CNET's Prizefight 360 vs PS3 - Part 1

It's time for one of CNET's Prizefights, where they pit competing electronic products against eachother in hopes of declaring one the superior. Their most recent Prizefight has the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 dueling it out for console supremacy.

So the article is about a Xbox360 fanboy bashing C-Net (wich happens to be Microsoft owned) for favoring certain elements of the PS3). I was going to laugh till I read the source of this article. "Xbox fanboy" lol.. couldnt of been from anywhere else.

Do we really need another 360 v PS3 article. How about these idiots actually wait for the market to settle in to the PS3, so its on more of a level standing in Library, development and establishment of services. Then we can compare how the two are fairing with a lot more information and relevant data. I live in the UK so can't comment on the PS3 as I havn't seen it running yet or experienced it for myself. But I would rather let it establish itself rather than passing early judgement. As should so called journalists.

The design... Well that's completely subjective in everybody's view. For instance, I hate black. I hated the look of the black XBOX, it's so 80's. Black, argh. And the PS3 has the problem when you put one finger on it, you'll instantly see the fingerprints. I like the white and slick design of the 360, much much better. And changing the faceplates, or the entire case is so cool.

Features another story. I personally don't need a next gen drive. I think streaming/downloading content is the future and there will be no real next gen standard/winner around. I already can watch HD movies through marketplace in USA, already I can stream movies from my PC to the 360 and even getting an external USB 2.0 HDD on the 360 gives me the opportunity to play movies. I don't need wireless, because wired connections are more stable. I don't need all kind of memory CF, SD card readers on my gameconsole, because pictures I upload on my PC and I might stream them to my 360.

It saved me 200 euro when buying the console, which I can spend on things that I find important.

The thing is a lot of people can't do all that malarky - streaming hd movies n all that. Perhaps its easy in the states, it certainly isn't over here. Our nets not that fast, hd hasnt really begun - and so the ps3 really makes everything a lot easier just to take it home and set it up without having to buy any add-ons at all.

The conclusion was 5 to ps3 4 to xbox360 - it simply has more features, so why get worked up over it? Some people dont need them, but they are still there.

Even though the movies on the marketplace may be HD (either 720P or 1080I) in resolution. They are highly compressed, and therefore not truly what they could be. You are not seeing those movies in their true splender, and the same can be said about all HDTV signals over cable or satellite. Im not so sure though about on HD-DVDs & BluRay discs, Im assuming that there, they aint so compressed. And i dont know about you, but much too compression makes it look bad, and since i know what to look for, i can clearly see it (the tall-tail signs of compression) when too much compression is used. So i wouldnt be so quick to chalk up the HD movies on the video marketplace as true Hi-Def.

You guys are video game players, okay you also watch movies. But anyone that say they truely give a rats ass about the difference between a 1080p and a 720p movie, because "I can see the slight tale tale differences in the compression" is FOS.

I agree with what the lady said and I felt that based on the two categories she provides. The PS3 was better than the 360. I also feel that you can easily create criteria to make whichever machine you want to win this so called prize fight. For example, category 1: library, category 2: online service, category 3: Interface, etc. She mentioned the brick power supply, are you kidding me, I don't actually have mine laying right next to my 360 for everyone to see. Beside, that brick would be a hell-of-a-lot easier to swap out shout the power supply go out.

Anyway, for what she used as categories she was absolutely correct, as a matter of fact, the features category should have been 5 to 3 for the PS3.

Im not talking about the difference between say to closely match codecs, Im talking about having to much compression, if you are going to compress something so heavily, then the codec had better damn well be good, because when we are talking about a difference from 10-20gigs to just like 4-5gigs. There is going to be a difference. Especially when they are both using the same codecs. What you think HD-DVD and even Bluray is mainly using? Its VC-1 which is H.264 based, same as what they are using on the video marketplace? So yes they is a visible difference and you can clearly see it when you know what to look for

Blackmoses - the same can be said for anything, it's the option to change the faceplate that makes it a cool feature. Kinda like you have the option the change pants everyday, imagine if you have to wear those ragedy faded jeans everyday. It's not suppose to help game play, if suppose to allow for free expression, customization, etc. Football season starts, throw on the fav team plate, want to look smooth throw on the chrome, etc.....note the sarcasm.

