not once have I used it away from home.

Stuart5756278d ago

i honestly don't mind the aesthetics either

VariantAEC271d ago

@VenomUK
Who has PS+ **PREMIUM** (the only tier with cloud streaming), but no PS console?

S2Killinit271d ago

I dont think this devise uses the subscription to stream the games. It streams anything you have bought from your console.

darthv72279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

If it links to the 5 and lets you play games installed, it should let you also play PS+ using the 5 as the buffer.

If not, then huge missed opportunity.

Eonjay279d ago

I think this has been already been answered. You can play anything that the PS5 does so the answer is yes by default unless I misunderstood what you are asking.

1Victor279d ago

I’m more Interested in the head buds I have the XM5 and love them and people I talk to over the phone think I’m in a empty room even when I got a ambulance or fire truck blaring their sirens next to me. This buds sound like they’re going to be a excellent choice for my iPhone

NotoriousWhiz279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

Really it should just be able to play plus cloud games without the ps5. Missed opportunity there.

Vits279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

The way I see it what Sony is trying to make is a "normie" version of products that already exist but are niche. Stuff like the Logitech G-Cloud or the Abxylute are already dedicated streaming machines that can do the same and much more. Phones/Tablets with controllers, and Android handhelds by companies like Retroid, Anbernic, Powkiddy, Odroid, Ayn etc. All can do the same and more. Even Windows handhelds and the Steam Deck can also do that.

But what those devices lack is the marketing power of a giant like Sony. So they are putting themselves in a position where the mainstream public will probably be more interested in this product, some might even find it amazing because "now I can finally play in the bed, or my kids can finally play while I watch a movie". Not knowing that it was already possible for at least a couple of years in many different devices, some that they might even own already.

So I do agree that is a niche product. But is a niche product targeting a mainstream, not so close to tech, public. With the added benefit of pushing their proprietary substitute for BT as well.

Majin-vegeta279d ago

Streaming perhaps added too much latency.

darthv72279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

Im curious if this will be like the PSP/PS3 where it was direct wifi (chip to chip) or will this work on any wifi network so long as the 5 is on the same network? I'd think they would have an option for direct, for those of us who use wired networks for the system which leaves the wifi unused.

Id think direct would be better as opposed to being on the same network with other devices. A new version of wiiu tablet controller for off tv play. Also curious about the range if it is direct connect. And hopefully it uses hall effect analog sticks. it would suck for this to get stick drift.

crazyCoconuts279d ago

Almost certainly not direct like the PS3 was

--Onilink--279d ago

From the IGN preview, it technically doesn’t have to be on the same network, it just has to be on wifi.

But I cant even begin to imagine the kind of latency you would get from separate wifi networks

seanpitt23279d ago

This must be made up of cheap components can't believe it's cheaper than the edge controller

darthv72279d ago

well, it wont have replaceable thumb sticks... so there is that

Majin-vegeta279d ago

Edge is $199 so is this...

notachance279d ago

ah well, they missed the opportunity to make it a retro-library console and a mini second-screen like wiiu controller

darthv72279d ago

Now that would be a really cool alternative use. Who knows... maybe they will enable something like that.

seanpitt23279d ago

@ majin not in Europe and UK we get shafted it's £209

VariantAEC271d ago

You can stream any PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 game that is stored locally on your PS5...

So it kind of already is a retro console.

lelo2play279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

Playstation fans will gobble this up.

merlox279d ago

I have a Logitech G Cloud I can do this on already. It works just fine with the PlayStation remote app.

Such a disappointment for PlayStation Portal. If this had a basic android OS. Where you could also install the likes of Geforce Now and Steam Link and Xbox Xcloud. I would of bought one without a second thought.

But from what it looks like. It can only be used for PS5 Remote play. It's just two expensive for what it is.

As for the headphones. I love Sony's previous headphones. The Pulse Elite, 2.0 and Wireless 3D. So I can see me buying the new elite ones.

The explorer ones look really nice. Could see me buying them when cheaper. Providing they are decent.

Eonjay279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

Not really a backbone is 100$. This by comparison is a much better deal and the screen is freaking huge. I want this for my bedroom.

For me the biggest issue with remote play handhelds is the smaller screen ( my eyes are happy with this gigantic display 😄) and the inferior controls.

This seems to address both. The only drawback is that PS+ Strraming hasn't been announced yet but it will come.

porkChop279d ago

"PS VR2 games, which require the headset, and games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming, are not supported."

PS+ streaming isn't coming. They are literally calling it a "remote play dedicated device". It only supports remote play of locally installed games.

blackblades279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

I would use it play and watch tv at same time as well as play smaller games on it like sea of stars or something. i might buy it one day but I'm still set to get a steam deck before this. Like I said before its optional and most likely they know itll be niche and we all know what it was. Its a nice accessory just like there other products nothing more and nothing less ok people. Dont make a big deal of it people

Eonjay279d ago

@Porkchop

Okay well that is disappointing.

Flakegriffin279d ago

My phone does 120hz and uses an OLED screen and I can play it on the go.

I’m better off getting a Backbone.

RupeeHoarder279d ago

to be fair, are you even streaming a clean 1080p on cellular? Also your phone screen is smaller, doesn't have DualSense features and will nag you with constant phone notifications. I wouldn't want to burn my phone battery on this purpose given all the other uses for my phone. The backbone is a cheaper alternative but has its drawbacks. I see somewhat of a market for this.

