Games that require subscriptions generally suck and MMO’s just aren’t my thing the majority of games were free to play online it was an extension of multiplayer for free. I’ve never said Sony are perfect for one second who is? They sure ain’t and I’m not but they absolutely smashed it this gen I not talking sales and numbers talking great console great price and more importantly an abundance of great games but no Sony aren’t perfect Vita was pretty epic yet Sony didn’t feel the need to support it with many first part games all the big hitters that PSP got exclusive spin offs for skipped vita and instead just got ps2 ports. The lack of 1st party games killed it, and Microsoft did exactly the same this generation didn’t support it themselves Costs too much but they also didn’t go all out trying to secure 3rd party exclusives and spending money to get deals they just hoped after last gen the devs would just continue to support them, doesn’t work like that. Now the money’s dried up so have all the timed exclusives and it’s bitten them on the arse big time.
Servers cost money Sure but when a yearly churned game earns a billion on day1 I think they can cover it.

Realistically, pay to play online shouldn't exist for any game. None of that stuff MS did needed to be charged for. They just charged for it, and people paid for it. If people hadn't paid for it, MS would have dropped the paid requirement. Maybe it wouldn't have become as big a deal to make better servers and services if they had, but eventually they would have had to get with the times.

MS didn't do something revolutionary by allowing updates. That was going to be a thing with being able to connect consoles to the internet. FF11 on PS2 got regular updates as well. PS3 games got regular updates. Regular updates were already fairly common on PC. The quality control you speak of didn't stop more and more games releasing being buggy or broken on day one. Any other quality control was their standard compliance mandates, which was a thing that NIntendo started which helped save consoles after the video game crash, and is ubiquitous through today.

Well, the fact that ppl were willing to pay back then seems to show that online play was requested by many players.
And like you said it, PC players were enjoying online play way before PS2 so the real question how come it barely came to console at a time where broadband Internet was becoming the norm?

My answer is that companies saw no value in online at the time.
Online meant, more $ in development cost, support while getting 0$ in return on initial sales and risking that players keep playing X game instead of buying the other game by the publisher.
Just to prove this, remember that Capcom saw no reason to release the online mode in Europe for resident evil Outbreak or never released an online mode for their fighting games (despite having online options on Japanese Dreamcast games).

Also, remember that the free to play server on PC wasn’t provided by companies but by ppl like me that used to host server (Unreal Tournament) on dedicated pc. Do you remember refreshing server lists back in the day?
Updates, DLC, Skins were mods created by users not the companies behind the game.
The best example would be Counter-strike that started as a free mod to half-life.

And last, let’s not forget that even when the 360 was out most of the games were running on P2P connexion and not dedicated server.

The lack of online interest on console before 360 was also apparent in MS competitor Nintendo and Sony that before the 360 success had no real interest in providing online.
The Wii never really had an online strategy and ppl seem to forget that Sony had trouble with establishing the Ps3 online store in japan before the worldwide release. Just remember that Virtuafigter 5 (a japan Ps3 launch game) had no Online mode built in it while the Xbox version came with online play or that Sony was providing a Ps3 version of the ps2 tekken5 with online play to have ppl wait until Ps3 store and infrastructure was up.

So yeah, we might hate it but MS did cement online component for console and
We can also credit MS with establishing things like Xbox Store that paved the way for digital distribution like PSN and Steam.

Because Microsoft led the industry in charging for online play which set the standard in a negative way. And because there were so many, "It's just options." "It improves the online experience."

That now, we all have to pay with Nintendo joining in if we want to play online. But those gamers on PS3 and PC are playing just fine at $0 dollars. Without having to pay 7-10 years of online that's the amount of a new console price. So, thanks Microsoft.

1) Xbox on different platforms...
Let's see PC is free to play and I doubt that playing Xcloud on your smartphone will require a gold account to play online so MS will charge a portion of xbox community...

2) It's already out when you have Game pass
How come nobody talks about the auto conversion that MS is already pulling with Game pass and gold?
My friend tried the 3 months Gamepass ultimate and had the rest of is Gold account convert into extra months.
In logic, he should be allowed to keep in the yearly gold subscription but nope.

3) It will help promote Game pass and make more money to MS
It's all about perception,

1- I have stopped paying for live years ago when MS allowed releases of their games on PC and decided to purchase the Xbox version digitally so I could get the pc version for free.
The only game that I was sad a bit of letting go was Halo5 but with Ps4, Vr, and PC, letting go 1 game for a yearly 60$ was not that hard.

Actually Game pass (or PsNOW) is probably the best value I have seen recently!
Like you a was sceptic and wanted no part of it until I tried it at black Friday (2$ for 3 months)
Well, I already saved tons of money tks to the program (Bloodstained, DMC5)and made me discover Demon's Tilt, After Party and allow me and my bro to have a common library to play games.
And little plus it gave me back my right to play Halo 5 online :)

Unfortunately, you'll have to purchase a majority of what you listed. You don't have to purchase the game (Warzone is free!) However, you'll definitely need to pick yourself up a console. I'd recommend the X1S as the X1X wouldn't be worth it with the Series X on the horizon. While Warzone is free, it's mandatory you pick yourself up that Xbox Live subscription, you'll not be able to play this free game without that additional charge. Internet connection, HD television and electricity are absolutely necessary to bring this whole experience together! Now, with this last part you're in luck! You're NOT required to manually control this game. Simply invite some friends over who enjoy these types of games and let them play for you. Bam! You're now freed up of that pesky task of having to manually control the game!

It may seem like a lot but you can pick up most of the above in one trip to Best Buy. Or you could order it off Amazon if leaving the house isn't your thing. Get in touch with your local utility and internet providers and they"ll be happy to get you setup and ready to roll.
