Anti illegal game sharing update

There fixed it for ya...

UltraNova2490d ago

Next up: Sony's arrogance strikes again, they now block game-sharing mods on ps4!

Soon at a blog near you: Sony is not allowing strangers to break in their homes stealing their stuff and eating their cereal.

Dear Lord...

AwsmTxn2490d ago

I should have been more specific in my comment.

starchild2489d ago

Agreed. This is totally justified.

Yes, if only there was some kind of GAME SHARING utility since October 2014 where you could somehow SHARE a game with another gamer. But, I guess that kind of awe inspiring magic only exists in the wildest realms of our imagination.

Or its a basic PSN function this past 3 years.

Sam Fisher2490d ago

Ive been sharing my games since ps3 launch

agent45322490d ago

I am confused the PS3 allowed game sharing from all Sony accounts. The PS4 lacks that feature sad.

Sam Fisher2490d ago

Yes and now, the way to do it is you have to let the other person make their console your primary then vice versa, after that you just use your account to play, and that allows his games playable on your console and vice versa, including dlc and ps+ (which i pay 50/50 with my bestie). Just note that if you are going to buy the game and want the whole package (like gold edition type things or full bundles) buy it separately, the unlock keys has a bug the other person cant play the dlc

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2490d ago

Most of these types of updates are designed to render third-party mods/hacks that violate Sony's TOS/TOU useless. Judging by your comment, either you just don't care and will still use third party mods/hacks or you didn't know. Either way, using Mods/Hacks is actually a waste of time. Eventually, they will be rendered useless by an update.

rainslacker2490d ago

You can still share your games. You just can't copy them and give them to a friend to play.

Is game sharing the new term for piracy? Funny how pirates will always try to twist up the terms to make themselves not look like they're doing something illegal.

Maddens Raiders2490d ago

These kids and their stealing is borrowing mentality. Get off my lawn!

Seriously this is jacked tho...hmm let's see..
steal from the game companies so they bleed to death slowly and go out of business.
And then...
we won't be able to buy games from them anymore. Yeah that rocks! derp

The cat and mouse game between Sony and the hackers continues on.

RosweeSon2490d ago

Been going on for years at least for Sony they can just patch in updates these days back in days when ps1 piracy was rife they had to keep rereleasing the console minus various ports 🙄😂✌🏻

jerethdagryphon2490d ago

Picacy will stop if the entire mainboard sans psu componants is inside of a single chip cpu gpu north southbridge and everything else inc disc interface chips then there will be no point of attack

rainslacker2490d ago

It's fun to watch at times. Particularly how the pirates come out of the wordwork and try to justify their actions. And when someone says they're doing illegal things, they seem to get a ton of downvotes, which is odd, because I always assumed there were more honest gamers than pirates.

When it's not fun though is when companies go to extremes to try and prevent it. The PS Vita was so locked down that it was one of the biggest negatives of the system in terms of ease of use. It didn't stop the pirates, and the subsequent updates only delayed the inevitable. But the honest consumer is sitting there trying to deal with content manager, over priced encrypted memory cards, accounts locked to a single system with a rather annoying ordeal to switch between them, etc.

While I don't blame Sony for trying to protect their interests, there are times when it's prudent to think of your actual customers and just accept that piracy will happen. OTOH, pirates make it really annoying for the honest consumer sometimes.

TerminalGamer2490d ago

Just curious but how much do people spend on mod chips and can they be updated?

chris2352490d ago

with the past nintendo machines it was like that. a few hours after nintendo hurled out their latest anti piracy update there always was an update to the now disalbeled mod chips. piece of cake. i would get a switch an mod it but there are just no games on that platform i even would want to play for free.

MrFisher212490d ago

My issue with the Switch also. Once it gets some games then I will grab one and mod it.

Mr_Writer852490d ago

And this boys and girls is why we can't have nice things.

Vile scumbags who leech off society.

rainslacker2490d ago (Edited 2490d ago )

When I installed them for people in the PS2 days, I'd charge $100 for the install, and if I provided the chip it would be another $50-80 depending on which chip they installed. PS1 chips were cheaper. OGXbox was $100, but the chips were cheaper. Took me about 30 minutes to install and test. If I invested in some better soldering equipment I probably could have done it in 20, but I took care to keep things nice and neat.

