Arkane also helped MachineGames with Wolfenstein Youngblood.

PhillyDillyDee970d ago (Edited 970d ago )

That game was… well it wasnt good.

Yui_Suzumiya969d ago

God of War bored me so much that I went ahead and traded it for Youngblood. Loved it so much I got the platinum. Even had a blast with the Switch version recently.

RpgSama969d ago

@Yui

Yep, makes total sense, God of War bad, Young blood good /S

thesoftware730969d ago

Youngblood was really fun, backstep in story and characters..gameplay was top notch shit tho.

@Yui_Suzumiya
MG & Arkane tried something different with Youngblood, I'll agree.
But it didn't quite succeed. It was made by the smaller team of MG.
The larger one is involved in a bigger project after New Colossus.
Other than that, Return to Castle Wolfenstein (my fav. in the series), New Order, Old Blood and New Colossus are one of the best FPSs made.
Being a Wolfenstein fan, I was kinda disappointed with Wolfenstein (2008) and Youngblood.

Yui_Suzumiya969d ago

Well yeah, it wasn't as good as the other Wolfenstein games but it was still fun for what it was. I also wasn't saying God of War wasn't bad in the slightest, I just got bored with it like I do most God of War games. I'm very picky and few high profile games interest me which is why I'm primarily into visual novels and FPS's on my Switch right now.

darkrider970d ago

Let's wait and see. Maybe they can improve. They got time.

Sayai jin969d ago

If a game dev needs help, that keans they need to improve something witht the game?

Lightning77969d ago

Improving something? That's the general point of game development. If something needs Polish or improvement we won't know because we don't make the game. We just hope it's not in the final product. I don't know why collaboration or outsourcing is suddenly being questioned when this sorta thing is absolutely nothing new in the AAA industry. The only 1st publisher that doesn't outsource is Nintendo. I guess Nintendo is the only one doing development right?

Sayai jin969d ago

My question was rhetorical. As some people on this site msde a big del when when Coalition announced they eere adding on Square Enix for help with Perfect Dark, but the those same people ignore the fsct that this is notmal in the industry. Such as TLOU 2 had 14 studios and o er 2000 devs, which most were3rd party. Naughty Doghas around 550 employees so they added quite a lot of extra devs for help.

It's pretty nornal for hiring extra help on game development, especially large scale games.

thesoftware730969d ago

Dark,

Improve on what?

The game has never showed gameplay.

Teflon02969d ago

Wasn't aware they had something shown already lol. They could just be helping because they got the resources to do so, may not be actual issues

anast969d ago (Edited 969d ago )

"It's pretty clear that Xbox's investments are paying off, especially with games like Redfall." - game journo speaking game journolese

How is this "paying off"? Doesn't the game have to be sold and successful to "pay off"? Plus, Deathloop wasn't an anti-Sony game or a blockbuster hit. Starfield hasn't released yet and they are looking at the next gen. for ES6.

jznrpg969d ago (Edited 969d ago )

Yeah paid off is when they make more than the 7+ Billion spent back . They have a loooooong ways to go with that

Darkborn969d ago

Especially when gamepass isn't profitable yet.

alb1899969d ago

Considering the titles that we are starting to see is very promising.
Deathloop and Psychonauts 2 have been very high rated and very different games. I think is going well and I'm paying Gamepass very, very happy.

thesoftware730969d ago (Edited 969d ago )

No no,

Paying of is an expression, it does not have to = money.

It could be paying off in: ideas, game engines being shared, collaboration between teams, better and faster production of games, better overall resources management, leadership..ect.

@dark , GP has nothing to do with this bro..I think you should actually give GP a try..you might like it. Have you ever tried PSnow? I have and still have it subbed..together they offer so much games at your fingertips..its great.

Teflon02969d ago

You missed the points. Still can't say it's paying off with examples that don't make sense psychonauts is great but as far as I understand wasn't a good seller. Deathloop was great too, not on Xbox yet but will be, but didn't even sell great on PS. They haven't shown that the games they're releasing will get them in a better position.

GP doesn't directly have anything to do with it. But it's an equation that can't be ignored. It isn't really a big profit which ultimately wastes alot of sales potential that could have made alot more

Sayai jin968d ago

It is called Return on Investment (ROI).

justadelusion969d ago

id software is just in name, it hasnt held the core team of trailblazers for decades at this point

DOMination-969d ago

True. But. You could say this about almost every studio in the world. Sure you get the odd person who stays just like any job but the reality is most dev teams have a very different make up to what they would have looked like 10, 20 years ago..

Psychonaut85969d ago

Doesn’t mean much, they worked on Rage 2 and we see how that went.

RaidenBlack969d ago

Rage 2 was primarily made by Avalanche Studios using their proprietary Apex game engine instead of id Tech.
Id just worked with them at creative level. Directing Avalanche the style and the combat.

thesoftware730969d ago (Edited 969d ago )

Rage 2 was super fun!!! I played it with all the DLC...good game man.

