This week we talk framerate vs. resolution, leaked Xbox Series X photos, a GDC Next-Gen Developer Poll, what the new PS4 Back Button might say about PS5, and our feature topic: Will Backward Compatibility Affect When You Upgrade to Next-Gen?

darthv721582d ago

Only 18% of devs are working on next gen games....? That seems really low. But maybe it lends some credibility to the notion that real next gen games dont show up until after the first year or two of a systems release.

LOGICWINS1582d ago

The PS3 didn’t really hit its stride until 2009 when Killzone 2 (one of my favorite games of all time) and Uncharted 2 came out.

I think Sony will attempt to buck this trend though. Spiderman 2 will be out by next year.

As far as the 18% figure.... realize that most devs aren’t creating AAA games. Most devs are better off developing for current gen since thats where the money is.

nirwanda1581d ago

Most devs are making mobile phone games, small teams with a quick turnaround and low costs.

@The PS3 didn’t really hit its stride until 2009 when Killzone 2 (one of my favorite games of all time) and Uncharted 2 came out.”
Really because I and a lot of people remember a little game called Warhawk that was exclusive day one and have a huge community that was playing it for years after it was released and even after the sequel Starhawk was released so please stop commenting like you for a fact or you was playing PlayStation 3 games

LOGICWINS1580d ago

@1Victor Did I offend you?

1Victor1580d ago

No no offense it’s just that you was talking like a PS expert and it’s clearly by your comments history that you are far from it and will say anything to make your point look truthful even using lies like this
“The PS3 didn’t really hit its stride until 2009 when Killzone 2 (one of my favorite games of all time) and Uncharted 2 came out“

Exactly! I rather wait one year or so to play true next gen games rather than be mislead into buying a current gen games "dressed" as a true next gen games only playable on next gen system.

If Sony´s "PS5 Only" marketing is anything to go by, I´m expecting PS5´s launch games lineup to blow up all SX´s "current gen games" launch lineup out of water.

The truth will be revealed soon. ;)

Who says true next gen games can't be available at launch or even close to launch?

@MasterCornholio Shadowfall looked pretty...but it was a mediocre game that was obviously rushed. This coming from a HUGE Killzone fan. Infamous Second Son on the other hand was excellent! To this day the facial animations in that game impress me.

If Im dropping $499 for a PS5 at launch, I want Horizon 2 with little to no load times and photo realistic graphics. Sony typically has abysmal launch lineups but I’ve always bought Playstations at launch regardless because I know the games will come later. Going forward, they need to earn my money at launch. SHOW me on DAY ONE what the PS5 can do!

Obscure_Observer1581d ago

@MasterCornholio

"Who says true next gen games can't be available at launch or even close to launch?"

Nobody said it can´t. It always has been done since forever. What I´m questioning is: Will be the diference between PS5 and SX´s first party launch games lineup night and day as the examples you posted showing the generationl leap between PS3 and PS4 games?

According to some people:

SX´s first party launch games will be like:
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/p_nB...

PS5´s first party launch games will be like:

Like I said, truth will be revealed soon enough. ;)

MasterCornholio1581d ago (Edited 1581d ago )

@Logic

"Shadowfall looked pretty."

That was my point. It is possible to have games at launch that look alot better than previous gen games. But I do understand that overtime developers will maximize the visuals in their games and they will look alot better towards the end of a generation than the beginning. A good example of this are games like Gears 5 and God of War compared to launch titles for the PS4 and the Xbox One.

I'm expecting to see next gen looking games at launch or during the launch window of these systems. It would be stupid for any console manufacturer not to provide next gen looking games at the launch of a console. You really need some really pretty games at launch to show people how much more powerful the new systems are.

This is something that has happened at the beginning of each generation so I expect the same with the new generation of consoles.

MasterCornholio1581d ago

@Obscure

"According to some people:"

Well that's according to you because you believe that Infamous is a title on Xbox. If you didn't know Infamous is a franchise produced by Suckerpunch which is a developer that's owned by Sony.

Anyways like I said to LogicWins there will be launch titles that will look next gen when compared to games from the previous generation. Which is why I was comparing Infamous and Killzone to previous titles because they were launch window games.

Oh and next time do your research. It really isn't that difficult to do.

I think map sizes were probably the big change in generations from PS3->PS4. The limited memory on the prior gen made it so concessions would have to be made to how the maps were handled, as opposed to being more fluid like you saw in earlier games of the generation, and throughout. Other things like particle effects, or how many objects on screen were a good jump, but the core game design involving game play was probably possible on last gen consoles. I'd say that's fairly true for a good portion of games this gen, just there was more complexity to design as time went on.

I'm not sure memory would be such an issue for next gen games in terms of map size. So, I think the big changes we'll see early are going to be games which take advantage of the new ways to handle memory through SSD. Of course, graphics will improve, but that's a given.

Getting hung up on the pedantic, "What could possibly come early in the gen" seems rather moot until you have something to discuss about if it's something that can only be done on next gen. I feel with the current climate, chances are, Sony is going to explain what these games are doing that makes it so they can't run on next gen. At that point, then it's probably OK to discuss if that's true, or if Sony is just making something up.

