Final Fantasy 16 Could Be the RPG Franchise's Best New Entry in Over a Decade - Comicbook

LOGAN MOORE: "In short, Final Fantasy XVI is one of my most anticipated games for the remainder of the year. Between Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and now Final Fantasy XVI, Square Enix seems to have really found its stride with what is arguably the biggest franchise that it owns. The jury's still out on if Final Fantasy XVI can reach the same level of acclaim as these other outings, but if my own taste of what's to come is any indication, this could end up being a new high point for the series."

It'll sell off name alone. Whether it was action or turn based. It's the name final fantsy.

RpgSama375d ago

Sure thing, but if it's actually really really good it will sell even more, will have long legs, good year to be a Final Fantasy fan, both XVI and VII Part II (which I think will probably get moved to next year, we've barely seen anything about it)

blackblades375d ago

It havent been turn based in over decade, about all the jrpg that I can think of isnt turned based. There's only few games that are turn base and thats octopath type games those old school looking bit jprg and non big companies.

shinoff2183375d ago

That's exactly why I'm looking forward to sea of stars more then anything this year.

blackblades375d ago

Im so down for sea of stars, golden sun was one of the best lets see of seas of stars can top that

andy85375d ago

I'd say 2 decades to be honest. Ignoring online.

GhostScholar375d ago

I bet it’s because it’s only on PlayStation

SonyStyled375d ago

Absolutely. The hype has nothing to with it being a new iteration of a 3 decade old franchise. /s

This authors opinion is it could be the best FF in the past decade. I don’t think they hype has anything to do with the launch platform exclusive, or for console war ‘wins’

GhostScholar375d ago (Edited 375d ago )

There is no console war. Didn’t you hear Phil on kinda funny?

MadLad375d ago

15 sucked, 7 remake was just a reboot in 7's skin in order for sales and wants you to buy three games for it, and 14 needed an entire remake.

I hope they can actually do something proper once in a while, because it's only the Enix titles, and smaller properties, actually impressing when you sit down and actually play them.

SonyStyled375d ago

@Ghost, I did and it wasn’t ‘kinda funny’ either.

That has little to do with the writers opinion or hype for the game because “it’s only on PlayStation”

My point was fans aren’t excited because of console exclusivity

porkChop375d ago (Edited 375d ago )

That's isn't saying much considering what's come out. FF XII came out 17 years ago and even that one was iffy for me. Cool characters and world but dogshit combat system and one of the worst protagonists in the series. FFXIV is an MMO so I'm not really commenting on that, not my thing.

shinoff2183375d ago

I bought 12 day one. Got out of work played it all night. Played it for another week. Then it clicks. I don't really like this game. About a month 2 months ago I played it through, beat it. I was entertained enough but I walked away overall not really liking it. The gambit system was kinda whack to me most of the characters i couldnt really care for. I actually just beat ff6 after all these damn years and it was fantastic. So to this day ff6 through 9 are the best ones imo. Ff10 I good but they dropped so much from the game , it was extremely linear , no overworld map. I enjoyed the characters and story , along with the turn based combat.

porkChop375d ago

Agreed. FF 6-9 is perfection. I enjoyed 10 but yeah it was pretty different and that's where the series started to shift.

I don't know about ''great'' rpg.

Most epic fight sequences and presentation? Yes

Worst side quests ever? Yes
Boring traversal? Yes
Empty worlds? Yes
Demo is infinitely more mature than the actual game? Yes
FF16=MMO side quests + Devil May Cry Lite

Alos8837d ago

I'd give it the great part, it's the RPG part I find dubious.

EternalTitan37d ago

There is no Roleplaying/decision making in this game.
No crafting there isnt even character builds because just like Dante/Bayonetta Clive has all skills and loadouts available to him.

CrimsonWing6936d ago (Edited 36d ago )

What do you mean there’s no role playing? Also, I’m fairly certain I made builds with Eikon abilities and I’ve gone to the blacksmiths to literally select craft weapons and gear. 🤷‍♂️

EternalTitan34d ago

How many 'builds' can you make?
Weapons and gear only increase numbers. Tell me about elemental weaknesses and status.

CrimsonWing6934d ago (Edited 34d ago )

@EternalTitan

Elemental weakness isn’t an RPG defining end-all-be all element.

What statuses are you asking about? F*cking status buffs and debuffs? You talking about stats that increase with gear crafting? Because all that’s present in the game.

The fact that you even admit there’s builds and RPG elements contradicts your claim. No matter how limited they may be, they exist in the game, therefore it is an RPG. I think the correct critique is instead of claiming it’s “not an RPG” you really mean to say it’s an RPG not as in-depth as it’s contemporaries. Regardless, it’s an RPG nonetheless even without “elemental weakness” playing in combat.

EternalTitan33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

@CrimsonWing69
"Elemental weakness isn’t an RPG defining end-all-be all element"
Why not?
Where is your source for this?

CrimsonWing6933d ago

@EternalTitan

So you’re telling me if a game has all the elements and mechanics of an RPG except elemental weakness exploits in combat that they’re not an RPG?

C’mon man, how about you show me where it says an RPG must have elemental weakness mechanics?

Let’s be honest, this isn’t a “great” RPG. I am in the camp that it IS an RPG, no DMC game I’ve played is designed like this… but in terms of being a great RPG… well, I much prefer the RE-Trilogy over this.

That being said, I do think the DLCs have probably the best boss battles I’ve played in a game. Omega was crazy and the battle theme just amplified that for me. In the other hand, I’m struggling to think of a game that has a boss battle as great as Leviathan. Like, I played it on FF mode and it was sooooo intense and just a gorgeous and fun experience. The music was also top notch!

However, I really disliked most of everything of FF16. The Benedikta arc was fantastic, but after that the game was boring and a slog to get through. I think the boss battles were the best parts, but also inconsistent for me. Bahamut was peak for the base game, but everything else didn’t surpass that experience until you play the DLC bosses.

VersusDMC37d ago

The 2 DLC's were great. 2 new eikon ability sets (leviathan and...) and a survival/bloody palace mode with Rising Tide were great as well.

repsahj37d ago

The Base game is already great for me IMHO and the 2 DLC will even make it better.
