The Deafening Silence In Camp Sony Should Be Frightening For Its Competitors

GameRVW takes a look at the other side of the coin, and what the future may hold for Sony and its flagship PlayStation console.

Eonjay2119d ago

There are many layers to this. First the PS4 is so successful that Microsoft probably wants nothing more than for the PS4 gen to end. Second, as Drake mentioned "a wise man once said nothing at all". The Xbox One X was featured last E3 and this E3 Microsoft is already talking about a successor? The announcement of new hardware isn't gonna help sales of older hardware. Microsoft is so scared of having inferior hardware that they are already trying to set expectations this far in advance.

And with the rumors of Navi being made for the PS5 maybe they should be scared.

The truth is they haven't been silent at all. They just aren't as heavy to the PR constant spin, headline grabbing, twitter persona fest as the main competitor.

Srhalo2119d ago (Edited 2119d ago )

I feel like Microsoft has given up on growth and is just focusing on the core. it's the only explanation for why they keep talking about future devices so early. The non-core who hears a new console is right around the corner is just going to wait.

I feel like the X for example is mostly being bought by people who previously had an One versus new owners.

Obscure_Observer2118d ago (Edited 2118d ago )

@Srhalo

"I feel like the X for example is mostly being bought by people who previously had an One versus new owners."

I agree. but there´s a lot of Playstation and Nintendo console owners that never ever had an Xbox console before. IMO, the X is far more appealing to non Xbox gamers than the OG Xbox One ever was.

Phil Spencer´s Xbox One consoles are far better than Mattrick´s OG Xbox One console.

Goldby2118d ago

@obsure

I'd have to disagree on the one x statement.

The s would be far more appealing than the one x for non xbox players, at least Imo.

Why spend 500$+ for a console you would only be playing a handful of games on. No one would start their collection over just to brag about 4k on exclusives and 3rd party titles they already own on playstation.

If I were to buy one. I'm not going anywhere near the x. Waste of money when I can get the same thing out of the one s.

Aenea2118d ago

@obscure

Ehh, no, don't think the One X is more appealing if you've never owned an X1 before. If people buy an X1 now and already own a PS4, it's because they want to play exclusives and let's face it there aren't enough to warrant the price of the One X when a One S is more than sufficient for that. Someone heavily invested in PS4 isn't suddenly going to change preferred platforms, their friends won't go with and their trophies and all their bought games aren't being transfered automatically either so the PS4 will still be their main console.

If you only own the Switch, hmm, well, then there are quite a few games on X1 that aren't on the Switch and then suddenly a One X might be more appealing to some, then again if you only own a Switch at this moment in time you probably don't care all that much about power and resolution.

So no, the One S is still the most appealing Xbox for non Xbox gamers...

Obscure_Observer2118d ago (Edited 2118d ago )

@Goldby @Aenea

"The s would be far more appealing than the one x for non xbox players, at least Imo."

Fair point. But notice that i said that (imo) the X is far more appealing for non Xbox players when in comparission with the OG Xbox One back in the day. Obviously because it was underpowered and overpriced at launch thanks to mandatory Kinect. I wasn´t talking about the S, which is also a "Phil Spencer´s console".

"If I were to buy one. I'm not going anywhere near the x. Waste of money when I can get the same thing out of the one s."

I disagree. You can´t get the same out of the S. If you buy an Xbox console because of exclusives, one would guess that you want the best from those games. Both visually and performance.

In the end all comes down to personal preference. But for what i understand, you can´t have native 4K Games on the S for your brand new 4K tv. You´ll not be able to play Forza Horizon 4 at 60fps or even Gears 5 on SP mode at 60fps either just to name a few. Now, if you are a console only gamer, whose neither more games at 60fps whose also has way higher resolutions aren´t your thing, then yes, the S would be the perfect choice for you. :)

Edited - @Aenea

"Someone heavily invested in PS4 isn't suddenly going to change preferred platforms, their friends won't go with and their trophies and all their bought games aren't being transfered automatically either so the PS4 will still be their main console."

Miss, nobody said anything about PS4 owners leaving Playstation for Xbox. Please, don´t turn this conversation into some fanboy bs argument.

Godmars2902118d ago (Edited 2118d ago )

" IMO, the X is far more appealing to non Xbox gamers than the OG Xbox One ever was."

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Try, more expensive. It's accurate.

jaydiggler2118d ago

Probably mostly true, I had the One and the S and I upgraded to the X. But I personally have 3 friends that never owned a microsoft console before and they purchased the X, so there is some appeal to non xbox owners.