Obscure_Observer1581d ago

@MasterCornholio

Lol. I don´t need to do any research. I was talking about the difference some people are expecting to see between SX and PS5, and used your Infamous images from PS3 and PS4 only to highligh those differences.

There´s a clear generational leap between Infamous 2 and Second Son. And generational leap is what some people are expecting from PS5 launch games compared to SX launch games.

Got it?

1Victor1580d ago

@logic and all the other half score Xbox fans I have a question why do you want Sony to show you what they got day one you aren’t going to buy a PS5 shouldn’t you be asking Microsoft to show you a reason to buy their new system day one instead of making excuses about true next gen start a year or two after the system release

Mithan1581d ago

Most games will be cross-generation to start with, probably for a couple years anyways and with 3rd party developers. The PS4 has an installed base of 100 million or so now, with another 50 million or so on the Xbox, it isn't like they are going to abandon that huge user base, especially with how expensive it is to make new games these days.

xX-oldboy-Xx1581d ago

You're correct - cross gen games are the domain of 3rd party devs - NOT - console manufacturers. They have to give a legitimate reason to upgrade.

If HALO was a series x exclusive and turns out to be an amazing game - you've got yourself sold out console everywhere.

This is a no brainer.

Mithan1579d ago

Halo isn't relevant anymore as a system seller. Those days are gone.

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

jznrpg2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I want RPGs for PSVR2! Good ones of course

shinoff21831d 23h ago

If it had some rpgs I would buy right fking now. It looks dope and alot of fun, but it's biggest game resident evil 4(maybe) I've got no interest in. I'm not a fan of racing games, even with that metro game coming i was never much into that series. Rpgs would be fantastic.

MrNinosan1d 21h ago

Lemme know if ya wanna play some Zenith 🙌
Bought it at release, but haven't played it more than 1-2 hours but for sure on my "todo list".

Cacabunga1d 21h ago

Normal when they released mostly cross gen games so far. That’s a lot of money saved..
We haven’t seen what PS5 can do yet. 4years in and PS4 games still look great to me. The gen leap isn’t quite there yet.

--Onilink--1d 22h ago

The interesting metric for me is the $106billion in operating income/profit (not sales as mentioned in the article) reaching the same as the PS4 did with only half the consoles sold.

In particular because they all are supposed to be making the most per hardware sold after a few years when manufacturing costs are down.

So even putting inflation aside(and the higher console price), it is interesting that they could reach PS4 $ with just half the consoles sold.

Maybe there is more to the metric thats whats seen at face value, but they have clearly been making a lot more money than before on the software side (with also less games released I suppose, given its only been half the generation so far)

VersusDMC1d 22h ago

The bulk of the money has to be coming from the 30% cut on all games and microtransactions. Especially on all the free to play juggernauts like genshin, apex, fortnight, etc.

--Onilink--1d 20h ago (Edited 1d 20h ago )

@Versus

They are definitely making a lot on that for sure (which the $70 price increase factors into as well), but its not like many of those games werent around for the PS4 too.

They might be counting the gen as a whole and not just PS5 itself (so extra profit from PC sales, whatever that may be)

PS+ price increase and different tiers probably amount to part of that too.

But in general, its still quite a surprising metric. Half the time, half the consoles sold, less first party games released so far and still already making more of a profit than last gen is quite something, and as mentioned, there is probably more to it that we dont know, after all, since we are talking about operating income, all the expenses they have also factor into it, so it is also possible that they have found ways to significantly reduce that + all the means of increased revenue that appear to be factoring into the equation

All in all, just an interesting situation from a business perspective

porkChop1d 18h ago

It's for the whole generation, so it would likely be including PC. They also make much more profit on digital sales vs retail, and digital is far more prominent these days. The generation also started at the height of COVID when everyone was home, spending far more money on gaming/hobbies. It makes a lot of sense for this gen to be more profitable.

This will surely shut up all the new trolling accounts trying to spread lies and non facts in other articles comment sections before this article is posted.

Hofstaderman1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

Obscurely, those trolls or troll will not show in these articles as the truth is contradictory to his or their orchard-sized daily dose of copium and hopium.

Tacoboto1d 22h ago

Or... They're intentionally trolling you guys specifically. Because they know it upsets you so easily.

Name-dropping Orchard, after this many months? How long has it been and he's still in your thoughts?

Elda1d 22h ago (Edited 1d 22h ago )

I'm quite sure the individual is reading these positive comments downvoting & seething at the same time. Edit: It just downvoted my comment...lol!!

Hofstaderman1d 22h ago

No I'm entertained by this individual. I love unhinged people, they are so interesting lol.

repsahj1d 23h ago

Wow! I am super impressed that in just 4 years, ps5 already caught up to the PS4's. Congratulations.

JackBNimble1d 5h ago

That happens when half of your games are cross platform. I'm still waiting to see what the ps5 is capable of, because they sure haven't pushed any limits.

And where are all these ps5 exclusive games?

sagapo1d 23h ago

Not really surprised as Sony barely has any competition at the moment.
