Control is an overrated mess...its narrative was borderline nonsense and incoherent. Piecing together the narrative was a chore considering you have to read 100 documents that are all visually jarring to read.

I'm glad they at least found time to nominate Disco Elysium but no nods for GOTY.

The art direction in Gears 5 is stellar and diverse. The third act itself is worthy of the award, the red sands of Vasgar and the military/industrial design from the people that live there are echoed through the armaments as well. The enemy and character design are great with the warden being truly threating sight to behold.

The same CANNOT be said for Death Stranding actually. DS has 17 perfect scores with only 2 being from PS sites.. While Gears 5 has 6 perfect scores with 2 being from MS sites.

There were a lot of very good games this year, they aren't all nominated for GOTY. DS has the most perfect scores this year, so is a much more likely candidate.

Gears 5 was a good game but it doesn't make it goty it's a great revitalising title for the franchise but the first act and third act were a slog and the second act and final moments were what everyone raves about so 20% of the game really doesn't make it goty worthy.

If Smash is your GOTY/Fighter of the Year, good for you. I did acknowledge it as a runner up in the Fighter of the Year meaning that if it did win Fighter of the Year, I would be cool with it and understanding.

I questioned Control, because I felt it was just so-so. But, thinking about it, it did try something different, and had it's own appeal. It had it's generic aspects, but also had some creative design as well. I don't think I"d consider it GOTY though. It seemed to take it safe too many times which could have propelled it into greatness, but it showed a lot of promise if they refined some of the game play aspects.

As I was perusing the list I saw a lot of Death Stranding which made me nod profusely. Design, music, art direction, narrative, game direction, etc - I think all of that should go to Death Stranding.

I was also thrilled to see that Days Gone got absolutely no recognition here because it doesn't really deserve any, save for maybe art direction because the interpretation of Oregon was quite good.

However, Days Gone is not brilliant in any way - the story is poor, and it's not particularly well made. It's an extremely OK game. Objectivity and honesty saw Days Gone not make it to this list, and that makes me happy. No subservience and kowtowing to large fan(boy) base for fear of backlash.

I'm personally pleased.

I completely agree. Days Gone is my GOTY so far. It was just so much better than I expected it to be. I couldn't stop playing until I got the platinum trophy. There are so many strange choices in almost every category. I'm only a few hours in on Death Stranding but seems pretty cool so far. A little slow but very cool and interesting.

Best Performance Nomination: Norman Reedus.

Let me just start by saying that I like Normal Reedus and have largely enjoyed him in all his roles whether he's killing zombies or delivering packages. But I think a lot of his 'acting' is just him being himself while following a script that he probably largely contributes to. He's a very no-nonsense, rugged dude in life and those qualities/attributes translate well to the roles he takes on. He doesn't really have to 'act' much. He's got his natural voice and attitude and those things do the work for him.

He was a natural fit for The Walking Dead and Death Stranding. I'm not saying he doesn't have to act because he certainly does, but his natural personality bears much of the workload or 'actload' he's tasked with.

Gears 5 gave us an array of game modes including Horde, Escape, Aracde, and traditional ranked multiplayer. Games like that are rare and they cater to fans rather than the trend.

I'd agree if not for Outer Worlds. It doesn't seem to do anything new. It's apparently better than Fallout, but if the scaling factor of the game is based on the Fallout standard, then it's not really a high bar. Fallout isn't some amazing RPG IMO. I'm not even sure I classify it as an RPG, despite it being nominated in that category.

If you think DS doesn't deserve the award, then what game do you feel actually does? Or is your comment just a precursor to how people are going to dismiss the award if it does happen to win? I know the latter will happen, but shouldn't people at least be aware of how the awards work before assuming that it's rigged?

There have been games in the past that Keighley probably would have given the award to in the past for how much he licked the backside of the dev or publisher or console maker during it's marketing phase, or because they gave him something for his show. But, somehow, other games won. Go figure.

Keighley is a pretty prolific figure among the industry. Not part of it, but certainly respected in it. He knows a lot of people, and is probably friends with a lot of them. I think his show sucks a**, but I've never felt he brought bias or influence to the awards themselves. For all his paid shilling, I actually believe he does have some level of ethical decency, because he isn't a complete douche and actually seems to love video games, instead of bringing them down all the time.

Lmao funny you mention a Sony exclusive. In God of War the hack and slash has way more depth in the gameplay and the story was great. Death Stranding gets amazing after Chapter 3. I agree it does start off slow but there's a reason why it's doing that. It felt fresh and unique.The story was great! Star Wars tried to copy *Dark Souls* and *Uncharted* a PS4 exclusive lol. The train level says it all. It reminded me of other games and it wasn't original. Death Stranding is more than just a game it's an experience and I have no regrets after playing a real masterpiece

I don't get what you are trying to say, that because other games were nominated Gears shouldn't be? I'm also surprised Metro Exodus wasn't nominated or Days Gone for that matter. Don't really understand the distinction between action and action/adventure? DMC and Astral Chain is in action but Sekiro in action adventure. What places Borderlands, Control, and Sekiro in action/adventure and not action? Exploration? Then Metro and Gears don't belong soley in action either.