Jinger2118d ago (Edited 2118d ago )

"Mostly" may be true, but a couple of my friends and my brother in law bought the X without having a One. The 4k games and 4k player was a big factor in their decision

Goldby2118d ago

Obscure

And that's the issue I have with ms.

If they are only able to hit the 60 fps on their most recent overpriced 3rd console for their racing games, than that's an issue I have with how they develop their games.

I could care less about 4k. Resolution doesn't make a bad game good or a good game great.

Tetris is still Tetris even if it's 4k or even 8k.

For me, only one that would be worth it is the one s cuz the one isn't available any more

kevnb2118d ago

I feel like the x is mostly just sitting on shelves...

slavish02117d ago

People bought xbox s even though they announced x was coming in a year. People still buy xbox when all games are on pc. So no people aren't going to wait because they are working on future hardware. People buy iPhone x knowing there will be a better one next year. There are so many examples of y u dont know what you are talking about

FinalFantasyFanatic2117d ago

@Obscure_Observer,

Yeah, nah, there's almost nothing a Xonex can offer me this gen that I can't get out of my 360 (I'd probably prefer the og xbox over it too). If what little games I do want come to PC then I can safely ignore the Xone all together and invest more heavily into a Switch (I already plan to anyway).

Even 4k is not a compelling argument, I bought a very good 4k TV which has one of the best upscalers, not ideal but very playable. And since I can get almost every game it has on pc, I still win because I can play them in 1440p or 4k.

NeoGamer2322117d ago

That is not true. We see articles quite often on N4G about "Why should Microsoft continue with consoles?" and "Microsoft isn't going to build another console because they want you on PC".

By stating they have another console coming, they are creating certainty for people that buy and XB that there will be another device. And if they can ship their console with a bunch of great games a year earlier than PS they can may be able to return to the success that the 360 had by shipping a year earlier than PS3.

Microsoft is catering to its core and loyal customers. That is definitely important to keep the market share they do have. But, by going and buying those five studios they are also looking forward in building new games and that has been the biggest complaint about XB is the lack of its own exclusives. So they are addressing the issue.

FinalFantasyFanatic2117d ago

@NeoGamer232,

They could get out first, but the first year for most consoles is generally barren game-wise or it's full of games that release on both new and previous gens. Hopefully those new studios do bring some worthwhile exclusives to the table to make the next xbox relevant.

@Eonjay

"The Xbox One X was featured last E3 and this E3 Microsoft is already talking about a successor?"

Why are you acting to be so surprised? How many idiots said that Xbox was dead and that Xbox One X would be Microsoft´s last console? Phil Spencer has a clear roadmap and defined plan for X´s successor even before the X got released.

FYI, Phil Spencer talked about the X´s successor way before this year´s E3! 4 months before the X even hit your local store´s shelves!

But hey, guess what? Fanboys thought that he was lying! And here we are.

Now you´re informed ;)

gangsta_red2118d ago (Edited 2118d ago )

Agreed, Phil addressed the biggest concerns fans, critics and fanboys had of Xbox and that did include addressing the rumors Xbox going "third party" or getting out of the console business.

He confirmed it was false by saying that they are working on another console.

Would people rather have Phil say nothing then possibly announce and debut the new console next year only so we can come back and complain that MS didn't say anything and forced users to buy an X? Because we all know that's exactly what the narrative would have been if that would happen.

As for the silence from the Sony camp, they've always been this way and maybe it has something to do with just how the Japanese operate. Western devs/publishers are more social media conscience from what I noticed they always like to keep fans/users engaged through some type of interaction online.

Goldby2118d ago

If that was the case, ans he was actually talk g about the new console even before the x was out, he should stop being the head of the division.

The second you start talking about what is coming next, people begin yo hold off buying what's out now for what's coming.

Eonjay2118d ago

The only reason why anyone would think that there would be no new Xbox systems is because no one is really buying it and if Microsoft was really interested in anything besides selling services, it would be putting out content on the level of Sony which doesn't even has as much capital as Microsoft.

IamTylerDurden12118d ago (Edited 2118d ago )

Let's be honest, MS has been doing this all gen. Don't act like Phil needed to clear things up with the opposing fanboys so that is the reason he talked about Scarlet so early.

MS did the same thing with Cloud, DX12, "Scorpio", and now the next Xbox. They hyped each of these things incredibly early before they were actually viable and they did in order to garner hype in the brand. Xbox has been trailing the entire generation and overall it has been extremely lackluster.

People were disappointed when the XB1 came out running games at 720p with a $500 price tag. MS needed to sell people on the promise that their 1.3tf XB1 would magically become more powerful. So they hyped Cloud and DX12 in an unrealistic way and long before they would add any real benefit.