Before those days, it was usually just a switch install with a couple wires because carts just changed the pin out for local territories. I would do those for about $50. It took atbout 10 minutes, sans any packing/shipping that I may have to do.

From what I understand, if one has to have someone do it today, the price can range from $100-250 depending on system, chip, and who supplies the chip. The more expensive ones tend to have some sort of warranty should things get messed up, but that doesn't cover obsolescence due to updates....which wasn't much of an issue in the PS1/2 days.

Most chips can be updated. This has been true since the PS2 days, although the updates may not keep up with the system updates themselves, and overall, a lot of times, some of the chips never get updates, and at times, the console updates may not make it possible due to it being more than just a matter of a CMOS update.

I dont do installs anymore. I had a change of heart on the piracy issue a while back. While I did have a ton of pirated games, I did it more for imports, which I was more into at the time. I made decent, if inconsistent, money on it, which was my only real incentive for doing it for others. While I had a customer agreement saying that it was only for legally purchased software, it really wouldn't have protected me had I been sued by one of the console makers. But in the end, since I knew people just signed it, and I'd say 99% of them did use it for illegal purposes, my conscience got the better of me, and I just stopped, and went on to be more anti-piracy and be more active in speaking against it. maybe attoning for my past indiscretions, because I was quite active in the pirate scene back then, at least on a distribution level as I had several outlets where I shared(and received) tons of games.

As of right now, all my retro systems have a mod where it's needed for imports, but the only copied games I play are those where I have a legal copy, but those copies tend to be rather costly due to various factors, so I prefer to keep them in good condition. Maybe amounts to 1 game a year like that.

TerminalGamer2490d ago

Did they have to be soldered into place?

rainslacker2490d ago

The ones i installed did. Some had these little circuit boards you could mount the chip in and just press it onto the main board and it would work. But those circuit boards tended to be only for specific models, and were not very reliable and often had to be reseatted. In some cases, they could actually damage the system if you weren't careful.

Since I was installing them, I always soldered. I'm not sure if all the new ones require it. There were some USB ones floating around during the PS3 days. Not sure how well those things worked. There were a few odd balls in there that didn't require soldering, but they were limited.

I don't know about the more modern ones. I'm not really in the scene anymore. I still know some people that are though, which is why I still know some things, but actual mod products I'm not sure.

With newer systems, if they need to be soldered, one would probably want to have someone who knows how do it. The places to solder on the board are much smaller, and they use lead free traces and connectors on modern computers, which requires a bit more soldering knowledge and in some cases, special solder.

mark3214uk2490d ago

never knew there was a modchip for the ps4?

chris2352490d ago

the ps4 images on the usenet have been floating around for quite a while now. as in years.
but personally, i would not risk getting banned and thus losing my trophy count ;-)

XbladeTeddy2490d ago

trophies aren't nothing but a load of virtual useless bollocks

RommyReigns2490d ago

Xbladeteddy

Trophies are and have always been better than Achievements, at least others can see what games have been played a lot (the percentage and the elusive Platinum trophy), much better than having a baseless score on the profile.

frostypants2490d ago

People still use usenet? Mind blown.

rainslacker2490d ago

@frosty

Usenet is still much easier and productive than torrents nowadays. It's typically a lot faster than torrents as well due to it being served by actual servers as opposed to relying on other users of various counts and speeds.

If you have the right usenet provider, you can get stuff that has been around for 10+ years.

It isn't perfect, but depending on what you're looking for, it can actually net much better results. Unfortunately, you do have to pay for server access, so it is surprising that usenet still exists for such things.

KillBill2489d ago

@RommyReigns - my guess is you simply are not familiar with Achievements then? As each has a percentage complete. A rarity shown for each achievement. And you can easily track your achievements versus your friends or overall leaderboards.

10 Biggest Xbox Mistakes of All Time (So Far)

The Xbox brand has done a lot of good over the years, but their various blunders are pretty wild to look back on in their magnitude.

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies3d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX3d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody3d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

Cacabunga3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_3d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga3d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie1d 23h ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly3d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga3d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit3d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic2d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_3d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff21833d ago (Edited 3d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies3d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.
