No mention of a DVD in this ad. They talked about perfecting the picture and the crystal clear picture plus HD sound. The 60 sec. commercial ended with "own it on Blu-ray". The commercial directly following it was the "Entertainment Unleashed" PS3 tv spot. It featured many PS3 games and The Dark Knight Blu-ray. Pure ownage! :)

The video is not "clear proof". I personally can see the difference on MY tvs, with both a bluray and an upscaling dvd player but surely not in this video. And for the record, movies on my non-upscaling dvd player looks just as good. Bluray movies have a clear picture and better sound but it is not a "major leap" over DVD. Sorry, if you expected something else that's just my opinion on it.

Many only comment on the picture being "clearer" but I have two other aspects that turn my head and that is color and sound. Not only are the frames clearer and sharper but the colors in BD are much more vibrant and the sound is simply amazing. That is why I go BD now and have yet to buy a single DVD since the PS3 came out. I have hundreds of DVD's still and have replaced a few of them since but that is a whole other story for a later thread.

@ CrippleH - "Only an idiot thinks upscaled dvd is close" This is a very stupid comment to make. There are many factors to consider here, size of TV owned, quality of TV owned, viewing distance, eye sight, there are many factors that rule out the use of uneducated blanket statements like yours.
I personally love the increased sound and picture quality that you achieve with blu-ray but then again i have a quality HD TV that is large enough to show the difference in PQ at the distance that i sit from the TV and an HDMI receiver. I also have 20/15 vision. Many people are not in the same boat as myself so they may not appreciate the difference in PQ and lets face it, some people still watch VHS.
Just because you own a PS3 doesn't mean you have to post stupid comment to support blu-ray. I support blu-ray and i don't own a PS3 and you don't see me spouting stupid comments. Then again the maturity level of many members on this site is quite low.
The other problem with blu-ray that the video pointed out is the cost-benefit analysis that you have to go through. Blu-ray is still pricey but once the discs themselves hit the price of current new release DVD versions of the same movie and the players drop another $100 across the board, then i think adoption will take off.

Bravo and +bubbles for mentioning a screen size and not just typing "blu-ray FTW" like so many other people. I agree that if you are watching blu-ray on a 57 inch HDTV at the correct viewing distance and you can not see a difference then something is wrong.

1) TV SIZE directly affects upscaling quality. While 1080p Will look great on 70inch screens, dvd upscale will not.

2) The Raw uncomperssed Audio tracks on bluray movies vs. standard dvd audio is leaps and bounds better.

It doesn't matter what size HDTV you have there is a huge difference between Blu-Ray and Upscale DVD. I have a 26 inch HDTV and a 42 inch HDTV and Blu-Ray looks much better on both. Uscaling DVD does improve the Picture on HDTV's but not enough to really compete with Blu-Ray. Nothing beats a true high def (Blu-Ray) Picture.

Not trying to sound like a commercial but Blu-Ray is the best.

I have both the ps3 and 360. I have only 1 bluray movie (spiderman 3) and I have the 360 hddvd drive and a few more movies (5 freebies). I just got a new 42" samsung. While spiderman 3 looked really impressive on bluray, I was equally impressed with transformers on hddvd. I bought the regular dvd version before I got the hddvd drive and transformers (as one of the free movies).

Honestly I can't tell the difference in the visual quality at 720p between bluray and hddvd. I can tell a difference between the hddvd and dvd (of the same movie). I know I would need the bluray copy to really do a personal comparison, but what would be the point.

I like movies and "prefer" to get them on dvd for one simple reason. Flexibility. I can take the dvd on the go for the kids or watch it in any room of the house with a tv/dvd in it. Blu is nice (really nice) but at the moment it isnt as versatile as dvd (for me personally).

I almost bought the 50" samsung (pn50a450) for $899 but settled for the 42" version (pn42a450) for $649. $250 diff when both did the same specs wasnt worth it to me. Now I am looking to replace my 30" samsung crt hdtv with a 32" lcd. I wasnt sure which was better for games. I chose plasma for the deeper colors and contrast when watching movies.