With the disappointment in power and rumors of a more powerful PS4 on the way MS needed something to counter that. They needed excitement and positive brand PR so they announced project Scorpio 18 months before it even released. This also helped kill the hype and sales of PS4 Pro.

trooper_2117d ago

What clear roadmap?

They can't even get new, successful games out of the gate, lol.

FinalFantasyFanatic2117d ago (Edited 2117d ago )

@gangsta_red,

Considering the cultural trends over there, I would believe they don't put too much into having a presence with their users, but with their stellar performance this gen they don't really need to.

As for Microsoft debuting a new console, it's a case of "dammed if you do, dammed if you don't", people would be annoyed or upset either way.

Tross2118d ago

@Eonjay Yeah, sometimes I wish MS's PR department would STFU, especially since it hasn't actually done them as many favours as they think. Ending the current gen won't be an automatic turnaround for them either, as Sony is definitely planning for the future too. They need to figure out where they went wrong this gen so they don't make the same mistakes, or Sony will trounce them again. I mean, gamers already know where MS went wrong, and here's hoping their latest E3 conference is a sign that they're starting to get it, but I'm not counting on it.

rainslacker2118d ago

Biggest thing is is that Sony has enough to show off and market for the near future, that they don't need to lay out their long term plans to keep people excited for what may come. They can keep people.excited for what were getting soon, and they've set a good expectation that they'll keep delivering. If ms had a decent line up to really be excited for, they wouldn't be talking about 3-4 years from now, or how they may have this great potential if people just give them a chance.

DarkZane2118d ago (Edited 2118d ago )

"First the PS4 is so successful that Microsoft probably wants nothing more than for the PS4 gen to end"

I have no idea why they'd want that, they're just gonna get beaten as badly next-gen. You'd have to be a fool to be in a hurry to get beaten and humiliated again so quickly.

UCForce2119d ago

Like I said before, they only talk when it’s necessary.

2117d ago
Obscure_Observer2118d ago

@-Foxtrot

"Maybe they know actions are louder then words."

Or maybe they´re waiting to know more about Microsoft´s next gen plans so they can react accordingly? You can say that Phil Spencer is running his mouth again as you usually do on Xbox articles, which actualy maybe be true, don´t get me wrong.

But i like how Phil Spencer is comming foward telling Xbox fans what to expect from Xbox in the future because i think it shows confidence and send a clear message that Microsoft will follow their own path (whatever it might be) instead of copying what Sony might do or what Nintendo is doing (Hybrid Console concept).

2118d ago
Godmars2902118d ago

"Or maybe they´re waiting to know more about Microsoft´s next gen plans so they can react accordingly?"

Isn't MS the ones who "borrowed" tech from Sony for the 360? What have they done this gen that Sony needs to seriously be worried about?

At this point MS have really only made services rather than delivered games. Done damage control. So again, why should Sony state their plans when the competition only talks up what they've yet to do instead of the here and now?

rainslacker2118d ago

They didn't wait for ms to announce it's plans for this gen. In fact, they caught ms off guard, to which ms actually delayed it's reveal conference after Sony had theirs. The ps3 reveal was a bit of an oddity because ms was forced to release the 360 early, but nothing in the ps3 seemed reactionary to the 360. The ps2 reveal wasn't reactionary. The ps1 reveal was a bit, but if stories are to be believed, it played out how they hoped, with Segas price being the only thing they were concerned about.

So.im not sure at this point what Sony would do other than what they already have planned, assuming those plans are complete, just because ms may throw them for a loop. This is especially true because ms seems.pretty predictable to me, and as of late, they haven't exactly been quiet about their future plans.

Obscure_Observer2117d ago

@rainslacker

"This is especially true because ms seems.pretty predictable to me"

Yes.
Like Xbox One X "slighty" more powerful than PS4 Pro.
Like Xbox One X DOA
Like Game Pass as a free to play playground.
Like Game Pass not delivering AAA games like Forza Horizon 4 Day One.
Like Sea of Thieves DOA without Game Pass
Like SoD 2 DOA without Game Pass
Like Halo Infinite as a MP only game

You´re so EPIC. You´re so right. So on point. Your Crystal Ball is worth Trillions! /S

rainslacker2117d ago

MS has been telling people all gen what to expect for the future. Even before the console launched. While that's not really that out of the ordinary during a console launch, , MS has now moved things moved the future of the Xbox One, to the next gen.

Anyhow.

-Like Xbox One X "slighty" more powerful than PS4 Pro.

