Gabe Newell talks Steam Deck, crypto risks and why the PC industry “won’t tolerate” closed platforms

RPS writes:

We interview Valve’s co-founder on hardware plans and consolidation in gaming.

I recently had the chance to grill Gabe Newell – Valve president and co-founder, plus brain tech enthusiast – about the Steam Deck. What followed did indeed start with a look at Valve’s portable PC, including the lessons learned from the company’s past hardware attempts, but it soon swerved into a wider-ranging discussion on cryptocurrency, NFTs, consolidation issues affecting the games industry and whether there might be whole new Steam Decks in the future.

Silly statement. If a platform is closed it is no longer a PC. The Xbox is PC hardware and runs a slightly modified version of windows but is a closed platform.

blacktiger835d ago

But it's Linux, and open source is good for everyone

It's almost 100% windows for ease of development.

Gabe is slowly evolving into his ultimate form…Santachu.

Hey at least steam has been solid and offering innovation and new flavors and not falling in line with the mainstream milking tendencies like NTFs and bs crypto game integration. I love a company that can logically and eloquently say, nah, F that!

Keep steaming on!

Magog835d ago

Steam trading cards are an NFC basically.

MadLad835d ago

If you don't understand any of it, sure. Not defending NFTs; I see it to be nothing more than a cash grab from those who dreamt up the idea, but an NFT is far different than the Steam card system.
Neither of which I have no part in.

FinalFantasyFanatic834d ago

Not sure that Steam trading cards are comparable to NFTs, they're literally digital trading cards, plus hardly anyone is spending large amounts of money on those unless they're trying to level up their profile.

Notellin834d ago

@FinalFantasyFanatic

That's exactly what NFTs are though, is digital trading cards. And CSGO has a skin trading system where they trade for hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars.

It amazes me how little the gaming population understands them but despises them.

The title could be altered to "God talks Steam Deck and PC industry" and I wouldn't have batted an eye.

Fist4achin835d ago

Yawn. Three main topics listed in the title. HL3 confirmed...

God of War Creator: "The folks at PlayStation are gonna have to have a serious conversation"

God of War creator David Jaffe is fascinated with the Xbox Games Showcase and has special advice for PlayStation as well.

Jaffe is spot on, PS has been a shambles recently, why they wasted the time and money on that God awful looking Concord amd $Fairgame is beyond me but thats this new Sony, remasters remakes and GAAS is their goal moving forward, meanwhile MS just delivered a stunner of a showcase with massive variety and SP greatness, something I EXPECT from Sony..

RpgSama51m ago(Edited 50m ago)

I mean, we do have to factor than MS spent 60+ BILLION dollars to be able to have a showcase like that.

We also need to factor that regardless of how great the show was, a large % of those games including COD and DOOM are coming out on PS5 day and date.

Still kind of incredible to think they are giving all those games day one on GP, if they do not increase yearly it is an incredible value.

Crows9027m ago

I guess you could say he is spot on if you cant critically think for yourself.

First of all there is an audience for live service and multiplayer...everyone kept saying how Sony doesnt cater to that audience unlike MS with games like Halo and now they release multiplayer titles and everyone is bitching.

Secondly Concord looks like a typical hero shooter fps title and in that regard it doesnt look like crap and Fairgame has not been shown but if it is anything like payday I would say there is an audience for that as well. If Sony can launch another 2 succesful live service games like helldivers 2 then I can understand that push. It would also compete in a very competitive landscape but Helldivers2 managed it. We shall see with the other two.

And lastly ...yeah thats it...those are their only live service games and multiplayer focused titles they got in the works...everything else is single player oriented so nothing has changed...not to mention none of their major 1st party are really focusing on live service...once again NOTHING has changed.

As a bonus...pretty much everything people are really excited about from the showcase is releasing on playstation as well. And the games that may not release at launch will likely release later on. Perfect Dark, Fable and Avowed are the only really interesting titles they have and 2 of them have unknown release dates and have not been shown in a way where we can confidently say how they will play.

Until Sony has an actual showcase Id say it is best to mind yourself with loose speech.

“ Until Sony has an actual showcase Id say it is best to mind yourself with loose speech.”

See you back here in 2030 lol

SoapSuds13m ago

I’m miserable too after watching that Sony showcase.

Friendlygamer57m ago

This guy is irrelevant and has been for years

S2Killinit26m ago

Yep, he has been mad that he is no longer a major player in gaming industry.

Elda23m ago(Edited 21m ago)

Every generation PS always has the best AAA 1st,2nd & 3rd party exclusive games, in that regard I know PS has something great cooking in the kitchen for the near future but after the 2024 XB great E3 style showcase it's really time for PS to stop being so secretive & show PS owners what they are looking forward to when it comes to first-party exclusives. I've seen many disappointing XB showcases but this year for the first time in a long time XB brought it to the table. After 2018 E3 Sony just doesn't reveal their first party offerings like they used to & hopefully Sony/PS starts to listen to the feedback & bring PS owners a great showcase.

Konami didn't recover after ditching Kojima, but this Metal Gear revival is its best shot

With Kojima gone, a lot is riding on Konami's revival of Metal Gear.

Not really, Konami is basically in name only and like so many other Japanese studios that have come and gone they are just going to be an IP troll and milk that cow until it is dry. Also one of the advertised features is playing the game from a different camera view while everything else remains the same will just result in making the game easier like what happened with Twin Snakes.

Cacabunga2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

If this turns out good and gamers support it we will get the other ones.. i really hope we get MGS original in zanzibar, Peace Walker and Portable Ops remakes after this one.. they are related with naked snake

Portable Ops was sooooooo good and underrated

isarai6h ago

When are people going to learn that all Konami is doing with these games Is licensing them out? They are not trying to revive their game development Branch and they are not the ones developing this. It is studios that came to them and asked to use the license to make a game and they have been doing this pretty much since MGSV

jeromeface3h ago

Remaking all his work reaks of desperation. The only reason they are getting away with it is everyones deep love for the series. If delta is successful (which as of right now it should be), they'll be sure to remake all of them.

Redgrave1h ago

Big shoes to fill, and compared to SH2 - this is as much a 1:1 remake as you can get. You can still see the PS2 bones in the movements and how the cutscenes have the same angles. If anything, I'd have preferred the reverse.... with SH2 being closer to a 1:1 remake but prettier, and have MGS3 have a little more freedom.

Ideally, MGS3 with a MGSV skin in terms of gameplay and freedom of approach. This is more like a high budget remaster than a remake. Having recently replayed the Bluepoint remaster, this is going to be like that same experience but even prettier.

But, as with both MGS3 and SH2, nearly impossible shoes to fill if not outright so. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Such is the legacy of these GOAT titles.

Inverno38m ago

It's a one to one remake, using the same voice recordings too. Not a reimagining, no new content thus far announced, just a straight remake of a game that already exists, but now with prettier graphics. There's no revival, they proved they can't make anything related to MG after Survival. They'll just remake all the games and people will eat it up.