I figured LCD would be better for games but please correct me if I am wrong. I am looking for one that can do at least 1360x768 which most LCD's do but plasma's...not so much. The 50" samsung could have done that but I chose otherwise.

Highly agreed by who? You don't need to go as high as 60 inches to lose quality with 720p. Quality is lost with a 720p image on any TV above 32 inches, so that means that the 40 inch to 52 inch range you're saying will show 720p well...will in fact look like crap compared to BR. That's why you don't see 32 inch tv's or below running 1080p, except a few Sharp models like the LC32GP1U (or newer models) which is just an expensive 32 inch gaming TV that doesn't truly need the 1080p since 720p would look exactly the same.

Whether the DDL image is better than an upconverted dvd is relative, but with the compression and whatnot I wouldn't be surprised if DDL was generally worse, but then again I wouldn't be surprised if upped DVD looked worse either.

You're not quite correct.

I own a PS3. Guess what format I use for movie watching?
Guess again...I use Blu-Ray, DVDs AND DLC.

I buy the Blu-Ray version for the "keeper" movies, and this list grows by the week.
For movies that I want to watch, and have a hard copy of, but don't consider keepers, I'll get the DVD version.
Then there are the occasions where I'm sitting in front of the TV late at night and feel like watching a stupid comedy or something to pass the time...that's when I'll do a rental from the PS Store.

So, I believe there is a place for each format, with Blu-Ray slowly eating into DVD as more people switch over. But there will always be a market for DLC, and I don't see it competing with Blu-Ray directly. Not until I can download a version that gives me exactly the same image and sound quality as Blu-Ray.

- People wanting physical media formats to own and call their own.
- Storage space and pricing
- DRM schemes, easily transferable services.
- Picture Quality (sorry, but even "720p" on Netflix or Live isn't true HD, its usually upscaled and CANT compare to a true 1080p source)
- Sound Quality
- Special features/Extras included on the disc missing
- File sizes
- Download caps being instituted by ISPs
- Broadband availability and reliability

BluRay needs to overcome pricing of the discs, and HDtv adoption, as well as public perception and economic woes.

So please, stop acting like BD or DLC killed your mother and raped your sister. It's a god damn format. It's an OBJECT. People treat it like its a life or death situation. They can, and will, coexist for a while.

I didn't do my homework like you did but it doesnt take a genius or magnefying glasses to see the different. I got a 42inch 1080p samsung and watched a couple of my DVD upscale and it felt "grainy". Blue-ray well .... felt crisp and sharp.

So yeah , Blue-ray for the win .

I would definitely buy more if the price was right. Love em but still feel its to expensive at the moment.

That was a funny video. I would of liked to know what kind of player they used for the up converting because that can make a huge difference. Using a low quality player like the Sony compared to a high quality player like the Oppo player is a huge difference. But of course the bluray is better. But the difference is not massive.

1080p resolution is twice the amount of pixels, over 1 million, than 720p.

Film content shot on 35 mm film generally has about 1400 lines of horizontal resolution on a 1st generation master compared to 1080 for that format. 720 is around the number you get at an average theater.

ANY TV would show more of the detail in film on 1080p vs 720p. That you need a smaller size screen to see the difference is complete myth. Yes, there is less with 720p vs 480p but you are still cutting out the same fragment from the overall picture and it will add up in the end and it does. Test your ps3/360 1080p monitor, any size down to 14 inches, which you must not have, and do a browser at 480 then 720 then 1080 and tell me their is not a gigantic difference between the two.

This follows over into whatever you are doing. 24 inches is about perfect for true bluray close up, but it could still improve with higher resolutions. Bluray is simply just good enough to start a collection with. Normal DVD is paltry spare and downright ugly when compared to bluray. Some film's negatives like Baraka on bluray are scanned at 8000 resolution at great costs to preserve all the detail with more to spare. Consumers will prolly not see this detail for twenty five years. This is meant for 75mm film so you know there is a difference when you have 4 times the resolution. You don't just magically have a tv screen size that cuts off detail. You must be a teenager and it shows, you don't know what the **** you are talking about.