Slight or extremes are a matter of interpretation. However, based on everything I've seen so far, the actual perceptible differences between the PS4P and X1X are pretty slight. When the specs were known, I never said the power difference was slight, just that the perceptible difference wasn't going to be that much, nor that apparent to the average gamer. I was right.

-Like Xbox One X DOA

Is the X1X a raging success? What are the numbers? Its not dead, nor did I say it'd be DOA. All we know is that X1 in general isn't doing that well compared to PS4/PS4P. I said it'd be a niche console for a niche market within the general console market. I don't know if I was right or not, because again, MS doesn't release numbers.

-Like Game Pass as a free to play playground.

That's vastly spinning what I said in a generalization about MS own content offerings. SoT is pretty much a F2P game without the MT right now, but they don't really need it with a $10 month sub service, and a $60 price tag for the game outside that. Beyond that, hard to say what will become of the service. Its still in its early stages.

-Like Game Pass not delivering AAA games like Forza Horizon 4 Day One.

Never said it wouldn't. but FH4 will likely have MT, and I could easily see it structured more like a GaaS....although not exactly a F2P game. If it doesn't, then great, maybe Game Pass is doing enough to support a title like this. Long term though, still no way that Game Pass can support multiple $50-100 million dollar budget games per year, while still offering up the mid-tier titles, plus the other 95% of games that will continuously be offered on the service. The only way it can support that is if their subs are very high, and so far, we don't know those numbers. but GP is in it's early stages, so MS will lose money in the interim with the hope of making a lot more later.

-Like Sea of Thieves DOA without Game Pass

Again, we don't know the actual sales of the game outside game pass, so who's to say that GP didn't keep it from being DOA? In any case, I never said the game would be DOA, I said that it had potential, although not for me, and that MS would have to do pretty much what they're doing now to make sure people stay engaged.

rainslacker2117d ago

-Like SoD 2 DOA without Game Pass

Did anyone ever say this would be the case? I know I didn't. I knew the game had a cult following, and the last game did well enough.

-Like Halo Infinite as a MP only game

Its a proposition I made on nothing more than the trailer given MS penchant for moving towards GaaS, and the implication of the term infinite. Game may have a SP mode, but the way it was announced....."Play ALONG SIDE Master Chief", instead of "Play AS Master Chief", coupled with what Activision tried to do with COD:I which was supposed to be an endless MP experience for the long term, made me make a prediction. The current rumors suggest it'll be SP only, with the MP to follow later....but that's still a rumor. I may have been wrong, in which case, so what? It happens. You don't get a cookie when I'm wrong, nor when you point it out.

Now that I've cleared all that up, I will point out that when I said MS was predictable, I meant in the fact that they will make a lot of grand promises, talk about the future, then pretty much ignore the present and their current situation by posturing itself for long term good will they hope to gain by playing the good guy now.

That makes me think of how Ms talked for months prior E3 about it being different from anything they did before?
Result was a very typical E3 presentation.

IamTylerDurden12118d ago (Edited 2118d ago )

Sony needs to be a bit louder in certain cases though. MS is far better with their PR, even if it's bs most of the time it still makes them money. Sony is terrible at explaining things and selling themselves. Sony makes incredible products but they often bumble the messaging. MS generally makes inferior products but they do a marvelous job at selling them.

This gen could've easily been worse for Xbox. It could've been closer to Wii U status than people think. For 4 years MS was selling a weaker, more expensive console with no games yet they have managed decent numbers. The PS4 has more than doubled the XB1, but XB1 hasn't sold terribly. MS has done a miraculous job of keeping it afloat through pipe dreams, spin, and PR nonsense. MS knows how to sell, and it would be nice to see Sony take a little bit of that and inject it into their excellent product line.

The reason MS always talks about the future is because that's what they need to sell people on because they know the present is mediocre. They need to sell people on pipe dreams because they have nothing right now. It's just the truth. The entire gen has been like this.

PowerOfTheCloud2118d ago

MS Pr may work on their fans but everyone else with a little bit of common sense can see through their constant hyperboling, twisting and smearing.

So no sony should keep on going on with not constantly making themselves look like completely incompetent douches.

Rule no.1 of GPU OC: When you get a green screen, it's the equivalent of a blue screen during a CPU OC. i.e. an unstable OC.

Wither 3 is both, a CPU and a GPU intensive game. It was pushing your card to it's limits, i.e. load, and that's what we need. So, don't worry there.

Always push the core clock by +10 MHz and memory clock by +50 MHz (save the settings > exit afterburner) and check for stability i.e. run Witcher 3. See if you get a green screen again. If not, push another +10 MHz to the Core Clock and +50MHz memory clock and repeat the same.