Death Stranding, Resi, and Zelda make sense in adventure while Apex, Astral, COD, and DMC make sense in action but the others seem arbitrarily placed in one or the other.

And Borderlands makes more sense in RPG than Kingdom Hearts which imo would make more sense in one of the action categories.

Action/Adventure is a mind-numbingly useless "genre" descriptor in gaming.

Action Adventure is a very “catch all” genre. It I often included games like Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Batman Arkham series , RDR, GTA V, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, Metro series, Far Cry etc. The perviously mentioned games have some similarities, but they overlap heavily with differing genres.

I mean as you yourself noted with your comment further down action and action/adventure lump games together that shouldn't be. You're also right that shooter should have been a category.

Shooter would have Apex, COD, Metro, Gears, Borderlands, Division. Action should have been a category with DMC, Astral, Sekrio, Kingdom Hearts, Jedi, Katana Zero. Adventure or action/adventure should have been Control, Death Stranding, Resi 2, Links Awakening, Plague Tale, and Outer Wilds. (I added games to keep nominations at 6 like they had it).

I find it odd that Control got a game of the year nomination over DMC 5, Gears 4, and few other games.

I still find the categories for the game awards to be strange. For example they have best “action” game that lumps a bunch of genres together. Best shooter should be category separate from “action” game. And Metro Exodus is nominated as “best action game” despite it being a an Action adventure games. There is also no best technical graphics.

For me my GOTY has to go to Resident Evil 2. They did such an excellent job with that game even though it's a remake but it is structured very differently to the original. Capcom has been on a roll lately so I do hope it wins GOTY. They deserve it.

I agree, but I believe in GOTY to new IP instead of remakes. I know they did great, but it's far easier to remake a game that was already good, than making a brand new IP and make it excellent. I go for Control, second Sekiro.

My legit choice would be Days Gone but for some reason it's not a option.

If you do not own multiple systems your choice for game of the year should be toss aside. It’s a biased answer that do not take any other games on other systems seriously.

You might as well just list your nominations for ps4 only chart where it competes against other ps4 games.

Now for those that do own multiple systems common sense would put Smash Ultimate as game of the year not only is it well received by Sony, Microsoft, PC and Nintendo fans

Just a psa that Disco Elysium deserves a look, it's possibly the most incredibly written and detailed isometric rpg out there to date. it might not be to everyone's tastes but if you're a fan of Planescape, BG and so forth you need to give it a shot at some point- it's satisfying to see it got a couple nominations.

I really enjoyed Outer Worlds, and I'm a massive fan of MHW Iceborne - but ZA/UM's Disco Elysium should absolutely win best role playing game.

Disco is hugely original, extremely clever and innovates the genre in ways that no other game has this year.

I'm so pleased that it's getting a console release next year, any fan of RPG games owes it to themselves to play this amazing game.

Really surprised/disappointed that Days Gone received no nominations and Metro Exodus only received one nomination (Action Game) and wasn't nominated for GOTY. Both are easily my top two games I played this year. I'd say Days Gone edges over Metro though if I had to choose. Playing Death Stranding currently and enjoying it; but still not as good as the aforementioned.

Death Stranding is a blistering achievement & a fresh innovative game, which is why it's nominated in all of these categories. Polished to high heaven.

Gears 5 is a well-made but forgettable new entry in a stale franchise where its own developer shits on the audience of its multiplayer mode. Buggy to high hell.

It also ranks lower on Metacritic if you combine the PC and XB1 numbers. So, nah.

You’re combining meta scores to fit your narrative. Lol dude just stop please. Gears 5 is better and is scored better without the advantage of metacritic pulling low scores from its average. I know for a fact two really low scores disappeared from Death strandings scores. I have put about 20 hours in death stranding and I doubt I’ll be able to finish it. It’s a ups simulator with a cool sci fi setting and awful combat. I’m glad you think it’s good but look at that 5.8 user average on metacritic. Plenty of people agree with me about the game being boring

If Death Stranding wins, it will win fair and square. Geoff really has no say in the votes. Seriously people need to educate themselves better when it comes to these things. There's a jury that is formed of so many gaming journalists and personnel from all around the world that will decide who will get GOTY. The decisive factors that will make the jury choose which game will earn that award could be anything from creativity, buzz the game created, story, how original the game is compared to others and did it achieve what it wanted to achieve. How's the music score? How's the sound design? What about the gameplay and the graphics etc. They will judge the game based on that and that only. Basically the cumulative of all that will decide which game earns that title.
I picked Death Stranding because it's a game that made feel I was playing something original (for once) and because the story is engaging and the gameplay mechanics are built around it and the consistency of the theme of connection can be seen from start to end and it's nuts! Moreover, the social aspect of the game is PERFECT! It worked way beyond my expectations. I was worried about the social aspect, boy I was wrong! Yes, its core loop is mainly about delivering but Kojima made that aspect fun to play. He managed to make that core loop, addictive.
That being said, I loved RE2 and I thought it was an excellent example of how remakes should be done. I played it twice in a row and I think it deserves a lot of recognitions mainly because it was well done for a remake. But, remakes shouldn't be candidates for GOTY and that's my opinion of course. If there was a category for best remake, RE2 would win hands down! It's really a game that should serve as an example to others who attempt to remake a game.