Seriously, you would need an 14 inch tv not to be able to see the difference when you are close to your tv between 720p and 1080p. At ten feet there are still many apparent differences in any good bluray film master.

True HD 1080p or i makes all film better. 720 is no substitute unless the game or source you are playing is native to that format.

An upscaler has just as many pixels as a blu-ray disc. It's just a matter of whether or not those pixels are original or calculated from the surrounding pixels.

a good upscaler can definately perform comparably to blu-ray. It's definately acceptable if you only have to pay 1/2-1/4 the price per disc.

I disagree with both of you. I have had a Ps3 since the beginning and I have a 56 inch 1080p samsung tv. I also have a top of the line onkyo 7.1 surround sound system with the top of the line oppo upconverting dvd player. Read up on the oppo, it is considered on the the best upconverters you can buy and cost equivalent to the xbox 360 arcade.

Let me know tell you that there is a big difference between Bluray and the upconverter. Although the upconverter is better than a regular dvd, the quality also depends on the source of the dvd you are watching. If the original movie is on dvd is of low standard, older movies, then it will look like Shiat! ONly the best of dvds, Criterion collection, superbits, look great on the upconverter, but those dvds cost jsut as much if not more than Blurays.

The upconverter simulates pixels so it can never be close to BLuray.

I haven't even mentioned the sound quality difference. Bluray is spectacular!!!

All the Bluray haters are really missing out on some really great entertainment. Have you ever seen a porno in high def?? SHiat beats the shiat out of dvd I'll tell you.

DVD Upscale= Almost HD, Wannabe HD, etc...

Paying extra for Blu-ray DVD's are no issue for me and I think they are worth it. At first I thought paying $25+ dollars for a Blu-ray was a little steep, but I've gotten accustomed to it. Plus, Amazon.com and other places sell Blu-rays at discounted prices and that's where I always get my Blu-ray DVD's.

This weekend my sister bought Hellboy 2 on Standard DVD and we were watching it on my HDTV and it was being upscaled through my PS3, and the entire time I was watching the movie, I was wishing I was watching it on Blu-ray.

I dont have the blu version myself but have the dvd and hddvd version. Big difference between them and I can only guess that the blu looks just as impressive.

edit: found the comparison I was looking for (sans dvd upscale) and the two hd formats are VERY close to each other. Blu wins by a hair. I win because I got both and can get cheap hddvd movies now although I prefer to get all my movies on dvd.

There is no difference between HD-DVD Transformers and Blu-ray transformers picture wise. Unless you are using a HD-DVD player that dosent support 1080p.
But who really cares now HD-DVD may you rest in peace, converting all mine to WMV files.

Also seen a 13gb 1080p WMV version of The Dark Knight the other day. Bloody fantastic, WMV is now my choice of codec when ripping my HD-DVD`s. Anyone who can spot the difference between a good WMV rip and blu-ray must have super vision. Alot better than H.264

I have known the true beauty and vibrant clarity of Blu-ray since i first popped one in my PS3. It really is a fantastic format and the quality is stupendous. Up-scaling a DVD is a guess on the part of the player. When has constant guessing ever been better than complete information?

Blu-ray will have a decent life as an optical format. As the years pass it will fade away, just as all new technologies do, and it will pave the way for future, full 1080p digital distribution and streaming. Until then, appreciate Blu-ray for making truly quality content available today.

P.S. I bought the two disc special Blu-ray edition of Transformers on Black Friday for ten bucks. How is that for the price of HD? Hell yeah!

So far more people buy DVDs than blu-ray movies... so, as of today lots of people are not running to the stores and replacing all their DVD players and TV sets like if their life depends on it and blu-ray is being over for over 2 years. I know this kind of things take time. but it will also take lots of convincing that those extra pixels that blu-ray offers over upscale DVD are a must have during this economical troubled times.

Like you said. You need to replace all your equipment and movies to really take advantage. Right now that aint gonna happen for me. I just got me a new 42" samsung plasma and wow what a difference it makes to EVERYTHING. Not just movies but games and regular tv.