I saved so many kill clip videos from that game, they way you could approach a enemy base and destroy them was amazingly fun..had a decent story and huge open world with good graphics.

What was wrong with it?

Yui_Suzumiya969d ago

I loved Rage 2 though.. also the original.. fantastic games!

Would It Have Even Mattered If Redfall Were Good?

Even if Redfall were a good game, the closure of Hi-Fi Rush proves even that doesn't matter in the industry.

Profchaos16d ago

Yeah it would have mattered especially since their huge game that year wasn't all that it was cracked up to be remember redfail was almost heavily promoted and hyped not to the level of starfield but still more promoted than the average game.

There was still a decent marketing campaign behind the game I'm sure millions were spent advertising it on websites and I saw a few billboards and bus stop signs in real life

darthv7215d ago

their biggest mistake was showcasing it as being a 60fps game only to release it at 30. That really soured the taste so that when the real 60fps mode was released, many still didnt want to give it a taste. i tierd it at 30... it was okay, but playing it at 60 is a much better experience and a better overall game. Its really not that bad once you get past the drama surrounding its initial release and just play it for what it is. It has some pretty decent aspects but nothing groundbreaking. It feels like a typical fps from the ps360 days... of which there were many.

jwillj2k416d ago

No it wouldn’t matter it wouldn’t bring in enough profit to offset their 100 billion dollar acquisition. It would maybe delay the inevitable by some months.

Profchaos15d ago

Pretty much no game in Bethesda stables makes cod numbers instantly even fallout 4 Bethesda's best selling game sold 12 million at launch and over the next 10 years climbed to over 32 which cod would do rapidly

CrimsonWing6916d ago

I would f*cking think so. Good games are what draws people to your platform. It’s why I adored the 360 era with Gears of War being one of the highlights for me. You make sh*t games and it just makes your platform that much worse and you start gobbling up studios I like and then killing them off it also makes me hate your platform as well… just sayin’

franwex16d ago

Unless the game would’ve been War Zone, or Fortnite level. No. Maybe even Hell divers 2 I doubt would’ve been enough.

Eonjay15d ago

Helldivers 2 realistically has earned about half a billion which is definitely a success considering it probably cost Sony $50 million to make.

However you would still need 140 releases to at least be that successful to break even on a ACT purchase.

This is how you know the goal for Microsoft was to reach those crazy subscribers numbers. Without them the whole plan falls apart.

Exvalos16d ago

No it would not have, the ABK deal was great for Microsoft but horrible for Xbox. Over 100 billion dollars in acquisitions. That money has to be made back. That ABK deal essentially destroyed Xbox as we know it.

A Flawed Game Till The Very End, Redfall Deserved To Die, But Not Arkane Austin

Hanzala from eXputer: "Redfall was a bland, repetitive game with no post-release support; it deserved to die, but why kill Arkane Austin over one mistake?"

z2g19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

What short memories everybody has. According to the internet they became “the worst studio” after redfall… the internet made redfall a bigger deal than redfall just being a shitty game becaus *gasp* Xbox bought them and” just wanted shitty gamepass games so quality wasn’t a priority”.
(The reality was it was just rushed to market to fill a release hole).

Everybody wants Xbox to fail but as soon as closures start happening suddenly that was never the hope at all and Xbox is just evil.

What has happened to humanity. Being so extreme with viewpoints paints everybody into a hypocritical corner where the side of the story your on depends on which side makes Xbox look worse. Read the internet. Your disagrees are lies.

Shame. Gamers never want to accept their role in all the shit.

My heart goes out to those laid off. Not sure why those studios had to close but I suspect they were costing more money to operate than they were brining in revenue. It does cost money to fix games. Cyberpunk’s road to redemption was prob approaching the price of the original game.

That sucks and I’m angry about it but that’s also business and I’m in the same boat myself at my job as we speak… so it’s not like I don’t have sympathy. But I’m tired of the short memories, the lack of true empathy and opinions being driven by branding. Disgusting.

MIDGETonSTILTS1719d ago

People wanted Xbox to succeed, especially after THE biggest media acquisition in history and effectively owning the entire existing Western RPG genre; but we knew they would fail, and they’d drag down an entire genre with them.

Nobody wanted this, but it was foreseen.

Arkane Austin Was Working on a Big Redfall Update for May Before Microsoft Ditched the Game

The now abandoned Redfall had a roadmap of support that was being actively worked on before Microsoft scrapped all development and closed its developer, IGN can reveal.

jznrpg20d ago

But Xbox fans told us MS buying these studios was going to be more games for everyone

Chocoburger19d ago

Couldn't even let them finish the major update that was supposed to come out this month for a game that desperately needed an update? Spencer is such a douche.