Eventually you will get a green screen. This is where you need to increase the power limit slider +5. Now check the green screen again. If it does green screen again, push another +5 on the power limit until it doesn't green screen while you run a game on load. Play around a little more with the core clock + memory clock + power limit until you hit a sweet spot and save the settings, and of course, run Witcher 3 again to test green screen. Once everything is stable, save the settings to a profile and run it when you run a game (I recommend this), not while normal computing tasks.

If your Core Voltage is grey'ed out then it's a factory binned card, so leave it as it is and don't worry about it.

Note: Most stable GPU OC's are around the 10% mark, so beware of pushing anything beyond this (core clock, memory clock and power).

AspiringProGenji2116d ago

Thanks you very much! I'l try this

FGHFGHFGH2117d ago

you can unlock voltage control in settings, but if you're not sure what you are doing, don't mess with it. You can also set afterburner to start with windows, so you don't have to mess with it every time. I also recommend setting up custom auto fan control. You really don't need to overclock a 1080 though, are you trying to play at 4k?

AspiringProGenji2116d ago

You are right! I don't have to overclock it as it is a beast. i was just curious about how much further OC could push it

Microsoft's quest for short-term $$$ is doing long-term damage to Windows, Surface, Xbox, and beyond

Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's plans to increase every department's margins.

More upcoming Microsoft-owned games slated for PlayStation are already being developed. At least for now, they're potentially obvious games you'd most likely expect. And yes, while it's true Microsoft is a prolific publisher on PlayStation already, it has typically revolved around specific franchises like Minecraft. They wont kill it, but they will go fully PC while keeping xbox as a brand, and go multiplatform for the most part. They will also work tirelessly to diminish console gaming’s importance.

Skuletor8h ago

Starfield would be no surprise and there's the rumor that it will come to Playstation after the Shattered Space DLC, Forza (along with Halo and Gears of War) I find less likely but I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually end up on PlayStation too, especially if Xbox give up on hardware and go the Sega route.

Not to worried about forza. I'd rather see others like what inxile and obsidian are working on. Starfield sounds like it needs more time in the oven so let it cook first imo. Hypercharge Unboxed Dev Saddened By Claims It'll Be 'Dead' Without Xbox Game Pass

One of the big Xbox releases heading our way in May 2024 is the long-awaited Hypercharge Unboxed, which is finally bringing its "first and third-person shooter action figure game" to Xbox consoles on Friday, May 31st.

Sadly, ahead of launch, the game's official Twitter (or "X") account has been highlighting the "trolls" who are claiming that because it's not launching on Game Pass, Hypercharge Unboxed is already set up for failure on Xbox.

helicoptergirl19h ago

It's horrible what people will say, but the truth might be harsh. There is a good chance it might not do well on Xbox if it's not on GamePass. There is a strong possibility that is the case. We'll see.

When it launches on Playstation in the future you can rest assured it will sell much better. The devs have confirmed it's coming to Playstation in the future.

"It is built in the Unreal Engine 4. The game was released on the Nintendo eShop on January 31, 2020 and on Steam on April 27, 2020. The development of Hypercharge: Unboxed for the Xbox platform was officially announced on July 16, 2022, with the developers also confirming future support for the PlayStation."

ZeekQuattro17h ago

I remember having this on my radar years ago for the Switch but never pulled the trigger on it. Crazy it's still not on PlayStation yet.

northpaws9h ago

And that's the problem of GamePass.

JEECE8h ago

Unfortunately once people are conditioned to expect to get something as part of a subscription they already pay for, they are unlikely to buy it a la carte. Some games, including this one, now look like "Gamepass Games" to a huge chunk of the Xbox audience. Maybe this game will buck that trend, and I wish them luck, but I'd imagine they'll have a rough go trying to sell this game on Xbox.

shinoff21838h ago

Hopefully their game not selling on Xbox doesn't stop them from bringing it to ps. I can't imagine why a developer would go Xbox first if their not on gamepass. Good luck to them though.

JEECE8h ago

Yeah I can't figure that out either. I mean I understand why you go there first if you get a Gamepass payday, but if you are just trying to sell copies it doesn't make sense. Fewer users overall, and a smaller percentage of those users are willing to buy indie games a la carte.

Jingsing6h ago

Yeah, I can't understand it either unless there is some deep routed fan-boyism from the developer, which isn't very clever if you are trying to make a living. Fatshark is a perfect example of a developer sending their games to die on Xbox and they kept doing it.

British guy saying Xbox is his dream console doesn't really sit right does it. 5 generations of PlayStation in the UK and you haven't figured out what console is going to make you the most money. That is the mistake you've made.