Currently I prefer to get dvd because it is a convenience. I have far more dvd players than hd players (two so far). I like to watch a movie at bed time or let the kids take one on the go.

Eventually things will all be blu but not without the high price for admission (hdtv's and players).

Since BD is more expensive than DVD, I've been just replacing the keeper movies out of my collection. Slowly but surely my BD collection is growing, but nothing near my DVD collection. It's like 4 to 1 at the moment. As far as DLL goes, I use that bandwidth for online gaming.

Didn't stop DVD's from becoming the dominant format. I know it's worth it for me. I've got a 92" screen with my 1080p projector. Blu-Ray's the only way to go. Ugh, yea that is true. Of course our eyes see many more pixels, but what you're saying means that the pixels are not enough if the image on the tv took up our entire vision...which is not the case.

I say near perfect because when you distance yourself from a tv (usually recommended is I think 3 times the size of the tv, so 32" times 3 gives a optimal viewing distance of about 96" or about +-8ft) the image gets better. The point is that when you are at an optimal distance, the eyes reach a point where the image can't get clear, or much clearer...sure our eyes can see more pixels then 1080p can show, but when the tv only takes up a portion of your vision it gives "near perfect" quality.

I agree with you if you keep your tv less than 2 feet from your face, but then that would just bring up other problems.

I bought a PS3 for the upcoming games at the time (Warhawk at that point)...trusted the brand and new it would get some great games through out the generation...but I wasn't having the HD gimmick...I didn't care about BD, or HD DVD...as I was perfectly fine with my 100'ish collection of DVD's that took me nearly 10 years to aquire (i know some have more, but I only bought movies I loved...not like some people buying just random crap)...I had an HDTV, but not a huge one...and DVD's still looked great on it...

or so I thought...I bought Casino Royale on BD first...as the movie was pretty good, and it was one of the few BD's at the time to have a really good transfer...and it wasn't even comparable...the difference is literally as big as vhs to DVD on some televisions (the bigger obviously, the more pronounced the difference)...

I haven't completely fallen into it yet...as the price for BD compared to DVD simply isn't acceptable yet...I still will take a $10 DVD over a $30 BD, unless its a absolutely must have movie for me (the dark knight for example)...

but a lot of you need to understand that this is the first real holiday season where BD is the ONLY format to own HD content on...BD WILL make a killing this season, its already confirmed...the price is in line...and nearly every new release is also on BD...its happening, just as DVD did...in japan BD is already at 50% of optical disc sales for movies, Europe isn't far behind...the US is the only area draggin its feet so far, and the dark knight can almost single handedly change that...

and don't give me that XBL/Netflix HD streaming BS...its crap compared to BD, and if you don't know that...its because you haven't watched a real BD yet...most of those XBL HD movie rentals are not even studio transfers, its some outside party scaling it and re-recording it, without having the original source...netflix confirms that in the fine print on their website (something along the lines of 'the HD transfer of some content was not handled by the publisher and/or studio, and therefor is not responsible for content quality')...thats how they do a lot of HD content on the PSN as well...

not to mention the sound...streaming crap isn't even 5.1 usually, let alone uncompressed HD sound...not a big deal now, but as better recievers become cheaper, it will be a major issue...

just let it go...BD is around to stay...despite your best efforts...Sony is taking over...again...the sooner you accept it, the happier you will be...you can argue with this MS DD pushing all you want, as that is no where near a viable alternative (as it doesn't have anywhere near the bandwidth support from residential ISPs, nor does it have enough support from the studios themselves)...its so stupid to see articles like this plagued with 360 idiot fanboys screaming about how BD is not needed, and DD is the immediate future...you were telling us for 3 years how you own a 'game console only'...so why do you even give a shat?...

I think you need to re-read the post by ultimolu then my comment may make more sense. I was referring to the visual diff between hddvd and blu. They were pretty much the same with an edge going to blu for a slightly higher bit rate. Audio wise the winner is blu because of the extra space on the disc for true hd. Anyone who has both (or all 3) formats has more choice in the movie they want to pick up.