I didn't even read the article since the CNET reviews 99% of the time are USLESS ... if you bass any decisions from what Cnet tells you, you are in trouble. (this is for ANY PRODUCT)

On MANY occasions the reviews they give (video or written) don't even give correct facts on products.

As I said, I did not even read this so I have no idea if Cnet is Pro PS3 or Pro 360, or straight down the middle .... and either way, it does not impact my point about the reviews they give. All I now is take ANYTHING Cnet says about ANYTHING with a grain of sault.

Now apply that to Gamespot.com. Cause there reviews are suspect and they are a part of C-net. I cant see how they would be Microsoft biased though being they are owned by Microsoft. Maybe they are trying to save face after all those A$$backwards Sony game reviews on Gamespot. I have since switched to IGN and find them alot more unbiased and trust worthy.

Streaming video's is easy and it doesnt take that much time to figure out.. you dont need 20meg connection to do this.funny... Changing faceplates albeit pricey is pretty cool actually.. it gives it flavor really... you might not like it but aparentlly a lot of other people like it and I think it was a good idea to do.. The 360 was about customization remember??? Msoft wanted you to find out what you want. Seriously I hear what your saying but I just don't get it. It's cool for those that want that option but I stopped covering my school books with paper bags and drawing cool little ninja guys and perverted stick men on it's cover a long time ago. That's basically what I think of the whole face plate issue. PS2, gamecube and Xbox did this too. I just expected a little more the second time around from the XBOX360. Instead they insult your intelligence with a cool removeable face plate....what are we 12?!!!

On the other hand, I think some of the vinyl covers are sweet like throwing custom vinyl on a high performance sports car. Also you can mod your 360 with a whole new case and throw LED lights on it if you choose. Some people like to mod sh1t up and make it original. Some people enjoy it as a hobby.

I take face plates to the mall to get air brush put on them. I have like 4. One with a Gold desert eagle with smoking 50 cal. slugs, another with my gamer tag in red and black, custom halo with master chief and flames, and one with an OSU logo. It is kinds fun. And it cost me like $10.00 each.

I was going through my collection of 360 games and I noticed quite a few are native 1080p and with more announced coming this month.

Before you start making a arse of yourself....go to your local gaming store and look on the back of the game cases. It clearly says whether its native 1080p or not. Most just say 1080i or 720p...those I have mentioned actually say 1080p. And on my 1080p tv they look spectacular. And if you doubt I will gladly show the pics of the back of the cases and post them on here for everyone to see. The war is over. Comparing the two consoles makes no sense. The 360 outperforms the ps3. The ps3 launched with how many games in 1080p? 1 game folks...And keep in mind that was the resolution SONY touted as TRUE HD. Only a month or two after MS updated the 360...games were being released here and there in 1080p. Amazing....With no dipping frame rates...flawless and smooth..

You state all those games are in 1080p, and are flawless and smooth (Most are on the PS3 anyway), but you fail to take notice of the fact that the 360 cannot output in 1080p at the moment (Not in Native, anyway).
Why ? Component handles only 1080i and everything below.
So I find it interesting you describe the games as flawless and smooth under 1080p if you could not have possibly seen them in 1080p on the 360 (Unless you have one of these 'Black Box' 360s which are not even released yet (Which obviously Mart will absolutely dispise since he allegedly HATES the colour Black)).