EvertonFC279d ago

Exactly, as I mentioned above I tried setting up paw patrol on remote play for my little nephew and after 10 mins it had used 15% battery and was super hot.
Who wants to ruin there battery and have no battery life until you get home.

Flakegriffin279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

I’ve had no issues streaming the games at 1080p on my phone. The screen is only smaller by roughly 1+ inch, which isn’t a make or break deal. Luckily I can charge my phone while playing it and it doesn’t blow up of 30+ notifications to really burn my battery because usually my notifications are off and the only people texting me is my wife or friends.

I’m speaking on what I’m going to stick with because, to me, this is a pointless purchase. Sure there’s a market but it’ll be extremely niche.

Every item has its drawbacks but I’m still better off getting a Backbone than paying $200+tax for something that may be used a couple of times.

The Vita did it better. Remote play, stand alone titles, and an OLED screen all for $350.

crazyCoconuts279d ago

I loved my vita, but remember it didn't have clickable thumbsticks or L1/R1. Mapping those to a touchpad on the back was almost unusable for remote play

Tapani279d ago

And how much was that phone again?

Flakegriffin279d ago

And what can I do on my phone INCLUDING streaming my PS5 games again?

EvertonFC279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

I tried setting up paw patrol on remote play on my new Xperia and after 10mins it had used 15% battery already.
Phones are not the answer if you want you're phone to have no battery in 1 or 2 hours.
Plus the phones get super hot really quickly.

Flakegriffin279d ago

Yeah, that’s fair on your end. I haven’t experienced a hot phone on my iPhone 14+ Ultra Max Super Duper when utilizing remote play.

tagzskie279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

here in japan backbone is 19000yen which is 150usd. So with just 50usd more it is no brainer to get a backbone. It is much better if they equal the dollar to yen i wish this device is 19999 not 25000yen.
edit
just check right now in amazon japan backbone is 19800.

crazyCoconuts279d ago

I think the difference between a 6" phone and this 8" display is bigger than the number suggests.

RupeeHoarder278d ago

It really is a massive difference. The Switch OLED 7" vs the Switch 6.2" was a huge difference. This thing is an inch larger than the OLED switch, ASUS ROG and SteamDeck, I don't think people realize how much real estate that is on a handheld gaming device.

VariantAEC271d ago

Most people also forget many phone displays are now not even 16:9 aspect, but some weird ratios like 18.5:9 or 19.3;9 that ensure Remote Play is now letterboxed on phone screens with considerably large bars to the left and right of the image in landscape orientation.

You are 100% right that an inch difference in display size will make a far larger difference in reality than on paper, but mostly because many people don't consider PS Remote Play doesn't respect aspect ratios other than 16:9.

Stuart5756278d ago

get a backbone then, but they're not very good, your phone wobbles in the bracket, the controller parts themselves are very small and hugely inferior to proper controllers. I bought one a few months back, took it straight back in for a refund, awful

VariantAEC271d ago

Having a 120hz display on your phone is USELESS for Remote Play because the PS5's output via Remote Play is 60FPS.

Next you will tell us your 1440p display is better... and I will inform you that PS5's max resolution via Remote Play is 1080p, again rendering your point totally irrelevant.
You probably also want an LCD display which will inevitably have a lower contrast ratio, which may help to mask any issues with video compression artifacts and will also not suffer from horrid image retention issues like an OLED display would.

The people at PS are smarter than you... clearly.

Flakegriffin271d ago

You sound upset because I have a different opinion.

Typical.

VariantAEC265d ago

You sound like an idiot.
I literally explained why it doesn't matter at all. How could you disagree with that... I explained you are an idiot that doesn't know the only way it could matter is if PS increases Remote Play to 120hz.

It looks so nice though...I will wishlist it for my Christmas gift.

Tapani279d ago

If this was 99 USD, might purchase it. Or if it was 300 USD and had 120hz OLED screen and this could be used with Steam as well as PS5, I'd buy it.

Lionsguard279d ago

Wait a few months when they realize all but 5 people bought one and it'll be found at your local mom and pop for $50.

Christopher279d ago

***Or if it was 300 USD and had 120hz OLED screen and this could be used with Steam as well as PS5, I'd buy it. ***

Cheapest Steam Deck price is $349, but, yeah, let's discuss a $300 item supporting both PS5 and Steam.

Tapani279d ago (Edited 279d ago )

I don't need a loud steamdeck with an inferior and smaller LCD panel and local hardware that can't play Baldur's Gate III at steady 40hz. I just want a large OLED for streaming with playstation grade controllers, and use 5G on the go and at home wifi 6. Something that looks good and can stream and display 1080p 120hz.

Local hardware could be doable if there's Strix Point at the very least in it, but the battery life of for example Rog Ally is 50 minutes when using it in full force, and Strix Point would be around the same level or way too expensive with a 75watt hour battery. My gaming sessions away from the big screen would be longer than that, and I don't want cables involved for constant charging. In Japan the internet is so fast everywhere that streaming on the go is viable.

10 Biggest Xbox Mistakes of All Time (So Far)

The Xbox brand has done a lot of good over the years, but their various blunders are pretty wild to look back on in their magnitude.

culturedvultures.com
piroh4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies3d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX3d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody3d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

Cacabunga3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_3d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga3d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie1d 22h ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly3d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga3d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit3d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_3d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff21833d ago (Edited 3d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies3d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.
