Hideo Kojima says games and films will merge together

Legendary game designer Hideo Kojima says games, novels and films will "merge into one type of entertainment".

chrisx2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

Hideo your the boss but I disagree with that. Movies, especially hollywood movies are overrated. A movie will never give you the emotions a good game gives. Merging both would be a mistake, Quantum break tried to do it but we all saw how it panned out

BlakHavoc2694d ago

Movies are overrated? lol something enjoyed by millions across the world, even more so than video games is overrated cause you don't particularly enjoy them?...I love games as much as anyone but that statement is asinine.

freshslicepizza2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

No, David Cage has already shown how gameplay comes at the cost of trying to merge the two mediums. It's OK when I spend $12 on a movie but not $60 and have so many scripted events out of my control. Hideos new game looks to also be about graphics over gameplay but it's still too early to tell. I would imagine Sony wants something out rather quickly so who knows.

Muzikguy2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

You'd imagine wrong. Why would Sony pull a Konami on Kojima? We'd be getting nowhere

freshslicepizza2694d ago

I don't like those types of games, I'm not suggesting Sony should not support his ideas.

Goldby2694d ago

Moldy, how can u possibly come to that conclusion when we havent seen any gameplay yet. We have seen a scene in the decima ebgine but no gameplay.

I guess its fair to say that halo 5 went graphics over gameplay because of all the cg trailers as well smdh...

Bring up that point after we have seen gameplay. Otherwise stop trying to troll. It isnt working

MyDietEqualsGames2694d ago

Out quickly? Yeah. Even if Sony is bankrolling, you know who's directing the game. That shit will be out when it's ready and I don't expect this to take as long as the last two games he made. Got an engine, got characters, I gather they're full on production as of my typing, unless it's already been confirmed and I forgot or didn't hear about it.

This is soaring to the top of my most wanted and I know next to nothing about it aside from the themes, which have me this excited in the first place.

Irishguy952694d ago

BS chris. Movies are great, TV Shows are great.

Call of duty - Holly wood.

Fist4achin2694d ago

I do think that movies lately have been rather flat. Hollywood seems to be pumping out a lot more garbage than quality it seems. I think series and TV shows have surpassed movies lately as far as quality goes.

Games on the other hand have had some excellent storytelling. Some have been much better than bigger budgeted movies that have been released.

Gunstar752694d ago

I totally disagree with film cannot evoke emotions like video games can ... merging the two? It's inevitable but not necessarily a good move

Muzikguy2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

I don't want to see the 2 mediums merge.

AngelicIceDiamond2694d ago

The live action was hit or miss but the acting, lip syncing and over performance was well done. I guess you didn't like The Order if that's the case.

PhoenixUp2694d ago

No. Movies are a passive medium. Games are an assertive medium. There will always be a divide between the two

UCForce2694d ago

Well, he did with MGS series. Also, I think MGS 4 has the longest cutscenes than other MGS series. MGS 5 has the least cutscenes.

PhoenixUp2694d ago

He made the Metal Gear series very cinematic, but his quote here sounds more like a broad statement that the two mediums would merge which is unbelievable.

You don't even see a lot of consistently great movies based on video games being released

UCForce2694d ago

I read it on his twitter over the years. He do love movies and games.

UCForce2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

A lot of people said David Cage games was a movie, but people love his work especially the story, drama and choice.

DevilOgreFish2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

I agree and disagree with Kojima's assertion. many games today are being marketed on the adrenalin movie hype reception of their trailers. A "game" however doesn't necessarily have to make a guy like Michael Bay proud in order to be a top seller or be a legend in it's own right. there are lots of games that do fantastic doing what they do best, fact.

Lynx02072694d ago

Nothing new. They are merging for many years. Today's video games already are a product of merging movies with "normal" games, physical RPG, old style games (Pong etc) and novels. Just as present movies are a product of merging first "moving photos" with novels. But it makes me wonder, what he is planning to do with Death Stranding.

BlakHavoc2694d ago (Edited 2694d ago )

I agree, I don't think he's saying games will start to become more and more like movies while the gameplay elements will start to deteriorate. But instead that games are advancing at a pace that will allow them to have the same emotional resonance that movies do, while always maintaining a better level of interaction than movies. Basically one day games will have the same production and presentation value as movies, while also remaining something that requires your interaction.

Konami didn't recover after ditching Kojima, but this Metal Gear revival is its best shot

With Kojima gone, a lot is riding on Konami's revival of Metal Gear.

Not really, Konami is basically in name only and like so many other Japanese studios that have come and gone they are just going to be an IP troll and milk that cow until it is dry. Also one of the advertised features is playing the game from a different camera view while everything else remains the same will just result in making the game easier like what happened with Twin Snakes.

Cacabunga1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

If this turns out good and gamers support it we will get the other ones.. i really hope we get MGS original in zanzibar, Peace Walker and Portable Ops remakes after this one.. they are related with naked snake

Portable Ops was sooooooo good and underrated

gold_drake1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

Konami might not be super active in the videogame business anymore, or less, but they still make a ton of money with their collections and pachinko machines.

and their castlevania series on netflix is really successful also.

just_looken1d 1h ago

@jinsing

Your dislikes shows this sites situation

Konami has been doing all of that for years now like there contra games or mgs ports

mgs survive anyone

isarai1d 10h ago

When are people going to learn that all Konami is doing with these games Is licensing them out? They are not trying to revive their game development Branch and they are not the ones developing this. It is studios that came to them and asked to use the license to make a game and they have been doing this pretty much since MGSV

jeromeface1d 7h ago

Remaking all his work reaks of desperation. The only reason they are getting away with it is everyones deep love for the series. If delta is successful (which as of right now it should be), they'll be sure to remake all of them.

Redgrave1d 6h ago

Big shoes to fill, and compared to SH2 - this is as much a 1:1 remake as you can get. You can still see the PS2 bones in the movements and how the cutscenes have the same angles. If anything, I'd have preferred the reverse.... with SH2 being closer to a 1:1 remake but prettier, and have MGS3 have a little more freedom.

Ideally, MGS3 with a MGSV skin in terms of gameplay and freedom of approach. This is more like a high budget remaster than a remake. Having recently replayed the Bluepoint remaster, this is going to be like that same experience but even prettier.

But, as with both MGS3 and SH2, nearly impossible shoes to fill if not outright so. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Such is the legacy of these GOAT titles.

Inverno1d 4h ago

It's a one to one remake, using the same voice recordings too. Not a reimagining, no new content thus far announced, just a straight remake of a game that already exists, but now with prettier graphics. There's no revival, they proved they can't make anything related to MG after Survival. They'll just remake all the games and people will eat it up.