Oh boy are you so wrong buddy. Somehow some way the rumor has spread that componant cables cannot do the 1080p output. I have the 61 inch Samsung DLP 1080p tv. I thought like you that TV's wouldn't except the 1080p signal through the componant calbes. I bought the VGA adapter because that is one way that you can definately get the True 1080p output from the xbox 360. I did just that buddy. And sure enought when I hit the display button on my samsung remote it clearly showed that MY tv was recieving a 1080p signal. When I have my ps3 hooked up via hdmi....it says the same thing....unless I'm playing Motorstorm and other games that output in 720p. When I hit display it changes depending on the output of the game. Another example is my Comcast DVR box is hooked to my TV...via hdmi as well. But yet when I watch HD channels it clearly says 1080i when I hit the display button...and if I'm watching a regular channel...it clearly says 480i. Now here is where it gets really interesting buddy. I then hooked my xbox 360 to my tv via componant cable. I watched some hd dvd's and clicked the display button and guess what.....It clearly stated 1080p. I was shocked. I thought like many others on the internet that componant cables couldn't do the 1080p signal. Let me be the one to tell you...IT 100% can. And it actually looks a tad better than the VGA adapter. The shocking part about it all is when I play Nba 2k7 and every other game that isn't native 1080p....the 360 upscales them to 1080p and it looks absolutely amazing. I click display on my tv and once again it shows the tv recieving a 1080p signal. If it wasn't transfering 1080p via componant...my tv would show that. I called up MS support and they confirmed what I had already thought. Componant cables can do the 1080p resolution. Where the problem can lie is when movies start making it to where they can only be displayed via hdmi...but that wont' be until 2012 or so. In the meanwhile...you can absolutely get the full 1080p signal via componant and vga...but I personally recommend componant. Keep in mind...you tv has to be one of the NEW tvs like mine that can actually recieve the 1080p signal. TV's made in 2005 and early 2006 couldn't accept a 1080p signal. They would only recieve 1080i then upscale internally to 1080p. The newer tvs like mine actually accept a true 1080p signal. The wierd thing is much of the industry is mis informed and I don't understand why. I called samsung and they told me the same thing MS told me. The 1080p signal can come through componant cables, vga, dvi, and hdmi. But he was quick to say that only my newer samsung could do it. The previous models could not.

P.S. Its strange that all of the 360 games I have played that isn't native 1080p...when they get upscaled internally...it looks absolutely mind blowing. I was shocked at the difference from 1080i to 1080p....And the native games that I have played is just beyond anything I could have imagined. I was suprised to see that even though I set my ps3 to 1080p in the display options....it didn't upscale the many 720p games that is out for the ps3. My TV didn't even upscale it. Thats how I knew for a fact that the 360 is actually outputting the 1080p signal. Anyone and Everyone....I highly recommend the Samsung 1080p DLP TV. Its unbelievable for my blu ray movies, HD dvd movies, my ps3 games, and my 360 games. And YES....The 360 outputs 1080p via componant and vga...I prefer componant...now that I have compared them thoroughly.

For anyone who doubts...I can take a picture of my tv screen playing an xbox 360 game...when I hit the display button and it cleary says 1080x1920p . I have taken pictures before to shut of fanboys. I can do it again if needed. The info I'm giving yall is the absolute truth. It shocked me as well. But its true. I wonder who spread the lies that componant cables can't do 1080p. Even the Best Buy guy I bought the tv from said it couldn't. But both MS and Samsung said that it does. Interesting indeed.

Motorstorm...I have played the demo to death. It clearly looks better than every ps3 game out right now. I hate the fact that there is no rumble. It feels like you are floating around the rigid terrain. But, I'm hoping for more tracks and fun online play. I realize it won't be an AAA title. But it will still be fun none the less. I'm curious about Lair....But, I buy every game. So if there is a sleeper hit for the ps3....I will be the first to tell everyone about it. But I'm not holding my breath. But as a Blu ray player...its fantastic. My advice to anyone is....if you want the best 1080p next gen console....get the xbox 360. It plays native games in 1080p and it upscales all games to 1080p. And the upscaled games absolutely look amazing compared to 720p or 1080i. The ps3 can't do that. If the game is made for 720p...it will play in 720p on a 1080p tv. Wierd...but 100% true. But there is a ton of games I'm looking foward to on my 360. I do want MS to hurry up with that hdmi connector and or the new 360. Only because I am a tech geek. Even if I can't see the difference...I want the best available.