I have lots of dvd's and only 1 BR movie. I do have 6 hddvd's because they were free (transformers being one of them). Movies I dont have yet (and are still available) I can pick up much cheaper than blu (or even dvd) on hddvd. If I wanted to. More newer movies I really want hd versions of I will get on blu (obviously) and if I just want to pick it up for the kids then it will be regular dvd.

You jumped to the wrong conclusion without reading the original post. It is obvious that blu is better than dvd. No one is disclaiming otherwise.

my frind had a 720p 32" HDTV and played his ps3 games and watched blu-ray muvies and so on,i just bought a 46" samsung 6500 series 120hz LCD HDTV (came out like 4 months or less ago),and ben playin ps3 games and watchin ps3 movies like CRAZY (just got hellboy 2 on BD and WAHOO!),and i just recently went over to my buds house to play some ps3 games and watch BD movies and HOLY CRAP there is a BIIIIIGGG difference to me and i was able to see it right off the bat and looked like SD lol.. and you guys should know that blu-ray quality accually helps your eyes as DVD DOES NOT (or upscaled DVD too).

mY mom has to were glasses all the time but i picked up hancock and once she started watching it,it was hurting her eyes so she took off her glasses and she was AMAZED at how much better he vision got wen watching it on BD clarity.
i admit that BD movies can be expesive (hence i dont have a huge BD library) but theres PLENTY of used or even new copies for hella cheap online or even at certain hole-in-the-wall stores.

All you cheap folks had to do was get the $128 magnavox bluray player from Walmart last friday...and you could have gotten iron man for $9.99 or $16.00 at walmart or best buy...and you would have been set.

Bluray even looks better on a 40 inch or higher tv...they showed it. Its the colors and sound folks.

Remember a bluray player will also upscale a crappy DVD too, probably even better than a cheap upscalling DVD player. You get the best of both worlds.

DVD may not be just as good in terms of picture quality, but the real question is whether DVD is good enough to keep people satisfied. I don't presume that I can answer for everyone, but I can say that there isn't enough of a compelling reason to start replacing my DVD collection with Blu-Ray. I'll buy some new movies on Blu, but for the most part DVD is still good enough.

Upscaling can never be as good a proper HD, it can only guess at the missing lines.

Multi-format games will never look better on PS3 due to blu-ray, but exclusives will benefit from it. There is so much more space for textures etc.

I must admit though that Fallout3 looks great on PS3 and based on the install size of the 360 version it is only about 6GB, which is amazing (that they've sneezed so much into so little space).

My PS3 makes My Sony's HDTV 40" bleed colors with blue-ray movies. It was much difference compare to my 32" VIZIO with same setup.

Get High quality TV if you really want to enjoy blue-ray. Don't forget the sound system. It is expensive hobby but You will be very satisfied with your investment. Don't fall for cheap.

I totally agree. I brought 32" Vizio and I used to say its all I need for gaming until I brought 40"Sony and I started to use my PS3 for blue-ray movies. I will still say 40" is decent size for my home (until I get bigger size) but the quality of vizio and sony is almost sdtv to hdtv difference. When I saw Rocky on Blu Ray at Circuit City I was stunned!!! It look better than anything on DVD!!! You can truely see the difference in quality(My eyes were glued to the tv). It look like someone use a home made true Hi-def camera to film(It has a blue feeling to it) the movie rather than using a movie camera. It hard to explain but it looks so real!!!

For me, the major advantage of video on Blu-ray over DVD is the vibrancy of the colours. Dvds in an upscaling player seemed washed out in comparison. Still, it's hard to tell the difference in picture quality if you sit at the recommended distance but the vibrant colours give Blu-Ray away everytime.

I had an upscale DVD player before I got my PS3 and the difference is night and day on my 50inch Sony 1080p. I still get people that wonder why I buy blu-ray and not regular DVD and I tell them until you see for yourself and experience it, STFU!!!! My girlfriend just got me HellBoy 2 on BD, and she is no videophile, but she can tell the difference! Blu-Ray for life! All my new movies I buy come on Blu-ray baby!
