I tried PlayStation VR2 with Horizon at CES – it’s the ultimate PS5 upgrade - T3

From T3: "There's been a lot said about the PlayStation VR2 for the PlayStation 5, much of which revolves around its high asking price. But having been one of the first to sample the virtual reality kit at the world's largest technology show, CES 2023, I immediately went ahead and pre-ordered one.

I know, it almost sounds like a rash decision, especially as I'm hardly the world's most enthusiastic advocate of virtual reality in general (don't mention the metaverse, please). But I am particularly fond of Guerrilla Games' Horizon IP and Aloy's antics, so having had a taster of Call of the Mountain all I now want to do is have it as my own to explore deeper. "

The excitement among the press was already at fever pitch during the previews.

With the news of two more big hitters in Beat Saber and GT7 (free upgrade at launch!), along with all the established VR games getting upgrades (many for free, some still TBC), the hype is most definitely real.

Less than 7 weeks to go!

Im soooo looking forward to this. So many improvements have been made that I will finally get to really enjoy the experience. And hopefully there will be other previous games that get some VR2 upgrades. Particularly Vader immortal and Rush of blood.

crazyCoconuts509d ago

Firewall Zero Hour would be my favorite to play again, though I'd miss that gun controller... It was the best

derek509d ago

@darth, For real, all I need is an astro bot rescue mission 2.

ApocalypseShadow509d ago

Even I agree to this. Vader Immortal would be insane with higher quality detail and frame rate. Blood and Truth would be crazy with even more graphics.

HICK506d ago (Edited 506d ago )

@crazyCoconuts I'm wondering if we'll miss the Aim Controller once we have the precision of Sense controllers and manual reloads etc. We can always get a third part attachment or 3D print something.

Plus I'm a bit confused why you want to play Firewall Zero Hour when they are essential making it - Firewall Ultra. It's going to be way better I assume

I'm as excited as anyone but it's important to note not all established psvr1 games are being ported to psvr2 it's only games where the developers take the time to actually port it.

MrNinosan509d ago

Did anyone say all PSVR games were coming to PSVR2?

RaiderNation509d ago

I was really hoping for a Half Live Alyx announcement. That would've put it absolutely over the top for me!

jaymacx508d ago

I think they are saving that announcement for another time to spread out releases. That game would probably overshadow most of the games at launch.

VanHalen509d ago

So we can play our PSVR games on it? It’ll be free upgrades?

Profchaos509d ago (Edited 509d ago )

Nope if developers have built a psvr2 version you may be eligible for a free upgrade but there's zero guarantee that developers will bother making the psvr2 version and or make it a free upgrade. Some are because there may be an existing community they wish to cater for or have a prequel story accessible eg saints and sinners 1 is included as a bundle offer for 2.

Many devs may have made the psvr game in 2016 and long since shuttered or have been brought out I don't see Bethesda bringing us Skyrim, doom vfr or Wolfenstein cyber pilot psvr2 edition

S2Killinit508d ago

Not automatically. This thing has way too many differences w the previous headset. The games have to be updated by the developer. Good news is that there are signs that the really must have titles of PSVR are being adapted to PSVR2.

My personal fave is Moss. (They are also making Moss:Book 2 for PSVR2 which should be great)

frostypants508d ago (Edited 508d ago )

Hopefully GT7's VR will be full support across the game, not the limited experience they did for GT Sport. If so it will be amazing.

SullysCigar508d ago

I've heard many say it is, but they're basing it on the car, the track, etc and saying it's the campaign. Others are saying it's the full game, but not providing official sources. I SO want to believe! I see no reason why not, at this stage.

Wow... The previews are very positive. I want it so badly but the price is too high 😔.

DarXyde509d ago

It's definitely a lot to ask up front, and the impact of inflation on the cost of living doesn't make it any easier.

On the upside, as the cost comes down and it comes into your price range, it'll have more titles available (and perhaps cheaper, too).

Silver lining there, mate

phoenixwing509d ago (Edited 509d ago )

Unfortunately I don't have enough room to use it. Otherwise I'd have bought it.

S2Killinit509d ago

You can play from your seat. The majority of games are/can be played from a seating position.

Mr_Writer85509d ago (Edited 509d ago )

I remember being super excited for PSVR1.

I also went and pre ordered one after trying it at a Sony event.

I sold it last year in prep for PSVR2.

But I won't be buying a PSVR2, it's too expensive and no BC.

Had it been £250 or less sure I might have been able to look past the lack of BC.

I might still cave...But I probably give it a year or two.

Eonjay508d ago (Edited 508d ago )

Waiting isn't a bad idea. The price will probably be 299 by then. The library will be much much larger.

Mr_Writer85508d ago

Yeah, hopefully many of the game (if not all) get a free update, I would take that instead.

I understand the lack of BC is due to the controls and the tech etc, but it still stings.

Also Sony didn't really push much support for it later on. These things live and die from their support.

S2Killinit508d ago

But PSVR was only 50 bucks cheaper when you bought it, and it wasnt inflation then.

Mr_Writer85508d ago

I also wasn't into 3D printing in a major way and that's where a large chunk of my hobby money goes.

I just don't see value in the price ATM, and that's the main thing, paying £500 for something you're going to use lots and lots is better than £500 for something you won't use as much.

ApocalypseShadow509d ago

Again and again, PS VR 2 is wowing the people. Not surprising

SullysCigar509d ago

Looking forward to the first day-and-date release of a first party AAA hybrid game, for flat screen and VR.

We all know it's coming and it's a HUGE step to getting the attention of those sleeping on how awesome VR gaming is now.

FOMO will sell headsets, because they'll have a go to see what all the fuss is about - and bam, they'll buy one. I even saw this personally with PSVR1!

ApocalypseShadow509d ago (Edited 509d ago )

GT 7 is probably going to be that game day one. Fully in VR. I'm not sure because I'm guessing. But GT 7 being on PS4 and Pro gives Sony the room to use that version and push high resolution and detail with eye tracking and foveated rendering without using the PS5 assets. It'll look so close that it won't matter as it would be the entire game. Unless Sony is running the PS5 game at lower resolution like 1080p or more like 1440p. But Sony's lenses will make it look crisp.

Can't wait until GTA 5 and online is announced and it's not the PS5 version. But high resolution PS4 or Pro versions. Where you can't exactly tell again.

But there will be PS5 cross format games like you said. I'm sure many more hybrids are coming. Naysayers will keep getting embarrassed with the games that will be announced.
